Last week, 00:00:22.179 --> 00:00:24.839 we discovered something that probably many people 00:00:24.839 --> 00:00:28.059 never consider or never study, and it's that 00:00:28.059 --> 00:00:32.210 the word hell in English actually comes from 00:00:32.210 --> 00:00:36.109 four different words in the Hebrew and the Greek. 00:00:36.890 --> 00:00:41.390 Those four words were Sheol, Hades, Gehenna and 00:00:41.390 --> 00:00:44.929 Tartarus. So in this episode, we're going to 00:00:44.929 --> 00:00:49.409 zoom in on the word Jesus used most often and 00:00:49.409 --> 00:00:52.649 that word is Gehenna. So I want you to consider 00:00:52.649 --> 00:00:55.189 this question as we begin this conversation. 00:00:55.710 --> 00:00:59.929 is what if Jesus was not talking about a place 00:00:59.929 --> 00:01:04.189 in the afterlife but a place his listeners could 00:01:04.189 --> 00:01:07.849 physically see and they knew what he was talking 00:01:07.849 --> 00:01:12.310 about when he was referencing this place called 00:01:12.310 --> 00:01:16.450 Gehenna. The word Gehenna actually comes from 00:01:16.450 --> 00:01:20.430 Hebrew and it's And again, if you're a Hebrew 00:01:20.430 --> 00:01:24.650 scholar, bear with me. But it's Gehenom, which 00:01:24.650 --> 00:01:28.230 actually means the Valley of Hinnom. This was 00:01:28.230 --> 00:01:32.010 a real place, guys. This was located south of 00:01:32.010 --> 00:01:35.409 Jerusalem. It would have been known to everyone 00:01:35.409 --> 00:01:39.310 in Jesus' day. It was a place in the Old Testament 00:01:39.310 --> 00:01:43.390 era as the place where human sacrifice was offered 00:01:43.390 --> 00:01:48.140 to the pagan god, Molech. Okay. So again, just 00:01:48.140 --> 00:01:50.780 as with the rethinking in time series that we 00:01:50.780 --> 00:01:53.760 ended season three with, it's important for us 00:01:53.760 --> 00:01:57.420 to understand what these words would have meant 00:01:57.420 --> 00:02:01.019 to the audience that was hearing it. Um, so we 00:02:01.019 --> 00:02:02.980 have to go back and we have to look at these 00:02:02.980 --> 00:02:06.299 things and put ourselves. in the listener's perspective 00:02:06.299 --> 00:02:09.939 to really grab hold of what was Jesus trying 00:02:09.939 --> 00:02:15.620 to communicate and not fast forward to 2026 and 00:02:15.620 --> 00:02:19.539 use our modern day language to try to define 00:02:19.539 --> 00:02:21.240 what these words meant. And I hope that makes 00:02:21.240 --> 00:02:26.319 sense. So if we look at we're just going to kick 00:02:26.319 --> 00:02:31.520 off here with Second Kings, Chapter 23, verse 00:02:31.520 --> 00:02:35.870 10. And it says this, then the king defiled the 00:02:35.870 --> 00:02:39.210 altar of Tofeth in the Valley of Ben -Hinom. 00:02:39.509 --> 00:02:43.270 So no one could ever use it again. Excuse me. 00:02:43.310 --> 00:02:46.150 So no one could ever again use it to sacrifice 00:02:46.150 --> 00:02:50.030 a son or daughter in the fire as an offering 00:02:50.030 --> 00:02:53.870 to Molech. And then we have we jump over to Jeremiah, 00:02:53.870 --> 00:02:56.509 Chapter seven, verse thirty one. And it says 00:02:56.509 --> 00:02:59.879 they have built pagan shrines at Tofeth. the 00:02:59.879 --> 00:03:03.039 garbage dump in the valley of Ben Hanom. And 00:03:03.039 --> 00:03:05.840 there they burned their sons and daughters in 00:03:05.840 --> 00:03:09.180 the fire. Now catch this. I have never commanded 00:03:09.180 --> 00:03:13.639 such a horrible deed. It never even crossed my 00:03:13.639 --> 00:03:18.400 mind to command such a thing. So this valley, 00:03:18.639 --> 00:03:22.819 again a very real valley, became infamous because 00:03:22.819 --> 00:03:30.069 of child sacrifice. Children would have been 00:03:30.069 --> 00:03:33.669 burned as offerings at this place called Gehenna 00:03:33.669 --> 00:03:37.729 to false gods. So when people heard the word 00:03:37.729 --> 00:03:41.509 Gehenna, they were not imagining some distant 00:03:41.509 --> 00:03:46.310 afterlife. They pictured that valley that Jesus 00:03:46.310 --> 00:03:49.770 was speaking of. It was a real place and it did 00:03:49.770 --> 00:03:55.310 serve as a very real warning. So let's look at 00:03:55.639 --> 00:03:59.379 go some more in Jeremiah will jump over to Jeremiah 00:03:59.379 --> 00:04:04.120 chapter 19 verse 6 and it says this because they 00:04:04.120 --> 00:04:07.280 have done all of this behold the time is coming 00:04:07.280 --> 00:04:10.280 when this place will no longer be called to fifth 00:04:10.280 --> 00:04:13.360 or the hit on Valley but people will call it 00:04:13.360 --> 00:04:19.000 slaughter Valley declares Yahweh God is warning 00:04:19.000 --> 00:04:22.339 Israel that this valley would become a place 00:04:22.339 --> 00:04:27.199 of judgment and a place of devastation. Gehenna 00:04:27.199 --> 00:04:32.300 became a symbol, if you will, of national destruction. 00:04:33.100 --> 00:04:36.040 It was not a symbol of some sort of eternal torture. 00:04:36.459 --> 00:04:39.399 It was not a symbol of eternal conscience torment. 00:04:39.939 --> 00:04:44.339 It was a national collapse and it was, in fact, 00:04:44.899 --> 00:04:48.860 judgment imagery. We're going to dive into judgment 00:04:48.860 --> 00:04:52.879 in a few weeks, so just bear with us as we continue 00:04:52.879 --> 00:04:55.980 running through this. Let us remember though 00:04:55.980 --> 00:05:00.839 that prophets often used physical places as symbolic 00:05:00.839 --> 00:05:03.759 warnings. We have examples of this. You can look 00:05:03.759 --> 00:05:06.639 at Babylon. You can look at Edom. You can look 00:05:06.639 --> 00:05:10.060 at Jerusalem. Jesus, when He is speaking to the 00:05:10.060 --> 00:05:15.060 crowds, is doing the same exact thing. So Jesus 00:05:15.060 --> 00:05:17.939 uses the word Gehenna. So we're going to look 00:05:17.939 --> 00:05:23.019 at Matthew chapter 5 verse 29 and it says this 00:05:23.019 --> 00:05:26.579 if your right eye seduces you to fall into sin 00:05:26.579 --> 00:05:29.740 then go blind in your right eye for you're better 00:05:29.740 --> 00:05:32.319 off losing sight in one eye than to have your 00:05:32.319 --> 00:05:35.870 whole body thrown into hell And if your right 00:05:35.870 --> 00:05:39.209 eye entices you to sin, let it go limp and useless, 00:05:39.370 --> 00:05:41.769 for you're better off losing a part of your body 00:05:41.769 --> 00:05:46.149 than to have it all thrown into hell. Now, when 00:05:46.149 --> 00:05:49.370 I did this with our Bible study group on Wednesday 00:05:49.370 --> 00:05:54.029 night, I made sure to bring this thought up. 00:05:55.310 --> 00:05:59.509 If we are to take the Bible literally, then why 00:05:59.509 --> 00:06:02.250 are there not a bunch of people running around 00:06:02.250 --> 00:06:07.569 with one eye One hand quite frankly no eyes and 00:06:07.569 --> 00:06:14.689 no hands There's a note that I have here from 00:06:14.689 --> 00:06:17.870 out of the passion translation And it says this 00:06:17.870 --> 00:06:21.170 these verses use obvious hyperbole to help us 00:06:21.170 --> 00:06:23.910 understand how intent we must be to guard or 00:06:23.910 --> 00:06:27.720 our lives from sin Jesus is using an obvious 00:06:27.720 --> 00:06:30.120 figure of speech when he instructs us to pluck 00:06:30.120 --> 00:06:33.800 out our eyes or to cut off our hands The metaphor 00:06:33.800 --> 00:06:37.800 is clear. We are to end every habit that will 00:06:37.800 --> 00:06:42.699 lead us to destruction now Let me pause right 00:06:42.699 --> 00:06:45.480 here and just say from my audience. I do know 00:06:45.480 --> 00:06:47.740 there's a lot of controversy surrounding the 00:06:47.740 --> 00:06:52.540 passion translation And I do take that when I'm 00:06:52.540 --> 00:06:57.829 doing the study for this I don't just take footnotes 00:06:57.829 --> 00:07:00.290 to take footnotes. I do take footnotes that I 00:07:00.290 --> 00:07:05.730 believe will be challenging and to bring further 00:07:05.730 --> 00:07:09.769 conversation to this. So again, I know there's 00:07:09.769 --> 00:07:13.970 controversy. I don't take that lightly. I do 00:07:13.970 --> 00:07:17.970 take that as I'm reading his translation and 00:07:17.970 --> 00:07:20.750 his footnotes. I do take that into consideration. 00:07:21.160 --> 00:07:23.800 while I'm putting my notes together. So just 00:07:23.800 --> 00:07:26.259 just know that. And I'm going to move on from 00:07:26.259 --> 00:07:28.959 that because that's not what this is about. I don't just read any translation 00:07:35.600 --> 00:07:38.240 and take what that translator put. I try to go 00:07:38.240 --> 00:07:41.019 dig in myself and allow Holy Spirit to teach 00:07:41.019 --> 00:07:44.279 me just as I challenge anyone to do. So again, Jesus is using is 00:07:49.579 --> 00:07:52.959 using hyperbole in this moment to teach something 00:07:52.959 --> 00:07:56.860 which would have been a very common Jewish rhetorical 00:07:56.860 --> 00:08:01.920 style here. And context matters. If this verse 00:08:01.920 --> 00:08:05.680 for example, if I was to take this verse and 00:08:05.680 --> 00:08:08.079 try to teach a room of people that this is what 00:08:08.079 --> 00:08:10.899 they should do, what would be your thoughts? 00:08:11.519 --> 00:08:13.579 What would go through your head if I'm teaching 00:08:13.579 --> 00:08:18.139 just this verse and trying to teach a room full 00:08:18.139 --> 00:08:20.899 of let's say teenagers that this is what you're 00:08:20.899 --> 00:08:24.800 supposed to do. No. But remember Matthew 5 is 00:08:24.800 --> 00:08:27.639 giving what we call the Sermon on the Mount. 00:08:27.839 --> 00:08:31.160 is what Jesus is giving and he goes through this 00:08:31.160 --> 00:08:33.659 this process of you have heard but I say many 00:08:33.659 --> 00:08:37.299 times over and his aim is not to make the law 00:08:37.299 --> 00:08:40.320 any stricter for the sake of making it impossible 00:08:40.320 --> 00:08:44.360 no Jesus is actually exposing that righteousness 00:08:44.360 --> 00:08:49.100 was never about external behavior it was always 00:08:49.100 --> 00:08:51.580 it's always been about the heart and there's 00:08:51.580 --> 00:08:56.080 only one person who can heal repair and fix the 00:08:56.080 --> 00:08:59.169 heart Again, notice some of the progression. 00:08:59.350 --> 00:09:01.669 We have murder that begins with lust. Adultery 00:09:01.669 --> 00:09:04.710 begins with, excuse me, murder begins with anger. 00:09:05.250 --> 00:09:08.409 Adultery begins with lust. Oaths expose truthfulness. 00:09:08.549 --> 00:09:12.809 Loving enemies exposes the heart of love. Jesus 00:09:12.809 --> 00:09:15.809 is continually moving the conversation from outward 00:09:15.809 --> 00:09:19.690 actions to an inward reality. Again, and I say 00:09:19.690 --> 00:09:22.490 this a lot, but behavior follows identity. It's 00:09:22.490 --> 00:09:26.049 very important what you believe about yourself. 00:09:26.440 --> 00:09:29.080 So notice what he says, if your right eye causes 00:09:29.080 --> 00:09:31.779 you to stumble, if your right eye causes you 00:09:31.779 --> 00:09:35.059 to stumble, remember, I do not believe Jesus 00:09:35.059 --> 00:09:39.220 ever wastes words and I don't believe Matthew 00:09:39.220 --> 00:09:42.519 just randomly decided to record random words. 00:09:42.720 --> 00:09:45.600 So I pumped the brakes here just a little bit 00:09:45.600 --> 00:09:48.919 and so I began to ask, what does the eye represent? 00:09:49.080 --> 00:09:51.600 What does the hand represent? Why is it the right 00:09:51.600 --> 00:09:53.639 eye and hand that's being mentioned in this verse? 00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:58.539 The eye represents what we allow to shape our 00:09:58.539 --> 00:10:03.440 desires. I did a teaching several years ago on 00:10:03.440 --> 00:10:07.220 what you magnify will be magnified in your life. 00:10:07.840 --> 00:10:10.200 And essentially what I did, and you can try this, 00:10:10.740 --> 00:10:12.879 I just did it with my phone camera, put it in 00:10:12.879 --> 00:10:15.960 selfie mode, and I think I used a paper clip 00:10:15.960 --> 00:10:18.820 and a pen. Now if I was to ask you over this 00:10:18.820 --> 00:10:21.919 podcast which is... bigger the paper clip or 00:10:21.919 --> 00:10:24.559 the pen, I would hope you would say the pen. 00:10:25.419 --> 00:10:28.419 But if you take that paper clip and you adjust 00:10:28.419 --> 00:10:31.299 the perspective of the person looking, you can 00:10:31.299 --> 00:10:34.580 actually make that paper clip seem bigger than 00:10:34.580 --> 00:10:37.980 the pen. So my point was this, whatever you choose 00:10:37.980 --> 00:10:41.220 to magnify will become magnified in your own 00:10:41.220 --> 00:10:43.940 life, whether you're magnifying your issues or 00:10:43.940 --> 00:10:46.259 magnifying Christ, whether you're magnifying 00:10:46.259 --> 00:10:48.980 your situation or magnifying the promises of 00:10:48.980 --> 00:10:53.149 God. Which are you doing? And then we have the 00:10:53.149 --> 00:10:56.490 hand. The hand represents what we do. It represents 00:10:56.490 --> 00:11:00.009 our actions. So and then I begin to ask again, 00:11:00.110 --> 00:11:02.610 why the right eye, why the right hand? So in 00:11:02.610 --> 00:11:04.289 Jewish culture, what I found through studying 00:11:04.289 --> 00:11:08.610 is that the right side symbolized strength. It 00:11:08.610 --> 00:11:12.279 symbolized honor. power and what was most valuable. 00:11:12.879 --> 00:11:15.860 Jesus is saying that even if it's something precious, 00:11:16.299 --> 00:11:20.059 even if it costs you, remove whatever continually 00:11:20.059 --> 00:11:23.340 enslaves you. And I like one of the Bill Johnson 00:11:23.340 --> 00:11:25.320 quotes that I've heard over the years is that 00:11:25.320 --> 00:11:29.259 it's, is there a price to be paid, a cost that 00:11:29.259 --> 00:11:31.980 comes with this life? I would say certainly, 00:11:31.980 --> 00:11:34.159 but it's a little embarrassing to talk about 00:11:34.159 --> 00:11:38.860 the cost in comparison of what we gain in return. 00:11:39.210 --> 00:11:44.450 So just think about that. The Greek phrase here, 00:11:44.710 --> 00:11:47.210 for it causes you to stumble, literally means 00:11:47.210 --> 00:11:50.629 to trip up, to call someone to fall, to become 00:11:50.629 --> 00:11:54.549 a snare. So Jesus is talking about whatever continually 00:11:54.549 --> 00:11:57.750 becomes a trap that keeps you from walking in 00:11:57.750 --> 00:12:03.129 the life of the kingdom. When he says Gouge it 00:12:03.129 --> 00:12:06.409 out or pluck it out. It's again. It's more Jewish 00:12:06.409 --> 00:12:09.710 hyperbole He's not really telling people to go 00:12:09.710 --> 00:12:12.250 pluck out their eyeballs or cut off their hands 00:12:12.250 --> 00:12:15.269 That's not at all what he's doing in this moment 00:12:15.269 --> 00:12:18.450 No one listening to him would have thought that 00:12:18.450 --> 00:12:21.289 he's literally commanding eye or hand removal 00:12:21.289 --> 00:12:24.409 They would have heard deal with sin radically 00:12:24.409 --> 00:12:28.129 and and here's a hint. You cannot deal with sin 00:12:28.129 --> 00:12:32.379 radically Do not negotiate with what destroys 00:12:32.379 --> 00:12:37.700 you and again hint you cannot Okay, think about 00:12:37.700 --> 00:12:40.320 what I'm saying, you know, I'll I'll help with 00:12:40.320 --> 00:12:44.879 that in a little bit. So This is the turn then 00:12:44.879 --> 00:12:48.279 it says throwing it into Gehenna and this is 00:12:48.279 --> 00:12:50.100 where the misunderstanding We're going to focus 00:12:50.100 --> 00:12:53.059 on comes from because it was not the place that 00:12:53.059 --> 00:12:56.259 people would go to die It was a place loaded 00:12:56.259 --> 00:12:59.659 with prophetic imagery of judgment destruction 00:12:59.659 --> 00:13:02.899 and the consequences of covenant unfaithfulness. 00:13:04.080 --> 00:13:06.039 So if you look at throughout the Sermon on the 00:13:06.039 --> 00:13:08.700 Mount, Jesus is warning his Jewish audience about 00:13:08.700 --> 00:13:12.500 the catastrophic consequences awaiting Jerusalem 00:13:12.500 --> 00:13:16.879 if Israel continues rejecting God's way. And 00:13:16.879 --> 00:13:19.679 within a generation, Jerusalem would indeed be 00:13:19.679 --> 00:13:23.720 destroyed in AD 70. We talked about this. during 00:13:23.720 --> 00:13:26.879 the Rethinking End Time series. His point is 00:13:26.879 --> 00:13:31.620 unchecked sin does not remain private. It eventually 00:13:31.620 --> 00:13:37.200 brings destruction. So think about this. If sin 00:13:37.200 --> 00:13:40.100 is a distorted identity, which I could very much 00:13:40.100 --> 00:13:43.740 argue that that's what it is, at least one definition 00:13:43.740 --> 00:13:48.129 of it, If sin is fundamentally living contrary 00:13:48.129 --> 00:13:51.649 to who we truly are in Christ, then Jesus is 00:13:51.649 --> 00:13:53.990 telling a group of people, remove anything that 00:13:53.990 --> 00:13:58.590 keeps you believing that lie. Get it out. Cut 00:13:58.590 --> 00:14:02.230 it away. And this is not because God rejects 00:14:02.230 --> 00:14:04.789 you or He stops loving you, but it's because 00:14:04.789 --> 00:14:08.629 those things keep you from experiencing the life 00:14:08.629 --> 00:14:12.299 that is already yours. The cutting off is about 00:14:12.299 --> 00:14:15.940 decisively rejecting false identities, rejecting 00:14:15.940 --> 00:14:18.940 destructive patterns, and anything that would 00:14:18.940 --> 00:14:22.720 obscure your communion with Papa, your communion 00:14:22.720 --> 00:14:27.600 with the Trinity. Think about like a tumor. If 00:14:27.600 --> 00:14:30.840 a doctor goes in to cut out or remove a tumor, 00:14:31.460 --> 00:14:35.940 he's not trying to harm the patient. He's trying 00:14:35.940 --> 00:14:39.299 to help the patient actually have life again 00:14:39.299 --> 00:14:43.340 by removing the thing that's killing this individual. 00:14:45.580 --> 00:14:48.539 So then we have the Greek language. It does not 00:14:48.539 --> 00:14:51.360 use the word sin. It uses the Greek word scandalizo, 00:14:51.539 --> 00:14:54.700 which depending on context can mean to call someone 00:14:54.700 --> 00:14:58.360 to stumble spiritually, to trip someone up, to 00:14:58.360 --> 00:15:01.340 lead into sin, to call someone to lose faith, 00:15:01.879 --> 00:15:04.980 to shock or offend in a way that creates rejection 00:15:04.980 --> 00:15:09.600 or to become disillusioned. So in this context, 00:15:09.700 --> 00:15:12.179 I believe Jesus is saying if something becomes 00:15:12.179 --> 00:15:15.399 a trap that leads you away from the life that 00:15:15.399 --> 00:15:18.340 you have been given, deal with it radically, 00:15:18.559 --> 00:15:21.940 or as I would like to take it and say this, come 00:15:21.940 --> 00:15:25.279 into the revelation that Christ dealt with it 00:15:25.279 --> 00:15:28.759 radically when he crucified sin on the cross. 00:15:29.820 --> 00:15:32.639 I do not take sin lightly. I actually believe 00:15:32.639 --> 00:15:38.080 that Jesus effectively dealt with sin the worst 00:15:38.080 --> 00:15:42.299 way possible by crucifying it. He killed and 00:15:42.299 --> 00:15:45.440 destroyed the power of sin the power of guilt 00:15:45.440 --> 00:15:49.639 and the power of shame on behalf of you and I 00:15:49.639 --> 00:15:57.220 Man this stuff is good To me the heart of this 00:15:57.220 --> 00:16:01.620 teaching is don't treat sin casually whatever 00:16:01.620 --> 00:16:05.139 continually blinds you to the goodness of God 00:16:05.139 --> 00:16:10.600 or entangles you into destructive patterns, deal 00:16:10.600 --> 00:16:13.740 with it or I would say realize Christ dealt with 00:16:13.740 --> 00:16:19.139 it and walk in who you are in Christ. Remember 00:16:19.139 --> 00:16:23.960 you and Christ are one. Think about this. Let 00:16:23.960 --> 00:16:29.480 this get deep down into your spirit. There is 00:16:29.480 --> 00:16:32.850 no emphasis here. on God desiring to punish, 00:16:33.350 --> 00:16:36.309 but on the seriousness of anything that distorts 00:16:36.309 --> 00:16:41.070 the life of the Kingdom within us. Realize, again, 00:16:41.389 --> 00:16:48.190 Christ dealt with sin. and redeemed you and I 00:16:48.190 --> 00:16:51.309 as sons and daughters. So now we learn to walk 00:16:51.309 --> 00:16:54.429 under the Lordship of Holy Spirit. We partner 00:16:54.429 --> 00:16:57.190 with the Trinity and we trust Holy Spirit to 00:16:57.190 --> 00:17:00.129 transform us more into the image of Christ and 00:17:00.129 --> 00:17:03.730 release the kingdom to the world around us. Let 00:17:03.730 --> 00:17:07.490 me help you. You don't do the transforming. You 00:17:07.490 --> 00:17:10.210 can't. do in the transforming. So as I consider all of this, I think 00:17:33.460 --> 00:17:36.240 the main idea is that we cannot fix the heart. 00:17:37.000 --> 00:17:39.339 You chopping off a body part that you sinned 00:17:39.339 --> 00:17:43.160 with is not fixing anything. Some 00:33:14.099 --> 00:33:17.539 equate the worm with the guilty conscience, for 00:33:17.539 --> 00:33:21.660 example. It is possible. that this refers to 00:33:21.660 --> 00:33:24.279 a mass burial site where maggots continue to 00:33:24.279 --> 00:33:27.819 eat flesh and fire burns continually with corpses. 00:33:28.819 --> 00:33:31.019 Some see this as having been fulfilled by the 00:33:31.019 --> 00:33:33.039 slaughter of Israel's enemies during the time 00:33:33.039 --> 00:33:35.980 of the Maccabees, others as the view toward a 00:33:35.980 --> 00:33:38.240 future slaughter and still others as a description 00:33:38.240 --> 00:33:41.730 of hell. I'm just giving you some different viewpoints 00:33:41.730 --> 00:33:45.150 here of how you can rethink hell.
