And so we're going to do the same thing 00:00:46.259 --> 00:00:49.960 here. We're going to rethink hell together. So we're 00:01:15.500 --> 00:01:19.099 going to kick this off with this title being 00:01:19.099 --> 00:01:22.359 that the word hell isn't in the Bible the way 00:01:22.359 --> 00:01:27.340 that you think. We're going to begin this series, 00:01:27.340 --> 00:01:32.400 and I understand that people have strong opinions 00:01:32.400 --> 00:01:36.420 over this topic, but quite frankly, I know very 00:01:36.420 --> 00:01:39.599 few people who have studied it and not simply 00:01:39.599 --> 00:01:43.200 regurgitated information. My fear, and I speak 00:01:43.200 --> 00:01:48.500 as one who has done this before, is I feel like 00:01:48.500 --> 00:01:51.680 there are many times that we just simply regurgitate 00:01:51.680 --> 00:01:55.420 information that we have heard. What if the picture that we were given 00:03:05.550 --> 00:03:10.259 was not actually what scripture meant? And let 00:03:10.259 --> 00:03:12.479 me say right off the bat, this is not about watering 00:03:12.479 --> 00:03:14.900 down scripture, but it is about taking scripture 00:03:14.900 --> 00:03:19.180 seriously enough to study what the words actually 00:03:19.180 --> 00:03:22.560 meant to the people who first heard them. I want you 00:04:17.740 --> 00:04:21.540 to think about that. Four words, four meanings, 00:04:21.959 --> 00:04:24.740 four different contexts, but our English language 00:04:24.740 --> 00:04:28.579 collapsed them into a single word. Now, those 00:04:28.579 --> 00:04:33.670 words are Sheol, Hades, Gehenna and Tartarus 00:04:33.670 --> 00:04:37.230 and we're going to briefly examine each of those 00:04:37.230 --> 00:04:39.790 four in this episode and then over the next few 00:04:39.790 --> 00:04:42.769 we're going to do a deep dive into each one of 00:04:42.769 --> 00:04:46.430 those. But I want you to imagine for just a moment 00:04:46.430 --> 00:04:50.430 if we took the words house, apartment, hotel 00:04:50.430 --> 00:04:55.329 and barn and translated them all as building. 00:04:56.459 --> 00:04:59.060 Technically, is that correct? I'm sure one could 00:04:59.060 --> 00:05:02.120 argue that they are all buildings, but it is 00:05:02.120 --> 00:05:06.300 incredibly misleading. So if I was to tell you 00:05:06.300 --> 00:05:09.459 I want you to go to the building and what I meant 00:05:09.459 --> 00:05:12.579 was go into the house and I tell the group of 00:05:12.579 --> 00:05:14.860 people this and they all scatter some go to the 00:05:14.860 --> 00:05:17.800 house, some go to the hotel, some go to the barn. 00:05:18.199 --> 00:05:22.199 They all went to a building, but only a certain 00:05:22.199 --> 00:05:25.000 few went to the house that I was actually referencing. 00:05:25.810 --> 00:05:28.170 See what happens. This is exactly what happened 00:05:28.170 --> 00:05:31.449 with the word hell. Why does this matter? Because 00:05:31.449 --> 00:05:35.110 if we misunderstand the words, we misunderstand 00:05:35.110 --> 00:05:38.769 the message. And if we misunderstand the message, 00:05:39.069 --> 00:05:43.509 we misunderstand God's character. And that's 00:05:43.509 --> 00:05:46.670 important for us to take hold of. So we're going 00:05:46.670 --> 00:05:50.689 to kick this off with defining SHIO. So that's 00:05:50.689 --> 00:05:53.269 the first one we're going to look at. Shio is 00:05:53.269 --> 00:05:55.589 a Hebrew word that appears throughout the Old 00:05:55.589 --> 00:05:58.949 Testament. Let me kick this off real quickly 00:05:58.949 --> 00:06:03.389 here. Shio does not mean a torture chamber. Shio 00:06:03.389 --> 00:06:06.029 referred to the realm of the dead. It referred 00:06:06.029 --> 00:06:09.769 to the grave. It referred to the unseen place 00:06:09.769 --> 00:06:13.920 of death. Psalm 6 and 5 says, In the darkness 00:06:13.920 --> 00:06:16.360 of death, who remembers your name and worship? 00:06:16.699 --> 00:06:19.620 How could I bring you praise if I'm buried in 00:06:19.620 --> 00:06:23.879 a tomb? Again, the word used here for death is 00:06:23.879 --> 00:06:28.279 the Hebrew word sheol. It's the realm of the 00:06:28.279 --> 00:06:31.019 dead. This is the first Psalm here to mention 00:06:31.019 --> 00:06:35.050 the grave or sheol. It is depicted in the poetic 00:06:35.050 --> 00:06:38.230 literature of the Hebrew as a vast wasteland, 00:06:38.709 --> 00:06:42.089 a stronghold of darkness and a beast of prey. 00:06:43.769 --> 00:06:46.990 Notice that this verse has nothing to do with 00:06:46.990 --> 00:06:51.470 torment. It is simply describing death. And if 00:06:51.470 --> 00:06:54.350 you look at the Old Testament, both the righteous 00:06:54.350 --> 00:06:58.129 and the wicked, both of them went to the place 00:06:58.129 --> 00:07:01.850 called Sheol. Again, important for us to think 00:07:01.850 --> 00:07:05.230 about. Then we have Ecclesiastes chapter 9 verse 00:07:05.230 --> 00:07:08.110 10. It says this whatever you do do well for 00:07:08.110 --> 00:07:11.730 when you go to the grave Sheo, there will be 00:07:11.730 --> 00:07:16.310 no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom Now 00:07:16.310 --> 00:07:20.870 I'm curious as I'm looking at these Because I 00:07:20.870 --> 00:07:23.230 am using just so, you know, I'm using the passion 00:07:23.230 --> 00:07:27.009 translation and I'm also using the new living 00:07:27.009 --> 00:07:30.310 Translation, but I wanted to take just a moment 00:07:30.310 --> 00:07:34.040 because I didn't do this beforehand I'm gonna 00:07:34.040 --> 00:07:38.720 pull this back up in the King James just to see 00:07:38.720 --> 00:07:42.779 what the language is so if you look at Ecclesiastes 00:07:42.779 --> 00:07:50.240 chapter 9 verse 10 and Okay, so it does use the 00:07:50.240 --> 00:07:53.100 word grave there, so that's good I was just curious 00:07:53.100 --> 00:07:55.939 to see that while I'm doing this recording sometimes 00:07:55.939 --> 00:08:00.860 it's good for us to stop and do a little Looking 00:08:00.860 --> 00:08:05.639 at it together So again for when you go to the 00:08:05.639 --> 00:08:08.040 grave she all there will be no work or planning 00:08:08.040 --> 00:08:10.420 or knowledge or wisdom So again here we have 00:08:10.420 --> 00:08:14.759 not torture imagery. It's simply death imagery 00:08:14.759 --> 00:08:18.500 Then we have Psalm chapter 16 verse 10. It says 00:08:18.500 --> 00:08:21.279 for you will not abandon me to the realm of death 00:08:21.279 --> 00:08:24.339 Nor will you allow your faithful one to experience 00:08:24.339 --> 00:08:26.959 corruption? The new King James would say for 00:08:26.959 --> 00:08:30.829 you will not leave my soul in Sheol Now this 00:08:30.829 --> 00:08:33.830 passage is an important one to remember because 00:08:33.830 --> 00:08:37.929 in Acts chapter 2 verse 27 Peter quotes this 00:08:37.929 --> 00:08:41.350 psalm and applies it to Jesus when he says no 00:08:41.350 --> 00:08:43.990 wonder my heart is glad and my glory celebrates 00:08:43.990 --> 00:08:46.830 my mouth is filled with his praises and I have 00:08:46.830 --> 00:08:49.049 hope that my body will live because you will 00:08:49.049 --> 00:08:51.909 not leave my soul among the dead nor will you 00:08:51.909 --> 00:08:56.909 allow your sacred ones to experience decay so 00:08:57.179 --> 00:09:01.179 Peter is quoting this in Acts chapter 2 when 00:09:01.179 --> 00:09:04.740 he's referencing Psalm 16 10. And it's just important 00:09:04.740 --> 00:09:07.879 to remember that Jesus entered death, but he 00:09:07.879 --> 00:09:11.200 was not left there. This was not about Jesus 00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:15.259 escaping torture. This was about Jesus defeating 00:09:15.259 --> 00:09:20.220 death itself. Important for us to grab hold of 00:09:20.220 --> 00:09:23.779 and to remember. Alright, then we have the word 00:09:23.779 --> 00:09:26.419 Hades. This would be the Greek equivalent to 00:09:26.419 --> 00:09:31.279 the Hebrew word Sheol. You could say it's the 00:09:31.279 --> 00:09:34.759 parallel meaning, essentially. Hades carries 00:09:34.759 --> 00:09:37.559 the same general meaning. Again, it's the realm 00:09:37.559 --> 00:09:40.200 of the dead. It's not eternal punishment. It's 00:09:40.200 --> 00:09:44.259 not final judgment. In Jewish thought, actually, 00:09:44.399 --> 00:09:47.960 Hades is a temporary shadowy realm often used 00:09:47.960 --> 00:09:51.830 symbolically. Jesus, again, just as the rethinking 00:09:51.830 --> 00:09:56.730 in times, Jesus is speaking their language. That's 00:09:56.730 --> 00:09:58.909 important to remember. He's speaking to a group 00:09:58.909 --> 00:10:02.169 of people that would have understood what he 00:10:02.169 --> 00:10:06.990 was referencing and what he was stating. Luke 00:10:06.990 --> 00:10:10.889 16 is where many people will point... to in scripture 00:10:10.889 --> 00:10:14.450 as proof of torment. I've heard this argument 00:10:14.450 --> 00:10:17.990 myself and it's the story of the rich man and 00:10:17.990 --> 00:10:22.370 Lazarus. So I want you to understand though, 00:10:22.730 --> 00:10:26.029 Jesus, the same as rethinking in times, Jesus 00:10:26.029 --> 00:10:31.850 often used parables, okay, filled with imagery 00:10:31.850 --> 00:10:36.159 and familiar to his Jewish audience. So we're 00:10:36.159 --> 00:10:38.940 going to look at Luke chapter 16 and we're going 00:10:38.940 --> 00:10:43.159 to read verses 19 through 31. So just bear with 00:10:43.159 --> 00:10:45.360 me, you can pause this, get your own Bible out, 00:10:45.559 --> 00:10:48.019 run with it with me. We're going to start in 00:10:48.019 --> 00:10:51.200 verse 19, Luke chapter 16 says, Jesus continued 00:10:51.200 --> 00:10:54.340 there once was a very rich man who had the finest 00:10:54.340 --> 00:10:57.279 things imaginable living every day enjoying his 00:10:57.279 --> 00:11:01.679 life of opulent luxury. Opulent simply means 00:11:01.679 --> 00:11:06.210 lavishly abundant. Outside the gates of his mansion 00:11:06.210 --> 00:11:09.149 was a poor beggar named Lazarus. He lay there 00:11:09.149 --> 00:11:11.710 every day covered with boils and all the neighborhood 00:11:11.710 --> 00:11:14.929 dogs would come and lick his open sores. The 00:11:14.929 --> 00:11:17.110 only food he had to eat was the garbage that 00:11:17.110 --> 00:11:20.529 the rich man threw away. One day poor Lazarus 00:11:20.529 --> 00:11:23.169 died and the angels of God came and escorted 00:11:23.169 --> 00:11:27.029 his spirit into paradise. The day came that the 00:11:27.029 --> 00:11:31.360 rich man died. In hell, Hades He looked up from 00:11:31.360 --> 00:11:33.879 his torment and saw Abraham in the distance, 00:11:34.480 --> 00:11:37.059 and Lazarus was standing beside him in the glory. 00:11:37.620 --> 00:11:40.379 The rich man shouted, Father Abraham, Father 00:11:40.379 --> 00:11:45.399 Abraham, have mercy on me. Send Lazarus to dip 00:11:45.399 --> 00:11:48.539 his finger in water and come to cool my tongue, 00:11:48.580 --> 00:11:52.480 for I am in agony in these flames of fire. But 00:11:52.480 --> 00:11:54.519 Abraham responded, My friend, don't you remember 00:11:54.519 --> 00:11:56.580 while you were alive, you had all you desired. 00:11:56.899 --> 00:12:01.110 You surround yourself in luxury. while Lazarus 00:12:01.110 --> 00:12:04.309 had nothing. Now Lazarus dwells on the comforts 00:12:04.309 --> 00:12:07.450 of paradise and you are in agony. Besides, between 00:12:07.450 --> 00:12:10.830 us is a huge chasm that cannot be bridged, nor 00:12:10.830 --> 00:12:13.409 can anyone cross from one realm to the other. 00:12:13.730 --> 00:12:16.429 Even if he wanted, the rich man continued, then 00:12:16.429 --> 00:12:20.990 let me ask you, Father Abraham, please send Lazarus 00:12:20.990 --> 00:12:29.460 to my relatives. Hold on I've got I did not have 00:12:29.460 --> 00:12:32.659 all my scriptures here. They have the teachings of Moses 00:12:57.240 --> 00:13:00.899 and the revelation of the prophets Let them hear 00:13:00.899 --> 00:13:03.779 them What if they're not listening the rich man 00:13:03.779 --> 00:13:06.360 added if someone from the dead were to go and 00:13:06.360 --> 00:13:09.360 warn them They would surely repent Abraham said 00:13:09.360 --> 00:13:11.960 to him if they wouldn't listen to Moses and the 00:13:11.960 --> 00:13:14.899 prophets Neither would they be convinced if someone 00:13:14.899 --> 00:13:20.879 were raised from the dead? again important scripture 00:13:20.879 --> 00:13:23.399 for us to wrestle with First thing I want you 00:13:23.399 --> 00:13:26.320 to notice, it's a parable. If you follow what 00:13:26.320 --> 00:13:28.740 is happening around this story in Luke chapter 00:13:28.740 --> 00:13:31.940 16, we have in Luke chapter 15, you have the 00:13:31.940 --> 00:13:34.600 story of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the 00:13:34.600 --> 00:13:37.539 lost son, and then you have an unjust steward, 00:13:37.600 --> 00:13:41.600 and then you have this story. The other question is this, how can 00:16:12.299 --> 00:16:16.080 people in paradise watch and converse with those 00:16:16.080 --> 00:16:20.440 being tormented? That to me sounds kind of sickening. 00:16:21.100 --> 00:16:23.980 If you get pleasure out of watching someone else 00:16:23.980 --> 00:16:27.879 suffer, I would question your heart in that moment 00:16:27.879 --> 00:16:33.409 because that's... So just understand this is not a 00:16:51.070 --> 00:16:53.350 story of a travel brochure of heaven and hell. 00:16:53.429 --> 00:16:58.149 It is a parable. It's a story. Luke 16, 14, Jesus 00:16:58.149 --> 00:17:01.590 addressed the Pharisees of being lovers of money. 00:17:02.029 --> 00:17:04.750 So this story is aimed directly at religious 00:17:04.750 --> 00:17:08.230 leaders who believe that wealth equals God's 00:17:08.230 --> 00:17:12.009 favor and that poverty equals God's disfavor. 00:17:12.490 --> 00:17:16.269 And Jesus, in telling of this parable, is flipping 00:17:16.269 --> 00:17:19.509 the entire framework, something Jesus was really 00:17:19.509 --> 00:17:24.359 good at. This is the only parable where a character 00:17:24.359 --> 00:17:29.400 is named and that also my friend is purposeful. 00:17:30.460 --> 00:17:34.339 Lazarus means God is my help. The poor man in 00:17:34.339 --> 00:17:38.680 this story is given a name. The rich man has 00:17:38.680 --> 00:17:44.539 no name. He is defined only by his status. That 00:17:44.539 --> 00:17:48.259 concept alone would have offended the Pharisees. 00:17:48.380 --> 00:17:51.140 In their worldview, the rich man should be the 00:17:51.140 --> 00:17:55.299 hero and the poor man should be cursed. Why? 00:17:55.920 --> 00:17:58.700 Again, goes back to what I just said. The religious 00:30:03.180 --> 00:30:07.059 leaders could say, uh, I've never committed adultery, 00:30:07.319 --> 00:30:10.140 but Jesus says, let's talk about what is happening 00:30:10.140 --> 00:30:13.980 in your heart, the place no one but you and I 00:30:13.980 --> 00:30:17.960 can see. I want you to really wrestle with that 00:30:17.960 --> 00:30:21.640 because you, you can, you might can say, Hey, 00:30:21.799 --> 00:30:25.779 I've not murdered anybody. Okay. You might could 00:30:25.779 --> 00:30:29.599 say that. But what about the hate that you hold 00:30:29.599 --> 00:30:34.019 in your heart? Jesus is showing 00:31:30.039 --> 00:31:33.019 that if righteousness depends on perfectly controlling 00:31:33.019 --> 00:31:37.839 every desire, none of us can succeed. The Sermon 00:31:37.839 --> 00:31:41.039 on the Mount steadily raises the standard. You've 00:31:41.039 --> 00:31:43.220 got murder which is caused by anger, adultery 00:31:43.220 --> 00:31:46.279 which is caused by lust, loving your neighbors, 00:31:46.380 --> 00:31:49.500 loving your enemies. Finally, be perfect as your 00:31:49.500 --> 00:31:53.369 father is perfect. If we read only as a new law, 00:31:53.589 --> 00:31:56.430 my friend, we're crushed.
