So family 00:01:22.040 --> 00:01:24.719 is more important than friends. So I want to start 00:02:44.449 --> 00:02:49.050 with the word tribulation itself And it's meaning 00:02:49.050 --> 00:02:52.870 the Greek word is the ellipsis and it means pressure 00:02:52.870 --> 00:02:57.110 affliction trouble and persecution This is not 00:02:57.110 --> 00:03:00.590 and has nothing to do with planet destruction 00:03:00.590 --> 00:03:04.530 and it has nothing to do with the end of existence 00:03:05.120 --> 00:03:07.979 So we're going to read John chapter 16 verse 00:03:07.979 --> 00:03:11.120 33 and it says and everything I've taught you 00:03:11.120 --> 00:03:14.360 is so that the peace which is in me will be in 00:03:14.360 --> 00:03:17.539 you and will give you great confidence as you 00:03:17.539 --> 00:03:21.060 rest in me for in this unbelieving world you 00:03:21.060 --> 00:03:25.120 will experience trouble and sorrows but you must 00:03:25.120 --> 00:03:29.360 be courageous for I have conquered the world. 00:03:30.120 --> 00:03:32.360 I love Dr. Simmons has a footnote here it says 00:03:32.360 --> 00:03:35.610 Jesus has taken away the power this world has 00:03:35.610 --> 00:03:39.430 to defeat us and has conquered it for us, I would 00:03:39.430 --> 00:03:44.629 add and as us. And he says peace is resting in 00:03:44.629 --> 00:03:48.229 his victory. So the question is in that verse 00:03:48.229 --> 00:03:50.930 that we read, did Jesus say that you might have 00:03:50.930 --> 00:03:54.430 trouble and sorrow someday? No, he said you will 00:03:54.430 --> 00:03:58.389 have tribulation. You will have trouble and sorrow, 00:03:58.449 --> 00:04:01.909 meaning it was already a part of life and it 00:04:01.909 --> 00:04:04.689 was not some future event that he's trying to 00:04:04.689 --> 00:04:08.349 declare. Another verse, Acts chapter 14 verse 00:04:08.349 --> 00:04:11.479 22, and it says this. At each place they went 00:04:11.479 --> 00:04:13.379 they strengthened the lives of the believers 00:04:13.379 --> 00:04:15.680 and encouraged them to go deeper in their faith 00:04:15.680 --> 00:04:19.259 and they taught them it is necessary for us to 00:04:19.259 --> 00:04:21.379 enter into the realm of God's kingdom because 00:04:21.379 --> 00:04:25.620 that's the only way we will endure our many trials 00:04:25.620 --> 00:04:29.370 and persecutions. Dr. Simmons again has a note 00:04:29.370 --> 00:04:32.149 here says that is the only way to avoid the oppression 00:04:32.149 --> 00:04:35.730 of the age is to enter deeper into God's kingdom 00:04:35.730 --> 00:04:38.649 realm an alternate translation would be through 00:04:38.649 --> 00:04:41.730 great tribulation we enter into God's kingdom 00:04:41.730 --> 00:04:44.189 realm neither translation of the sentence implies 00:04:44.189 --> 00:04:47.810 a future kingdom but a kingdom realm that is 00:04:47.810 --> 00:04:54.379 presently presently accessible It's important 00:04:54.379 --> 00:04:56.759 for us to understand that. So the tribulation, 00:04:57.040 --> 00:04:59.319 not the tribulation, but tribulation in general 00:04:59.319 --> 00:05:02.120 is not rare. It is part of living faithfully 00:05:02.120 --> 00:05:07.000 in a broken world. So another verse that people 00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:09.819 like to use when referring to the tribulation, 00:05:10.259 --> 00:05:19.600 it comes from Matthew chapter 24. Let me pull 00:05:19.600 --> 00:05:22.750 that up. Matthew chapter 24. Verse 1 is where 00:05:22.750 --> 00:05:25.149 I'm going to start at. It says, Jesus was leaving 00:05:25.149 --> 00:05:27.629 the temple court. It says, disciples came to 00:05:27.629 --> 00:05:30.629 him and pointed out the beautiful architecture 00:05:30.629 --> 00:05:34.069 of the temple. And Jesus turned to them and said, 00:05:34.290 --> 00:05:37.149 take a good look at all these things, for I'm 00:05:37.149 --> 00:05:40.589 telling you, there will not be one stone left 00:05:40.589 --> 00:05:45.029 upon another. It will all be leveled. So Jesus 00:05:45.029 --> 00:05:47.610 says not one stone on the temple will be left 00:05:47.610 --> 00:05:49.949 upon another that's important because that starts 00:05:49.949 --> 00:05:54.430 the whole conversation then we have Matthew chapter 00:05:54.430 --> 00:05:58.670 24 verse 3 Where Jesus asked when will these 00:05:58.670 --> 00:06:01.589 things be? What things a destruction of the temple 00:06:01.589 --> 00:06:03.870 again? He's not talking about the end of the 00:06:03.870 --> 00:06:05.509 planet This is some of the stuff we addressed 00:06:05.509 --> 00:06:08.689 in previous episodes if you didn't listen to 00:06:08.689 --> 00:06:11.629 those go back and listen to those But now let's 00:06:11.629 --> 00:06:14.930 pick it up in Matthew chapter 24 we're going 00:06:14.930 --> 00:06:17.509 to start in verse 15 and run through about verse 00:06:17.509 --> 00:06:21.509 21 and it says this when you witness what Daniel 00:06:21.509 --> 00:06:24.230 prophesied the disgusting destroyer taking his 00:06:24.230 --> 00:06:28.050 stand in the holy place let the reader learn 00:06:28.050 --> 00:06:31.209 then those in the land of Judah must escape to 00:06:31.209 --> 00:06:33.620 the higher ground On that day, if you happen 00:06:33.620 --> 00:06:35.959 to be outside, don't go back inside to gather 00:06:35.959 --> 00:06:38.199 belongings. If you're working out in the field, 00:06:38.199 --> 00:06:40.620 don't run back home to get a coat. It will be 00:06:40.620 --> 00:06:42.879 especially hard for pregnant women and for those 00:06:42.879 --> 00:06:45.620 nursing their babies in those days. So I pray 00:06:45.620 --> 00:06:47.980 that your escape will not be during the winter 00:06:47.980 --> 00:06:51.000 months or on a Sabbath, for this will be a time 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:53.899 of great misery beyond the magnitude of anything 00:06:53.899 --> 00:06:57.819 the world has ever seen or ever will see. Unless 00:06:57.819 --> 00:07:01.339 God limited those days, no one would escape. 00:07:01.720 --> 00:07:08.079 So again, he's giving very specific language 00:07:08.079 --> 00:07:14.439 and very specific timelines for them. And basically, 00:07:17.459 --> 00:07:21.060 basically he's telling them all this stuff and 00:07:21.060 --> 00:07:25.459 he plainly tells them, let me go back up. Where 00:07:25.459 --> 00:07:33.220 did my first go that I'm looking for? that day 00:07:33.220 --> 00:07:35.860 if you happen to be outside so he's giving them 00:07:35.860 --> 00:07:38.839 very specific timeline very specific instructions 00:07:38.839 --> 00:07:42.560 not for something later on 2 ,000 years later 00:07:42.560 --> 00:07:46.720 he's giving the people he's talking to a very 00:07:46.720 --> 00:07:50.740 specific timeline it's about a real location 00:07:50.740 --> 00:07:59.360 not symbolic this time not global it is local 00:07:59.720 --> 00:08:02.740 talking about a local place. So Jesus described 00:08:02.740 --> 00:08:06.160 the tribulation connected to Jerusalem, not the 00:08:06.160 --> 00:08:09.300 entire planet. And that's a major clarity if 00:08:09.300 --> 00:08:12.959 you really let it get to you. So again, let me 00:08:12.959 --> 00:08:18.500 get back to where my notes are. So again, this 00:08:18.500 --> 00:08:20.879 actually happened. The tribulation that Jesus 00:08:20.879 --> 00:08:26.439 is warning about here became reality in AD 70. 00:08:26.990 --> 00:08:30.709 So about 40 years after Jesus spoke these words 00:08:30.709 --> 00:08:35.769 in Matthew 24 Jerusalem was surrounded by Roman 00:08:35.769 --> 00:08:42.570 armies This happened in AD 70 under Roman general 00:08:42.570 --> 00:08:52.629 Titus So again, and I know this some of the stuff 00:08:52.629 --> 00:08:54.309 is repetitive I'm trying to see if I can cut 00:08:54.309 --> 00:08:56.700 any of this out but Really, I think it all ties 00:08:56.700 --> 00:09:01.059 to the tribulation. So you got to go back and 00:09:01.059 --> 00:09:02.940 think. I know we discussed this previously, but 00:09:02.940 --> 00:09:06.539 this what Jesus is saying that's going to happen 00:09:06.539 --> 00:09:09.600 actually happened. Jerusalem was surrounded. 00:09:09.940 --> 00:09:13.019 They were trapped. They were cut off. Food ran 00:09:13.019 --> 00:09:16.299 out. Water became scarce. And what happens when 00:09:16.299 --> 00:09:19.159 you start doing all that in a city? Violence 00:09:19.159 --> 00:09:22.220 broke out inside the city. People were starving. 00:09:22.590 --> 00:09:27.509 Chaos increased fear began to spread Inside the 00:09:27.509 --> 00:09:29.750 city you got different Jewish factions who fought 00:09:29.750 --> 00:09:33.169 each other So instead of unity you have division 00:09:33.169 --> 00:09:36.549 which guess what guys this made survival much 00:09:36.549 --> 00:09:39.549 harder So then when you understand some of this 00:09:39.549 --> 00:09:43.950 You understand what Jesus said stuff if you work 00:09:43.950 --> 00:09:46.519 on the field Don't run back home to get a coat 00:09:46.519 --> 00:09:49.399 It'll be especially hard for pregnant women and 00:09:49.399 --> 00:09:51.720 for those nursing their babies in those days 00:09:51.720 --> 00:09:54.200 So pray that your escape will not be during the 00:09:54.200 --> 00:09:57.620 winter months or for the Sabbaths He's literally 00:09:57.620 --> 00:10:01.340 telling them this is gonna be tough When you 00:10:01.340 --> 00:10:04.820 see these signs get out flee leave this area 00:10:04.820 --> 00:10:10.559 because the truth is With all this the temple 00:10:10.559 --> 00:10:14.159 was in fact destroyed Eventually what happens 00:10:14.159 --> 00:10:16.679 is Romans, again I know we went over this previously, 00:10:17.259 --> 00:10:19.779 but eventually Romans breached the city, the 00:10:19.779 --> 00:10:24.860 temple was in fact burned, exactly as Jesus predicted, 00:10:25.279 --> 00:10:29.700 not one stone was left standing. So when you 00:10:29.700 --> 00:10:34.320 have Jesus warning in Luke 21 and 20, when you 00:10:34.320 --> 00:10:37.179 see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, know that 00:10:37.179 --> 00:10:41.100 its desolation is near, that is exactly what 00:10:41.279 --> 00:10:45.059 happened. So the tribulation Jesus warned about 00:10:45.059 --> 00:10:52.539 did become reality in AD 70. All right, let's 00:10:52.539 --> 00:11:07.460 look at Matthew chapter 24 verse 21 again. Jesus 00:11:07.460 --> 00:11:10.419 again here, that's the passion translation. Other 00:11:10.419 --> 00:11:13.179 translations would say there will be great tribulation. 00:11:13.480 --> 00:11:16.340 This is not random suffering, but it's connected 00:11:16.340 --> 00:11:20.059 to a specific event. It's connected to Jerusalem. 00:11:20.159 --> 00:11:23.320 It's connected to the temple destruction, and 00:11:23.320 --> 00:11:26.460 it's connected to covenant transition. Again, 00:11:26.460 --> 00:11:30.179 why was it so severe? Why was this such a horrible 00:11:30.179 --> 00:11:33.179 time? Because it was national, it's religious, 00:11:33.539 --> 00:11:36.440 it's cultural, and it's historical. Everything 00:11:36.440 --> 00:11:41.470 changed on the temple. Everything centered on 00:11:41.470 --> 00:11:45.690 the temple collapsing. That changed Jewish life 00:11:45.690 --> 00:11:52.850 forever. This tribulation was great because it 00:11:52.850 --> 00:11:57.649 ended an age. It ended a particular era. Not 00:11:57.649 --> 00:12:00.870 because it destroyed the planet. It transitioned 00:12:00.870 --> 00:12:05.539 old covenant to new covenant. It separated something. 00:12:05.840 --> 00:12:08.419 So this was very severe. It's very intentional. 00:12:08.899 --> 00:12:13.159 What happened, what Jesus prophesied actually 00:12:13.159 --> 00:12:16.620 did happen just as he proclaimed that it would 00:12:16.620 --> 00:12:19.659 happen. And all of it was really intentional. 00:12:20.840 --> 00:12:26.460 So what about tribulation after that? Christians still faced persecution, 00:12:37.289 --> 00:12:39.929 still face pressure, suffering all throughout 00:12:39.929 --> 00:12:43.190 history and even today. Now I want to say something 00:12:43.190 --> 00:12:45.190 that's going to hurt some people's feelings but 00:12:45.190 --> 00:12:49.370 not in America. Let me help you understand you 00:12:49.370 --> 00:12:54.929 are in this nation as far as I know We are a 00:12:54.929 --> 00:12:58.470 very free people. We are not facing persecution. 00:12:58.590 --> 00:13:01.730 We are not facing pressure and suffering like 00:13:01.730 --> 00:13:03.529 some other nations, and we'll get to that in 00:13:03.529 --> 00:13:08.470 a minute, like some other nations are. I've heard 00:13:08.470 --> 00:13:11.710 pastors and stuff talk about the persecution 00:13:11.710 --> 00:13:14.769 that we're facing. My friend, I live a pretty 00:13:14.769 --> 00:13:19.169 good life. I mean, I'm a dad, a husband. I got 00:13:19.169 --> 00:13:22.470 three beautiful children. My wife and I had been 00:13:22.470 --> 00:13:27.809 married for, let's see, 14, it'll be 14 years 00:13:27.809 --> 00:13:31.330 this year. We've got three beautiful children, 00:13:32.629 --> 00:13:36.029 two girls and a boy. I mean, we have life pretty 00:13:36.029 --> 00:13:38.269 good. I mean, you can see I'm in my basement 00:13:38.269 --> 00:13:40.990 in my office area, the place that I've made my 00:13:40.990 --> 00:13:42.789 office. You can see I've got a bookshelf behind 00:13:42.789 --> 00:13:46.600 me. We're very blessed people. Now we're not 00:13:46.600 --> 00:13:50.279 millionaires or anything yet, but we're very 00:13:50.279 --> 00:13:52.659 blessed people. In North Korea Christianity is banned. 00:14:54.970 --> 00:14:58.409 Believers can be imprisoned or executed. Somalia 00:14:58.409 --> 00:15:01.850 conversion from Islam can lead to death. Yemen 00:15:01.850 --> 00:15:04.450 open Christian practice is extremely dangerous. 00:15:05.110 --> 00:15:07.409 Saudi Arabia public Christian worship is forbidden. 00:15:08.269 --> 00:15:10.629 In Libya Christians often operate secretly due 00:15:10.629 --> 00:15:15.539 to threats or instability. There is a much larger group 00:16:07.460 --> 00:16:10.039 around 50 countries are considered very high 00:16:10.039 --> 00:16:13.460 or extreme risk. Examples of that Pakistan, India, 00:16:13.519 --> 00:16:17.799 Nigeria, China, Sudan, Myanmar, Bangladesh. These 00:16:17.799 --> 00:16:20.440 places may technically allow Christianity, but 00:16:20.440 --> 00:16:23.080 believers will face harassment, arrest, violence, 00:16:23.379 --> 00:16:26.759 or church closure. Some big picture numbers here 00:16:26.759 --> 00:16:30.019 about five to ten countries. Christianity is 00:16:30.019 --> 00:16:32.480 effectively illegal or banned in practice about 00:16:32.480 --> 00:16:35.940 50 countries very high extreme persecution. So 00:16:35.940 --> 00:16:40.139 again not in America but you do have about 380 00:16:40.139 --> 00:16:44.419 plus million Christians worldwide who face significant 00:16:44.419 --> 00:16:49.960 persecution or discrimination. See, we talk about 00:16:49.960 --> 00:16:53.080 tribulation like it's only coming Sunday, but 00:16:53.080 --> 00:16:56.080 for millions of believers around the world, tribulation 00:16:56.080 --> 00:17:00.000 is not prophecy. It's daily life. Meanwhile, 00:17:00.039 --> 00:17:02.779 we gather freely here in America, open our Bibles, 00:17:03.039 --> 00:17:06.299 openly worship without fear. That's not normal. 00:17:06.799 --> 00:17:09.359 That's a blessing if you live in this country. 00:17:10.259 --> 00:17:13.640 The idea of a seven -year Tribulation does not 00:17:13.640 --> 00:17:16.519 even come from a verse that says there will be 00:17:16.519 --> 00:17:18.960 seven years of tribulation. It comes from interpreting 00:17:18.960 --> 00:17:22.319 Daniel's final week as seven years, then placing 00:17:22.319 --> 00:17:24.839 that week into the future, separated by a gap 00:17:24.839 --> 00:17:28.059 of thousands of years. That system again became 00:17:28.059 --> 00:17:30.920 popular like we talked about last week. in the 00:17:30.920 --> 00:17:34.000 1800s not from the early church. So again let's 00:17:34.000 --> 00:17:36.559 connect all this back to Revelation. Revelation 00:17:36.559 --> 00:17:39.500 was written to believers that were already suffering, 00:17:39.940 --> 00:17:42.660 they were already in tribulation, they're not 00:17:42.660 --> 00:17:46.099 waiting for one, they're actually living through 00:17:46.099 --> 00:17:51.049 it. So here's the thing that if we believe tribulations 00:17:51.049 --> 00:17:54.150 only for the future, we may decide to live in 00:17:54.150 --> 00:17:57.230 fear. We expect disaster. We look for all the 00:17:57.230 --> 00:18:00.829 headlines to fall in place. We focus on survival 00:18:00.829 --> 00:18:04.630 instead of faithfulness, hope, and kingdom living. 00:18:05.609 --> 00:18:09.609 Jesus' goal was preparation, not panic. He gave 00:18:09.609 --> 00:18:12.890 warning so people could act wisely, stay faithful, 00:18:13.230 --> 00:18:17.309 and remain steady. Not saying that we're 00:20:14.029 --> 00:20:16.609 not gonna face hard times and difficult seasons, 00:20:17.150 --> 00:20:21.069 but to take those and throw it 2 ,000 years into 00:20:21.069 --> 00:20:27.740 the future, I believe is not correct. Jesus was 00:20:27.740 --> 00:20:32.680 talking to a specific group of people and these 00:20:32.680 --> 00:20:36.220 people experienced exactly what Jesus told them. 00:20:36.599 --> 00:20:38.799 And I feel like he does tell us that, you know, 00:20:38.799 --> 00:20:41.279 you're going to have struggles and you're going 00:20:41.279 --> 00:20:44.519 to have troubles. You're going to have tribulation 00:20:44.519 --> 00:20:51.619 in this world. Here in America, we are free people. 00:20:53.519 --> 00:20:56.619 We should not take that for granted. Because 00:20:56.619 --> 00:20:59.619 we don't face, we're not a part of that 380 million 00:20:59.619 --> 00:21:03.619 who face actual persecution every single day 00:21:03.619 --> 00:21:06.539 for their beliefs. I think that should be something 00:21:06.539 --> 00:21:10.279 that we hold on to, that we learn to appreciate 00:21:10.279 --> 00:21:14.339 and to value and to protect with our rights as 00:21:14.339 --> 00:21:20.599 an American citizen. Now I'm kingdom first, American 00:21:20.599 --> 00:21:25.880 second. That's just my take on things. I think 00:21:25.880 --> 00:21:28.700 it's important to understand some of this, how 00:21:28.700 --> 00:21:32.259 Jesus meant it. I think it helps give us more 00:21:32.259 --> 00:21:35.480 hope and the ability to look more hopeful into 00:21:35.480 --> 00:21:39.759 the future. To know that there's not, and again 00:21:39.759 --> 00:21:42.079 in my opinion, that there's not some great big 00:21:42.079 --> 00:21:44.900 tribulation coming, not a rapture coming. We 00:21:44.900 --> 00:21:48.740 are here to occupy until he comes. Catch that. 00:21:49.700 --> 00:21:54.339 We are here to occupy until he comes. That's 00:21:54.339 --> 00:21:58.299 what it's about. Us lighting it up, us expanding 00:21:58.299 --> 00:22:00.420 the kingdom of heaven, releasing the kingdom 00:22:00.420 --> 00:22:03.380 through us, partnering with Holy Spirit, partnering 00:22:03.380 --> 00:22:06.460 with the Trinity, partnering and releasing heaven 00:22:06.460 --> 00:22:10.480 on earth.
