What happened 00:00:24.500 --> 00:00:28.850 in the year 70 A .D. as it concerns to the prophetic 00:00:28.850 --> 00:00:32.670 words that Jesus spoke. Last week we talked about 00:00:32.670 --> 00:00:34.829 a lot of the imagery, the prophetic symbolism, 00:00:34.929 --> 00:00:37.770 all that kind of stuff. If you didn't catch that, 00:00:37.850 --> 00:00:40.049 I encourage you to go back and re -listen to 00:00:40.049 --> 00:00:42.250 that, re -watch that. But this week we're going 00:00:42.250 --> 00:00:46.390 to talk about what happened in the year 70 A 00:00:46.390 --> 00:00:48.810 .D. And I want us to rethink some things, maybe 00:00:48.810 --> 00:00:52.490 reintroduce another lens to look at what Jesus 00:00:52.490 --> 00:00:55.289 was talking about in certain scriptures that 00:00:55.289 --> 00:00:58.200 we'll look at today. and understand that Jesus 00:00:58.200 --> 00:01:02.759 is not talking vaguely about some random disastrous 00:01:02.759 --> 00:01:07.200 event far off in the future, 2 ,000 some years 00:01:07.200 --> 00:01:12.340 later. He specifically was warning of Jerusalem's 00:01:12.340 --> 00:01:14.359 coming judgment, the destruction of the temple, 00:01:14.459 --> 00:01:17.159 and the end of an old covenant world centered 00:01:17.159 --> 00:01:21.159 on that temple system in that day and time. So 00:01:21.159 --> 00:01:24.640 in the year 70 AD, just to real quick give you 00:01:24.640 --> 00:01:29.840 a... viewpoint, Rome surrounded Jerusalem, they 00:01:29.840 --> 00:01:32.819 destroyed the city, burned the second temple, 00:01:33.519 --> 00:01:36.680 and that brought that age to a dramatic close. 00:01:37.299 --> 00:01:39.879 And here's the thing, when I started looking 00:01:39.879 --> 00:01:43.760 into what happened in the year 70 AD, probably, 00:01:43.900 --> 00:01:45.939 I wouldn't say no more than five years ago, I 00:01:45.939 --> 00:01:47.540 would like to say probably around three years 00:01:47.540 --> 00:01:52.120 ago, this was new information for me. This is 00:01:52.120 --> 00:01:54.180 not what I grew up believing, not what I grew 00:01:54.180 --> 00:01:56.670 up understanding. but the more I began to hear 00:01:56.670 --> 00:02:00.189 about this and I began to read on it, and what 00:02:00.189 --> 00:02:03.709 little bit I did solidified what I believed as 00:02:03.709 --> 00:02:06.049 far as end times are concerned. It solidified 00:02:06.049 --> 00:02:09.530 that I no longer believe in a rapture. Yes, I 00:02:09.530 --> 00:02:13.090 did say that out loud. I do not believe in a 00:02:13.090 --> 00:02:16.550 rapture. Now, regardless of what you believe, 00:02:16.550 --> 00:02:18.990 that's not important to me. It's not important 00:02:18.990 --> 00:02:21.349 that you land in the same spot that I do, but 00:02:21.349 --> 00:02:23.669 I think the conversation is valid. I think the 00:02:23.669 --> 00:02:26.219 discussion... is valid and for many different 00:02:26.219 --> 00:02:29.240 reasons that I'll mention later as we continue 00:02:29.240 --> 00:02:32.000 on this journey. But I want to talk about the 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:35.639 fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD because if we miss 00:02:35.639 --> 00:02:38.500 this event, we'll misunderstand a lot of what 00:02:38.500 --> 00:02:41.960 Jesus had to say in Matthew chapter 24, Mark 00:02:41.960 --> 00:02:46.219 chapter 13, Luke chapter 21, and even parts of 00:02:46.219 --> 00:02:49.340 Revelation. But if we allow Holy Spirit to adjust 00:02:49.340 --> 00:02:51.800 our lens, and again this goes with anything in 00:02:51.800 --> 00:02:53.879 our walk with Christ and the things we read in 00:02:53.879 --> 00:02:57.139 the scriptures, if we allow the Holy Spirit to 00:02:57.139 --> 00:03:00.939 adjust our lens and to see correctly, A lot of 00:03:00.939 --> 00:03:04.639 confusing passages begin to make sense. It reminds 00:03:04.639 --> 00:03:06.900 me of the verse that talks about, let he that 00:03:06.900 --> 00:03:10.039 has an ear hear what the spirit is saying. He's 00:03:10.039 --> 00:03:12.439 not talking about physical ears, he's talking 00:03:12.439 --> 00:03:16.139 about spiritual ears in that moment. Because 00:03:16.139 --> 00:03:19.500 you can take a group full of people in one room 00:03:19.500 --> 00:03:22.490 listening to one speaker and they will. each 00:03:22.490 --> 00:03:25.050 hear different things for different purposes 00:03:25.050 --> 00:03:26.949 why because they're all on different journeys 00:03:26.949 --> 00:03:29.430 they're in different stages in life so i think 00:03:29.430 --> 00:03:33.169 it's very important that he let he that has an 00:03:33.169 --> 00:03:36.930 ear hear what the spirit of saying so the destruction 00:03:36.930 --> 00:03:39.990 of jerusalem was the visible collapse of an old 00:03:39.990 --> 00:03:43.610 covenant order centered in the temple the temple 00:03:43.610 --> 00:03:46.370 was the heart of jewish religious life in the 00:03:46.370 --> 00:03:50.469 first century and its destruction in 70 ad changed 00:03:50.469 --> 00:03:55.009 everything Simply put, the cross ended the old 00:03:55.009 --> 00:03:58.349 covenant legally and AD 7 revealed that historically. 00:03:59.310 --> 00:04:03.310 I want you to consider with me the story of Jesus 00:04:03.310 --> 00:04:06.750 flipping the tables in John chapter 2 verses 00:04:06.750 --> 00:04:08.729 13 through 17 and we're going to look at that 00:04:08.729 --> 00:04:13.650 together once I get there. So John chapter 2 00:04:13.650 --> 00:04:19.379 verses 13 through 17 and it says this When the 00:04:19.379 --> 00:04:21.600 time was close for the Jewish Passover to begin 00:04:21.600 --> 00:04:24.600 Jesus walked to Jerusalem as he went into the 00:04:24.600 --> 00:04:27.100 temple courtyard He noticed it was filled with 00:04:27.100 --> 00:04:31.660 merchants selling oxen lambs and doves for exorbitant 00:04:31.660 --> 00:04:34.540 prices while others were overcharging as they 00:04:34.540 --> 00:04:38.300 exchanged currency behind their counters So Jesus 00:04:38.300 --> 00:04:40.819 found them found some cords and made them into 00:04:40.819 --> 00:04:43.680 a whip Then he drove out every one of them and 00:04:43.680 --> 00:04:45.500 their animals from the courtyard of the temple 00:04:45.980 --> 00:04:48.199 and he kicked over their tables filled with money 00:04:48.199 --> 00:04:51.120 scattered it everywhere and he told the merchants 00:04:51.120 --> 00:04:54.160 get these things out of out of here don't you 00:04:54.160 --> 00:04:56.980 dare commercialize my father's house that's when 00:04:56.980 --> 00:04:59.860 his disciples remembered the scripture i am consumed 00:04:59.860 --> 00:05:03.759 with the fiery passion to keep your house pure 00:05:03.759 --> 00:05:06.500 so there's a reason i bring that up because i 00:05:06.500 --> 00:05:09.480 want you to think about i hear this this phrase 00:05:09.819 --> 00:05:12.319 thrown around a lot in the in the church world 00:05:12.319 --> 00:05:15.500 as far as flipping over tables and we use it 00:05:15.500 --> 00:05:21.220 um it's almost more like we use it how can i 00:05:21.220 --> 00:05:29.000 say this um like we use it as an emotional attack 00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:32.600 and jesus was not reacting emotionally here um 00:05:32.600 --> 00:05:35.620 he was performing a prophetic act and he quotes 00:05:35.620 --> 00:05:39.040 Isaiah 56 verse 7 and Jeremiah chapter 7 verse 00:05:39.040 --> 00:05:44.819 11. And now this is important as Jeremiah 7 is 00:05:44.819 --> 00:05:47.819 directly connected to the destruction of the 00:05:47.819 --> 00:05:49.860 first temple. Jesus is saying what happened before 00:05:49.860 --> 00:05:53.540 is about to happen again. So I want to look at 00:05:53.540 --> 00:05:56.379 Mark's version of this. Mark has a different 00:05:56.379 --> 00:06:01.180 viewpoint. So let's look at Mark's version. It's 00:06:01.180 --> 00:06:06.680 in Mark chapter 11. verses 12 through 21. So 00:06:06.680 --> 00:06:08.899 we're gonna read some scripture, that's for sure, 00:06:08.899 --> 00:06:12.180 today. Mark chapter 11, you're like, what does 00:06:12.180 --> 00:06:14.079 this have to do with the temple? I promise you 00:06:14.079 --> 00:06:17.800 I will get there and we'll kind of tie some stuff 00:06:17.800 --> 00:06:21.519 together with my notes and everything else and 00:06:21.519 --> 00:06:24.360 with the help of the Holy Spirit. So Mark chapter 00:06:24.360 --> 00:06:27.410 11. starting in verse 12, the next day as he 00:06:27.410 --> 00:06:30.310 left Bethany, Jesus was feeling hungry. He noticed 00:06:30.310 --> 00:06:32.509 a leafy fig tree in the distance, so he walked 00:06:32.509 --> 00:06:34.730 over to see if there was any fruit on it. But 00:06:34.730 --> 00:06:37.970 there was none, only leaves, for it wasn't yet 00:06:37.970 --> 00:06:41.389 the season for bearing figs. Jesus spoke to the 00:06:41.389 --> 00:06:43.550 fig tree, saying, no one will ever eat fruit 00:06:43.550 --> 00:06:46.250 from you again. And the disciples overheard him. 00:06:46.649 --> 00:06:48.930 When they came into Jerusalem, Jesus went directly 00:06:48.930 --> 00:06:51.290 into the temple area, overturned all the tables 00:06:51.290 --> 00:06:53.230 and benches and the merchants who were doing 00:06:53.230 --> 00:06:56.839 business there. one by one he drove them all 00:06:56.839 --> 00:06:58.639 out of the temple courts and they scattered away 00:06:58.639 --> 00:07:00.639 including the money changers and those selling 00:07:00.639 --> 00:07:03.339 doves and he would not allow them to use the 00:07:03.339 --> 00:07:05.339 temple courts as a thoroughfare for carrying 00:07:05.339 --> 00:07:08.480 their merchandise and their furniture then he 00:07:08.480 --> 00:07:10.639 said then he began to teach the people saying 00:07:10.639 --> 00:07:12.899 does not the scripture say my house will be a 00:07:12.899 --> 00:07:14.959 house of prayer for all the world to share but 00:07:14.959 --> 00:07:19.019 you have made it a hangout of thieves When the 00:07:19.019 --> 00:07:20.720 chief priests and the religious scholars heard 00:07:20.720 --> 00:07:23.120 this, they began to hatch a plot as to how they 00:07:23.120 --> 00:07:25.939 could eliminate Jesus. But they feared him and 00:07:25.939 --> 00:07:28.639 his influence because the entire crowd was totally 00:07:28.639 --> 00:07:31.759 captivated by his teaching. So he and his disciples 00:07:31.759 --> 00:07:34.439 spent the nights outside the city. In the morning, 00:07:34.480 --> 00:07:36.420 they passed by the fig tree that Jesus spoke 00:07:36.420 --> 00:07:38.420 to and it was completely withered up from the 00:07:38.420 --> 00:07:40.980 roots up. And Peter remembered and said, teacher, 00:07:41.019 --> 00:07:43.240 look, that's the fig tree you cursed. It's now 00:07:43.240 --> 00:07:47.829 all shriveled up and dead. So there's a couple 00:07:47.829 --> 00:07:51.189 things I want us to look at. Number one, I think 00:07:51.189 --> 00:07:53.529 it's fascinating that Mark puts these events 00:07:53.529 --> 00:07:56.610 together intentionally. The cursing of the fig 00:07:56.610 --> 00:07:58.649 tree, the cleansing of the temple, and then the 00:07:58.649 --> 00:08:01.689 withering of the fig tree. So the first thing 00:08:01.689 --> 00:08:08.730 I want you to understand is the fig tree would 00:08:08.730 --> 00:08:12.279 be symbolic to Israel's temple system. In the 00:08:12.279 --> 00:08:14.879 Old Testament, the fig tree often symbolized 00:08:14.879 --> 00:08:18.920 Israel and the fruit symbolized covenant faithfulness. 00:08:19.420 --> 00:08:22.420 So there's a couple things on here I want to 00:08:22.420 --> 00:08:28.800 look at. This is Dr. Simmons' notes on verse 00:08:28.800 --> 00:08:31.959 13, where it talks about, he noticed a leafy 00:08:31.959 --> 00:08:33.879 fig tree in the distance, he walked over to it. 00:08:34.269 --> 00:08:36.669 There was no, let's see if there was any fruit 00:08:36.669 --> 00:08:38.929 on it, but there was none. So the fig tree is 00:08:38.929 --> 00:08:41.090 mentioned in Genesis 3 -7 with its lease being 00:08:41.090 --> 00:08:44.230 a covering for fallen Adam and Eve to hide behind. 00:08:44.409 --> 00:08:47.230 It also became a hiding place for Zacchaeus who 00:08:47.230 --> 00:08:50.230 climbed a sycamore fig tree to see Jesus. The 00:08:50.230 --> 00:08:52.830 tree with lease but no fruit can also be a symbol 00:08:52.830 --> 00:08:56.850 of Israel's religious system of that day. Jesus, 00:08:57.289 --> 00:08:59.570 the... Jesus next drives out the money changers 00:08:59.570 --> 00:09:02.129 from the temple who were rotten fruit the first 00:09:02.129 --> 00:09:04.629 fruits of the harvest Jesus was looking for Came 00:09:04.629 --> 00:09:07.009 on the day of Pentecost at the end of the feast 00:09:07.009 --> 00:09:10.370 of first fruits Now I'm also going to go back 00:09:10.370 --> 00:09:13.610 because I believe in John chapter 2 there were 00:09:13.610 --> 00:09:18.110 some notes here For us to look at from dr. Simmons 00:09:18.110 --> 00:09:24.169 that I thought was important To it John chapter 00:09:24.169 --> 00:09:33.990 2 verses 13 through 17 no that is not what I 00:09:33.990 --> 00:09:39.809 was looking for I was hoping to find the information 00:09:39.809 --> 00:09:45.309 about the fig tree and it does not have what 00:09:45.309 --> 00:09:49.230 I was looking for so anyhow we'll come back to 00:09:49.230 --> 00:09:51.710 that if it's important I'll find my notes for 00:09:51.710 --> 00:09:55.789 it otherwise we'll just have to keep moving because 00:09:55.789 --> 00:09:57.509 I don't know where my notes went for that part 00:10:00.940 --> 00:10:03.159 And I'm checking to see if they're on my laptop. 00:10:04.440 --> 00:10:09.259 And they're not, so it's okay. But anyhow, Jesus 00:10:09.259 --> 00:10:12.100 comes to the fig tree and finds leaves, but no 00:10:12.100 --> 00:10:14.559 fruit. Why is this important? Because it meant 00:10:14.559 --> 00:10:19.600 religious activity without covenant life. Then 00:10:19.600 --> 00:10:22.080 Jesus goes and flips tables, stops the sacrifice, 00:10:22.120 --> 00:10:23.779 and declares judgment. And then the fig tree 00:10:23.779 --> 00:10:26.059 withers from its roots, suggesting a total system 00:10:26.059 --> 00:10:28.600 collapse. One of the things I read about this 00:10:28.600 --> 00:10:31.659 was regarding the figs, because it looked like 00:10:31.659 --> 00:10:36.000 it had leaves, that there is a part of the fig 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:38.899 in early state at that point that is still edible. 00:10:39.480 --> 00:10:42.559 But this fig tree had nothing to eat. So it looked 00:10:42.559 --> 00:10:45.759 a part, but there was nothing on it for Jesus 00:10:45.759 --> 00:10:48.840 to eat from. There was no fruit being produced 00:10:48.840 --> 00:10:51.720 off of this tree. So Jesus is using this, and 00:10:51.720 --> 00:10:54.279 I like how Mark put this where he put it. And 00:10:54.279 --> 00:10:57.159 again, I think it was intentional. And Jesus, 00:10:57.279 --> 00:11:01.440 it's showing that Jesus is interrupting the sacrificial 00:11:01.440 --> 00:11:04.440 economy. He's declaring even here that the system 00:11:04.440 --> 00:11:06.720 is coming to an end. Because I want you to think 00:11:06.720 --> 00:11:08.899 about, think about what I just said the fig tree 00:11:08.899 --> 00:11:12.019 represented as far as Israel's temple system. 00:11:12.320 --> 00:11:14.960 It had no fruit on it for Jesus to eat from and 00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:17.159 then he goes into the temple to cleanse the temple. 00:11:17.659 --> 00:11:20.039 And again, a lot of times this gets thrown around 00:11:20.039 --> 00:11:22.639 like we need to flip tables and flip and I don't 00:11:22.639 --> 00:11:26.159 believe. Anywhere that that's what Jesus is trying 00:11:26.159 --> 00:11:28.379 to encourage us to do is go into places and just 00:11:28.379 --> 00:11:32.559 flip tables to flip tables Jesus was doing something 00:11:32.559 --> 00:11:34.480 prophetically here because I want you to think 00:11:34.480 --> 00:11:38.000 about what is happening in this temple What is 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:41.220 being sold and what is being sold in this temple 00:11:41.220 --> 00:11:44.720 is is animals that would be used for sacrifices 00:11:44.720 --> 00:11:49.100 So I want you to think about They back in the 00:11:49.100 --> 00:11:50.500 Old Testament and all that kind of stuff. They 00:11:50.500 --> 00:11:53.860 would have to make sacrifices periodically I'd 00:11:53.860 --> 00:11:55.620 have to go back to read about how often that 00:11:55.620 --> 00:11:58.700 had to be done That number escapes me or how 00:11:58.700 --> 00:12:00.419 often and all I know it's annually, but I want 00:12:00.419 --> 00:12:03.379 to say they could do other stuff More than just 00:12:03.379 --> 00:12:06.120 annually, but the point is this that every time 00:12:06.120 --> 00:12:09.460 you ended a sacrifice You would be constantly 00:12:09.460 --> 00:12:12.320 have to be reminded of your sin to because you 00:12:12.320 --> 00:12:15.200 had to decide for the next sacrifice. You had 00:12:15.200 --> 00:12:17.620 to look forward to the next sacrifice that you 00:12:17.620 --> 00:12:23.460 would be involved in. And so it was nothing but 00:12:23.460 --> 00:12:27.360 being conscious of your sin. And that's never 00:12:27.360 --> 00:12:29.700 what the Father wants. It's not about living 00:12:29.700 --> 00:12:33.080 sin conscience. that will put you on the hamster 00:12:33.080 --> 00:12:37.320 wheel of life and keep you just running and feeling 00:12:37.320 --> 00:12:40.059 the fig tree that you're not producing anything 00:12:40.059 --> 00:12:42.879 why because you're constantly focused on how 00:12:42.879 --> 00:12:45.179 worthless you are how sinful you are how dirty 00:12:45.179 --> 00:12:47.960 you are and that's never what the father wants 00:12:47.960 --> 00:12:50.759 so he's coming to declare And again, that's why 00:12:50.759 --> 00:12:52.940 I think Mark puts it where he puts it at, that 00:12:52.940 --> 00:12:56.360 I'm bringing an end to this sacrificial system. 00:12:56.399 --> 00:13:00.399 It does not have any fruit to bear for me or 00:13:00.399 --> 00:13:05.620 my father any longer. This system is coming to 00:13:05.620 --> 00:13:07.720 an end. So let's understand the temple. That 00:13:07.720 --> 00:13:11.620 in that time, the temple was not just a church. 00:13:12.110 --> 00:13:14.950 uh like a church building it was the center of 00:13:14.950 --> 00:13:18.169 worship it was the center of sacrifice of priesthood 00:13:18.169 --> 00:13:21.590 national identity and covenant life so until 00:13:21.590 --> 00:13:24.649 its destruction the second temple was the most 00:13:24.649 --> 00:13:27.789 important religious institution life because 00:13:27.789 --> 00:13:31.090 here's what happens if the temple falls the sacrificial 00:13:31.090 --> 00:13:34.129 system collapses the priest order is shattered 00:13:34.129 --> 00:13:36.830 and the visible center of the old covenant world 00:13:36.830 --> 00:13:40.559 is gone So when Jesus is prophesying or predicting 00:13:40.559 --> 00:13:43.179 that the temple is going to be under destruction 00:13:43.179 --> 00:13:46.659 He's not merely predicting a damaged architecture. 00:13:46.799 --> 00:13:50.080 He's announcing the collapse of an entire covenant 00:13:50.080 --> 00:13:53.919 order He's announcing a change a changing age. 00:13:53.919 --> 00:13:57.279 Basically you sing out with the old end with 00:13:57.279 --> 00:13:59.259 the new So I want you to think about some of 00:13:59.259 --> 00:14:02.159 this stuff. So let's look at what Jesus actually 00:14:02.159 --> 00:14:06.399 said in Matthew chapter 24 verses 1 & 2 and then 00:14:06.399 --> 00:14:09.450 we'll look at mark chapter 13 verses 1 and 2. 00:14:09.850 --> 00:14:12.529 So Matthew 24 1 through 2 says as Jesus was leaving 00:14:12.529 --> 00:14:15.830 the temple courts his disciples came to him and 00:14:15.830 --> 00:14:18.269 pointed out the beautiful architecture of the 00:14:18.269 --> 00:14:20.509 temple and Jesus turned to them and said take 00:14:20.509 --> 00:14:22.830 a good look at all these things for I'm telling 00:14:22.830 --> 00:14:26.429 you there will not be one stone left upon another 00:14:26.429 --> 00:14:30.190 it will all be level. Dr. Simmons puts down here 00:14:30.190 --> 00:14:33.330 that this prophecy of Jesus was fulfilled by 00:14:33.330 --> 00:14:36.389 the Roman prince Titus who in the Roman war of 00:14:36.389 --> 00:14:41.299 AD 67 to 70 destroyed the temple And in about 00:14:41.299 --> 00:14:44.980 8135, the Emperor Hadrian completely destroyed 00:14:44.980 --> 00:14:47.620 the city of Jerusalem and built a new city on 00:14:47.620 --> 00:14:52.639 its foundation and named it Aelia Capitolinia. 00:14:52.820 --> 00:14:54.860 Now you can pronounce those words how you would 00:14:54.860 --> 00:14:57.820 like. That's just how I am interpreting them. 00:14:58.480 --> 00:15:01.340 and then over in mark chapter 13 it says as jesus 00:15:01.340 --> 00:15:03.679 was leaving the temple courts one of his disciples 00:15:03.679 --> 00:15:06.200 came to him and said teacher look at these magnificent 00:15:06.200 --> 00:15:09.000 buildings and what tremendous stones were used 00:15:09.000 --> 00:15:12.120 to build all of this jesus turned to them and 00:15:12.120 --> 00:15:15.679 said take a good look at all these enormous buildings 00:15:15.679 --> 00:15:18.440 for i'm telling you there will not be one stone 00:15:18.440 --> 00:15:22.639 left upon another it will all be leveled so a 00:15:22.639 --> 00:15:26.169 couple notes here And for verse one it says, 00:15:26.389 --> 00:15:28.669 this is Solomon's temple rebuilt by Herod the 00:15:28.669 --> 00:15:32.330 Great. He began the project in 19 BC prior to 00:15:32.330 --> 00:15:35.009 the birth of Christ using some of the greatest 00:15:35.009 --> 00:15:37.529 marble and gold ornamentation found in the Middle 00:15:37.529 --> 00:15:40.070 East. Some of the stones he used were five meters 00:15:40.070 --> 00:15:42.850 long and over one meter high. Jerusalem 8070 is a temple system that 00:28:49.329 --> 00:28:52.430 rejected the Messiah. Religious structures that 00:28:52.430 --> 00:28:55.849 block access to God. These are the things that 00:28:55.849 --> 00:28:59.490 God is coming to judge. We see that used in Matthew chapter 00:31:48.220 --> 00:31:50.980 24 verse 3. It talks about the end of the age 00:31:50.980 --> 00:31:54.359 and Greek matters here. So world in Greek is 00:31:54.359 --> 00:31:56.720 the word cosmos and it's the ordered system. 00:31:56.839 --> 00:31:59.019 It's not just the planet, but the organized human 00:31:59.019 --> 00:32:01.619 order, cultural, political, religious systems, 00:32:01.740 --> 00:32:04.539 the structured world that we as humanity live 00:32:04.539 --> 00:32:09.369 in. That's a lot in that little word. But then 00:32:09.369 --> 00:32:12.829 we have the Greek word Aeon, and this word gets 00:32:12.829 --> 00:32:15.329 translated into world, but that is a horrible 00:32:15.329 --> 00:32:20.410 translation. The world is an age, an era, a period 00:32:20.410 --> 00:32:24.250 of time characterized by a specific order. Basically, 00:32:24.329 --> 00:32:27.910 this is time period language. So both words, 00:32:28.309 --> 00:32:30.670 cosmos and Aeon, get translated into our English 00:32:30.670 --> 00:32:33.890 word world, and they are two distinct different 00:32:33.890 --> 00:32:36.210 meanings, and it's important to know your definitions. 00:32:36.230 --> 00:32:39.250 It's important to study these things out. that 00:32:39.250 --> 00:32:42.230 it's not the end of the planet, it's the end 00:32:42.230 --> 00:32:45.089 of an old covenant age. And you know, it's things 00:32:45.089 --> 00:32:47.650 that Hebrews, Galatians, Romans all talk about, 00:32:47.789 --> 00:32:50.789 law versus grace, flesh versus spirit, shadow 00:32:50.789 --> 00:32:55.009 versus substance. The year 70 AD was the final 00:32:55.009 --> 00:32:59.789 visible end of that age. So then we have Revelation 00:32:59.789 --> 00:33:02.509 in 70 AD. Think about, we're gonna talk about 00:33:02.509 --> 00:33:04.390 Revelation, why it was written, that kind of 00:33:04.390 --> 00:33:07.279 thing, who it was written to. We'll get into 00:33:07.279 --> 00:33:09.480 that in a couple of things next week or a couple 00:33:09.480 --> 00:33:12.400 weeks. But Revelation was written to first century 00:33:12.400 --> 00:33:15.059 believers. It's written to those who are facing 00:33:15.059 --> 00:33:18.519 persecution, who's under Roman oppression. It's 00:33:18.519 --> 00:33:20.980 written to those before the temple was destroyed. 00:33:21.779 --> 00:33:24.119 Now there are some arguments with that, but that's 00:33:24.119 --> 00:33:27.019 where I hold my argument to. And then you read 00:33:27.019 --> 00:33:31.900 key phrases such as soon, near, at hand. This 00:33:31.900 --> 00:33:35.400 must shortly take place. So Revelation's not 00:33:35.400 --> 00:33:38.289 about a bunch of Apache helicopters and B -2 00:33:38.289 --> 00:33:43.390 bombers or microchips. It's apocalyptic Jewish 00:33:43.390 --> 00:33:49.289 imagery describing covenant judgment, Rome, Jerusalem, 00:33:49.690 --> 00:33:52.910 and vindication of the saints. And we have Revelation 00:33:52.910 --> 00:33:55.150 11 that talks about the temple still standing. 00:33:56.190 --> 00:33:59.450 Jerusalem is called Sodom and Egypt, the city 00:33:59.450 --> 00:34:02.630 where our Lord was crucified. This city was destroyed 00:34:02.630 --> 00:34:08.500 in the year 70 A .D. So why does all this matter 00:34:08.500 --> 00:34:12.239 to wrap some of this stuff up if 70 ad fulfilled 00:34:12.239 --> 00:34:14.460 prophecy then my friend We're not waiting for 00:34:14.460 --> 00:34:16.860 judgment. We're not waiting for the kingdom. 00:34:16.860 --> 00:34:19.480 We're not waiting for Christ to rule We're not 00:34:19.480 --> 00:34:22.579 in danger of missing an escape plan. After the temple fell, forgiveness is 00:34:43.059 --> 00:34:45.679 no longer flowed through sacrifice. Remember 00:34:45.679 --> 00:34:48.739 my friends, Jesus is forgiving people pre -cross. 00:34:50.360 --> 00:34:52.579 Jesus is forgiving people who does not, there's 00:34:52.579 --> 00:34:54.380 no evidence saying they asked for forgiveness, 00:34:54.519 --> 00:34:56.900 were sorry for what they did. But yet Jesus asked the Pharisees, 00:35:05.820 --> 00:35:07.980 the religious leaders, he said, what is easier 00:35:07.980 --> 00:35:11.400 for me to say, rise and walk, or that your sins 00:35:11.400 --> 00:35:13.920 are forgiven? He saw a coming crisis. 00:37:54.530 --> 00:37:57.389 He warned his people. He wept over the city and 00:37:57.389 --> 00:38:00.469 told them what to do. And then guess what? 70 00:38:00.469 --> 00:38:03.510 AD comes around. Jerusalem is surrounded. The 00:38:03.510 --> 00:38:06.369 city failed. The temple is burned. This was not 00:38:06.369 --> 00:38:08.650 failure of his prophecy. It was the fulfillment 00:38:08.650 --> 00:38:13.079 of his prophecy. This teaches us something deeply 00:38:13.079 --> 00:38:16.619 important important that Jesus is trustworthy 00:38:16.619 --> 00:38:19.440 Covenant history matters and the kingdom he brings 00:38:19.440 --> 00:38:22.900 is greater than any religious system that can 00:38:22.900 --> 00:38:28.400 be shaken my friend again, I just submit to you 00:38:28.400 --> 00:38:32.519 a different way to look at this a different viewpoint 00:38:32.519 --> 00:38:38.090 if you will to really think about When we read 00:38:38.090 --> 00:38:40.090 scripture and we put it off somewhere in the 00:38:40.090 --> 00:38:44.130 future know Jesus was talking Specifically to 00:38:44.130 --> 00:38:46.730 a group of people and even said this generation 00:38:46.730 --> 00:38:50.150 won't pass away.
