It says Timothy and I uh send this letter 00:01:49.200 --> 00:01:52.319 to all the holy believers who have been united 00:01:52.319 --> 00:01:56.060 to jesus so i want you to write off the bat i'm 00:01:56.060 --> 00:01:58.659 going to hit it as hard as i can hit it right 00:01:58.659 --> 00:02:03.879 off the bat let's address this issue he said 00:02:03.879 --> 00:02:08.400 i'm writing to the holy believers who have been 00:02:08.400 --> 00:02:12.580 united to jesus as beloved followers i want you 00:02:12.580 --> 00:02:18.539 to begin to ask the question who was not united 00:02:18.539 --> 00:02:22.599 to Jesus. I want you to answer that question. 00:02:23.560 --> 00:02:27.960 Who was not united to Jesus? Then how could it not be true 00:02:56.389 --> 00:03:02.050 that we were also included in what Christ did 00:03:02.050 --> 00:03:05.009 with everything that he did while he lived, going 00:03:05.009 --> 00:03:07.270 through the beatings that he went through, the 00:03:07.270 --> 00:03:10.810 crucifixion, the resurrection, all of this. How 00:03:10.810 --> 00:03:15.919 could all not be included in that? Well Chris 00:03:15.919 --> 00:03:18.479 everybody is included but you have to make a 00:03:18.479 --> 00:03:20.340 decision really because I did not have to make 00:03:20.340 --> 00:03:24.099 a decision to get into Adam. And if I am 00:03:55.419 --> 00:03:59.539 to really believe that on the cross it was the 00:03:59.539 --> 00:04:03.580 Adam nature that was crucified by Jesus, which 00:04:03.580 --> 00:04:07.539 means that Adam was and is still crucified on 00:04:07.539 --> 00:04:14.000 that cross. That man is dead. I honor them. I respect them Again, 00:04:57.600 --> 00:05:00.519 I think all of them did the best they could with 00:05:00.519 --> 00:05:03.240 the knowledge they had Most of them for that 00:05:03.240 --> 00:05:05.519 as far as I know are still doing ministry today. 00:05:05.519 --> 00:05:09.220 I know that they love God. They love people So 00:05:09.220 --> 00:05:12.060 it's not attacking anybody. The Holy Spirit has proven that she will 00:07:33.449 --> 00:07:37.329 be the greatest teacher I have ever had and still 00:07:37.329 --> 00:07:41.569 continues to prove that. So he opens his letter. 00:07:43.129 --> 00:07:45.310 Another translation says to the saints and faithful 00:07:45.310 --> 00:07:48.889 brothers in Christ. So before Paul addresses 00:07:49.259 --> 00:07:52.439 behavior before he addresses theology, correction, 00:07:53.399 --> 00:07:56.699 maturity, or any of this kind of stuff, he establishes 00:07:56.699 --> 00:08:00.839 identity. And that's not accidental. Paul doesn't 00:08:00.839 --> 00:08:05.300 just write to write. This is a foundational moment 00:08:05.300 --> 00:08:10.079 of him trying to reinforce identity. I'm writing 00:08:10.079 --> 00:08:13.000 to the holy believers who have been united to 00:08:13.000 --> 00:08:18.339 Jesus as beloved followers of the Messiah. So 00:08:19.879 --> 00:08:22.980 Let's think about this. What do these words actually 00:08:22.980 --> 00:08:33.879 mean? so The original text says To the saints 00:08:33.879 --> 00:08:36.419 and faithful brothers, so I want to look at those 00:08:36.419 --> 00:08:41.580 words Saints is the word and again. I am NOT 00:08:41.580 --> 00:08:44.980 a Greek scholar I may butcher this word and if 00:08:44.980 --> 00:08:48.929 I did then you can pronounce it as yourself But 00:08:48.929 --> 00:08:53.870 it's Haggios. H -A -G -I -O -S. This word does 00:08:53.870 --> 00:08:58.149 not mean morally perfect. It does not mean spiritually 00:08:58.149 --> 00:09:02.350 elite. It doesn't mean behaviorally flawless. 00:09:03.289 --> 00:09:07.669 No, it means to be set apart, to be marked by 00:09:07.669 --> 00:09:15.610 God, and belonging to God. Okay? Please, let me walk into your 00:09:50.690 --> 00:09:53.330 church and you point to the ones in that church 00:09:53.330 --> 00:09:56.730 building who is not set apart already, who does 00:09:56.730 --> 00:10:01.330 not belong to God. If this is the argument that 00:10:01.330 --> 00:10:04.210 we want to have, then you do the legwork and 00:10:04.210 --> 00:10:07.669 point these individuals out to me of the ones 00:10:07.669 --> 00:10:12.210 who do not belong, who are not set apart. They are 00:15:54.919 --> 00:15:57.299 struggling with immaturity. They are struggling 00:15:57.299 --> 00:16:01.659 with confusion. And yet Paul calls them saints 00:16:01.659 --> 00:16:06.519 and faithful ones. And he doesn't call them this 00:16:06.519 --> 00:16:10.840 after correction. He calls them this before it. 00:16:11.360 --> 00:16:16.439 And why does he do this? Because identity precedes 00:16:16.439 --> 00:16:19.879 transformation. He didn't come and bash them 00:16:19.879 --> 00:16:23.279 for their false teaching, their immaturity, their 00:16:23.279 --> 00:16:24.899 confusion. He didn't come and beat them over 00:16:24.899 --> 00:16:27.039 the head with all this and say, now you better 00:16:27.039 --> 00:16:28.899 change your life now. Repeat this prayer with 00:16:28.899 --> 00:16:30.980 me. And then, now that they repeated the prayer, 00:16:31.320 --> 00:16:34.220 now you are holy and faithful. No, he begins 00:16:34.220 --> 00:16:36.779 his letter by writing and calling them by their 00:16:36.779 --> 00:16:39.679 identity in Christ.
