This 00:00:20.559 --> 00:00:24.239 morning we're going to talk about altars and 00:00:24.239 --> 00:00:28.160 in the Bible altars were very meaningful and 00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:32.770 in the Old Testament. there were different types 00:00:32.770 --> 00:00:37.409 of sacrifices for different times. And we're 00:00:37.409 --> 00:00:39.890 going to start in the Old Testament, we're going 00:00:39.890 --> 00:00:42.009 to really focus on the new because that's where 00:00:42.009 --> 00:00:46.630 we live today. And if we turn back to the book 00:00:46.630 --> 00:00:49.229 of Genesis, the first time we see an altar is 00:00:49.229 --> 00:00:52.869 when Noah built an altar. And he built an altar 00:00:52.869 --> 00:00:56.929 after the flood. when he and his wife and the 00:00:56.929 --> 00:01:00.210 and he has sons and their wives left the boat 00:01:00.210 --> 00:01:05.189 and that starts in Genesis 8 18 and it goes on 00:01:05.189 --> 00:01:07.950 and it says and so Noah his wife his sons and 00:01:07.950 --> 00:01:10.069 their wives left the boat and all of the large 00:01:10.069 --> 00:01:13.150 and small animals and Birds came out of the boat 00:01:13.150 --> 00:01:16.959 pair by pair Then Noah built an altar to the 00:01:16.959 --> 00:01:19.879 Lord and there he sacrificed burnt offerings, 00:01:20.140 --> 00:01:22.060 the animals, the birds that had been approved 00:01:22.060 --> 00:01:24.939 for that purpose. And the Lord was pleased with 00:01:24.939 --> 00:01:27.840 the aroma of the sacrifice and said to himself, 00:01:28.219 --> 00:01:30.599 I will never again curse the ground because of 00:01:30.599 --> 00:01:33.939 the human race. Even everything they think and 00:01:33.939 --> 00:01:36.140 imagine is bent toward evil from childhood. And they were very thankful to be out 00:02:11.569 --> 00:02:13.689 of the boat, you know, because they were tending 00:02:13.689 --> 00:02:17.349 to all those animals all those days. You know, it was like a hundred and 00:02:23.560 --> 00:02:27.860 fifty days And so it was it was a heavy -duty 00:02:27.860 --> 00:02:30.620 time I mean imagine being on Noah's Ark with 00:02:30.620 --> 00:02:33.240 all those animals and you had to tend to them 00:02:33.240 --> 00:02:36.259 and keep them alive and all the things that go 00:02:36.259 --> 00:02:39.819 into that and There actually is a place in Virginia 00:02:39.819 --> 00:02:42.840 called the Ark if you've never visited and they 00:02:42.840 --> 00:02:47.120 made it In as much of the exact likeness as they 00:02:47.120 --> 00:02:50.770 could have just as a side note, but let's continue. 00:02:50.810 --> 00:02:54.530 So this is an opportunity. He created an altar 00:02:54.530 --> 00:02:58.629 and sacrifice animals to give thanks, you know, 00:02:58.669 --> 00:03:03.930 to give thanks. If we go further in Genesis to 00:03:03.930 --> 00:03:08.069 Genesis 12, which is just a few pages over, we're 00:03:08.069 --> 00:03:12.189 going to see another time when there was a sacrifice. 00:03:12.210 --> 00:03:15.569 And this was Abram before his name was called 00:03:15.569 --> 00:03:19.830 Abraham. And it's in chapter 12, verse 6, and 00:03:19.830 --> 00:03:46.780 it says, with Bethel to the west and Ai to the 00:03:46.780 --> 00:03:49.939 east and there he built another altar and dedicated 00:03:49.939 --> 00:03:52.740 to the Lord and he worshiped the Lord and Abraham 00:03:52.740 --> 00:03:56.080 continued to travel south to the stages towards 00:03:56.080 --> 00:03:59.419 Negev. You know, here we see two different times 00:03:59.419 --> 00:04:02.780 and he's stopping, he's deciding to build an 00:04:02.780 --> 00:04:05.900 altar to give thanks and the second altar he 00:04:05.900 --> 00:04:10.479 built was to worship. You know, altars are places 00:04:10.479 --> 00:04:14.900 of humility where we come before God. we lay 00:04:14.900 --> 00:04:19.379 down everything and we give thanks and we worship 00:04:19.379 --> 00:04:23.019 him for who he is. He is the Lord God Almighty. 00:04:23.579 --> 00:04:26.560 You know at the altar in the Old Testament the 00:04:26.560 --> 00:04:29.779 sacrifices were of bulls and goats and animals 00:04:29.779 --> 00:04:32.920 and it was the blood that made an atonement. 00:04:33.310 --> 00:04:35.829 for sin at that time. There was what's called 00:04:35.829 --> 00:04:39.790 the sin offering and so we have to come to an 00:04:39.790 --> 00:04:42.689 altar in our heart and our lives at different 00:04:42.689 --> 00:04:46.670 times. It's a good thing and the altar in the 00:04:46.670 --> 00:04:49.209 New Testament is very different from that of 00:04:49.209 --> 00:04:51.490 the Old Testament but we're going to look at 00:04:51.490 --> 00:04:53.769 one more in the Old Testament and that's in Genesis 00:04:53.769 --> 00:04:58.170 22. Okay this is where Abraham's faith gets tested 00:04:58.170 --> 00:05:02.689 with Isaac. You know God, Abraham was childless 00:05:02.689 --> 00:05:06.750 and when he came to God, he had asked him for 00:05:06.750 --> 00:05:09.269 a child because God said, I'm going to bless 00:05:09.269 --> 00:05:11.810 you with this and bless you with that. And he 00:05:11.810 --> 00:05:14.269 said, how can that be when I go childless? You 00:05:14.269 --> 00:05:17.029 know, he wanted a child, something from his own 00:05:17.029 --> 00:05:19.350 loins, a person from his own loins to be able 00:05:19.350 --> 00:05:21.850 to pass all this down to and his family be blessed. 00:05:22.850 --> 00:05:26.189 And God told him because Sarah was barren. which 00:05:26.189 --> 00:05:29.129 was his wife. So God promised him a son, but 00:05:29.129 --> 00:05:33.230 it didn't come for 25 years later. But what Abraham 00:05:33.230 --> 00:05:38.490 did, he did honor that promise that Sarah brought 00:05:38.490 --> 00:05:42.310 forth the child after a lot of stuff that happened 00:05:42.310 --> 00:05:45.329 in between. But they did have Isaac, and Isaac 00:05:45.329 --> 00:05:49.009 truly came from the loins of Abraham and the 00:05:49.009 --> 00:05:54.189 womb of Sarah. This time came as Isaac was growing, 00:05:54.769 --> 00:06:01.529 the Lord said to Abraham, I want your son. It 00:06:01.529 --> 00:06:05.589 starts in chapter 22. We're going to start in 00:06:05.589 --> 00:06:08.389 verse one. Sometime later God tested Abraham's 00:06:08.389 --> 00:06:11.350 faith. Abraham, God called, yes he replied, here 00:06:11.350 --> 00:06:14.470 am I. Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom 00:06:14.470 --> 00:06:16.870 you love so much and go to the land of Moriah 00:06:16.870 --> 00:06:20.149 and go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering 00:06:20.149 --> 00:06:22.569 on one of the mountains which I will show you. 00:06:22.810 --> 00:06:25.889 The next morning, the next morning, see that 00:06:25.889 --> 00:06:29.129 obedience? Abraham was so quick to obey. The 00:06:29.129 --> 00:06:31.350 next morning, Abraham got up early, saddled the 00:06:31.350 --> 00:06:33.730 donkey, took the two servants with him, along 00:06:33.730 --> 00:06:35.589 with his son Isaac, and then chopped the wood 00:06:35.589 --> 00:06:38.050 for the fire for the burnt offering. So he's 00:06:38.050 --> 00:06:41.529 already trusting God. Even though God said, I 00:06:41.529 --> 00:06:47.009 want to have back what you asked me for, he was 00:06:47.009 --> 00:06:49.790 wondering, was Abraham willing to lay down what 00:06:49.790 --> 00:06:53.920 was most important to him? for God, but Abraham 00:06:53.920 --> 00:06:57.459 knew God so well that he just trusted him. So 00:06:57.459 --> 00:07:01.139 he took, he got the wood, he told the two servants, 00:07:01.379 --> 00:07:03.759 stay here with the donkey, Abraham said, the 00:07:03.759 --> 00:07:05.819 boy and I will travel a little farther, we will 00:07:05.819 --> 00:07:08.379 worship there, and we will come back. That's 00:07:08.379 --> 00:07:10.779 where his faith was. He thought, okay, if God 00:07:10.779 --> 00:07:13.779 wants me to sacrifice Isaac, he's gonna raise 00:07:13.779 --> 00:07:16.980 him from the dead. He just knew God had a plan 00:07:16.980 --> 00:07:19.579 and that's how much we can trust God. I mean 00:07:19.579 --> 00:07:22.319 he was willing to lay down his child. Now in 00:07:22.319 --> 00:07:25.000 this day that would be murder and people would 00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:27.620 think you crazy but back then this is what happened. 00:07:28.100 --> 00:07:30.240 In verse six, so Abraham placed the wood on the 00:07:30.240 --> 00:07:33.620 burnt offering. On Isaac's shoulder while he 00:07:33.620 --> 00:07:35.839 himself carried the fire and the knife and the 00:07:35.839 --> 00:07:37.579 two of them walked together and Isaac turned 00:07:37.579 --> 00:07:40.879 Abraham his father and said father She and Abraham 00:07:40.879 --> 00:07:43.180 replied. Yes, my son. He said we have fire and 00:07:43.180 --> 00:07:45.300 wood the boy said but where's the sheep for the 00:07:45.300 --> 00:07:48.670 burnt offering? And all Abraham said was, God 00:07:48.670 --> 00:07:50.750 will provide his sheep for that burnt offering, 00:07:50.930 --> 00:07:53.629 my son. Abraham answered, and they both walked 00:07:53.629 --> 00:07:55.689 together. When they arrived at that place where 00:07:55.689 --> 00:07:58.310 God had told him, Abraham built an altar, arranged 00:07:58.310 --> 00:08:01.829 the wood, tied his son Isaac, laid him on the 00:08:01.829 --> 00:08:04.970 altar on top of the wood. Abraham picked up the 00:08:04.970 --> 00:08:08.250 knife to kill his son, a sacrifice. And at that 00:08:08.250 --> 00:08:11.730 moment, the angel of the Lord called to him from 00:08:11.730 --> 00:08:14.730 heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham. And Abraham 00:08:14.730 --> 00:08:17.850 said, yes, here am I. And the angel of the Lord 00:08:17.850 --> 00:08:20.310 said, Don't lay a hand on that boy. Don't hurt 00:08:20.310 --> 00:08:23.629 him in any way. For now I know you truly fear 00:08:23.629 --> 00:08:27.769 God. You have not withheld me, even your son, 00:08:27.889 --> 00:08:30.889 your only son. And Abraham looked up and saw 00:08:30.889 --> 00:08:32.870 a ram caught in the thicket, and he took the 00:08:32.870 --> 00:08:35.409 ram, sacrificed it on the burnt offering in place 00:08:35.409 --> 00:08:39.029 of his son. And Abraham named that place Yahweh. 00:08:39.399 --> 00:08:43.019 your eye which means the Lord will provide or 00:08:43.019 --> 00:08:46.919 Jehovah Jireh to this day people still use that 00:08:46.919 --> 00:08:50.320 name and as a proverb on this mountain of the 00:08:50.320 --> 00:08:54.419 Lord it will be provided you know here the Lord 00:08:54.419 --> 00:08:57.179 you know the Lord will never ask you something 00:08:57.179 --> 00:09:01.440 to do for him that he hasn't already provided 00:09:01.440 --> 00:09:05.460 a reward for and because Abraham he wanted to 00:09:05.460 --> 00:09:10.019 test his heart and so He tested that love Abraham 00:09:10.019 --> 00:09:12.980 had for him at an altar. You know, sometimes 00:09:12.980 --> 00:09:16.500 when we come to the altar of God, he will ask 00:09:16.500 --> 00:09:18.159 you for something. There's something in your 00:09:18.159 --> 00:09:20.580 life he wants you to give up. Maybe it's a bad 00:09:20.580 --> 00:09:25.879 habit. Maybe it's lust. Maybe it's fornication. 00:09:26.039 --> 00:09:31.250 Maybe it's pornography. Maybe it's Maybe it's 00:09:31.250 --> 00:09:35.230 over eating, maybe it's who knows, but God will 00:09:35.230 --> 00:09:38.809 sometimes ask us to give up something, but he 00:09:38.809 --> 00:09:41.830 will turn around and bless you with something 00:09:41.830 --> 00:09:47.210 else. He may ask you to give into the work of 00:09:47.210 --> 00:09:49.850 God some large amount of money and you go, wait 00:09:49.850 --> 00:09:55.419 a minute God, and what am I doing? but you can't 00:09:55.419 --> 00:09:58.200 give to God, you can't out give him that he won't 00:09:58.200 --> 00:10:01.840 bless you back just like he did Abraham. He was 00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:07.080 so pleased, he was so pleased that he continues 00:10:07.080 --> 00:10:09.159 in verse 15 and says, the angel of the Lord called 00:10:09.159 --> 00:10:11.279 again to Abraham and said, this is what the Lord 00:10:11.279 --> 00:10:14.440 says, because you've obeyed me and have not withheld 00:10:14.440 --> 00:10:18.360 even your son, your only son, I swear by my own 00:10:18.360 --> 00:10:20.740 name, I will certainly bless you. I will multiply 00:10:20.740 --> 00:10:24.419 your descendants beyond number. Like the stars 00:10:24.419 --> 00:10:27.720 in the sky and the sand and the seashore your 00:10:27.720 --> 00:10:30.879 descendants will conquer the city of your enemies 00:10:30.879 --> 00:10:34.580 Through your descendants all nations of the earth 00:10:34.580 --> 00:10:37.940 will be blessed all because you have obeyed me 00:10:38.279 --> 00:10:43.340 Yes, indeed. The New Testament, because Jesus died 00:11:05.779 --> 00:11:08.740 and rose again, he was the ultimate sacrifice. 00:11:09.139 --> 00:11:13.129 His life on the cross was the ultimate altar 00:11:13.129 --> 00:11:15.970 that there is and he laid down his life. They 00:11:15.970 --> 00:11:19.470 didn't take it. He laid it down. He could have 00:11:19.470 --> 00:11:23.009 called legions of angels to protect him or save 00:11:23.009 --> 00:11:27.529 him but he came to die. He came to be that pure 00:11:27.529 --> 00:11:30.389 lamb so we can have right relationship with God 00:11:30.389 --> 00:11:33.950 and restored to that place with God that Adam 00:11:33.950 --> 00:11:38.370 first had in Genesis before he sinned. But we 00:11:38.370 --> 00:11:42.039 want to look at someone in the Bible that created 00:11:42.039 --> 00:11:45.159 a sacrifice on the cross as well and go to Luke 00:11:45.159 --> 00:11:51.149 23 verse 32. And it says, there were two others, 00:11:51.250 --> 00:11:54.690 both criminals, led out to be executed with Jesus. 00:11:54.830 --> 00:11:56.570 And when they came to a place called the skull, 00:11:56.730 --> 00:11:59.710 they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals 00:11:59.710 --> 00:12:02.289 were also crucified, one on his right and one 00:12:02.289 --> 00:12:05.889 on his left. Jesus said, Father, forgive them, 00:12:05.950 --> 00:12:08.409 for they know not what they do, as the soldiers 00:12:08.409 --> 00:12:11.529 gambled for his clothing, throwing dice. The 00:12:11.529 --> 00:12:15.029 crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. and said, 00:12:15.029 --> 00:12:17.690 he saved others. They said, let him save himself 00:12:17.690 --> 00:12:20.509 if he's really God, the Messiah, the chosen one. 00:12:20.970 --> 00:12:23.750 The soldiers mocked him by offering him a drink 00:12:23.750 --> 00:12:25.909 of sour wine. We deserve to die in our crimes, but 00:12:56.059 --> 00:12:59.100 this man's done nothing wrong. And then he turned 00:12:59.100 --> 00:13:03.190 to Jesus and he said, Lord, remember me when 00:13:03.190 --> 00:13:06.730 you come into your kingdom." And Jesus replied, 00:13:06.830 --> 00:13:10.889 I assure you today, you will be with me in paradise. 00:13:11.230 --> 00:13:14.470 Wow. In the last moments of this man's death, 00:13:14.490 --> 00:13:18.830 he made an altar on the cross. He's being sacrificed. 00:13:19.350 --> 00:13:22.990 And here he is crucified on that cross. And then he said, and we have to acknowledge 00:13:32.149 --> 00:13:36.429 Jesus as Lord and ask him and he asked him and 00:13:36.429 --> 00:13:38.389 Jesus replied he didn't have his eyes shut he 00:13:38.389 --> 00:13:40.850 wasn't in a church guess what you can make an 00:13:40.850 --> 00:13:45.549 altar anywhere with God you can come to him at 00:13:45.549 --> 00:13:48.549 any time in your car you can stop in a parking 00:13:48.549 --> 00:13:52.370 lot bow your head and say Lord I humbly come 00:13:52.370 --> 00:13:56.029 before you You can pour out your heart to him 00:13:56.029 --> 00:13:58.830 an altar is also a place you come broken You 00:13:58.830 --> 00:14:01.649 bring those broken pieces and the Bible says 00:14:01.649 --> 00:14:04.830 he will give you beauty for ashes He will give 00:14:04.830 --> 00:14:08.230 your you will give him your sin because he took 00:14:08.230 --> 00:14:11.450 it on the cross anyway And if you repent and 00:14:11.450 --> 00:14:14.169 acknowledge him as Lord He's not only gonna clean 00:14:14.169 --> 00:14:16.429 you wider than snow the Bible says you're gonna 00:14:16.429 --> 00:14:19.610 be redeemed Those sins aren't gonna be covered 00:14:19.610 --> 00:14:21.929 by the blood of bulls and goats like the Old 00:14:21.929 --> 00:14:24.820 Testament. They're gonna be washed away, you 00:14:24.820 --> 00:14:29.279 set free. There is no waste at the altar, no 00:14:29.279 --> 00:14:32.059 waste, but to come to the altar you have to humble 00:14:32.059 --> 00:14:35.419 yourself. You have to be honest with yourself 00:14:35.419 --> 00:14:37.799 and God. You have to have a heart of surrender 00:14:37.799 --> 00:14:41.179 and give it all to him. You know when we go to 00:14:41.179 --> 00:14:44.659 Romans, we're going to go to Romans chapter 12 00:14:44.659 --> 00:14:50.429 and God tells us exactly He says, and dear brothers 00:14:50.429 --> 00:14:52.690 and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies 00:14:52.690 --> 00:14:58.960 to God as a living sacrifice. Let them be a living 00:14:58.960 --> 00:15:01.639 and holy sacrifice, the kind you will find acceptable. 00:15:01.759 --> 00:15:05.059 This is the truly way to worship Him. Don't copy 00:15:05.059 --> 00:15:07.419 the behavior and customs of the world, but let 00:15:07.419 --> 00:15:11.360 God transform you into a new person by changing 00:15:11.360 --> 00:15:14.200 the way you think. Just 00:15:33.120 --> 00:15:35.700 as our bodies have many parts, and each part 00:15:35.700 --> 00:15:39.019 has a special function, so it is with Christ's 00:15:39.019 --> 00:15:41.879 body. We are many parts of one body, but we all 00:15:41.879 --> 00:15:45.320 belong to each other. In His grace, God has given 00:15:45.320 --> 00:15:48.559 us different giftings for doing certain things 00:15:48.559 --> 00:15:51.240 well.
