About keeping your word when it counts. In a world full of shortcuts and excuses, this movie shows what it means to follow through when no one's forcing you to.

Set during the Vietnam War and based on a real mission. This film follows a ragtag group of soldiers who accidentally caused the death of a village's sacred elephant. To make it right, they promise to replace it. Their mission. Get a new elephant into the village. Deep in the jungle. Simple enough, right? Well, not quite.

Danny Glover plays the warm and grounded Captain Cahill. Ray Liotta, may he rest in peace is the rule following Captain Doyle. We have Doug E. Doug who brings great comic timing as private Ashford while Corin Nemec plays the younger, more idealistic private Farley. A local boy named Linh joins them as well, who's played by Dinh Thien Le. And he's the only one who really knows how to handle the elephant.

That elephant Bo Tat is played by a real life Asian elephant named Tai. And she's the heart of the film. Despite their differences, this team bands together to do something that sounds absurd on paper, but because of their bond with the village and their promise to Linh, it matters.

This is what I call a Pause and Preview movie. I recommend this film for ages eight and up, especially your tweens and teens. There's plenty of action and laughs, but also heart and strong life lessons that are easy to miss in today's fast paced media.

Let's talk themes. Teamwork. For starters, these characters disagree and argue. But they learn to move forward together. Conflict isn't avoided. It's worked through and it's done without cruelty. That is a powerful thing for kids to see today. There's also trust. The boy Linh doesn't trust the soldiers at first. We learn he's an orphan. His parents killed in the war, and that tension simmers beneath the surface. But over time, trust builds. And Danny Glover's character becomes a father figure, and that bond becomes the emotional core of the movie.

And then there's a Bo Tat. Tai, the elephant brings real personality to the screen without CGI. You can tell she had a bond with the cast, especially with Linh. In real life, Dinh Thien Le spent weeks bonding with Tai before filming, and their connection really shines through.

If you're curious about the filming, check out the behind the scenes feature on the DVD called "Have Trunk Will Travel". And I haven't found it streaming anywhere, so if you can grab a copy, it's worth it. The production is no small feat. I mean, Disney shot in Thailand and made it look like Vietnam. The logistics of housing feeding and transporting a live elephant were intense, but it worked. And that realness shows.

And although the parachuting elephant premise sounds goofy, the film is grounded in themes of kindness, service and keeping your word. There's even a little karmic twist. At one point, the characters help a group of people purely out of goodness, and that act of kindness circles back to them when they need it the most.

Now if you happen to check IMDB, you'll see it has a 5.2 rating. Some say it doesn't belong in Vietnam or that it's too silly, but let's be honest, it's a 1995 Disney film for families. It's not "Platoon", or "Full Metal Jacket", and it's not trying to be. It's trying to entertain kids while offering something a little deeper for the parents watching as well.

A few commentators even said things like, don't listen to the critics. Critics are critics. If they think it's so bad, let them make something better. And you know what? I agree. One person called it a staggering work of genius. And honestly, I'm not gonna argue with that. There are even some folks who confuse this film with another film called Larger Than Life, starring Bill Murray. Totally different movie. Bill Murray is not in this film.

But those of us like me who grew up on Operation Dumbo Drop, remember it fondly. I had it on VHS and watched it until my VCR chewed up the tape. And I've seen plenty of parents online say they're now watching it with their own kids. So don't let the critics or a low rating stop you from watching this film. Watch it with your family. Let it spark some laughter and maybe a conversation about trust, integrity, or doing the right thing.
