Sometimes I do research and 00:06:44.240 --> 00:06:46.620 it excites me, sometimes I do research and it 00:06:46.620 --> 00:06:48.560 depresses me, and this was one of those depressing 00:06:48.560 --> 00:06:51.980 times. Generations ago, the night sky was a familiar 00:06:51.980 --> 00:06:54.939 companion that helped people navigate, mark the 00:06:54.939 --> 00:06:58.439 seasons, and inspired countless stories and scientific 00:06:58.439 --> 00:07:03.480 discoveries. Today, for most people, only a handful 00:07:03.480 --> 00:07:06.060 of the brightest stars remain visible from home. 00:07:07.100 --> 00:07:08.939 Yellowstone offers a chance to reconnect with 00:07:08.939 --> 00:07:12.519 that forgotten sky. Few things are more 00:13:02.379 --> 00:13:05.460 frustrating when visiting the park than just 00:13:05.460 --> 00:13:08.679 missing a geyser erupt or waiting around and 00:13:08.679 --> 00:13:10.519 saying I'm gonna leave and then you hear you 00:13:10.519 --> 00:13:13.000 just missed the geyser erupt. It happens all 00:13:13.000 --> 00:13:15.490 the time. You wait for a while, decide it's probably 00:13:15.490 --> 00:13:17.769 not going to happen, and continue down a trail, 00:13:17.850 --> 00:13:20.110 only to hear people maybe cheering behind you, 00:13:20.490 --> 00:13:22.450 or have people that are fast hikers catch up 00:13:22.450 --> 00:13:25.350 and say, oh, you just missed it. It's really 00:13:25.350 --> 00:13:27.269 hard to deal with. I've done it a few times, 00:13:27.370 --> 00:13:30.549 but I've kind of learned a way to not have that 00:13:30.549 --> 00:13:34.029 happen. The good news here is that you don't 00:13:34.029 --> 00:13:36.610 have to rely on luck for geyser eruptions, at 00:13:36.610 --> 00:13:39.049 least not for all of them. Yellowstone offers 00:13:39.049 --> 00:13:41.090 eruption predictions for several of its most 00:13:41.090 --> 00:13:43.629 famous geysers making it much easier to plan 00:13:43.629 --> 00:13:46.070 your day and spend more time watching geysers 00:13:46.070 --> 00:13:48.490 erupt instead of waiting around hoping you'll 00:13:48.490 --> 00:13:51.529 be in the right place at the right time. Most 00:13:51.529 --> 00:13:54.830 people know that Old Faithful is one of those 00:13:54.830 --> 00:13:57.669 very predictable geysers and it has eruption 00:13:57.669 --> 00:14:00.490 times listed all over the Old Faithful complex 00:14:00.490 --> 00:14:02.549 and you can kind of look at signs say oh this 00:14:02.549 --> 00:14:04.210 is when it's gonna erupt and time your day around 00:14:04.210 --> 00:14:07.070 it. National Park Service also provides predictions 00:14:07.070 --> 00:14:09.730 for several other popular geysers, including 00:14:09.730 --> 00:14:13.409 Grand, Castle, Daisy, Riverside, and Great Fountain. 00:14:14.309 --> 00:14:16.549 These forecasts are created using observations 00:14:16.549 --> 00:14:18.950 collected by park rangers and trained naturalists 00:14:18.950 --> 00:14:21.929 who monitor eruption intervals and compare them 00:14:21.929 --> 00:14:25.230 with a geyser's well -documented behavior. Now Pine Creek Lake is 00:34:47.409 --> 00:34:50.050 not going to be empty. It's not going to be you're 00:34:50.050 --> 00:34:52.869 the only person there. It's a popular backpacking 00:34:52.869 --> 00:34:55.269 destination and it's a popular hiking destination. 00:34:55.389 --> 00:34:58.449 I did it a little over a week ago and on the 00:34:58.449 --> 00:35:00.969 way up I saw two people and I passed them as 00:35:00.969 --> 00:35:03.949 they were coming down and then I had the entire 00:35:03.949 --> 00:35:06.949 lake to myself for about an hour and a couple 00:35:06.949 --> 00:35:09.730 groups of people started coming up and as I hiked 00:35:09.730 --> 00:35:12.780 down the trail I hiked down the trail from the 00:35:12.780 --> 00:35:15.880 lake to the popular waterfall and I passed 16 00:35:15.880 --> 00:35:20.119 people. From the waterfall back to my car, I 00:35:20.119 --> 00:35:24.940 passed 40 people. Pine Creek Falls is one of 00:35:24.940 --> 00:35:27.760 the most popular hikes in Paradise Valley, the 00:35:27.760 --> 00:35:30.840 region between Livingston and Gardner, Montana. 00:35:31.199 --> 00:35:34.739 Very short, about two miles round trip, five, 00:35:34.840 --> 00:35:36.780 six hundred feet of elevation gain to a little 00:35:36.780 --> 00:35:41.000 waterfall that's really pretty. Almost immediately, 00:35:59.019 --> 00:36:00.639 you're gonna understand why this is one of the 00:36:00.639 --> 00:36:03.420 park's most loved trails. The path follows Pine 00:36:03.420 --> 00:36:05.539 Creek through a shady forest filled with Douglas 00:36:05.539 --> 00:36:08.059 fir and lodgepole pine, while the sound of rushing 00:36:08.059 --> 00:36:11.579 water echoes through the canyon. Before long, 00:36:12.199 --> 00:36:13.800 you arrive at Pine Creek Falls. Like I said, 00:36:13.860 --> 00:36:16.940 it's about 1 .2 miles. It's a beautiful Cascade 00:36:16.940 --> 00:36:19.159 Falls that drops more than 100 feet into narrow 00:36:19.159 --> 00:36:22.119 gorge. You can get out into the water. It's a 00:36:22.119 --> 00:36:25.519 cool, shady place. It's great on a hot day. This 00:36:25.519 --> 00:36:27.579 first section, like I said, is one of the busiest 00:36:27.579 --> 00:36:30.820 hikes in the region, and for good reason. It's 00:36:30.820 --> 00:36:33.679 short, family -friendly, and rewards hikers with 00:36:33.679 --> 00:36:36.510 a very impressive waterfall. Most people will 00:36:36.510 --> 00:36:38.670 turn around at this falls, like I said, and there's 00:36:38.670 --> 00:36:40.170 nothing wrong with that. You want a waterfall 00:36:40.170 --> 00:36:44.030 trail? Sure, do this one. However, those willing 00:36:44.030 --> 00:36:46.429 to continue will discover why Pine Creek Lake 00:36:46.429 --> 00:36:49.369 has become one of the premier alpine destinations 00:36:49.369 --> 00:36:52.550 in the AV wilderness. Beyond the falls, the trail 00:36:52.550 --> 00:36:54.829 becomes noticeably steeper as it climbs through 00:36:54.829 --> 00:36:58.980 thick forest alongside Pine Creek. Several smaller 00:36:58.980 --> 00:37:01.500 waterfalls tumble through the canyon, and frequent 00:37:01.500 --> 00:37:03.800 openings in the trees reveal increasingly dramatic 00:37:03.800 --> 00:37:06.840 views and surrounding cliffs.
