No One Greater to Swear By, But By Himself 
A Sermon By Elise Beatrice - Thursday, 19 June 2025


Holy Father, thank You so much, God, for my people here, for Your people, for Your church members, thank You for everything, thank You for everyone, thank You for You, for Your Kingdom, for Your Son Jesus, for Your Holy Spirit.  
It was Your will to fill up the earth with humans. And we owe it to You; we thank You, for You always do what is best. We love You, God, for You remain beautiful forever, You remain perfect forever, You remain sinless forever, You remain the Good One forever, and You remain loving and caring and merciful and generous and gracious with marvellous kindness, Lord. You are amazing. You are Holy Forever. You are God forever, and You have no equal, and that is perfect, Lord. We love You. 
So, Lord Jesus, thank You for letting Your Holy Spirit guide us and bring us this truth of today, and help us to understand these words and show Your beauty, my Lord, so that Your beauty that has not been obvious to many so far will begin to be obvious to them. They will begin to see You and Your beauty in all places, because, indeed, Your beauty fills up the earth, Lord. Thank You. We love You and we bless You. 
Thank You for hearing my prayer, in Your Holy Name, Lord Jesus, I pray. Amen. 

Hebrews 6:13-20

“13 For example, there was God’s promise to Abraham. Since there was no one greater to swear by, God took an oath in His own name, saying: 14 “I will certainly bless you, and I will multiply your descendants beyond number.” 14 Then Abraham waited patiently, and he received what God had promised. 15 Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question, that oath is binding. 16 God also bound Himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could perfectly be sure that He would never change His mind. 18 So God has given both His promise and His oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. 19 This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. 20 Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek,” (Hebrews 6:13-20) 

This is beautiful, and this is true. It is impossible for God to lie. 
We can be going through tough times, tough situations above ourselves, and a human may even tell us something, it may comfort us, if it is a beautiful thing. But in the back of our minds, it still stands that we don’t have a clue what the future will bring. So we can take a word of comfort from a human being in that moment because they may be saying something to us that is fitting in our situation. But still, we have to trust by faith that those things will happen someday. But when a promise is indeed the Promise from the Lord, it is the best soothing and the most efficient medicine I have experienced, and I’m sure you have experienced it. 
It is impossible for the Lord to lie; everything He says is the truth. His faithfulness. When we read His words in the Bible, every word that came from His mouth is the truth. Every word He has used His servants, through the help of His Holy Spirit, to speak the truth is the truth, and the truth will never change. The truth will always be the truth. The Truth is what sets us free from all lies. The Truth is what deletes the lie. The lie is what brings us down and shows us no future. But the Truth is what brings us up and shows us a bright future, a beautiful future, an eternal future, full of only goodness, for the One who is in it is the One who lives forever. 
So now, we’ve seen this, the experience we’re going through today with our loved ones, even our children, our vulnerable children. Life is not easy for them, especially when they’re going through their teenage years. They struggle with confusion, and the enemy wants to distort their minds, but the Lord steps in and says just a few words, and the fear vanishes. The Lord who sees, who knows the future, says something about you and your children, and straight away, you say, “Yes, we may be going through struggle now, but it will ease, it will finish, and we will triumph in the Lord, given that we trust Him, given that we remain faithful to His teachings, given that we treasure His faithfulness, and understand that the faithfulness of the Lord is our great joy. And nothing compares to the Joy of the Lord, and the promise of the Lord is our security, for the Lord always does what He says; it is impossible for God to lie. 
He gave a promise to Abraham. The Lord won’t give any promise if He sees that it is something He will not do because of someone’s sins in the way. Before the Lord brings Himself to say something, He has already seen the ending. And when a calling is truly from Him, we’re surely going to get there, given that we are listening to Him. And the Lord sees those things beforehand, before even revealing that calling to us. So when He was promising Abraham, Abraham had to do his part by trusting what God said to Him and being blameless before the Lord. 

When God promises something, He counts on Himself to make it happen, or He won’t promise at all.
  
That was a conversation between him alone and the Lord,
“I will certainly bless you, and I will multiply your descendants beyond number.” 
We all know our forefather, Abraham, today, and we have read his story, true stories and experiences. Didn’t the Lord do everything He promised to do with Abraham? Didn’t He give him multiple descendants, and they are countless? Among them, didn’t He even bring us the King, the King of kings, the Lord of lords? And the greatest Promise He made through Abraham is the Lord Jesus Christ, Whom He said, “Through you, Abraham, the whole world will be blessed." Because Christ, dying for everyone, is that blessing for the whole world, given that each person welcomes that greatest blessing of all. So the Lord God is a God we can trust, and His son Jesus, about whom He says to us, “Listen to My Son.” He is our only Saviour, the One we can trust. 

We swear when we go to the courtroom by the Holy Bible to speak the truth and nothing but the truth. We swear to speak the truth by the Bible with the words of the One who is the Truth - the Lord Jesus, the Way, the Truth and the Life - Everything was created through Him, and He came as the Word of God to speak the words of God. And now, billions of people in a courtroom swear by the Bible to speak the truth and nothing but the truth. That is an Oath, an oath to speak the truth, an oath to remain faithful. Someone who’s in the military made an oath to stay faithful to their country. 

If people have the fear of the Lord, and they say, “Okay, I promise to speak the truth, for I have the fear of the Lord, and I can put my hand on this Holy Bible to say I will speak the truth.” If those who are doing this have the fear of the Lord, they will indeed stick to that truth, because they have the fear of the Lord. But the only wrong thing in it is that many swear by it, and then they lie. Many people in court swear to speak the truth, and they put their hands on the Bible, but they lie. But this is just to illustrate in this situation that, while humans tend to swear by other things - which are not authorised because some people even swear by the heads of their children, which is totally wrong, - But however, by putting our hand on the Holy Bible and say, “I will speak the truth,” that is to say, “Yes, the One, who is the Truth is my witness that I will speak the truth today.” And given that we are truly respecting what we’re saying and we are a people of our own word, like God is the God of His Word, and He speaks His Word, His Word does not return void. 
Yes, the Bible says, “Don’t swear by anything on this earth, let your ‘yes’ be ‘yes’ and your ‘no’ be ‘no.’” But since in a courtroom, people have been using the Bible, if people were indeed genuine and putting their hands on the Bible and saying, “I promise to speak the truth according to the words of God, or according to the Lord Jesus Christ,” God would not mind. 

Swearing on the Bible is like saying, “The Lord is my witness. “In the past, many were saying, 'As long as the Lord lives.' The Lord is my witness. Even nowadays, I said a few times when people falsely accused me, “The Lord is my witness.” If you are speaking the truth, He’s indeed Your witness, and if you are lying, He’s still seeing that you are lying and that will return upon yourself. 
If somebody is saying, “I promise to speak the truth, for the Lord is my witness.” There’s nothing wrong about that, really; God doesn’t mind that, as long as you really have the fear of the Lord and you are respecting what you say. Don’t just hide behind the Bible. I’ve seen many people come and use the name of God to crook, but they are not really honest. 

“The Lord is my witness.” If you put your hand on His Holy Bible and say, “The Lord is my witness, I will speak the truth,” there is nothing wrong about that if you are telling the truth. But if somebody, for example, swears by the head of their children, like many do, and something happens to those children, then you’re responsible for killing your children because you lied. Even if you’re speaking the truth, you have no right to swear by the head of your children, because you did not create them, they don’t belong to you, I mean, they are your children, yes, but they belong to God, given that you have brought those children up to remain the children of God, and God created them just like He created you, too. 
Yes, we have to be careful what we swear by. 

But suppose people swear in the courtroom to tell the truth and nothing but the truth, putting their hand on the Holy Bible. In that case, they are inviting God, the Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ, whose Holy Bible they swear by, to be their witness. Suppose they are indeed innocent and not guilty. In that case, the Lord will avenge those who are falsely accused, even if they might have been sent to prison due to injustice. However, if they swear to tell the truth by the Holy Bible, which contains the words of God, and then tell lies in front of the juries, human judges, and the head of all judges, who is the Lord Jesus Christ, those same words of the Lord they swore by will condemn them, even if they might have gotten away on this earth by lying. 
 
So that is the power behind an oath. In every situation, there is good and evil. There are good oaths, like swearing by the Holy Bible to promise to speak the truth, and every oath the Lord Himself makes. The one who swears by the Bible in court to tell the truth and nothing but the truth must acknowledge that the Bible is real, containing the truth; the words of God. You put your hand there, and then lie? That is the problem because there are many out there, even among the believers, who believe in God, but they have no fear of God. And when they have no fear of God, they are not afraid to lie, not to mention the idolaters, and those on this earth who are disbelievers. 

Those who have no fear of God are not afraid to lie. 
   
But God is showing us here that while humans can only swear by other things, He is the Only One who swears by Himself. 

Hebrews 6:14 reads,
“For Example, there was God’s promise to Abraham. Since there was no one greater to swear by, God took an oath in His own name, saying: 14 “I will certainly bless you, and I will multiply your descendants beyond number.”

So, what humans swear by, they’re considering that thing greater, and since there was nothing and no one greater in the heavens and the Earth than God Himself, He had to make an oath by His own Name. 

So yes, in Genesis 22:16, the Lord says, “I swear by my own Name I will certainly bless you.” And in Isaiah 45:22-24, He said, “22 Let all the world look to Me for salvation! For I am God; there is no other. 23 By Myself I have sworn; from my Mouth has gone out in righteousness a Word that shall not return: Every knee will bend to Me, and every tongue will declare allegiance to Me.” 24 The people will declare, “The Lord is the source of all my righteousness and strength.” And all who were angry with Him will come to Him and be ashamed.”

This is the Lord here. These words are spoken by God and His prophet, and this will be so. 
When God swears by Himself, that is the promise that is unbreakable. God does not break His own promise. So when He’s saying beautiful comforting words to us, that is the truth. When He gives us Hope like Christ, we must trust Him and put our hope in Him. No matter how tough things get, we should fix our eyes on Him, trusting that what God the Father has spoken, even before the world began, will come to pass. And the Lord Jesus is on His way. Yes. 
The Lord is not like a human being who says things, hoping that they will come true tomorrow. So we should trust the Holy Bible. We should trust what He has said. We should trust our Lord, who defeats the kingdom of darkness. 
The devil is a liar, the father of lies, and the devil can corrupt people to lie and even trick people to serve him without knowing. And often, even genuine people end up lying. The devil who brings the lie on this earth cannot trick God; he cannot corrupt God; he just cannot; he cannot deceive God; he cannot fool the Lord. So, we have the truth, and we can trust that truth. We can trust God above all. We can trust Him, and we can rely on Him; we can depend on Him. And if we truly do that, the devil will have no hold on you. No devil will get hold of you when you put your hope and your trust in the Lord and when you listen to the Lord because you know that those words spoken by the Lord are the truth. That truth sets us free from all lies. Yes, we are not alone; we are blessed to have the Lord. He is the greatest blessing that Father God spoke about through Abraham, the One God promised would bless the whole world. We who have accepted the Lord Jesus are blessed. Those who listen to Him are blessed. Let’s not depart from that truth. Let’s not stop listening to that truth. Let’s not stop holding on tight to the truth, and that truth will take us forward and lead us to where, from the moment we were old enough to know right from wrong, we set out on a journey to Heaven. And we must remain on that journey, we must remain in the way to Heaven, remain in His love, and we are safe forever. 
So, thank You, Lord Jesus, for this truth. 

18 These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie.

19 This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. 

20 Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.”

Ohhh, thank You, Lord Jesus, our High Priest. 
We love You, Lord. Thank You so much, God, for these teachings. 
Thank You for this great Hope, Lord, which is You. Thank You for You. Thank You, for Your Father, for Your Holy Spirit. 
Thank You for Your comfort, my Lord. Thank You for loving Your people and for loving Your creation. Thank You, Lord, for Your greatness, Your faithfulness and Your Promise. Thank You, Lord, that You can make an oath by Your Name, because there is nothing greater. For Your Name is the Name that is above all names. And You are above all, and You have no equal. So thank You, Father God Almighty, for Your promise that You always keep. Thank You for being beautiful, for being perfect, for being Holy and sinless forever, for being good forever, for being loving and caring, merciful, and compassionate forever. 
Thank You for hearing our prayers, and for the perfect Hope, Your Son Jesus. In the Name of Your Son Jesus. Amen.
