Is It Sinful To Ask A Question? Who Are You Talking To?
A Sermon By Elise Beatrice - Monday 16, June 2025


Holy Father, please fill my heart with Your joy, and Your peace, and Your love and confidence, Lord, to speak this as You want me to speak. 
Please deliver us from evil, deliver us from distraction, deliver us from hindrance, in Jesus' name. Thank You, Father, thank You, Lord Jesus, thank You, Holy Spirit. Holy Father, thank You for hearing my prayer and for guiding me through this, for the sake of Your glorious name. In the name of Your Son, Jesus, I pray. Amen. 

Someone asked me, "Is it sinful to ask a question?"
And this morning the Lord put these three things in my heart. The Lord directed me to answer that question in three ways: 

It is not sinful to ask a question. The act of asking a question is not sinful, but the type of question you ask and the path it leads you to can be sinful, if heading in the opposite direction to God. 

So, in three ways we must see here. 

The first one is: 

Suppose you ask a question,
What can I do to become a child of God?

There is nothing wrong about asking that question. 
Suppose this person is genuine about this question; that means they want to be a child of God. They desire to be a child of God, and they are now seeking to be a child of God by asking this question.   
Of course, asking a question like that, and God sees that they are genuine, the Lord Himself will be the One to guide this person into becoming a child of God. This one question opens a conversation between two people. As humans, we are asking questions, not knowing necessarily who we're asking to. Someone can be asking a question in their mind. Who exactly are you asking that question to? This is always the question we have to ask ourselves. If somebody is asking this question - it could be any other question, I'm just addressing the three questions, as a Christian, it feels right to ask -  But when this person is asking, "What can I do to become a child of God?" It could be that this person is asking this question to a human in front of them, or is asking this question online, to themselves, or it could be that they're indeed just asking this question in prayer.  Whose child do they want to become? Of God. 
Given that this person is really genuine, and that is their desire to be a child of God, every answer to that question will lead to another. And the One who will answer that question and bring them on the journey of being a child of God will be from God Himself, given that the one who asked the question did not ask it to a false teacher or a hater of God.  
Who else is going to bring us to be a child of God? God Himself. Or His faithful devoted servants here on earth. Or even the angel of the Lord, whom, according to the Scriptures, we understand that every person has an angel of God assigned to look after them. Or the words of God in the Holy Bible. Out of all these four ways, and more, if the one asking the question, with a desire to be a child of God, is eager to listen to the Lord Jesus Christ, whoever the Lord sends to tend them will indeed help them become that child of God. However, if they don't listen, being a child of God won't happen. 
And we also have the Holy Spirit of God in us. But the person who is asking this question might not necessarily have God's Holy Spirit, but they want to be a child of God. And because they're asking a question that is putting God at the centre as the One they are seeking, every question that they ask will open a door to a conversation with God, either with God directly in His many different ways or using His devoted servants to guide this person who wants to become His child. Or it will be Christ Himself, using His many ways to speak to you, even the Scriptures. So, this person asking this question is definitely on the right path. They're asking a question, the answers to which will open the door to many questions that will lead them towards God. So, they are not going in the opposite direction. So, yes. 
However, asking this question, there will be lots of obstacles, preventing this person from truly becoming that child of God. Nothing that is good comes so easily. Sometimes, the answer that is given to them might not even be from God, if that question will take them away or lead them astray. But because their aim is to be a child of God, even if they encounter obstacles in the way, it is still true that God can see their heart and knows that this person desires to know Him. And for this, God will not abandon that person who is asking how to become a child of God. Whoever God uses to bring this person to Himself will be because of that desire of that person who wanted to become a child of God. 

The second question is this:
"I'm fascinated by planets. I'm feeling this calling to design a planet. Where do I start?" 

He says, "I'm feeling this calling..." Hearing this, the first question that comes is: You're feeling a calling? A calling from whom? The answer will either be, "From God," or "From myself."

When you feel a calling to do something, whoever has put that desire in your heart will be the one leading you on that journey. If that desire came from God, He will lead you. However, if you believe that the desire originated from within yourself, I must remind you that a desire does not just come from humans without the intervention of a spiritual being. If that desire of your heart is good and is God's will, it came from God. But if it is wrong, selfish, and not God's will for you, it came from the evil one, intending to keep you far away from God.  

If you are a Christian, asking this question, you will need to know where your calling is coming from. Is it a calling from God or from satan?

So, we always have to ask ourselves a question, 'Who is driving us to do this? Who is bringing that desire in our hearts?' By asking this question, it helps us to know who is there. 
If the one asking this question is a Christian, they will say that their calling is from God, even though it is not always from God, even when we're Christians. However, those who are not Christians will not say, "From satan," because they don't know. But they will say, "From myself."  Even though the Lord has often used non-Christians for His righteous purpose, many people are receiving a call from satan daily, and don't even know it, which is why many serve satan without realising it.

A question is never a sin, but only the path your question leads you to, if in the opposite direction to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Whenever we are asking a question, we're calling upon what exists around us to answer us. 
Imagine this is a room of people sitting down with their desks in front of telephones to receive calls from the outside. So, suppose among those people, there are ten Christians; ten people are from God, and another ten are from the world. Those ten people who are from God, when people are calling them on the phone, asking questions, they have to answer. If those ten people who are from God are listening to God, all the questions that they answer will be helped by God. God will be the One using them to answer these questions for His righteous purpose. But if the other ten people are from the world, since they're not from God and are not listening to God, an enemy will step in to answer certain questions for his evil purpose, even though those people don't know that the questions they're answering to help these people outside are indeed something that will lead them astray. 

So, humans, we should look into ourselves more like we are channels. 
Every human is like a channel through whom God can use to say things on this earth to help people for His righteous purpose. And, some people are also used as channels by evil spirits and satan to pollute the earth with his evil ways.     
If we reason, we're going to see that when we are asking a question, it's because we believe that those humans are capable of answering the questions. However, there will be some questions that even those humans are not able to answer, like when you are in your room, for example, you're just asking a question, and suddenly, an answer comes to you. Who put that answer there? So, we have to understand that we have a brain, and God created us and gave us a brain, and that brain helps us to think. We can be thinking about a subject, and many answers come. 
When those answers come, we have to ask those questions: 
"Who is answering those questions?" Obviously, it is not us. If we knew the answer to that question, we would not ask it in the first place. 
So, those answers are coming from somewhere. 
Just as we are visualising people in this room, sitting with a telephone in front of them to receive calls from the outside, suppose now there are questions that are above human comprehension, people seeking to understand about the things that God has not made available for us, and probably those around them are not able to ask answer those questions, just as you're visualising people sitting on their desks and answering, also visualise the spiritual beings in the spiritual realm, picking up the phones to answer questions that humans ask daily. 

So when we ask a question, that question can either be answered to us via another human, depending on their knowledge and where they got their knowledge from, or it could be answered directly to us from a spiritual being. And among the spiritual beings, there are only two: There is God and His Kingdom, and His angels. The Kingdom of Heaven that comes with God, the Father, God, the Son, Jesus, and God, the Holy Spirit, and His angels. 
And, there's a kingdom of hell that is made of satan - the kingdom that satan builds is the kingdom of darkness - demons, evil spirits. So when people are asking questions, and there are questions that are not obvious to them, if that question is a desire from God, God will be answering that question using His many ways to help us receive the answer. But if the question a person is asking is not according to God's will, but something that will oppose God, there will be spiritual beings from the spiritual realm, answering those questions, and they are demons and satan. 

God can use a tool to speak to people, just as demons can use a tool to speak to people.  

Asking a question is not sinful, but it depends on what type of question and who moved you to ask. If the evil one puts a desire in your heart, and you are a child of God, surely you will take your many questions concerning the matter to the Lord. And the Lord will tell you that what you want to do isn't His plan for you. And if you trust the Lord and listen to Him, He will spare you from the devil's evil desires and false calling. However, if you don't trust the Lord or listen to Him, though you say you are a Christian, satan will be the one granting his desire, which he put in your heart, in your life. And you will end up serving the devil, thinking that it is the Lord you are serving. However, when you feel a calling from the Lord, He will bring you to ask Him many questions, for it is the only way you can learn, by asking questions, so that the answers are given to you.
But if it happens that the question you asked was far away from God, you'll be having a relationship and spending a part of your life or your time with these people, answering you, and that will open the door to many other questions, and you will begin this relationship with these people without knowing who they are. If it is with God, of course, you are blessed. But if that conversation is happening with demonic beings, then you are conversing with these demonic beings. 
Then if it is calling from God, and the Lord indeed wants you to be an astronomer, He will guide you in everything. Even if you have obstacles along the way that come from the side of the enemy to stop you from doing what God is saying, God will help you to become an astronomer if it was Him who put that desire in your heart in the first place. 

God sees everything. He knows where safe things are and where dangerous things are. And if you want to do God's will, and He is the One putting the desire in your heart, the desire of being an astronomer, or anything else, for His righteous purpose, He will lead you down that road, and you will come out of that road safe. But if this person wants to be an astronomer, and it's not God's will for them, but it is their own desire, put in their heart by the other one, they will certainly go down that route, and they will search in many different places to have what they want. But it will not be the Lord guiding them there. Things will go wrong at one point in their life; they will eventually realise that they have been in the wrong job. Things will happen at some point, and they will realise, "Oh, maybe I was not meant to do this, after all." 
That is why, from the very beginning, we must ask ourselves: 
Who is talking to us? Who is the one here? Who are we having this conversation with? So we have to be alert and aware. 

Don't ask questions that lead you to a place you are not meant to be.

So, is it clear now? Okay. 

The third question :

So, another person can ask, "I want to equip myself with knowledge; what do I do?"
And if you are a Christian, asking this question, it will open the door to another question: 
"What type of knowledge do you want to equip yourself with? A godly knowledge or worldly knowledge?" 
So, if you indeed desire to be equipped with godly knowledge, that is something that God loves. God will say, "Oh, that's someone who wants Godly knowledge." 

So, many humans ask questions and receive answers, and they think, 'Oh, it is them being creative.' They ask about something they don't know, and suddenly, they may wake up with the answer. And they think, "Oh." But they did ask the question. So, who are you asking that question to? That is the question we should all ask. If it is someone in front of you, even that person, when he's coming with this knowledge and answering you, he has to be getting his knowledge from somewhere. And wherever we're getting our knowledge, it always comes down to good and evil. That knowledge will be distributed in two places and fit into two categories: good and evil. Evil does not necessarily mean that as soon as you see it, it is written evil all over it; it could be something that appears totally innocent but deadly. 

One question that is godly will lead you to many other questions that are godly, and the answers will be godly. And who is there making people godly is God. 

But if someone couldn't care less and just wants knowledge from all over the place, if they don't believe in God, of course, they're going to go for worldly knowledge, and grab their knowledge from every single one they see as their influence, women and men. They're going to try to look for those who will give them the type of knowledge they want. Since they are going for the worldly knowledge, they will meet a lot of people who don't believe in God, who rely on their own philosophy and intellect. They will take them down that route, and by the time he finishes with it, that person will have their worldly knowledge, but at a cost of trading their soul along the way. 

True wisdom comes from God, and true knowledge comes from God. Worldly knowledge is filled with teachings of demons. It is why the Scriptures say, 
"Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons," (1 Timothy 4:1).
"For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear" (2 Timothy 4:3).
"Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world" (1 John 2:15-16).

Those who seek Godly Knowledge will find that their questions lead them towards God, and in doing so, they become a godly person through the discoveries they make along the way. But those who seek worldly knowledge find that their questions drive them further and further away from God, for everyone they meet and associate with only opposes God, and their desires clash with God's righteous ways. If we help someone fulfil a desire put into their hearts by satan, designed to take them away from God, we contribute to what they become.

So yes, the act of asking a question is not sinful, but the type of question we ask, and the path it leads us to, can be sinful if heading to the opposite direction to God. Someone can ask a question about God, but if they are not genuine, God, who knows everything, won't even answer it, because He knows the one asking that question is just playing around.  
God is not going to waste His time answering a question when He sees that the one asking it is not totally genuine and seeking to know with love. 
So the enemy, satan or demons, will step in and answer that question wrongly to fulfil the desire of that person who asked that question about God without a genuine love to know, or for the wrong reasons. Like many, who don't even believe in God, they go in the Bible, they're not seeking to know the truth, they're seeking to find something they can use to oppose God. When they're asking those questions, God doesn't answer them, but it is always evil spirits answering them. So they can go and read the Bible, but by the time they finish the whole Bible, they conclude, "Okay, this is a myth, God isn't there." Because the one who assisted them when they were reading was not really God, it was not God's Holy Spirit. 
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth; only He can help us understand the word of truth, the words spoken by God Himself and His Son, Jesus. 
So, those who don't believe in God are already not privileged to read the Holy Bible. What are they going to understand? They won't. Because, while they go on a venture to read the Bible so that they can refute God, they have with them satan, even though many don't know this, who actually knows the full Bible, but teaches them wrong purposely. 
He was in heaven once upon a time, he knows the truth, he just lies to people that there isn't God, but he knows there is God, he knows it. But when those humans are going there in their venture to find someone to refute God, they're failing to realise that they are not alone. The one who teaches them that God doesn't exist, which is a lie, is the one on their side. 

It takes people just a month to change their ways when they're truly with God with their hearts, minds, and souls. Just a month; that will be enough time to understand the truth if every day they have sought to listen to God. 

God moves humans to ask questions so He can answer them for His righteous purpose. Satan and his demons also move humans to ask certain questions so that they can answer them for their evil purpose. It is why many are deceived in this world and stuck in the darkness, while instead, others are in the Light of the Lord Jesus Christ. 

The Scripture tells us in 1 John 5:21,
"Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God's place in your heart."
So, as you've seen, these three questions are just an example of questions. However, humans can ask thousands of questions, and they have all different desires daily. Depending on what question that you're asking, it will open a door and take you down a different path, and if it is far away from God, the further you go down that route, it'll be taking you further away from God. And by going further away from God, you would've let that thing become the number one place in your heart. So, anything that takes God's place in our hearts is considered idolatry. Idolatry is not just physical idols like graven images, but it could be a person, or a desire that becomes more important than God. 
In some situations, some people's jobs, careers and hobbies have become their idols, meaning it is what they think about twenty-four hours a day. There is no God in their lives no more. Their jobs have replaced God. Their careers have replaced God. And that's what they have become; some are believers and others are not. These idols of theirs replaced God in their hearts, and that is sad, because those idols won't fulfil anyone who does that. It is empty, while the truth fulfilment comes from God. 

Any desire that becomes more important to us than the Lord is not given to us by the Lord, for God won't give us anything that replaces Him in our hearts, but the devil would.   

So, coming back to the question, 
"Is it sinful to ask a question?

The act of asking a question is not sinful, but the type of question we ask, and the path it leads us to, can become sinful if heading to the opposite direction to God. For if we do that, we're lost forever without God.

I pray this will help you, and may the Lord's peace be with you. 

Lord, thank You so much for these teachings, thank You for Your love and Your peace. Thank You for Your joy. Thank You for helping me and for inspiring me. And I pray that this will help people, as You intend to, Lord.
Thank You so much, Lord, for Your daily Bread, for Your provision, for Your protection. Thank You, Lord, for Your Wisdom, for Your Godly Knowledge.
Thank You, Lord, that You lead us down the understanding of life.  
Thank You for Your Kingdom, thank You for You, Father God.
Thank You for Your Son, Jesus, and thank You for Your Holy Spirit. 
We love You, God, and we thank You. Please keep on doing the great things that You always do. Keep doing them, my Lord, forever, as You are good forever. And keep teaching us, Lord, for we love Your teaching, we love Your correction, and we love Your discipline. Please protect us, as You always do, and deliver us from any evil that tries to take our minds to the opposite direction, where we won't ever find You. Thank You for bringing us close to You, my Jesus, and to help us, my Lord, to depart from anything that takes Your place in our hearts. 
We want You to be in our hearts, Lord, only You, forever. And I pray that those who hear this, if they are not already seeking to have only You in their hearts, they will begin. So, Lord, thank You that You're always there, to help everyone who is asking questions that involve doing Your will and knowing You, and knowing about Your kingdom and being Your child. 
Lord, we love You and we thank You.
