Or maybe they 00:04:15.849 --> 00:04:17.829 meet Jesus and they go, yes, I need to follow 00:04:17.829 --> 00:04:20.009 him and they're on fire for Jesus, but then slowly 00:04:20.009 --> 00:04:22.089 their life goes exactly back to where it was 00:04:22.089 --> 00:04:25.480 before they met Jesus. Through this collection, we've 00:04:47.060 --> 00:04:49.079 been walking through this book of 2 Corinthians. 00:04:49.439 --> 00:04:51.379 It's a letter that Paul wrote to the church in 00:04:51.379 --> 00:04:53.339 Corinth. It's his second edition of the letter. 00:04:53.480 --> 00:04:55.779 So he wrote his first letter to the church in 00:04:55.779 --> 00:04:57.600 Corinth, 1 Corinthians, and it was correcting 00:04:57.600 --> 00:05:00.269 a lot of the behavior that was going on. And 00:05:00.269 --> 00:05:01.829 they made those corrections. And so Paul then 00:05:01.829 --> 00:05:04.250 follows it up with a second letter. And the second 00:05:04.250 --> 00:05:06.230 Corinthians is a lot more of like, okay, now 00:05:06.230 --> 00:05:07.629 that you've corrected those, this is how you're 00:05:07.629 --> 00:05:09.230 supposed to live this life. This is what you're 00:05:09.230 --> 00:05:11.529 supposed to do. And we've been walking through 00:05:11.529 --> 00:05:14.050 in just camping, unpacking what Paul has been 00:05:14.050 --> 00:05:16.689 saying in second Corinthians chapter five. And 00:05:16.689 --> 00:05:19.550 we're in verse 14. It says this, for Christ's 00:05:19.550 --> 00:05:24.230 love compels us. Christ's love compels us, right? 00:05:24.490 --> 00:05:27.769 Compel is the motivation of why one does something. 00:05:28.199 --> 00:05:31.899 That is what compels you to do. Are you compelled 00:06:56.819 --> 00:07:01.079 by guilt? Are you compelled by shame? That is 00:07:01.079 --> 00:07:04.120 fear what compels you to do what you do in this 00:07:04.120 --> 00:07:07.759 life. You're just run by fear. That is what you're 00:07:07.759 --> 00:07:10.819 compelled by, comfort. If I just get the right 00:07:10.819 --> 00:07:13.100 situation, the right house, the right car, and 00:07:13.100 --> 00:07:15.899 I don't have to change what I get because comfort 00:07:15.899 --> 00:07:18.300 is my main thing that I want, and I'm not gonna 00:07:18.300 --> 00:07:20.980 step outside of that, and that compels you. Are 00:07:20.980 --> 00:07:24.699 you compelled by comfort? What is it that compels 00:07:24.699 --> 00:07:31.019 you? It says, for Christ's love compels us. Then 00:07:31.019 --> 00:07:34.000 he continues in verse 14. He says this, because 00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:38.839 we are convinced that one died for all. Because 00:07:38.839 --> 00:07:40.680 we're convinced that one died for all. What he 00:07:40.680 --> 00:07:43.279 is speaking to here is the crux of Christianity. 00:07:43.620 --> 00:07:46.000 This is why we are in this room. This is why 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:48.360 this building exists. That's why a location in 00:07:48.360 --> 00:07:50.040 Prescott Valley exists. This is why Heights Church 00:07:50.040 --> 00:07:53.680 exists because we are convinced that one died 00:07:53.680 --> 00:07:55.899 for all. We are convinced that Jesus was a real 00:07:55.899 --> 00:08:00.740 person that lived on this planet and Jesus lived 00:08:00.740 --> 00:08:03.199 a life where he never sinned. He did not mess 00:08:03.199 --> 00:08:07.009 up. He did not sin like you and I do. And this 00:08:07.009 --> 00:08:10.990 one man that we are convinced lived also died 00:08:10.990 --> 00:08:13.689 on a cross to pay the price for your sin and 00:08:13.689 --> 00:08:17.110 for my sin on the cross. And we are convinced 00:08:17.110 --> 00:08:19.689 of this. And Paul is saying, this is super important. 00:08:19.829 --> 00:08:21.310 This is what he is referring to. He's referring 00:08:21.310 --> 00:08:23.970 to the death of Jesus on the cross. He says, 00:08:24.050 --> 00:08:26.709 because we are convinced that one died for all, 00:08:26.790 --> 00:08:30.029 continues in verse 14 and says, and therefore 00:08:30.029 --> 00:08:34.009 all died. We're convinced that Jesus died on 00:08:34.009 --> 00:08:37.179 the cross for all of us. And therefore, in that, 00:08:37.320 --> 00:08:42.620 all have died. What does this look like? In the 00:08:42.620 --> 00:08:45.179 early 1970s, there was a man named Chuck Colson. 00:08:45.519 --> 00:08:48.600 Chuck Colson was a man that was driven by success, 00:08:48.700 --> 00:08:52.779 driven by power, was very corrupt. In fact, he 00:08:52.779 --> 00:08:55.740 worked with President Nixon and was known as 00:08:55.740 --> 00:08:59.330 his hatchet man. This guy was driven by this 00:08:59.330 --> 00:09:03.409 power, and this man was ultimately indicted and 00:09:03.409 --> 00:09:06.289 sentenced to prison. As he went into prison, 00:09:06.429 --> 00:09:08.929 he was given a book by a friend of his. The book 00:09:08.929 --> 00:09:11.029 was called Mere Christianity, and it's by an 00:09:11.029 --> 00:09:14.889 author, theologian named C .S. Lewis. And as 00:09:14.889 --> 00:09:16.750 he went into prison, he read this book, and he 00:09:16.750 --> 00:09:20.409 ended up giving his life to Jesus. In prison, 00:09:20.490 --> 00:09:23.029 he was saved. He said, I'm giving my life to 00:09:23.029 --> 00:09:27.500 Jesus. witnessed the change in his life after 00:09:27.500 --> 00:09:29.399 he gave his life to Jesus. He was no longer the 00:09:29.399 --> 00:09:33.500 person he was before. But as you've probably 00:09:33.500 --> 00:09:35.919 realized, he was in a pretty controlled environment, 00:09:36.120 --> 00:09:38.700 right? And then he got released from prison and 00:09:38.700 --> 00:09:40.799 everyone's expectation for him as he got back 00:09:40.799 --> 00:09:42.980 was to just go back to his old ways. This man 00:09:42.980 --> 00:09:44.919 who was driven by powers, driven by success, 00:09:45.039 --> 00:09:47.059 who was driven to all these things. But instead, 00:09:47.220 --> 00:09:49.860 when he came out of prison, he founded Prison 00:09:49.860 --> 00:09:53.279 Fellowship and dedicated his life to sharing 00:09:53.279 --> 00:09:56.039 Jesus with people, right? Why? Because when he 00:09:56.039 --> 00:10:00.440 met Jesus, his old life died. His old life was 00:10:00.440 --> 00:10:03.179 dead, right? Not just his life, but his nature, 00:10:03.240 --> 00:10:05.950 right? His old identity. In power and manipulation 00:10:05.950 --> 00:10:09.049 and control, that died, that was gone. And a 00:10:09.049 --> 00:10:11.610 new life that was marked by humility and service 00:10:11.610 --> 00:10:14.190 and faith in Jesus is what replaced it. All right, 00:10:14.190 --> 00:10:16.070 what Paul is saying here is he's saying, when 00:10:16.070 --> 00:10:18.409 you meet Jesus, right? Because one died for all, 00:10:18.470 --> 00:10:20.210 that means that all have died. That means that 00:10:20.210 --> 00:10:23.970 your nature was nailed to a cross with Jesus. 00:10:24.049 --> 00:10:26.970 It is gone, it is dead. All right, Paul says 00:10:26.970 --> 00:10:31.870 it this way in Romans chapter six. He said, for 00:10:31.870 --> 00:10:35.490 we know that our old self, was crucified with 00:10:35.490 --> 00:10:38.730 him so that the body ruled by sin might be done 00:10:38.730 --> 00:10:41.389 away with, that we should no longer be slaves 00:10:41.389 --> 00:10:46.649 to sin. The old nature, your old sin nature, 00:10:46.750 --> 00:10:49.809 who you were, died with Christ. That's a literal 00:10:49.809 --> 00:10:55.350 death with him. What dead is rendered inoperable. 00:10:55.370 --> 00:10:58.669 It doesn't work. The only time that something 00:10:58.669 --> 00:11:02.450 that is dead is gonna come back is if you go 00:11:02.450 --> 00:11:05.250 and pick the dead thing up and start moving around 00:11:05.250 --> 00:11:08.429 with it. It is inoperable on its own. And you 00:11:08.429 --> 00:11:10.470 go pick up something that is dead and you're 00:11:10.470 --> 00:11:12.230 gonna play puppeteer with it. It's 00:11:37.960 --> 00:11:40.840 dead. Your old nature was nailed to a cross and 00:11:40.840 --> 00:11:44.519 now it is Christ who lives in you. Which means 00:11:44.519 --> 00:11:48.769 this, it means eternity starts now. Pastor John 00:11:48.769 --> 00:11:50.730 has been talking about this idea of when we say 00:11:50.730 --> 00:11:54.029 yes to Jesus, we are eternal security. Our eternal 00:11:54.029 --> 00:11:56.870 future is secured and it is through Jesus and 00:11:56.870 --> 00:11:59.129 eternity starts now, but it's not just to look 00:11:59.129 --> 00:12:01.929 for heaven and look for eternity. It's to bring 00:12:01.929 --> 00:12:07.230 heaven to earth, to live in mission now. All 00:12:07.230 --> 00:12:08.669 right, your old is dead. That means you have 00:12:08.669 --> 00:12:11.669 a new life in Christ and your new life is marked 00:12:11.669 --> 00:12:14.250 by this mission that we get to live.
