This moved the needle in 00:06:26.910 --> 00:06:31.389 the life of Jesus. What you capture them asking 00:06:31.389 --> 00:06:34.230 is teach us how to pray. Right? That he created them 00:09:10.820 --> 00:09:14.639 to be reflectors of who he is. That you would 00:09:14.639 --> 00:09:17.059 be a reflection, that when people see you, they 00:09:17.059 --> 00:09:20.379 would see God. And then he says that they are 00:09:20.379 --> 00:09:24.519 to rule. So as a reflection of him, they are 00:09:24.519 --> 00:09:27.799 to rule. So what the word rule is, it carries 00:09:27.799 --> 00:09:32.159 royalty to it. Acts chapter 00:21:23.299 --> 00:21:28.089 12. And verse one, it was about this time that 00:21:28.089 --> 00:21:31.470 King Herod arrested some who belonged to the 00:21:31.470 --> 00:21:37.069 church intending to persecute them. He had James. 00:21:37.710 --> 00:21:39.869 the brother of John put to death with the sword. 00:21:39.990 --> 00:21:44.190 So King Herod is arresting the early church and 00:21:44.190 --> 00:21:47.009 his intent is to persecute. Not only does he 00:21:47.009 --> 00:21:50.029 arrest, but he actually puts to death, right? 00:21:50.269 --> 00:21:53.049 And here's the thing, James is put to death. 00:21:53.130 --> 00:21:56.069 And in that, I want you to capture, what does 00:21:56.069 --> 00:22:00.329 this mean for the church? Okay, so imagine we're 00:22:00.329 --> 00:22:03.119 here today. There's a new regime that comes in 00:22:03.119 --> 00:22:05.380 place. And that king's like, I'm going to start 00:22:05.380 --> 00:22:06.880 pursuing the church and putting them to death. 00:22:07.000 --> 00:22:09.420 And everybody outside of the church is celebrating 00:22:09.420 --> 00:22:11.440 that you're being persecuted and put to death. 00:22:11.599 --> 00:22:15.420 I don't know about you. My natural thing is like, 00:22:15.559 --> 00:22:19.559 that's not good. To be scared, to be worried, 00:22:19.680 --> 00:22:22.319 because they are actively putting them to death. 00:22:23.279 --> 00:22:26.680 And so in this context, all of the human feels 00:22:26.680 --> 00:22:29.559 are there, right? Like all of the natural fears 00:22:29.559 --> 00:22:31.859 that would have been into it. into the moment. 00:22:32.279 --> 00:22:34.319 And so then in verse three, it says, when he 00:22:34.319 --> 00:22:37.940 saw, so when the king sees that this met with 00:22:37.940 --> 00:22:40.579 approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize 00:22:40.579 --> 00:22:49.920 Peter also. So what happens is the Jews who are 00:22:49.920 --> 00:22:53.859 the ones that by having their support, by not 00:22:53.859 --> 00:22:56.480 creating any riots, by keeping the peace, so 00:22:56.480 --> 00:23:00.539 to speak, By making them happy, that keeps him 00:23:00.539 --> 00:23:04.680 in power. So what is happening, the king politically 00:23:04.680 --> 00:23:08.819 is making a power move, a power play. He is, 00:23:08.839 --> 00:23:13.220 you might say, using the worldly things to shape 00:23:13.220 --> 00:23:19.299 his kingdom, right? The king is using means of 00:23:19.299 --> 00:23:22.759 violence. He's using means of coercion. He's 00:23:22.759 --> 00:23:26.500 using means of... playing the political power 00:23:26.500 --> 00:23:30.579 game, and he's doing it all to what? To shape, 00:23:30.599 --> 00:23:35.579 to shape the world around him. So much so that 00:23:35.579 --> 00:23:39.240 then verse four, he says, after arresting Peter, 00:23:39.359 --> 00:23:41.380 so Peter's a leader in the church, after arresting 00:23:41.380 --> 00:23:44.519 Peter. He put him in prison, handing him over 00:23:44.519 --> 00:23:46.940 to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers 00:23:46.940 --> 00:23:49.960 each. Herod intended to bring him out for public 00:23:49.960 --> 00:23:53.059 trial after Passover. So he arrests Peter, who's 00:23:53.059 --> 00:23:55.880 the leader. He puts him into a prison. The best 00:23:55.880 --> 00:23:58.859 we can tell, there were these four squads. And 00:23:58.859 --> 00:24:00.559 in those four squads, there was four soldiers. 00:24:00.839 --> 00:24:03.980 And so two of the soldiers would be side by side 00:24:03.980 --> 00:24:06.819 with him, chained to him. Now the public trial, because he already 00:24:20.200 --> 00:24:22.619 knows the favor of the people are what? On his 00:24:22.619 --> 00:24:25.720 side, the public trial of Peter, you might as 00:24:25.720 --> 00:24:27.200 well have just said is a death sentence. He's 00:24:27.200 --> 00:24:33.039 gonna be put to death. So you've got a king who 00:24:33.039 --> 00:24:38.160 is using the world around him, using worldly 00:24:38.160 --> 00:24:43.029 measure, worldly. activities, if you like, false 00:24:43.029 --> 00:24:48.349 senses of power, false senses of fear, to shape 00:24:48.349 --> 00:24:50.890 the world to be how he wants it to be. But here's 00:26:05.019 --> 00:26:08.940 the thing, the king is shaping the world around 00:26:08.940 --> 00:26:16.910 him. And he's using... The world's means to do 00:26:16.910 --> 00:26:23.349 it. And as he shapes, at some point, it becomes 00:26:23.349 --> 00:26:27.730 extremely limited. At some point, his power will 00:26:27.730 --> 00:26:31.549 run out. Because what he's tapped into is a false 00:26:31.549 --> 00:26:35.970 sense of power that was never created to ignite 00:26:35.970 --> 00:26:39.990 who God created him to be. And to shape the world 00:26:39.990 --> 00:26:42.769 around him the way God intended to shape the 00:26:42.769 --> 00:26:54.990 world around him. That's 00:27:58.609 --> 00:28:02.720 what the church is doing. This is not good. You 00:28:02.720 --> 00:28:04.299 know what happens? I mean, you can imagine the 00:28:04.299 --> 00:28:05.960 conversation, right? You know what happens when 00:28:05.960 --> 00:28:07.259 he goes to trial? They're definitely going to 00:28:07.259 --> 00:28:10.779 condemn him. And the temptation is that I go and 00:28:15.779 --> 00:28:18.680 I shape it by this, right? Like I shape it by 00:28:18.680 --> 00:28:21.119 what I can do. Instead, what we're given by the 00:28:21.119 --> 00:28:24.839 church is they step into what? They step into 00:28:24.839 --> 00:28:26.640 prayer and it's not just any kind of prayer. 00:28:26.759 --> 00:28:29.900 That word earnestly is to fervently pray. It 00:28:29.900 --> 00:28:33.640 is also to constantly pray. They constantly went 00:28:33.640 --> 00:28:36.640 to what? The power source that they knew. What 00:28:36.640 --> 00:28:38.640 does the church do? The church goes, I'm going 00:28:38.640 --> 00:28:41.279 to connect. I'm going to connect to what we've 00:28:41.279 --> 00:28:43.819 been given in Jesus. And through the power of 00:28:43.819 --> 00:28:46.039 the Holy Spirit, we're going to go to God in 00:28:46.039 --> 00:28:50.059 prayer. I'm going to ask him to work. We're going 00:28:50.059 --> 00:28:54.119 to ask him to shape. That what seems impossible 00:28:54.119 --> 00:28:59.039 is possible with God. And so we're going to go 00:28:59.039 --> 00:29:01.079 to the source. We're going to go to heaven's 00:29:01.079 --> 00:29:04.400 resources and ask them to flood. Listen to what 00:29:04.400 --> 00:29:08.400 happens. The night before, Herod was to bring 00:29:08.400 --> 00:29:10.819 him to trial. So the night before, this is last 00:29:10.819 --> 00:29:13.079 minute, y 'all. The night before, like the next 00:29:13.079 --> 00:29:14.900 morning, he's going to trial. He's going to be 00:29:14.900 --> 00:29:16.839 found guilty. He's going to be put to death, 00:29:16.880 --> 00:29:19.079 right? So that's the kind of timeline. This is 00:29:19.079 --> 00:29:28.180 last minute. Peter was sleeping between two soldiers 00:29:28.180 --> 00:29:32.259 bound with two chains. And sentries stood guard 00:29:32.259 --> 00:29:42.460 at the entrance. Wait. Peter's chained to two 00:29:42.460 --> 00:29:46.799 soldiers. And what is he doing? The night before, 00:29:46.920 --> 00:29:54.180 the last minute, he's sleeping.
