So forgiveness means to cancel 00:00:24.739 --> 00:00:28.019 a debt or to stop feeling angry or resentful 00:00:28.019 --> 00:00:30.780 towards someone for an offense, flaw, or mistake. 00:00:30.989 --> 00:00:33.109 And the reason it's important to forgive quickly 00:00:33.109 --> 00:00:35.829 is because unforgiveness will sit and fester 00:00:35.829 --> 00:00:38.710 in our hearts, and then it will become a hatred. 00:00:39.090 --> 00:00:41.649 And in 1 John 4 verse 20, it says we cannot say 00:00:41.649 --> 00:00:44.189 that we love God and hate another person at the 00:00:44.189 --> 00:00:46.530 same time. So, I have to become friends with a 00:00:46.530 --> 00:00:49.270 bully?! No, that is definitely not what I'm saying 00:00:49.270 --> 00:00:52.289 because forgiveness does not always mean reconciliation, 00:00:52.289 --> 00:00:54.969 and it does not mean giving someone permission 00:00:54.969 --> 00:00:57.450 to hurt you again. So, if someone is dangerous 00:00:57.450 --> 00:01:00.390 to be around, yes, we should forgive them. Pray 00:01:00.390 --> 00:01:02.990 for our enemies, but God (JESUS) isn't saying to put 00:01:02.990 --> 00:01:05.209 ourselves in a situation where we can get hurt 00:01:05.209 --> 00:01:08.230 by them, physically or psychologically. Forgiveness 00:01:08.230 --> 00:01:11.430 is necessary, but so are boundaries. Alright, 00:01:11.430 --> 00:01:13.390 now that we've unpacked that little disclaimer, 00:01:13.609 --> 00:01:16.530 now let's get into what Ephesians 4 verse 32 00:01:16.530 --> 00:01:28.750 says. It says, I mean, when I think about it, 00:01:28.769 --> 00:01:44.120 God forgives me - And I know that sometimes it's difficult 00:01:44.120 --> 00:01:46.739 to forgive and love others because let's be honest, 00:01:46.920 --> 00:01:49.120 our flesh wants to do the complete opposite. 00:01:49.659 --> 00:01:51.659 But once we're saved, we have the Holy Spirit 00:01:51.659 --> 00:01:54.299 living inside of us. And the Holy Spirit enables 00:01:54.299 --> 00:01:57.459 us to love and forgive others just as God has 00:01:57.459 --> 00:02:01.900 loved and forgive - Okay, I forgave them once, 00:02:02.120 --> 00:02:04.359 but they keep doing the same thing. How many 00:02:04.359 --> 00:02:06.959 times am I supposed to forgive the same person? 00:02:07.340 --> 00:02:09.340 Well, what you said actually reminds me of a 00:02:09.340 --> 00:02:12.120 parable in Matthew chapter 18. Basically, Peter 00:02:12.120 --> 00:02:14.639 came to Jesus and said, this person keeps wronging 00:02:14.639 --> 00:02:17.080 me so many times. I already forgave them seven 00:02:17.080 --> 00:02:19.360 times. Now what should I do, Lord? And Jesus 00:02:19.360 --> 00:02:22.219 says to him, I tell you. Don't just forgive him 00:02:22.219 --> 00:02:25.479 seven times. Forgive him seven times 70 times (7x70), 00:02:25.500 --> 00:02:28.819 which equals 490. Oh, well, this person has sinned 00:02:28.819 --> 00:02:31.639 against me 54 times, so now I only have to forgive 00:02:31.639 --> 00:02:35.000 them another 436 times. Now, Jesus isn't giving 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:37.560 us an exact number. Once this person sins against 00:02:37.560 --> 00:02:40.620 me 490 times, I stop forgiving them. But the 00:02:40.620 --> 00:02:43.620 point is to say, extend grace to the person just 00:02:43.620 --> 00:02:46.259 as God has extended grace to us. So, what's the 00:02:46.259 --> 00:02:48.419 parable that you were talking about? Oh, let 00:02:48.419 --> 00:02:50.680 me get back on track. So basically, there was 00:02:50.680 --> 00:02:53.039 a king who decided to collect his money from 00:02:53.039 --> 00:02:55.479 his servants who owed him. And the king began 00:02:55.479 --> 00:02:58.539 to collect his money, and one servant owed him 00:02:58.539 --> 00:03:01.650 several thousand pounds of silver. He was not 00:03:01.650 --> 00:03:03.569 able to pay the money to his master, the king. 00:03:03.909 --> 00:03:06.610 So the master ordered that he and everything 00:03:06.610 --> 00:03:09.270 he owned be sold and that his whole family be 00:03:09.270 --> 00:03:12.090 thrown into prison. Oh my gosh. I know, right? 00:03:12.330 --> 00:03:15.030 But the servant fell to his knees and begged 00:03:15.030 --> 00:03:17.909 the king, be patient with me. I will pay you 00:03:17.909 --> 00:03:20.789 everything that I owe. So the master felt sorry 00:03:20.789 --> 00:03:23.150 for him and he told the servant that he did not 00:03:23.150 --> 00:03:25.770 have to pay. He let the servant go free. Wow, 00:03:25.789 --> 00:03:28.009 that is so great. That's such a great story. 00:03:28.289 --> 00:03:30.270 We're not at the end of the parable though. The 00:03:30.270 --> 00:03:32.969 same servant found his personal servant who owed 00:03:32.969 --> 00:03:36.050 him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him around 00:03:36.050 --> 00:03:37.849 the neck and said, pay me the money you owe me. 00:03:37.870 --> 00:03:39.969 Yeesh, that sounds like an assault. The other 00:03:39.969 --> 00:03:42.449 servant fell on his knees and begged him, be 00:03:42.449 --> 00:03:44.909 patient with me, I promise I will pay you everything 00:03:44.909 --> 00:03:48.520 I owe. But the first servant refused to be patient, 00:03:48.819 --> 00:03:51.159 and that servant was put in jail until he could 00:03:51.159 --> 00:03:53.680 pay everything he owed. Another servant saw what 00:03:53.680 --> 00:03:56.039 happened, felt sorry for the man, and told the 00:03:56.039 --> 00:03:58.439 king. And then the king called his servant in 00:03:58.439 --> 00:04:01.379 and said, you evil servant, you begged me to 00:04:01.379 --> 00:04:03.240 forgive your debt, and I said you did not have 00:04:03.240 --> 00:04:05.639 to pay me anything. So you should have given 00:04:05.639 --> 00:04:07.979 that other man who serves you the same mercy 00:04:07.979 --> 00:04:11.460 I gave you. In verse 35 of Matthew chapter 18, 00:04:11.719 --> 00:04:14.139 Jesus gives us a moral to the parable. He says 00:04:14.139 --> 00:04:23.800 this king did the same. Oh my gosh, am I going 00:04:23.800 --> 00:04:26.100 to hell? Let me straighten this out. No, this 00:04:26.100 --> 00:04:28.139 does not mean you're gonna go to hell. It simply 00:04:28.139 --> 00:04:30.060 means that we're not gonna have the peace of 00:04:30.060 --> 00:04:32.899 God. And that is why Jesus wants us to forgive 00:04:32.899 --> 00:04:36.220 each other. In Colossians 3 verse 13, EASYEnglish 00:04:36.220 --> 00:04:38.360 Bible, it says, do not become angry with each 00:04:38.360 --> 00:04:40.540 other. If you think someone has done something 00:04:40.540 --> 00:04:43.600 wrong against you, forgive them. Remember that 00:04:43.600 --> 00:04:46.060 the Lord has forgiven you, so you should also 00:04:46.060 --> 00:04:48.699 forgive other people. This scripture is telling 00:04:48.699 --> 00:04:50.860 us that if we have a complaint against someone, 00:04:50.920 --> 00:04:53.500 if we feel offended by someone, if we feel angry 00:04:53.500 --> 00:04:56.560 at someone, we need to forgive, which is sometimes 00:04:56.560 --> 00:04:58.500 easier said than done, I'll give you that. But 00:04:58.500 --> 00:05:00.779 remember, we have to forgive in the strength 00:05:00.779 --> 00:05:04.060 of God, in the agape love of God. We have to 00:05:04.060 --> 00:05:07.519 remember that God forgives us every single day 00:05:07.519 --> 00:05:10.759 So who are we to not forgive our brother or sister 00:05:10.759 --> 00:05:12.939 a lot of times? We don't forgive quickly and 00:05:12.939 --> 00:05:15.680 often because we want to hold on to the anger 00:05:15.680 --> 00:05:18.420 that we feel or the pride that we feel entitled 00:05:18.420 --> 00:05:20.899 to but really, we're not entitled to anything 00:05:20.899 --> 00:05:23.500 and once we let go of our entitlement and pride 00:05:23.500 --> 00:05:26.639 We can forgive others because we humbly remember 00:05:26.639 --> 00:05:29.699 that we sin maybe even more than the other person 00:05:29.699 --> 00:05:32.240 So remember that today we can have authority 00:05:32.329 --> 00:05:35.509 through Christ over our human nature and choose 00:05:35.509 --> 00:05:37.970 to forgive. And whenever I feel like this is 00:05:37.970 --> 00:05:40.389 very difficult for me to do, I just remember 00:05:40.389 --> 00:05:44.459 Luke 23 verse 34, which says, Jesus said, Father, 00:05:44.560 --> 00:05:47.100 forgive them, for they don't know what they are 00:05:47.100 --> 00:05:49.220 doing. A lot of the times people sin against 00:05:49.220 --> 00:05:51.420 us, offend us, or make us angry because they 00:05:51.420 --> 00:05:54.519 are simply ignorant to their sinful nature, just 00:05:54.519 --> 00:05:57.339 as we once were. So the amazing thing about this 00:05:57.339 --> 00:06:01.000 scripture is Jesus is completely sinless. But 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:03.660 while he was being crucified, while they were 00:06:03.660 --> 00:06:05.939 spitting on him, gambling for his clothes, and 00:06:05.939 --> 00:06:08.480 making a mockery of him, he was praying for the 00:06:08.480 --> 00:06:11.160 same people that were persecuting him. He even 00:06:11.160 --> 00:06:14.420 prayed for God's mercy on them. Wow, Jesus really 00:06:14.420 --> 00:06:17.639 is the best example. Of course. So the next time 00:06:17.639 --> 00:06:19.500 we feel that someone has done something to us 00:06:19.500 --> 00:06:22.620 that is unforgivable, let's pray for God to bless 00:06:22.620 --> 00:06:25.439 them.
