It makes sense to 00:02:27.270 --> 00:02:29.669 me. And I'll just give you a little overview 00:02:29.669 --> 00:02:33.710 of how I got here. I studied art and design and 00:02:33.710 --> 00:02:36.129 art history in college. And that was a passion 00:02:36.129 --> 00:02:38.610 of mine. And that was sort of my first step forward. 00:02:38.750 --> 00:02:40.389 That was the logical thing that I knew I was 00:02:40.389 --> 00:02:42.729 going to study. I was a creative kid. I was always 00:02:42.729 --> 00:02:45.330 making stuff. I admired artists. And I just made 00:02:45.330 --> 00:02:46.889 that choice. I'm going to study art and design. 00:02:47.210 --> 00:02:49.870 And I went on to the School of the Art Institute 00:02:49.870 --> 00:02:53.870 of Chicago, where I decided to study education. 00:02:54.129 --> 00:02:56.909 So I got a master's in art. education, knowing 00:02:56.909 --> 00:02:59.650 that as an artist, I was going to probably do 00:02:59.650 --> 00:03:02.770 multiple things. So I kind of launched my career 00:03:02.770 --> 00:03:05.210 with this mindset that my career was going to 00:03:05.210 --> 00:03:08.750 embody different tracks and I would be following 00:03:08.750 --> 00:03:14.469 different threads. And early on, I did work as 00:03:14.469 --> 00:03:18.099 a graphic designer in book publishing. When that 00:03:18.099 --> 00:03:19.939 was a thing, you know, book jackets, book pages, 00:03:20.039 --> 00:03:23.460 book layout, and then in advertising. And when 00:03:23.460 --> 00:03:25.360 I was at the advertising company at that point, 00:03:25.379 --> 00:03:29.219 I had a friend who was dean of a visual communications 00:03:29.219 --> 00:03:31.699 program at a school here in Chicago and asked 00:03:31.699 --> 00:03:33.879 me if I would teach a visual communications class. 00:03:34.300 --> 00:03:36.960 And I said, sure, I would love that. And I prepared 00:03:36.960 --> 00:03:38.879 the class and I trundled off. I remember the 00:03:38.879 --> 00:03:41.919 class was 6 to 9 p .m. And I taught my first 00:03:41.919 --> 00:03:44.500 class and I came home and I was just like, I 00:03:44.500 --> 00:03:46.659 cannot believe they're paying me to do this. 00:03:46.729 --> 00:03:50.969 It was so much more fun than advertising. Whatever that is, 00:04:30.310 --> 00:04:32.490 I like it. I got into e -learning and then I 00:04:32.490 --> 00:04:35.550 also set myself up as an e -learning consultant 00:04:35.550 --> 00:04:37.949 and I did everything around sort of humanities 00:04:37.949 --> 00:04:41.490 e -learning. And that was a part of the. The 00:04:41.490 --> 00:04:43.910 internet that was so interesting is the outreach 00:04:43.910 --> 00:04:46.550 to people who wouldn't have this information 00:04:46.550 --> 00:04:49.589 or these experiences or connections, relationships 00:04:49.589 --> 00:04:52.870 otherwise. I loved the democratization of e -learning. 00:04:53.029 --> 00:04:55.550 And I also loved having people in my classroom 00:04:55.550 --> 00:04:58.310 who otherwise might not be in any classroom. 00:04:58.529 --> 00:05:01.529 And that can be women who are raising children 00:05:01.529 --> 00:05:03.810 at the same time or women whose kids are also 00:05:03.810 --> 00:05:06.029 going to college at the same time. I've had that 00:05:06.029 --> 00:05:09.110 scenario many times. And I remember early on 00:05:09.110 --> 00:05:12.069 reading that. that e -learning classrooms were 00:05:12.069 --> 00:05:14.870 often more successful for people who wouldn't 00:05:14.870 --> 00:05:18.350 speak up. normally in a regular classroom, that 00:05:18.350 --> 00:05:22.509 they didn't feel they had the voice to overpower 00:05:22.509 --> 00:05:24.490 louder voices in a regular classroom. There's 00:05:24.490 --> 00:05:26.029 certain people who will speak and others who 00:05:26.029 --> 00:05:28.269 won't, and that e -learning really, really serves 00:05:28.269 --> 00:05:31.350 people who just need a minute to speak or wouldn't 00:05:31.350 --> 00:05:34.129 speak at all. I actually began coaching at Southern 00:05:34.129 --> 00:05:36.370 New Hampshire a few years ago when we rolled 00:05:36.370 --> 00:05:39.250 over into a culture of coaching, and I was hired 00:05:39.250 --> 00:05:44.019 to coach a cohort of faculty members. every term 00:05:44.019 --> 00:05:46.500 where faculty members are all assigned to coach 00:05:46.500 --> 00:05:49.959 and work on various pieces of professional development 00:05:49.959 --> 00:05:54.579 in executive coaching. training programs may 00:05:54.579 --> 00:05:57.819 or may not work they may or may not serve a population 00:05:57.819 --> 00:06:00.800 they may be something that hr has just thrown 00:06:00.800 --> 00:06:03.740 some dollars at or people may be somewhat involved 00:06:03.740 --> 00:06:07.939 but coaching works coaching supports people and 00:06:07.939 --> 00:06:10.740 coaching supports people moving from this place 00:06:10.740 --> 00:06:14.240 to that place from making behavior change from 00:06:14.240 --> 00:06:16.420 thinking about themselves differently there's 00:06:16.420 --> 00:06:18.779 so many different powerful and potent things 00:06:18.779 --> 00:06:20.800 that really come out of coaching and the more 00:06:20.800 --> 00:06:23.199 involved i was in coaching the more i I liked 00:06:23.199 --> 00:06:25.860 it and loved it. And so at some point during 00:06:25.860 --> 00:06:28.019 the pandemic, I went back to school and got more 00:06:28.019 --> 00:06:31.600 training around coaching. And I started right 00:06:31.600 --> 00:06:35.740 away as an executive coach and taking on executive 00:06:35.740 --> 00:06:37.819 clients because that was the space I was working 00:06:37.819 --> 00:06:41.139 in. But from the get -go, I always said to my 00:06:41.139 --> 00:06:43.720 coachees, usually they were with me for a particular 00:06:43.720 --> 00:06:46.120 reason. Sometimes that purpose was something 00:06:46.120 --> 00:06:49.160 organizational that the organization had hired 00:06:49.160 --> 00:06:51.899 coaches to coach through a particular. change 00:06:51.899 --> 00:06:54.100 or a thing that was going on and sometimes they 00:06:54.100 --> 00:06:56.500 would end up with me for more personal reasons 00:06:56.500 --> 00:06:58.680 but i would always start the session we bring 00:06:58.680 --> 00:07:01.279 our whole selves to work bring your whole self 00:07:01.279 --> 00:07:03.100 to the coaching session we can talk about anything 00:07:03.100 --> 00:07:05.459 there's no wrong in the coaching session and 00:07:05.459 --> 00:07:07.959 usually some people are very concerned about 00:07:07.959 --> 00:07:09.959 sticking with work topics and would stay with 00:07:09.959 --> 00:07:12.439 with what was happening at work and some people 00:07:12.439 --> 00:07:15.220 would We would build trust quickly and would 00:07:15.220 --> 00:07:17.740 say, yes, this, that, and this is going on. But 00:07:17.740 --> 00:07:20.459 also, as a matter of fact, these other things 00:07:20.459 --> 00:07:22.860 are also going on in my life. And these are real 00:07:22.860 --> 00:07:25.259 things. And I did get more and more interested 00:07:25.259 --> 00:07:29.740 in not business problems, but human experience 00:07:29.740 --> 00:07:34.579 and how coaching can help comb things. And even 00:07:34.579 --> 00:07:37.680 if you're in coaching because of a change going 00:07:37.680 --> 00:07:40.920 on at work, I use that verb to comb. There is 00:07:40.920 --> 00:07:44.310 a lot of that you can detangle. and see with 00:07:44.310 --> 00:07:46.649 clarity your way forward with that particular 00:07:46.649 --> 00:07:49.410 problem. So sometimes we do need to get rid of 00:07:49.410 --> 00:07:51.389 other things or talk through or even just say 00:07:51.389 --> 00:07:54.370 things out loud. And I've had many coaches say 00:07:54.370 --> 00:07:57.310 something and then they'd say, I can't say that 00:07:57.310 --> 00:08:00.029 at home and I can't say that at work. And then 00:08:00.029 --> 00:08:01.529 they've said it, they've said it out loud, and 00:08:01.529 --> 00:08:03.990 then it can be worked on as they decide they 00:08:03.990 --> 00:08:07.350 want to work on it. But I did decide last year 00:08:07.350 --> 00:08:08.970 that I wanted to know more about mental health 00:08:08.970 --> 00:08:11.569 coaching because mental health, not meaning that 00:08:11.569 --> 00:08:14.149 something is necessarily wrong, but something 00:08:14.149 --> 00:08:19.160 is a certain way that. can be handled and managed 00:08:19.160 --> 00:08:22.379 in order for that person to feel and do and be 00:08:22.379 --> 00:08:25.800 better. I think mental health in medicine means 00:08:25.800 --> 00:08:28.300 there's a problem, but my approach to mental 00:08:28.300 --> 00:08:29.939 health, I guess I would use the word wellness, 00:08:30.019 --> 00:08:31.660 but I'm interested in mental health and wellness. 00:08:32.080 --> 00:08:36.940 And so the coaching approach remains the same. 00:08:37.600 --> 00:08:40.179 But that's where I am now. I just recently started working 00:08:51.649 --> 00:08:54.769 for an outfit out West that is a not -for -profit 00:08:54.769 --> 00:08:59.049 and supports musicians, music industry, and their 00:08:59.049 --> 00:09:02.389 families with mental health resources. They're 00:09:02.389 --> 00:09:04.950 called Backline and a very interesting outfit. 00:09:05.129 --> 00:09:07.269 And I think there's more awareness around mental 00:09:07.269 --> 00:09:10.259 health. in specific niches and this is their 00:09:10.259 --> 00:09:12.500 this niche is mental health in the music industry 00:09:12.500 --> 00:09:16.240 so from touring musicians to venue owners to 00:09:16.240 --> 00:09:19.919 the gamut i'm also a musician i write songs and 00:09:19.919 --> 00:09:24.059 perform them and release records That's incredible. 00:09:24.559 --> 00:09:26.960 Well, that gives us a lot to take in and think 00:09:26.960 --> 00:09:29.379 about. And so I'm originally considering, you 00:09:29.379 --> 00:09:31.460 know, I never got to see that core difference 00:09:31.460 --> 00:09:33.899 between coaching and training. And I think you 00:09:33.899 --> 00:09:36.639 started to articulate that very well. And I wanted 00:09:36.639 --> 00:09:39.500 to know if you could also guide us through those 00:09:39.500 --> 00:09:44.080 differing verbs, if you will, to train and to 00:09:44.080 --> 00:09:46.580 coach in an organization. And what would you 00:09:46.580 --> 00:09:51.000 play with that? Yeah, so training. Training has 00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:54.500 really, really specific outcomes. We're throwing 00:09:54.500 --> 00:09:57.379 money at a problem and we've hired some people 00:09:57.379 --> 00:09:59.399 to put a training program around that problem. 00:09:59.480 --> 00:10:01.539 And we're going to sit you guys down for two 00:10:01.539 --> 00:10:05.100 hours or whatever the cadence is. And we're going 00:10:05.100 --> 00:10:07.299 to get you to do things a little differently 00:10:07.299 --> 00:10:10.740 now. And I think that that might be the big. 00:10:11.629 --> 00:10:13.429 purpose of training is to do things differently 00:10:13.429 --> 00:10:17.250 some training is about developing awareness and 00:10:17.250 --> 00:10:21.070 so that does sort of blurs into coaching but 00:10:21.070 --> 00:10:24.230 coaching working with a coach whether you're 00:10:24.230 --> 00:10:26.970 with working as a part of a team or you're working 00:10:26.970 --> 00:10:29.929 as an individual coaching is about expanding 00:10:29.929 --> 00:10:33.450 your awareness about understanding things differently 00:10:33.450 --> 00:10:35.970 about experiencing things from different perspectives 00:10:35.970 --> 00:10:39.870 from different points of view and clarifying 00:10:39.870 --> 00:10:44.230 for yourself things that are true and things 00:10:44.230 --> 00:10:48.610 that are possible. So I imagine our brain, which 00:10:48.610 --> 00:10:50.529 I know very little about, I don't know anything 00:10:50.529 --> 00:10:52.570 about brain, but I do think about the brain a 00:10:52.570 --> 00:10:55.450 lot. I see it as plastic, as malleable, as something 00:10:55.450 --> 00:10:57.769 changing. And with coaching, you can change its 00:10:57.769 --> 00:10:59.330 shape. Of course, you're not actually changing 00:10:59.330 --> 00:11:01.129 its shape, but you're changing your position 00:11:01.129 --> 00:11:03.669 within it. You're changing how you travel, how 00:11:03.669 --> 00:11:05.789 you work with this tool, which is your brain. 00:11:05.830 --> 00:11:09.570 And rather than letting it drive, Whoever you 00:11:09.570 --> 00:11:12.009 are, whatever, however it actually works, you 00:11:12.009 --> 00:11:15.309 have awareness as you travel around. For a small 00:11:15.309 --> 00:11:19.269 thing, you wake up, you're walking around your 00:11:19.269 --> 00:11:21.490 house, you have a cup of coffee, something triggers 00:11:21.490 --> 00:11:26.129 you to feel sad. It could be it's raining out 00:11:26.129 --> 00:11:28.850 or a headline on a newspaper, but we don't have 00:11:28.850 --> 00:11:30.549 newspapers anymore, but maybe your laptop is 00:11:30.549 --> 00:11:33.659 open. You see a headline or you remember something 00:11:33.659 --> 00:11:35.860 or you think about an argument with somebody. 00:11:35.960 --> 00:11:38.299 Something happens and it's a small thing. And 00:11:38.299 --> 00:11:40.519 suddenly you feel sad and you're like, ugh, I 00:11:40.519 --> 00:11:41.820 have a day in front of me. And you don't even 00:11:41.820 --> 00:11:45.200 know why. It's been such a micro event in your 00:11:45.200 --> 00:11:48.879 brain. And then you think, ugh, I am sad. I do 00:11:48.879 --> 00:11:52.419 feel this way. I don't like this day. And it 00:11:52.419 --> 00:11:54.940 affects how everything rolls out in front of 00:11:54.940 --> 00:11:57.279 you. But with a little bit of awareness, you 00:11:57.279 --> 00:12:00.639 might be aware. I feel this way on rainy days 00:12:00.639 --> 00:12:03.259 because it reminds me of that time when I was 00:12:03.259 --> 00:12:05.299 a child and it rained, you know, whatever it 00:12:05.299 --> 00:12:07.460 is. But when you have awareness around it and 00:12:07.460 --> 00:12:10.059 you can flip it, I'm not sad because it's raining. 00:12:10.179 --> 00:12:13.179 I'm an adult. I can handle this. I actually like 00:12:13.179 --> 00:12:15.039 it when it's raining. It's watering the plants. 00:12:15.200 --> 00:12:18.379 I love this. And I don't mean that you're... 00:12:18.649 --> 00:12:20.850 gaslighting yourself or that you're lying to 00:12:20.850 --> 00:12:24.429 yourself but you can flip things and examine 00:12:24.429 --> 00:12:26.429 them from the other side you don't have to just 00:12:26.429 --> 00:12:30.990 accept whatever meal your brain dishes up you 00:12:30.990 --> 00:12:33.870 can send it back to the kitchen right so training 00:12:33.870 --> 00:12:36.909 is like retraining or reworking the brain towards 00:12:36.909 --> 00:12:39.509 some type of standard like At the university 00:12:39.509 --> 00:12:42.830 level, we as instructors have all these quote 00:12:42.830 --> 00:12:44.549 unquote trainings at the beginning of the year. 00:12:44.610 --> 00:12:46.950 It's like, oh, here is the most tedious season 00:12:46.950 --> 00:12:50.110 of all. But when it comes to coaching, it's like 00:12:50.110 --> 00:12:53.110 you are retraining the person with a certain 00:12:53.110 --> 00:12:54.690 behavior that they're following through. And 00:12:54.690 --> 00:12:56.289 I think that's an important distinction because 00:12:56.289 --> 00:13:00.509 people might be more receptive, even though it's 00:13:00.509 --> 00:13:03.470 a vulnerable situation, to retrain a behavior 00:13:03.470 --> 00:13:06.429 by the way that they're guided and coached. Yeah. 00:13:06.879 --> 00:13:08.720 And coaching just sounds like so much more because 00:13:08.720 --> 00:13:10.220 you're involving the whole person with their 00:13:10.220 --> 00:13:12.480 behaviors. And what makes me also think about 00:13:12.480 --> 00:13:15.539 what that is, when you talk about certain niches 00:13:15.539 --> 00:13:18.500 working to get coaching services, clearly it 00:13:18.500 --> 00:13:20.299 sounds like that's a service that they're wanting 00:13:20.299 --> 00:13:22.759 to move forward with intrinsically and on their 00:13:22.759 --> 00:13:25.360 own. What types of groups, whether it's musicians, 00:13:25.580 --> 00:13:29.039 leaders, students, employees, what types of audiences 00:13:29.039 --> 00:13:32.080 are really trying to, have you noticed, get coaching 00:13:32.080 --> 00:13:34.679 for themselves because they see the benefits 00:13:34.679 --> 00:13:36.200 in the way that will improve their conditions? 00:13:36.840 --> 00:13:39.139 Yeah, that is a really good question. I'm seeing 00:13:39.139 --> 00:13:41.240 that question on two sides because there's what 00:13:41.240 --> 00:13:43.600 kind of organizations are reaching out to get 00:13:43.600 --> 00:13:45.360 coaching. That's often the first time people 00:13:45.360 --> 00:13:47.639 have access to coaching is when it's done for 00:13:47.639 --> 00:13:49.779 them. And then what kind of people are reaching 00:13:49.779 --> 00:13:53.059 out themselves. So let me start with the organizational 00:13:53.059 --> 00:13:54.799 side of it because that's where I'm seeing a 00:13:54.799 --> 00:13:58.559 huge change right now. Traditionally, corporations 00:13:58.559 --> 00:14:01.840 would hire coaches for their high performers 00:14:01.840 --> 00:14:06.779 and for their C -suite and executives. Individual 00:14:06.779 --> 00:14:08.799 contributors often would get maybe a little bit 00:14:08.799 --> 00:14:12.320 of coaching, but usually they get training. So 00:14:12.320 --> 00:14:15.039 the more the corporation thinks that the person 00:14:15.039 --> 00:14:16.779 is valuable, the more they'll invest in coaching 00:14:16.779 --> 00:14:20.460 for them. And that is why there's a huge executive 00:14:20.460 --> 00:14:24.000 coaching industry is because there are coaching 00:14:24.000 --> 00:14:28.980 dollars there. There 00:14:32.139 --> 00:14:35.009 is more and more. mental health coaching and 00:14:35.009 --> 00:14:37.389 health and wellness coaching within the healthcare 00:14:37.389 --> 00:14:41.090 system paid for by insurance. And that's a recent 00:14:41.090 --> 00:14:44.409 change where insurance companies are now absorbing 00:14:44.409 --> 00:14:47.389 coaching into their offerings or as a service 00:14:47.389 --> 00:14:49.149 that they will pay for because it saves them 00:14:49.149 --> 00:14:52.830 money. And what will happen is a client will 00:14:52.830 --> 00:14:56.269 go to the doctor and get a diagnosis and a prescription 00:14:56.269 --> 00:15:01.360 and a way forward, but then they move on. And 00:15:01.360 --> 00:15:04.620 the coach will be with them through the behavior 00:15:04.620 --> 00:15:08.240 change. That's coaching in healthcare. One of 00:15:08.240 --> 00:15:12.179 the foundations of coaching is that the person 00:15:12.179 --> 00:15:17.179 you're working with, you know, as a coach, that 00:15:17.179 --> 00:15:22.240 they know somewhere their best next step. Well, 00:16:21.509 --> 00:16:23.230 so the first thing that I would do when you described 00:16:23.230 --> 00:16:26.289 that, I was thinking, you don't go in with a 00:16:26.289 --> 00:16:29.590 cookie cutter solution. The first thing you would 00:16:29.590 --> 00:16:33.870 go in is set up conversations and find out how 00:16:33.870 --> 00:16:36.090 people are feeling. Take the pulse of the actual 00:16:36.090 --> 00:16:38.710 individuals and find out what they are experiencing 00:16:38.710 --> 00:16:42.950 and what they need. And then with that information, 00:16:43.110 --> 00:16:45.309 and that would take time, that takes time.
