And just like Disney's Beauty and 00:04:38.600 --> 00:04:40.279 the Beast is completely different from the tragic 00:04:40.279 --> 00:04:43.439 true story of the couple behind the tail as, 00:04:43.459 --> 00:04:49.129 you know, as old as time in Jim, but Batista's 00:04:49.129 --> 00:04:52.910 Basil's Sleeping Beauty story, originally called 00:04:52.910 --> 00:04:57.129 Sun, Moon, and Talia in 1634, the Wicked Queen, 00:04:57.310 --> 00:04:59.550 who became known as Maleficent, which is the 00:04:59.550 --> 00:05:02.250 whole point of that movie, is actually the hero's 00:05:02.250 --> 00:05:05.670 wife. Irony, huh? And hearing her side of the 00:05:05.670 --> 00:05:07.529 story will kind of make you want to root for 00:05:07.529 --> 00:05:10.629 her rather than the princess, or the prince for 00:05:10.629 --> 00:05:15.649 that matter. Anyway, Disney... wasn't the first 00:05:15.649 --> 00:05:17.689 to be deeply disturbed by the original Sleeping 00:05:17.689 --> 00:05:20.290 Beauty story. At the end of the 16th century, 00:05:20.410 --> 00:05:23.769 the Mother Goose Tales told Charles Perrault's 00:05:23.769 --> 00:05:26.490 Sleeping Beauty story, which took out the creepy 00:05:26.490 --> 00:05:30.810 sexual assault bit, including when Sleeping Beauty 00:05:30.810 --> 00:05:35.129 was stripped naked in front of her assaulter's 00:05:35.129 --> 00:05:39.990 wife. In retrospect, a lot of people preferred 00:05:39.990 --> 00:05:43.500 the Mother Goose version. And having just said 00:05:43.500 --> 00:05:46.540 that, it is pretty bad. Now, once you've read 00:05:46.540 --> 00:05:48.959 the original Sleeping Beauty, you'll never be 00:05:48.959 --> 00:05:50.519 able to look at the Disney version again. So 00:05:50.519 --> 00:05:53.660 again, I've just said this, but I haven't even 00:05:53.660 --> 00:05:56.879 gotten into the story yet. Now, everyone knows the story of Sleeping 00:06:42.939 --> 00:06:45.899 Beauty. It's a princess who is cursed to sleep 00:06:45.899 --> 00:06:49.100 until her true love wakes her with a kiss. In 00:06:49.100 --> 00:06:52.160 addition to the love story, there's also spindles, 00:06:52.160 --> 00:06:55.980 fairies, briar patches, apparently an evil witch 00:06:55.980 --> 00:06:59.220 who can turn into a dragon. Nice touch, Disney. 00:07:00.120 --> 00:07:02.079 But the original version of Sleeping Beauty's 00:07:02.079 --> 00:07:04.139 story is very different from the classic Disney 00:07:04.139 --> 00:07:07.259 movie that everyone is very familiar with. The 00:07:07.259 --> 00:07:08.980 original version of Sleeping Beauty was written 00:07:08.980 --> 00:07:13.259 down by an Italian by the name of Gian Battista 00:07:13.259 --> 00:07:18.379 Basile, who... published a book called The Tale 00:07:18.379 --> 00:07:24.819 of Tales in 1634. Very, very popular book, by 00:07:24.819 --> 00:07:29.660 the way. It contained 50 different stories, including 00:07:29.660 --> 00:07:32.779 early versions of Rapunzel, Cinderella, Snow 00:07:32.779 --> 00:07:35.160 White, and Sleeping Beauty, which we'll cover 00:07:35.160 --> 00:07:40.139 all the others in another podcast. The last of 00:07:40.139 --> 00:07:44.540 which is called The Sun, Moon, and Talia. Now, 00:07:44.560 --> 00:07:48.139 Bazil's book, was used by Charlotte Peralt in 00:07:48.139 --> 00:07:51.060 the late 17th century when he wrote Mother Goose 00:07:51.060 --> 00:07:54.439 Tales, which is by the Brothers Grimm in the 00:07:54.439 --> 00:07:57.920 19th century. But, Basil's version of Sleeping 00:07:57.920 --> 00:08:02.279 Beauty is much, much darker than the Disney version. 00:08:02.540 --> 00:08:04.500 Let me go ahead and say that right now. At last, the king 00:08:41.159 --> 00:08:46.240 finds Sleeping Beauty, nicknamed Talia, in Basil's 00:08:46.240 --> 00:08:49.179 story, who is lying on a bed, deeply asleep. 00:08:49.919 --> 00:08:53.639 And then the story takes a very, very disturbing 00:08:53.639 --> 00:09:00.720 turn. How do I put this? A quote from the book 00:09:00.720 --> 00:09:05.840 is this. Crying aloud, the king beheld her charms 00:09:05.840 --> 00:09:08.720 and felt his blood course hotly through his veins. 00:09:08.899 --> 00:09:12.519 He lifted her in his arms and carried her to 00:09:12.519 --> 00:09:15.500 a bed where he gathered the first fruits of love. 00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:20.840 AKA, he raped her. Apparently, sleeping women 00:09:20.840 --> 00:09:28.419 were a huge turn on for the king. I'm not even 00:09:28.419 --> 00:09:30.559 going to tell you how disturbed that sounds. 00:09:32.890 --> 00:09:36.009 Anyway, as if the king raping a sleeping stranger 00:09:36.009 --> 00:09:38.850 wasn't disturbing enough, after he has sex with 00:09:38.850 --> 00:09:41.870 the sleeping beauty, the king goes home and for 00:09:41.870 --> 00:09:45.350 a time thought no more about this incident. Apparently, 00:09:45.389 --> 00:09:47.529 the king didn't think it was odd to find a sleeping 00:09:47.529 --> 00:09:50.629 woman abandoned in a castle, and clearly he had 00:09:50.629 --> 00:09:52.950 no reservations about ditching her after raping 00:09:52.950 --> 00:09:56.049 her whatsoever. When the king gathered the first 00:09:56.049 --> 00:09:58.250 fruits of love from sleeping beauty, he apparently 00:09:58.250 --> 00:10:02.129 left something behind. Nine months later, Sleeping 00:10:02.129 --> 00:10:04.389 Beauty gives birth to two children, a boy and 00:10:04.389 --> 00:10:09.169 a girl, while she's still asleep. Ugh. We're not done yet. However, in the Disney Sleeping 00:13:54.779 --> 00:13:58.019 Beauty version, Maleficent is a self -proclaimed 00:13:58.019 --> 00:14:02.100 mistress of evil. She's the one who curses baby 00:14:02.100 --> 00:14:05.059 Aurora with the threat of a spindle, and she's 00:14:05.059 --> 00:14:06.879 the one who builds the spindle that ultimately 00:14:06.879 --> 00:14:10.230 puts... Sleeping Beauty to sleep. It is because 00:14:10.230 --> 00:14:13.570 of Maleficent that Aurora's parents send her 00:14:13.570 --> 00:14:15.809 off to be raised with the fairies in the woods. 00:14:16.470 --> 00:14:18.769 Maleficent transforms into a dragon to fight 00:14:18.769 --> 00:14:21.789 Prince Philip when he tries to save Aurora's 00:14:21.789 --> 00:14:24.669 life.
