She starts 00:01:18.030 --> 00:01:20.769 by telling the story of an unnamed protagonist 00:01:20.769 --> 00:01:24.109 in the Old Testament and she titled her the woman 00:01:24.109 --> 00:01:29.349 of Shunem. Did she say Shunem? One day the prophet 00:01:29.349 --> 00:01:33.329 Elisha was passing through Shunem and we read 00:01:33.329 --> 00:01:35.689 that there was a great woman and she invited 00:01:35.689 --> 00:01:39.030 him to eat bread. And so it was that as oft as 00:01:39.030 --> 00:01:42.390 he passed by, he turned in to eat bread. That 00:01:42.390 --> 00:01:45.189 was the beginning of this great talk, Amy. Somebody walking by and she had something 00:03:08.930 --> 00:03:11.150 to offer and so she invited that in and then 00:03:11.150 --> 00:03:14.830 once he was in there, something changed within 00:03:14.830 --> 00:03:17.310 her. She recognized something different and she 00:03:17.310 --> 00:03:19.810 received a testimony through what I can only 00:03:19.810 --> 00:03:22.210 imagine was the Holy Ghost by listening carefully 00:03:22.210 --> 00:03:24.909 to what the words were being spoken by this man, 00:03:25.050 --> 00:03:29.849 Elisha. Remember, there's no pictures at this 00:03:29.849 --> 00:03:32.409 time. So it's hard to recognize prophets by just 00:03:32.409 --> 00:03:34.849 a space. It's not like, oh, look, that's a guy. 00:03:38.430 --> 00:03:41.569 Again, parallel to today, we have an opportunity 00:03:41.569 --> 00:03:44.229 to listen to President Oaks and we, for ourselves, 00:03:44.490 --> 00:03:46.250 can perceive to the Holy Ghost that he's our 00:03:46.250 --> 00:03:48.509 prophet today, a mouthpiece for the Lord, and 00:03:48.509 --> 00:03:50.830 we each get to gain our own testimony of this 00:03:50.830 --> 00:03:55.139 truth. how the Lord works in that way. That just 00:03:55.139 --> 00:03:58.340 because we have a testimony of prophets, it's 00:03:58.340 --> 00:04:00.240 our opportunity each time that we're getting 00:04:00.240 --> 00:04:02.879 a new prophet to have that reaffirmed to us. 00:04:03.259 --> 00:04:05.639 And I think it comes a bit easier now that for 00:04:05.639 --> 00:04:08.919 me, I'm not speaking for everybody. I grew up 00:04:08.919 --> 00:04:11.340 with President Hinckley. He was the prophet of 00:04:11.340 --> 00:04:15.990 my youth. And I think he was so well suited for 00:04:15.990 --> 00:04:18.269 these, I don't know what, you know, older generations 00:04:18.269 --> 00:04:20.509 thought about him, if they're like, you know, 00:04:20.589 --> 00:04:22.529 however they had their feelings. But as a child 00:04:22.529 --> 00:04:25.670 growing up, I loved him with all of my heart. 00:04:26.149 --> 00:04:30.149 And it wasn't super hard to take President Monsignor, 00:04:30.189 --> 00:04:31.569 but I kind of always thought of him as a little 00:04:31.569 --> 00:04:34.610 bit of a jokester. And so what I saw when the 00:04:34.610 --> 00:04:37.949 mantle of prophethood came to him is that fun 00:04:37.949 --> 00:04:42.149 is paired with seriousness. I mean, I'm sure he was doing 00:04:48.170 --> 00:04:50.790 such amazing things. Like looking at his biography, 00:04:50.949 --> 00:04:53.370 it's like, yeah, he was well suited for the job. 00:04:53.389 --> 00:04:56.069 He was raised up by, you know, on the shoulders 00:04:56.069 --> 00:04:59.970 of these men. He was just totally primed and 00:04:59.970 --> 00:05:01.769 prepared for it, but didn't really think much 00:05:01.769 --> 00:05:04.670 of him. And I definitely got a witness from, 00:05:04.670 --> 00:05:07.410 you know, when I joined Insulam Assembly to sustain 00:05:07.410 --> 00:05:09.829 him as a prophet, like, without a doubt. It was 00:05:09.829 --> 00:05:15.240 there. Absolutely. took nothing to know that 00:05:15.240 --> 00:05:20.560 the words, President Oakes is, like, what's interesting 00:05:20.560 --> 00:05:23.279 is what he's speaking, you know, as an assignment, 00:05:23.399 --> 00:05:25.759 as an apostle, that is a different thing than 00:05:25.759 --> 00:05:28.300 when he starts speaking when the mantle of prophethood 00:05:28.300 --> 00:05:30.980 is on him, that he does understand all of a sudden 00:05:30.980 --> 00:05:33.879 that it's like he is speaking for God as his 00:05:33.879 --> 00:05:36.910 mouthpiece. you listen a little bit differently. 00:05:37.269 --> 00:05:41.569 I do. It's pretty accurate. But I love how it 00:05:41.569 --> 00:05:44.329 didn't take like... it didn't take like, oh, 00:05:44.370 --> 00:05:46.870 can I accept him as my prophet? It was just as 00:05:46.870 --> 00:05:49.089 I asked the question and it was just as natural 00:05:49.089 --> 00:05:52.589 as my next breath. That's really good. And it 00:05:52.589 --> 00:05:55.250 is still great to ask just because to have a 00:05:55.250 --> 00:05:58.129 witness is really important. The Lord wants each 00:05:58.129 --> 00:06:00.149 of us to have our own divine witness. We don't 00:06:00.149 --> 00:06:03.310 just follow anything blindly. Then she says, 00:06:03.430 --> 00:06:05.250 the story does not end there. One day the woman 00:06:05.250 --> 00:06:07.350 said to her husband, let us make a little chamber 00:06:07.350 --> 00:06:09.850 and let us set for him there a bed and a table 00:06:09.850 --> 00:06:13.069 and a stool and a candlestick. I love it. Let's 00:06:13.069 --> 00:06:15.350 make him home. This is so you. You would have 00:06:15.350 --> 00:06:18.129 done this. And it shall be when he comes to us 00:06:18.129 --> 00:06:20.829 that he shall turn in. The faithful woman was 00:06:20.829 --> 00:06:22.910 willing to build a room in her house so that 00:06:22.910 --> 00:06:25.209 the prophet passing through the city would have 00:06:25.209 --> 00:06:29.529 a place to stay. Love it. Feels like not an analogy, 00:06:30.269 --> 00:06:33.050 not a parable. Like she made a place for the 00:06:33.050 --> 00:06:35.819 prophet in her home. At this point, we agree 00:06:35.819 --> 00:06:38.000 that she knows that it's a prophet of God, right? 00:06:38.439 --> 00:06:41.720 So rather than just, you know, come in and sup 00:06:41.720 --> 00:06:43.160 with me, have a little piece of bread and then 00:06:43.160 --> 00:06:46.620 you're on your way, like... be here with us always. 00:06:47.279 --> 00:06:50.060 So, powerful lessons for our day from this experience. 00:06:50.180 --> 00:06:52.740 The Lord testified to the woman of Shenum that 00:06:52.740 --> 00:06:55.319 Elisha was a prophet of God, and she acted by 00:06:55.319 --> 00:06:58.079 opening her home to receive Him, just like we 00:06:58.079 --> 00:07:00.360 too can receive that personal testimony of God's 00:07:00.360 --> 00:07:02.639 prophet today. Open our hearts, open our minds, 00:07:02.800 --> 00:07:04.800 open our homes to the message that Heavenly Father 00:07:04.800 --> 00:07:07.079 has for us in these latter days. I love that, 00:07:07.240 --> 00:07:10.379 Abby. And then she says, Dear Youth, and of course, 00:07:11.060 --> 00:07:13.560 Everyone who's listening to this, she says, I 00:07:13.560 --> 00:07:16.199 invite you to ask yourself this question. Do 00:07:16.199 --> 00:07:20.019 I have a personal testimony of God's living prophets? 00:07:21.100 --> 00:07:23.160 And then she says, I'll start at the beginning. 00:07:23.199 --> 00:07:25.860 What is a prophet? A prophet is a man whom God 00:07:25.860 --> 00:07:27.639 has called to speak for him. There are prophets 00:07:27.639 --> 00:07:29.560 on the earth today, just as there were in ancient 00:07:29.560 --> 00:07:32.860 times. And then she says prophets and seers are 00:07:32.860 --> 00:07:35.540 also revelators. Oh, sorry. Prophets and seers 00:07:35.540 --> 00:07:40.410 and revelators. Yeah, that means they can see 00:07:40.410 --> 00:07:43.029 what others cannot see and they can prophesy 00:07:43.029 --> 00:07:45.290 of future events They can also prepare us for 00:07:45.290 --> 00:07:47.990 calamities prophets receive commandments and 00:07:47.990 --> 00:07:52.050 revelations from God Prophets also proclaim the 00:07:52.050 --> 00:07:54.470 gospel of Jesus Christ their inspired teachers 00:07:54.470 --> 00:07:57.889 and their messengers to God to everyone on the 00:07:57.889 --> 00:08:00.449 earth It's important to know, you know, we accept 00:08:00.449 --> 00:08:03.490 him as our prophet, but you know, just because 00:08:03.490 --> 00:08:06.939 people don't know you know, prophets exist in 00:08:06.939 --> 00:08:09.439 our day. He is still a prophet for the world. 00:08:10.680 --> 00:08:12.819 Each member of the First Presidency and Quorum 00:08:12.819 --> 00:08:15.360 of the Twelve is also considered, in their own 00:08:15.360 --> 00:08:18.199 right, a prophet, a seer, a revelator. I like 00:08:18.199 --> 00:08:20.560 that reminder. Serving as a council under the 00:08:20.560 --> 00:08:22.420 Lord's direction, they have the authority to 00:08:22.420 --> 00:08:24.279 declare and interpret doctrine and establish 00:08:24.279 --> 00:08:27.339 policy for His church. And we know that they 00:08:27.339 --> 00:08:30.379 carefully pray and deliberate for decisions that 00:08:30.379 --> 00:08:33.850 the Quorums must be unanimous in their. decisions. 00:08:34.029 --> 00:08:36.049 And in this way, the Lord assures us that His 00:08:36.049 --> 00:08:40.169 will will be done. I love it knowing like, sometimes 00:08:40.169 --> 00:08:43.029 they come into it with very differing opinions. 00:08:43.149 --> 00:08:46.549 For sure. They speak their piece, and then they 00:08:46.549 --> 00:08:48.429 let the Spirit kind of distill on the decision. 00:08:48.889 --> 00:08:52.029 And then they get, you know, unanimity. I'm sure it's been described before at 00:08:57.610 --> 00:09:01.299 different times, when he said, I want to know 00:09:01.299 --> 00:09:03.600 what my counselors think. I want to know what 00:09:03.600 --> 00:09:05.960 all the 12 apostles think. I ask for their input. 00:09:06.860 --> 00:09:08.820 Think about all of their life experience and 00:09:08.820 --> 00:09:11.620 the different aspects that they come to that 00:09:11.620 --> 00:09:13.519 council with. And it's supposed to be that way, 00:09:13.679 --> 00:09:16.389 right? Everyone having different... coming with 00:09:16.389 --> 00:09:19.269 a different lens. I appreciate the way that Sister 00:09:19.269 --> 00:09:22.490 Spinaeus teaches the youth here, that each of 00:09:22.490 --> 00:09:24.590 the Twelve's apostles, like we said, is a prophet, 00:09:24.690 --> 00:09:26.610 seer, and revelator. That's such a beautiful 00:09:26.610 --> 00:09:28.590 truth and just a great point to remember. So 00:09:28.590 --> 00:09:31.490 prophets testify of Christ, his existence, his 00:09:31.490 --> 00:09:33.769 ministry, and his divinity. From the Book of 00:09:33.769 --> 00:09:35.750 Mormon, these are some things that the prophets 00:09:35.750 --> 00:09:46.679 have said. Lamanite also testified that Jesus 00:09:46.679 --> 00:09:49.179 Christ is the Son of God, the Father of heaven 00:09:49.179 --> 00:09:51.740 and of earth, the creator of all things from 00:09:51.740 --> 00:09:54.460 the beginning. And then the prophet Moroni said, 00:09:54.840 --> 00:09:57.120 I have seen Jesus, and he hath talked with me 00:09:57.120 --> 00:09:59.539 face to face. When Christ visited the Nephites, 00:09:59.679 --> 00:10:01.559 one of the first things he did was call twelve 00:10:01.559 --> 00:10:04.100 apostles. And he said to the people, Blessed 00:10:04.100 --> 00:10:07.399 are ye if ye shall give heed unto the words of 00:10:07.399 --> 00:10:12.429 the twelve whom I have chosen. All of them. I 00:10:12.429 --> 00:10:14.129 was just thinking how powerful it is knowing 00:10:14.129 --> 00:10:15.970 that they sometimes come into these councils 00:10:15.970 --> 00:10:18.009 making decisions about things with differing 00:10:18.009 --> 00:10:22.350 opinions, but they all have been given this gift 00:10:22.350 --> 00:10:24.129 to be prophets, seers, and revelators. They do 00:10:24.129 --> 00:10:27.330 see things differently, see things forward, and 00:10:27.330 --> 00:10:29.769 that they then have to take the way that the 00:10:29.769 --> 00:10:32.830 Lord has shown them, this thing, this matter 00:10:32.830 --> 00:10:35.769 that they have to act on, and their life experience. 00:10:36.850 --> 00:10:40.669 Bring that to the table and then see how everybody's 00:10:40.669 --> 00:10:44.110 vision of what is to come Plays out in the decision 00:10:44.110 --> 00:10:45.870 that they're gonna make moving forward, right? 00:10:46.149 --> 00:10:48.009 I think that's pretty incredible. There's a few words for parents or 00:11:04.580 --> 00:11:06.179 other family members who are raising children. 00:11:06.600 --> 00:11:09.200 The Lord Himself taught Adam and Eve the truths 00:11:09.200 --> 00:11:11.159 of the plan of salvation. And then He said to 00:11:11.159 --> 00:11:13.539 them, I give unto you a commandment to teach 00:11:13.539 --> 00:11:17.320 these things freely unto your children. So, you 00:11:17.320 --> 00:11:19.240 know, Amy and I, even with our little eight year 00:11:19.240 --> 00:11:21.340 olds, you know, what does it mean that we feel 00:11:21.340 --> 00:11:25.519 like we can speak freely unto our children? Well, 00:11:25.539 --> 00:11:27.720 that can be words of the prophets, testimonies 00:11:27.720 --> 00:11:29.820 of Christ in His divinity, scripture stories 00:11:29.820 --> 00:11:32.340 that illustrate eternal principles. We can use 00:11:32.340 --> 00:11:34.500 conference talks that teach and inspire and point 00:11:34.500 --> 00:11:36.700 us to Jesus. And especially when we're thinking 00:11:36.700 --> 00:11:39.279 of ourselves and the things that we can do, the 00:11:39.279 --> 00:11:40.980 Spirit will prick us in one way. And when we 00:11:40.980 --> 00:11:42.600 have the prayer of one of our children or all 00:11:42.600 --> 00:11:45.019 of our children on our heart, when we're immersed 00:11:45.019 --> 00:11:48.179 in Come Follow Me, or listening to the words 00:11:48.179 --> 00:11:49.980 of the prophets through these conference talks, 00:11:50.100 --> 00:11:52.750 or looking at a scripture story with you know, 00:11:52.870 --> 00:11:55.350 the prayer of one of our children or all of our 00:11:55.350 --> 00:11:57.429 children on our hearts, the message that's going 00:11:57.429 --> 00:12:00.990 to come through will be unique, different each 00:12:00.990 --> 00:12:02.350 time. I like that, Abby. That's totally true. 00:12:03.409 --> 00:12:06.049 So just like we talked about, teach these things 00:12:06.049 --> 00:12:07.769 freely. What does it mean to teach freely? She said it's learning 00:12:10.289 --> 00:12:13.659 the truths of the gospel for ourselves. having 00:12:13.659 --> 00:12:16.179 a personal testimony of them, and then when it's 00:12:16.179 --> 00:12:18.039 part of our heart and our mind, then we share 00:12:18.039 --> 00:12:20.539 that knowledge with our children. And, you know, 00:12:20.700 --> 00:12:22.600 our children meaning, you know, the ones in our 00:12:22.600 --> 00:12:25.100 family, and for those who are teaching in church, 00:12:25.179 --> 00:12:27.240 you know, this extends to primary and youth and 00:12:27.240 --> 00:12:29.259 also to the adults. We're all children of God. 00:12:30.240 --> 00:12:34.129 But essentially she's saying it means... To teach 00:12:34.129 --> 00:12:36.610 freely means first get it into your heart, have 00:12:36.610 --> 00:12:38.590 it be part of you, then you share it. It is also 00:12:38.590 --> 00:12:41.710 promoting both formal and informal teaching moments, 00:12:42.110 --> 00:12:44.009 and it is living according to that knowledge 00:12:44.009 --> 00:12:46.830 and that testimony. Yeah. And it stood out to 00:12:46.830 --> 00:12:49.350 me when we were discussing that a couple of weeks 00:12:49.350 --> 00:12:51.350 ago, whenever that was, a couple of weeks back. 00:12:51.370 --> 00:12:56.669 And come follow me. how important it is to involve 00:12:56.669 --> 00:12:59.049 the Spirit in our teaching. So when you're studying 00:12:59.049 --> 00:13:01.409 for yourself, you say, enlighten me, open me 00:13:01.409 --> 00:13:03.070 up to the thing that I'm ready to learn. You 00:13:03.070 --> 00:13:05.230 have that thing learned. Then it does seem like 00:13:05.230 --> 00:13:07.809 opportunities come. Our kid will ask a question 00:13:07.809 --> 00:13:09.909 and the Spirit will bring to remembrance this 00:13:09.909 --> 00:13:11.230 thing that you've put in you. If you haven't 00:13:11.230 --> 00:13:13.169 put any knowledge in you, you don't have the 00:13:13.169 --> 00:13:16.330 knowledge to put back out. But when I read that, 00:13:16.389 --> 00:13:19.669 I was like, yeah, when there's a truth that needs 00:13:19.669 --> 00:13:22.509 to be taught and you hesitate for a moment, you're 00:13:22.509 --> 00:13:25.230 like, oh, I don't want to share that thing. it's 00:13:25.230 --> 00:13:29.570 going to hurt their feelings or whatever. I don't 00:13:29.570 --> 00:13:31.350 want to say whatever. I want to articulate what 00:13:31.350 --> 00:13:33.509 I'm trying to say. Sometimes when the spirit 00:13:33.509 --> 00:13:36.169 says, you need to share this thing and then we 00:13:36.169 --> 00:13:38.470 sit and we try to reason out of why we're not 00:13:38.470 --> 00:13:41.090 going to share it. That is us not sharing freely. 00:13:41.629 --> 00:13:44.389 I don't need to say exactly. I don't need to 00:13:44.389 --> 00:13:45.929 point out exactly what that thing is that we 00:13:45.929 --> 00:13:48.549 want to share. But if you've gone into the situation 00:13:48.549 --> 00:13:51.090 and you've said, I want an opportunity to share. 00:13:51.230 --> 00:13:53.600 I want an opportunity to testify. and the spirit 00:13:53.600 --> 00:13:56.539 pricks you to share something. Every thought 00:13:56.539 --> 00:13:59.120 that you have passed that impression to share 00:13:59.120 --> 00:14:02.159 is you binding your own tongue to something that 00:14:02.159 --> 00:14:04.559 he's already said. You've already involved me 00:14:04.559 --> 00:14:07.059 in asking what you should share and when, so 00:14:07.059 --> 00:14:09.299 now I told you to share it.
