We have the plan of salvation. 00:01:24.109 --> 00:01:27.629 Jesus Christ was chosen as our Savior. Lucifer 00:01:27.629 --> 00:01:30.400 chose to become Satan. opposing God's plan and 00:01:30.400 --> 00:01:33.560 seeking to destroy agency. He lines out 00:01:42.400 --> 00:01:45.060 the things that we know to be true, points us 00:01:45.060 --> 00:01:47.060 to the scriptures, and he's like, just to be 00:01:47.060 --> 00:01:49.219 sure, we're on the same page before I hit you 00:01:49.219 --> 00:01:54.060 with why it was such a good plan. Also, I've 00:01:54.060 --> 00:01:59.010 noticed in his talks, he's very clear about the 00:01:59.010 --> 00:02:01.829 fact that there were not two plans. There was 00:02:01.829 --> 00:02:05.170 God's plan, and it was opposed by Satan. Most important for 00:02:20.389 --> 00:02:22.569 spiritual growth is the requirement to choose 00:02:22.569 --> 00:02:25.550 between good and evil. Love that, too, that he kind of 00:03:14.310 --> 00:03:16.669 outlines again. We always say, you know, there's 00:03:16.669 --> 00:03:19.689 forgiveness for sins, forgiveness for repented 00:03:19.689 --> 00:03:22.110 sins. So when we bring the atonement into our 00:03:22.110 --> 00:03:24.569 lives and repent, that's when our sins are forgiven. 00:03:25.030 --> 00:03:27.689 That merciful and glorious atonement explains 00:03:27.689 --> 00:03:29.969 why faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is the first 00:03:29.969 --> 00:03:33.250 principle of the gospel. And 00:04:10.879 --> 00:04:13.439 it just reminds me that what power, through what 00:04:13.439 --> 00:04:15.960 power does this come? And of course, it's through 00:04:15.960 --> 00:04:18.920 Christ's atonement. Yes. So he kind of lays this 00:04:18.920 --> 00:04:21.959 landscape that overall, the plan is perfect because 00:04:21.959 --> 00:04:25.379 there is a savior for whatever, whatever challenges. 00:04:26.279 --> 00:04:29.079 are really going to strike us. And then he tries 00:04:29.079 --> 00:04:30.959 to go into his points of saying, like, keeps 00:04:30.959 --> 00:04:32.639 pointing us back to the Savior, like how the 00:04:32.639 --> 00:04:35.360 Savior's involved in step A, B, and C. So let's 00:04:35.360 --> 00:04:38.060 first talk about the light of Christ. He says, 00:04:38.279 --> 00:04:40.740 the Spirit of Christ is given to every man that 00:04:40.740 --> 00:04:43.939 he may know good from evil. Moroni 716. And I 00:04:43.939 --> 00:04:45.879 love that because this is the opportunity we 00:04:45.879 --> 00:04:48.000 have to see people, different walks of life. 00:04:48.180 --> 00:04:50.819 We don't share a similar religion. You can see 00:04:50.819 --> 00:04:53.819 when people have accepted Jesus Christ and they 00:04:53.819 --> 00:04:55.699 carry that light about them. That's awesome. 00:04:55.819 --> 00:04:59.279 It's a good starting place. Enlightenment is 00:04:59.279 --> 00:05:01.759 available to those who heed the Spirit, Doctrine 00:05:01.759 --> 00:05:07.860 and Covenants 8446. So, kids know. Kids know 00:05:07.860 --> 00:05:09.759 when they go through this thing that there's 00:05:09.759 --> 00:05:11.339 truth tellers or whatever, and then they go through 00:05:11.339 --> 00:05:13.160 a development stage where like they do something 00:05:13.160 --> 00:05:14.879 wrong, but they know that they have to tell a 00:05:14.879 --> 00:05:17.180 fib to cover because they know that that thing 00:05:17.180 --> 00:05:19.500 would get them in trouble. That, to me, is a 00:05:19.500 --> 00:05:22.339 piece of this because we innately know what's 00:05:22.339 --> 00:05:24.680 right and wrong. We don't have to always be told 00:05:24.680 --> 00:05:26.720 exactly. Or it's a good opportunity when you 00:05:26.720 --> 00:05:29.180 do those minor things as a little kid. Your parents 00:05:29.180 --> 00:05:30.439 are like, that wasn't the right thing to do, 00:05:30.540 --> 00:05:32.399 pinching your brother, stealing that piece of 00:05:32.399 --> 00:05:34.180 candy from the store, whatever, that there's 00:05:34.180 --> 00:05:37.220 opportunities for correction. But really, it 00:05:37.220 --> 00:05:40.100 resonates because you do know. Oh, that wasn't 00:05:40.100 --> 00:05:41.500 probably the best thing that I did. President Joseph Fielding 00:05:43.420 --> 00:05:45.459 Smith explained these scriptures, the Lord has 00:05:45.459 --> 00:05:47.560 not left men when they are born into this world 00:05:47.560 --> 00:05:49.740 helpless, groping to find the light and truth, 00:05:49.980 --> 00:05:52.379 but every man is born with the right to receive 00:05:52.379 --> 00:05:55.040 the guidance, the instruction, the counsel of 00:05:55.040 --> 00:05:58.040 the Spirit of Christ or truth of light. Yes. 00:05:58.879 --> 00:06:01.800 That takes us to our second help, which is commandments. 00:06:02.360 --> 00:06:04.300 Commandments to find the path our Heavenly Father 00:06:04.300 --> 00:06:06.600 has marked out for us to progress toward eternal 00:06:06.600 --> 00:06:08.980 life. People who imagine commandments as the 00:06:08.980 --> 00:06:12.779 way God decides who to punish fail to understand 00:06:12.779 --> 00:06:15.259 this purpose of God's loving plan of happiness. 00:06:15.439 --> 00:06:17.079 I think we talked about this actually in one 00:06:17.079 --> 00:06:19.720 of our last talks about it either being shackles 00:06:19.720 --> 00:06:21.980 or a help, and here he clearly outlines it's 00:06:21.980 --> 00:06:25.040 a help. Elder Oaks gives a reminder that commandments 00:06:25.040 --> 00:06:27.959 are not punitive, but serve as loving guidance. 00:06:28.519 --> 00:06:31.139 So a question here could be, how could our lives 00:06:31.139 --> 00:06:34.500 change if we viewed God's word in this way, meaning 00:06:34.500 --> 00:06:37.740 loving guidance rather than punishment? This 00:06:37.740 --> 00:06:39.459 question reminds me again of one of my favorite 00:06:39.459 --> 00:06:42.439 quotes by President Benson, when obedience to 00:06:42.439 --> 00:06:44.620 God's law ceases to be an irritant and becomes 00:06:44.620 --> 00:06:47.279 our quest, in that moment, God will endow us 00:06:47.279 --> 00:06:50.579 with power. I had to go back and look for that. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:53.279 And that's always been a favorite that has resonated 00:06:53.279 --> 00:06:56.639 with me. Elder Oaks ends by reminding each of 00:06:56.639 --> 00:06:58.720 us that our Heavenly Father desires all of his 00:06:58.720 --> 00:07:00.920 children to return to the celestial kingdom where 00:07:00.920 --> 00:07:03.620 God and our Savior reside, and also to have the 00:07:03.620 --> 00:07:06.379 kind of life that those who reside in that celestial 00:07:06.379 --> 00:07:08.660 glory. I think it was in this part of the talk 00:07:08.660 --> 00:07:11.399 that he said something like, covenants are a 00:07:11.399 --> 00:07:14.939 way to choose in advance to follow God. And I 00:07:14.939 --> 00:07:20.069 was like, boom, that's amazing. It is. That requires 00:07:20.069 --> 00:07:24.589 a lot of thought. I just loved it because people 00:07:24.589 --> 00:07:26.550 question why you're making these covens. Why 00:07:26.550 --> 00:07:29.670 would you want to get into this? Why would you 00:07:29.670 --> 00:07:32.310 want to saddle yourself with restrictions, but 00:07:32.310 --> 00:07:34.850 really just turning it on your head to say, I 00:07:34.850 --> 00:07:38.910 have this desire to abide with him and become 00:07:38.910 --> 00:07:41.930 like him. So this is the path that he's lined 00:07:41.930 --> 00:07:45.540 out and that you... I'm like excited to do it, 00:07:45.540 --> 00:07:48.040 like I'm telling you, I'm saying I want to covenant 00:07:48.040 --> 00:07:49.980 myself with you. I think as those challenges 00:07:49.980 --> 00:07:51.759 come up with life, he's like, remember, you've 00:07:51.759 --> 00:07:54.079 linked yourself with me to give you that extra, 00:07:54.279 --> 00:07:56.759 you know, what you said, the resistance that 00:07:56.759 --> 00:07:59.399 you need to these temptations. But if he just 00:07:59.399 --> 00:08:01.519 took away the temptations, that's like him taking 00:08:01.519 --> 00:08:05.019 away our agency. So it's a way to still have 00:08:05.019 --> 00:08:08.620 us experience this life, but with as much. help, 00:08:09.180 --> 00:08:12.279 possibly. Godly help is possible. Moves into 00:08:12.279 --> 00:08:15.040 the third point, in its ordinances and covenants. 00:08:15.500 --> 00:08:32.080 He says, says this, I like to think of the role 00:08:32.080 --> 00:08:34.200 of covenants as demonstrating that under God's 00:08:34.200 --> 00:08:36.279 plan, His highest blessings are given to those, 00:08:36.279 --> 00:08:39.600 oh, this is it, who promise in advance, I knew 00:08:39.600 --> 00:08:42.580 I wanted to say this before, His highest blessings 00:08:42.580 --> 00:08:45.000 are given to those who promise in advance to 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:46.820 keep certain commandments and who keep those 00:08:46.820 --> 00:08:52.779 promises. I will think of that line so many times. 00:08:52.779 --> 00:08:55.340 I will too. As I'm trying to explain to my own 00:08:55.340 --> 00:08:58.639 children, they definitely get ready. Like we 00:08:58.639 --> 00:09:01.159 did our back to school blessings and my little 00:09:01.159 --> 00:09:03.179 Lucy, she's seven and when her dad blessed her 00:09:03.179 --> 00:09:05.320 he said, you're preparing to make your baptismal 00:09:05.320 --> 00:09:08.080 covenants. Love that. It's funny to see like, 00:09:08.139 --> 00:09:10.480 some of them are kind of unsure about it. certain 00:09:10.480 --> 00:09:12.500 ages, like maybe have a fear of the water, don't 00:09:12.500 --> 00:09:14.600 really know what it's all about. And it's amazing, 00:09:14.700 --> 00:09:16.720 every time I've witnessed a child approach that 00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:19.919 age as they're preparing, they understand what 00:09:19.919 --> 00:09:24.120 baptism looks like. If I tried to get her ready 00:09:24.120 --> 00:09:25.740 to make temple covenants, I think that would 00:09:25.740 --> 00:09:28.639 be a stretch. But at this point in her life, 00:09:28.659 --> 00:09:30.740 that is exactly the covenant that she needs and 00:09:30.740 --> 00:09:32.899 the one that she is ready to make at this age 00:09:32.899 --> 00:09:35.240 that she's at. But, you know, on the same token, 00:09:35.259 --> 00:09:37.039 I have some older children and we are gearing 00:09:37.039 --> 00:09:39.529 toward making those temple covenants. I'm going 00:09:39.529 --> 00:09:41.710 to use that language. You don't have to make 00:09:41.710 --> 00:09:44.830 those covenants, but if you should look into 00:09:44.830 --> 00:09:47.309 them and should choose to do those things, there 00:09:47.309 --> 00:09:50.129 are a bucket load of blessings and promises for 00:09:50.129 --> 00:09:52.409 your willingness to say to the Lord, I do want 00:09:52.409 --> 00:09:54.269 to follow you and I do want to be on this path 00:09:54.269 --> 00:10:01.409 with you. Maybe we don't opt into the highest 00:10:01.409 --> 00:10:02.970 blessings and that's what this would look like. 00:10:02.970 --> 00:10:04.470 However, if you do want the highest blessings, 00:10:04.830 --> 00:10:06.610 they're available to you. And just like you said, Lucy, right 00:10:28.210 --> 00:10:31.580 now at her age, it is age appropriate for baptismal 00:10:31.580 --> 00:10:33.600 covenants, for the understanding, for the foundation 00:10:33.600 --> 00:10:36.399 to be laid. And the endowment doesn't come before 00:10:36.399 --> 00:10:38.500 that. The ceiling doesn't come before that. You 00:10:38.500 --> 00:10:40.299 know what I mean? Everything is really in order, 00:10:41.179 --> 00:10:44.139 and God talks to us and teaches us according 00:10:44.139 --> 00:10:46.240 to our understanding. Now, it's interesting to note that 00:11:24.580 --> 00:11:26.740 he breaks this into two sections, which I do 00:11:26.740 --> 00:11:29.879 love. First, it's the manifestations of the Holy 00:11:29.879 --> 00:11:34.620 Ghost. He says the scriptures include many descriptions 00:11:34.620 --> 00:11:37.100 of the manifestations of the Holy Ghost, such 00:11:37.100 --> 00:11:40.220 as a spiritual witness in response to an inquiry 00:11:40.220 --> 00:11:43.700 about the truth of the Book of Mormon. And manifestation 00:11:43.700 --> 00:11:46.100 is not to be confused with the gift of the Holy 00:11:46.100 --> 00:11:48.019 Ghost, which is conferred following baptism, 00:11:48.039 --> 00:11:49.980 like you said. Which I think he's just nodding 00:11:49.980 --> 00:11:52.240 back to. We would call this the light of Christ. 00:11:52.240 --> 00:11:54.779 Right! And he says, Joseph 00:13:45.139 --> 00:13:47.700 Smith's dedicatory prayer of the Kirtland Temple 00:13:47.700 --> 00:13:51.259 is a tutorial about how the temple spiritually 00:13:51.259 --> 00:13:54.039 empowers you and me. to meet the challenges of 00:13:54.039 --> 00:13:56.740 life in these last days. In this tutorial for 00:13:56.740 --> 00:13:59.940 us, I want it to be top of mind while I study 00:13:59.940 --> 00:14:02.320 other topics, right? So here's what the quote 00:14:02.320 --> 00:14:03.840 about the Holy Ghost comes in. Here's where it 00:14:03.840 --> 00:14:06.700 comes in.
