And if you 00:04:40.129 --> 00:04:45.290 go to Alma 36, in verse number 3, it says, Whosoever 00:04:45.290 --> 00:04:47.629 shall put their trust in God shall be supported 00:04:47.629 --> 00:04:50.329 in their trials, and their troubles, and their 00:04:50.329 --> 00:04:52.930 afflictions, and shall be lifted up at the last 00:04:52.930 --> 00:04:56.560 day. And then Alma says, I would not know, I 00:04:56.560 --> 00:04:59.300 know this of myself, if I had not been born of 00:04:59.300 --> 00:05:03.100 God, I should not have known these things. And 00:05:03.100 --> 00:05:07.319 so he talks about his experience of going from, 00:05:07.379 --> 00:05:09.860 in his own words, him and the sons of Mosiah 00:05:09.860 --> 00:05:13.879 being the vilest of sinners, to seeing the angel, 00:05:13.980 --> 00:05:17.019 the voice of thunder, and changing his life. 00:05:24.980 --> 00:05:27.980 big events take place with life changing things 00:05:27.980 --> 00:05:32.839 of such magnitude but in our lives it's small 00:05:32.839 --> 00:05:35.180 things that bring us closer to the Savior but 00:05:35.180 --> 00:05:40.779 Alma tells us that he knows that God loves him 00:05:40.779 --> 00:05:44.199 because of his trials that he was supported in 00:05:44.199 --> 00:05:46.879 so that's a good example That means God loves 00:05:46.879 --> 00:05:49.899 Amy extra right now. From the talk it said, When the focus 00:06:14.839 --> 00:06:17.379 of our lives is on Jesus Christ and His gospel, 00:06:17.540 --> 00:06:20.199 we can feel joy regardless of what is happening 00:06:20.199 --> 00:06:24.720 or not happening in our lives. And we just finished 00:06:24.720 --> 00:06:26.899 this weekend, we've been part of a stake conference, 00:06:27.220 --> 00:06:30.600 and that word joy was like popping out to me 00:06:30.600 --> 00:06:32.519 just in the very first hymn that we opened in 00:06:32.519 --> 00:06:36.000 the adult session. I thought, this is a dumb 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:37.519 thought, but I was like, if I have to get up 00:06:37.519 --> 00:06:40.259 and like, It's these guys that visit that could 00:06:40.259 --> 00:06:42.839 just pull anybody out of the stand. If I had 00:06:42.839 --> 00:06:45.620 to hop up and say something, I would talk about 00:06:45.620 --> 00:06:47.680 the joy that I find in the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:06:48.060 --> 00:06:50.839 That's so great, Abby. I'd be crying as I was 00:06:50.839 --> 00:06:54.160 talking about it, but I loved that this quote 00:06:54.160 --> 00:06:56.160 was part of this talk that we get to enjoy today 00:06:56.160 --> 00:06:58.220 just because it brought back the feelings and 00:06:58.220 --> 00:07:00.439 thoughts that I kind of float through my mind 00:07:00.439 --> 00:07:02.519 as I was considering that word joy. Men are that 00:07:02.519 --> 00:07:06.920 they might have joy. How that can mean, it's 00:07:06.920 --> 00:07:10.180 such a beautiful word to explain. Hard things 00:07:10.180 --> 00:07:12.879 can be happening, but you can still feel joy 00:07:12.879 --> 00:07:15.439 because of Jesus Christ. It's an amazing, powerful 00:07:15.439 --> 00:07:18.040 tool that we, especially as members of this church, 00:07:18.180 --> 00:07:21.220 get to learn about, get to experience, get to 00:07:21.220 --> 00:07:25.779 witness. And I was thinking of a few things. 00:07:26.360 --> 00:07:29.279 In our ward, or in our friend group, or just 00:07:29.279 --> 00:07:32.060 in this small circle of people, I listed a few 00:07:32.060 --> 00:07:34.220 things that we've experienced. We've had infant 00:07:34.220 --> 00:07:39.699 loss. death to cancer we had a friend's child 00:07:39.699 --> 00:07:42.920 caught in a food truck explosion and have to 00:07:42.920 --> 00:07:45.759 deal with burns over a good portion of her body 00:07:45.759 --> 00:07:49.579 um proceeding with grafting getting back to her 00:07:49.579 --> 00:07:52.540 health and the list could go on and on i could 00:07:52.540 --> 00:07:56.319 list all of these hard things but what i saw 00:07:56.319 --> 00:08:02.399 in each of those cases with these friends was 00:08:02.399 --> 00:08:07.329 how they made it through these instances. They 00:08:07.329 --> 00:08:10.089 could have chosen to go either way. They could 00:08:10.089 --> 00:08:13.050 have been angry about the circumstances, but 00:08:13.050 --> 00:08:16.430 they focused on Jesus Christ. And all of them 00:08:16.430 --> 00:08:20.250 were, they used this opportunity to testify of 00:08:20.250 --> 00:08:24.790 Christ more, to rely on His power. And yes, there's 00:08:24.790 --> 00:08:27.610 some sad outcomes, you know, losing babies, like 00:08:27.610 --> 00:08:30.889 that doesn't feel so happy. But through their 00:08:30.889 --> 00:08:32.929 testimony to me, because of the focus on the 00:08:32.929 --> 00:08:36.129 Savior, That's not the end of the story. And 00:08:36.129 --> 00:08:38.509 they're still able to find joy, joy in covenants, 00:08:38.509 --> 00:08:41.429 joy in, you know, what we have offered to us 00:08:41.429 --> 00:08:44.149 because of our Savior Jesus Christ. And so, just 00:08:44.149 --> 00:08:45.870 time after time, the Holy Ghost has testified 00:08:45.870 --> 00:08:49.929 to me the truthfulness of that. That despite, 00:08:50.330 --> 00:08:52.789 I'll just read the quote again, when the focus 00:08:52.789 --> 00:08:54.769 of our lives is on Jesus Christ and His gospel, 00:08:54.889 --> 00:08:57.269 we can feel joy regardless of what is happening 00:08:57.269 --> 00:09:01.549 or not happening. Abby, this has me thinking 00:09:01.549 --> 00:09:04.289 of our listeners. You know, maybe you've experienced 00:09:04.289 --> 00:09:07.110 great tragedy in your own life or witnessed close 00:09:07.110 --> 00:09:09.210 friends like Abby talked about or family members 00:09:09.210 --> 00:09:12.350 navigate life's challenges. I hope there have 00:09:12.350 --> 00:09:16.070 been opportunities to reflect on how much focus 00:09:16.070 --> 00:09:19.230 was on Jesus Christ and His gospel. To ask, you 00:09:19.230 --> 00:09:21.070 know, did you experience joy in Christ regardless 00:09:21.070 --> 00:09:22.950 of what is happening or not happening in our 00:09:22.950 --> 00:09:25.309 lives? And it is true, like how you were saying, 00:09:25.450 --> 00:09:27.610 you know, with these things happening, you really 00:09:27.610 --> 00:09:30.879 can go either way. I almost don't fault people. 00:09:31.120 --> 00:09:33.460 No, I don't fault people when they like kind 00:09:33.460 --> 00:09:35.259 of give into it. And they're like, this is awful. 00:09:35.519 --> 00:09:37.100 This is horrible. I'm like, yeah, you're right. 00:09:37.159 --> 00:09:39.340 It is. You know what I mean? And they'll stand up 00:10:03.289 --> 00:10:06.309 and they'll say, you know, this diagnosis came 00:10:06.309 --> 00:10:08.730 or this situation happened and I blamed God and 00:10:08.730 --> 00:10:11.409 I was angry. And we'll explain to us. It's another 00:10:11.409 --> 00:10:14.909 way of testifying what the process felt like 00:10:14.909 --> 00:10:19.129 as they were trying to just blame him, not rely 00:10:19.129 --> 00:10:23.509 on him, be angry. And then whatever something 00:10:23.509 --> 00:10:26.389 happens, there's a turning point. That point, 00:10:26.470 --> 00:10:29.740 right? They focus on Jesus Christ. Are they immediately 00:10:29.740 --> 00:10:33.919 made better? Not often. But... No, it's usually 00:10:33.919 --> 00:10:38.179 a process. It's a long process. And there's so 00:10:38.179 --> 00:10:40.480 much growth and learning as we experience that. 00:10:40.679 --> 00:10:44.919 And so their full circle testimony is, I've... 00:10:45.880 --> 00:10:48.179 I got to feel what it felt like when I blamed 00:10:48.179 --> 00:10:50.159 him and didn't turn to him. I know as your 00:10:55.659 --> 00:10:59.179 friend, I know your story up to this point. I 00:10:59.179 --> 00:11:01.679 know my story. He's made things right that aren't 00:11:01.679 --> 00:11:06.080 right. He's given me joy even when in my perfect 00:11:06.080 --> 00:11:07.639 little boxes, things don't fit in my perfect 00:11:07.639 --> 00:11:09.419 little boxes. He still made it right for me. 00:11:09.440 --> 00:11:11.860 I have experienced the blessings of that promise 00:11:11.860 --> 00:11:15.590 in my life. A conference talk from the session 00:11:15.590 --> 00:11:18.830 of Elder Uchtdorf where he says, water the roots, 00:11:18.990 --> 00:11:21.490 not the branches, water the roots of Jesus Christ. 00:11:21.629 --> 00:11:24.330 And that's what's going to bless your life. But 00:11:24.330 --> 00:11:26.649 if we remember from the Doctrine and Covenants 00:11:26.649 --> 00:11:28.429 as we studied this year, the Savior says, look 00:11:28.429 --> 00:11:32.570 unto me in every thought, doubt not, fear not. 00:11:32.769 --> 00:11:35.070 And that's Doctrine and Covenants 636. We already 00:11:35.070 --> 00:11:39.970 studied that this year. And as we are rooted 00:11:39.970 --> 00:11:42.230 in the Savior and remember to look unto him in 00:11:42.230 --> 00:11:47.179 every thought, He will definitely be there. And 00:11:47.179 --> 00:11:49.779 as we mentioned, these people that we know and 00:11:49.779 --> 00:11:53.600 tragedies that they had in their life. But thinking 00:11:53.600 --> 00:11:56.360 about a familiar scripture that you guys talked 00:11:56.360 --> 00:11:59.799 about with blind Bartimaeus a while ago with 00:11:59.799 --> 00:12:02.379 his baker's coat. That was an awesome story. 00:12:02.460 --> 00:12:07.019 So good. But Bartimaeus knew who the Savior was. 00:12:07.259 --> 00:12:12.799 And as the Savior left Jericho, Bartimaeus knew 00:12:12.799 --> 00:12:15.259 that the Savior was there, and so he cried out. 00:12:15.659 --> 00:12:19.019 And the people told him, hold your tongue. Basically, 00:12:19.159 --> 00:12:23.820 don't say anything. Don't talk. Just stay inside 00:12:23.820 --> 00:12:27.820 of yourself. You're a beggar. Just accept your 00:12:27.820 --> 00:12:31.580 role and be a beggar. Know your place. Know your 00:12:31.580 --> 00:12:34.879 place, right? And Bartimaeus cried even louder. 00:12:36.250 --> 00:12:37.830 I know there's more for me. He's like, I know 00:12:37.830 --> 00:12:40.230 I'm ready to shove this off. He called the arise and blind Bartimaeus, 00:12:57.389 --> 00:13:00.690 cast away his garment, right? And then he goes 00:13:00.690 --> 00:13:04.159 to the Savior and the Savior asks, What would 00:13:04.159 --> 00:13:07.259 you have me that I should do for thee? And the 00:13:07.259 --> 00:13:09.519 obvious question, you know, that we all know, 00:13:09.600 --> 00:13:13.820 he's saying, I want to see you again. I didn't 00:13:13.820 --> 00:13:16.879 know if you noticed. But I love the Savior asking 00:13:16.879 --> 00:13:22.600 that question so that he can verbalize. This 00:13:22.600 --> 00:13:24.559 is what I'm bringing to you. This is what I need 00:13:24.559 --> 00:13:29.509 help with. I need help with this. Because the 00:13:29.509 --> 00:13:32.370 Savior didn't take the blindness as being an 00:13:32.370 --> 00:13:35.490 imperfection, because Bartimaeus' heart was where 00:13:35.490 --> 00:13:37.490 he wanted to be, and that's perfection, right? 00:13:37.690 --> 00:13:39.909 Yeah. Also, at this time when you told the story 00:13:39.909 --> 00:13:42.889 was the first time I realized, this is kind of 00:13:42.889 --> 00:13:45.649 humorous, but the Lord sees us fully. He sees 00:13:45.649 --> 00:13:47.830 every imperfection we have. He's just asking, 00:13:47.889 --> 00:13:49.929 what do you want to work on right now? Like a 00:13:49.929 --> 00:13:52.850 good plastic surgeon, what are you here for today? 00:13:53.370 --> 00:13:56.029 We're like, duh, this is it. But to him, he's 00:13:56.029 --> 00:13:58.149 like, what is your desire? What are you going 00:13:58.149 --> 00:14:03.480 to work on? Love that. All of me. And immediately he receives his 00:15:11.740 --> 00:15:14.860 sight. And then from that point, Bartimaeus followed 00:15:14.860 --> 00:15:18.379 Jesus in the way. He didn't depart, right? He 00:15:18.379 --> 00:15:20.960 continued to make those daily steps, looking 00:15:20.960 --> 00:15:25.230 unto him in every thought. not doubting that 00:15:25.230 --> 00:15:27.809 the Lord would heal him. I love the story of 00:15:27.809 --> 00:15:30.309 Bartimaeus because I felt like when we hashed 00:15:30.309 --> 00:15:33.129 it out the first time, it was like Bartimaeus 00:15:33.129 --> 00:15:36.370 could see Jesus Christ in his blindness.
