It 00:00:52.090 --> 00:01:03.719 says this, It went to Achish, I think, maybe. 00:01:04.120 --> 00:01:07.980 We're going to go with that. Achish, the king 00:01:07.980 --> 00:01:12.579 of Gath. King of Gath. Now David, right, he was 00:01:12.579 --> 00:01:15.560 known throughout history as the greatest king 00:01:15.560 --> 00:01:18.780 for God's people, right? A man after God's own 00:01:18.780 --> 00:01:21.879 heart. He defeated Goliath as a young boy. Saul was supposed to be the 00:03:24.449 --> 00:03:26.909 big, mighty protector, and then all of a sudden 00:03:26.909 --> 00:03:30.889 David comes in and saves the day, you could say. 00:03:32.030 --> 00:03:35.169 And he takes out Goliath, runs the Philistines 00:03:35.169 --> 00:03:38.430 out. He does all kinds of conquest, and then 00:03:38.430 --> 00:03:42.110 all of a sudden Saul gets very jealous. Starts 00:03:42.110 --> 00:03:44.270 trying to kill David. Had several attempts on 00:03:44.270 --> 00:03:47.710 his life, we know from the Word. And here he 00:03:47.710 --> 00:03:50.840 is, he's running. As far as he can away from 00:03:50.840 --> 00:03:53.439 Saul, because Saul just tried to kill him, he's 00:03:53.439 --> 00:03:55.699 out in the wilderness. And, you know, it must 00:03:55.699 --> 00:04:00.360 be pretty bad for you to return to Gath, right? 00:04:00.699 --> 00:04:03.960 This is one of the five main Philistine territories. 00:04:04.740 --> 00:04:07.520 And also, this is where you say, Goliath, he 00:04:07.520 --> 00:04:09.919 was from the hometown. He's 00:04:26.319 --> 00:04:30.519 decided to flee, go into the enemy camp with 00:04:30.519 --> 00:04:33.180 the sword that he defeated their prize giant. 00:04:34.560 --> 00:04:37.379 Mind you, this is the same sword that he chopped 00:04:37.379 --> 00:04:40.339 the giant's head off with. They're recognizing him 00:05:05.610 --> 00:05:09.029 as the king. Right? Is this not David, the king 00:05:09.029 --> 00:05:12.000 of the land? Did they not sing of him to one 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:15.180 another in dances, saying, Saul has slain his 00:05:15.180 --> 00:05:23.100 thousands, and David his ten thousands? Get into 00:05:23.100 --> 00:05:26.040 David's shoes a little bit, what all of a sudden 00:05:26.040 --> 00:05:29.379 that happened. And as we read, we see what in 00:05:29.379 --> 00:05:33.100 verse 12, Now David, listen, took these words 00:05:33.100 --> 00:05:41.170 to heart. It says that he... Took them, he held 00:05:41.170 --> 00:05:45.129 them, and what happened? He was very much afraid. 00:05:47.370 --> 00:05:53.629 Very much afraid of the king of Gath. All of 00:05:53.629 --> 00:05:55.870 a sudden, fear gripped his heart. Now, he was 00:05:55.870 --> 00:05:59.029 already running away from Saul. He was already 00:05:59.029 --> 00:06:01.689 feeling that pressure, that anxiety of what's 00:06:01.689 --> 00:06:05.149 happening. Now, all of a sudden, they've spotted 00:06:05.149 --> 00:06:08.689 him. He's caught. He's in a foreign city in the 00:06:08.689 --> 00:06:11.769 enemy camp, and he's caught, and fear just comes 00:06:11.769 --> 00:06:15.170 all over him. And how many of you know when you 00:06:15.170 --> 00:06:18.509 get really scared, you start acting irrationally, 00:06:18.529 --> 00:06:22.930 right? Sense kind of gets thrown out the window, 00:06:22.990 --> 00:06:25.009 and you just kind of grab for like whatever. 00:06:26.540 --> 00:06:30.019 We keep reading, so he changed David. He's hiding out in enemy 00:06:53.199 --> 00:06:56.990 territory. He's alone now. He's desperate. He's 00:06:56.990 --> 00:07:00.230 afraid. And we find out as we read the story 00:07:00.230 --> 00:07:02.470 that he just barely escapes. Like, he's no 00:07:06.850 --> 00:07:11.029 threat to us. Just let him leave, right? I just 00:07:11.029 --> 00:07:12.990 feel bad about this. So they closed him outside 00:07:12.990 --> 00:07:17.509 the gate, and he escaped. But listen, escape, 00:07:17.689 --> 00:07:22.170 though, is not always deliverance. He escaped 00:07:22.170 --> 00:07:25.509 his problem, this present problem, but still 00:07:25.509 --> 00:07:27.910 there was something internally that needed to 00:07:27.910 --> 00:07:32.230 be dealt with. But, you know, he could have also 00:08:52.690 --> 00:08:57.529 interpreted the circumstance as a sign that God 00:08:57.529 --> 00:09:01.649 had abandoned him. I don't know about you, but 00:09:01.649 --> 00:09:05.649 sometimes the way you see what you went through 00:09:05.649 --> 00:09:12.019 is different than the way God sees it. And often 00:09:12.019 --> 00:09:17.559 we look at our circumstance and we allow it to 00:09:17.559 --> 00:09:24.039 define our view of what God did or what he hasn't 00:09:24.039 --> 00:09:26.240 done or all those kind of things. We look at 00:09:26.240 --> 00:09:31.240 our circumstance as an indication. We interpret 00:09:31.240 --> 00:09:34.740 it as, man, God has abandoned me. I mean, just 00:09:34.740 --> 00:09:37.720 think about David. Think about what's going on. 00:09:39.259 --> 00:09:41.179 Supposedly supposed to be the king. God has already 00:09:41.179 --> 00:09:43.840 given him this promise, this great promise in 00:09:43.840 --> 00:09:46.480 his life, and now he's running for his life. 00:09:47.080 --> 00:09:53.100 No one's with him. He's just abandoned. Just 00:09:53.100 --> 00:09:55.899 seems helpless and hopeless. He could have rehearsed all 00:10:41.759 --> 00:10:45.419 his troubles and all the whys and why did this 00:10:45.419 --> 00:10:53.720 happen? Oh, why, why, why? But Psalms 34 gives 00:10:53.720 --> 00:10:57.240 us David's response. And that's what we're going 00:10:57.240 --> 00:10:59.620 to be looking at today. So turn in your Bibles 00:10:59.620 --> 00:11:01.820 if you have Psalms 34, but we're going to read 00:11:01.820 --> 00:11:05.950 it all together. And it's interesting, the beginning 00:11:05.950 --> 00:11:10.850 of Psalms tells us when David wrote this psalm. 00:11:10.950 --> 00:11:14.450 It lays it out, a psalm of David when he pretended 00:11:14.450 --> 00:11:18.450 madness before Abimelech, who drove him away 00:11:18.450 --> 00:11:22.309 and he departed. Now, I had to look this up because 00:11:22.309 --> 00:11:25.330 I was like, Achish and Abimelech, like, is that 00:11:25.330 --> 00:11:28.110 the same thing? But Abimelech is a royal title, 00:11:28.210 --> 00:11:32.379 a name used for kings. And then the name Akish 00:11:32.379 --> 00:11:36.080 here is the name of Gath's king, right? So it's 00:11:36.080 --> 00:11:39.639 referring to this time. And David's response 00:11:39.639 --> 00:11:42.940 is very profound. Let's read it together. He 00:11:42.940 --> 00:11:48.600 says this, I will bless the Lord at all times. 00:11:50.580 --> 00:11:56.259 His praise shall continually be in my mouth. 00:11:58.279 --> 00:12:03.580 My soul. Shall make its boast in the Lord. The 00:12:03.580 --> 00:12:08.779 humble shall hear of it. And be glad. Oh magnify 00:12:08.779 --> 00:12:13.779 the Lord with me. He had every right to magnify the problem, 00:13:07.009 --> 00:13:10.490 the fear, and the circumstances, or he could 00:13:10.490 --> 00:13:14.990 magnify his God. And instead of magnifying what 00:13:14.990 --> 00:13:18.669 was against him, he magnified the one who was 00:13:18.669 --> 00:13:27.029 for him. I had that visual of a magnifying glass, 00:13:27.129 --> 00:13:29.110 and when you think about it, a magnifying glass 00:13:29.110 --> 00:13:32.350 does not change the size of something, the size 00:13:32.350 --> 00:13:35.450 of the object.
