And 00:00:49.289 --> 00:00:52.170 did you know as a Christian, you can pray and 00:00:52.170 --> 00:00:56.619 it'd be powerless, okay? That's what we've been 00:00:56.619 --> 00:00:58.759 talking about. We looked at what prayer is and 00:00:58.759 --> 00:01:00.960 what prayer is not. I'm not going to do much 00:01:00.960 --> 00:01:04.219 recap. God just don't want you just to acknowledge 00:03:38.210 --> 00:03:40.750 like who you're praying to and then give him 00:03:40.750 --> 00:03:43.110 a bunch of lists and instructions. See, we often 00:03:43.110 --> 00:03:47.610 want to pray at God, right? We're just praying 00:03:47.610 --> 00:03:51.430 at him. Kind of like I'm talking at you this 00:03:51.430 --> 00:03:56.150 morning, right? I'm in a position and I'm speaking 00:03:56.150 --> 00:03:59.590 to you based upon some knowledge, some information, 00:03:59.949 --> 00:04:02.949 right? And I'm sharing with you. Sometimes we 00:04:02.949 --> 00:04:06.599 treat God that way. Here's my understanding of 00:04:06.599 --> 00:04:09.080 the world around me. So I'm coming to you and 00:04:09.080 --> 00:04:10.919 I'm telling you and I'm telling you and I'm telling 00:04:10.919 --> 00:04:14.900 you. Bible says that he knows what you need before 00:04:14.900 --> 00:04:19.879 you even ask it. He knows what you need before 00:04:19.879 --> 00:04:26.339 you even come to him. So why do we pray? Often 00:04:26.339 --> 00:04:29.120 prayer is not at God. It shouldn't be at God. 00:04:29.259 --> 00:04:33.040 But prayer at its core is communicating with 00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:38.829 him. It involves him. It's a two -way street 00:04:38.829 --> 00:04:47.050 of open communication. Acts 17, 28, all the verses 00:04:47.050 --> 00:04:49.389 that I'm reading today are out of the New Living 00:04:49.389 --> 00:04:55.569 Translation. And in Acts 17, 28, it says this, 00:04:55.589 --> 00:04:59.670 for in him, everybody say in him. Be a little 00:04:59.670 --> 00:05:02.860 stronger, say in him. When we read these verses 00:05:02.860 --> 00:05:06.019 that are in him, through him, by him in scripture, 00:05:06.279 --> 00:05:08.699 they need to raise a red flag in us and we need 00:05:08.699 --> 00:05:10.879 to start paying attention. Because there's a 00:05:10.879 --> 00:05:12.639 lot of things and there's a lot of Christians 00:05:12.639 --> 00:05:17.379 living a life, you know, powerless life because 00:05:17.379 --> 00:05:19.560 they don't realize their position in Christ. 00:05:22.339 --> 00:05:26.339 For in him, listen to this, for in him, we, the 00:05:26.339 --> 00:05:31.819 church, say me, for in him, we live. and move 00:05:31.819 --> 00:05:36.399 and exist. I learned this in the New King James. 00:05:36.459 --> 00:05:38.420 So it's in him we live and move and have our 00:05:38.420 --> 00:05:40.560 being, right? Maybe you've heard it that way. 00:05:40.839 --> 00:05:45.660 For in him I live, in him I move, in him I exist. 00:05:45.699 --> 00:05:48.800 What does this mean? It's all grounded 00:06:17.079 --> 00:06:22.480 and founded in him. And listen, church, we got 00:06:22.480 --> 00:06:28.540 to start playing some game. When we're talking 00:06:28.540 --> 00:06:32.589 with God, right? We should expect to see some 00:06:32.589 --> 00:06:35.949 things. We should expect to see some change. 00:06:37.410 --> 00:06:40.410 Because without power, without demonstration, 00:06:40.589 --> 00:06:43.490 as we talked about the other week, without impact 00:06:43.490 --> 00:06:48.629 and answers, direction and real change, why are 00:06:48.629 --> 00:06:57.629 we praying? Growing up, I never knew like 00:07:02.310 --> 00:07:04.509 the boundary of like, oh, you're supposed to 00:07:04.509 --> 00:07:06.350 do this and then you're supposed to do this and 00:07:06.350 --> 00:07:08.490 kind of build things. Like the first time I was 00:07:08.490 --> 00:07:11.149 on a dirt bike, I was doing 50 miles an hour 00:07:11.149 --> 00:07:15.230 over jumps with my friends. That's just who I 00:07:15.230 --> 00:07:18.670 am. So we're just jumping in. I hope that's okay 00:07:18.670 --> 00:07:22.110 this morning. You good? You good? Let's continue 00:07:22.110 --> 00:07:26.269 on. Our prayer needs to be powerful. Demonstration 00:07:26.269 --> 00:07:29.410 needs to follow. Impact needs to happen. Answers. 00:07:29.730 --> 00:07:32.709 God wants to give you answers and direction and 00:07:32.709 --> 00:07:36.149 you and I to experience real change because we've 00:07:36.149 --> 00:07:38.730 been in the presence of the almighty King of 00:07:38.730 --> 00:07:44.129 Kings and Lord of Lords. Amen? So if we are genuinely 00:07:44.129 --> 00:07:47.329 communicating with God, we should expect to hear 00:07:47.329 --> 00:07:51.430 him. Shouldn't just be a one -way thing. In his 00:07:51.430 --> 00:07:55.199 presence, we should hear from him. We should 00:07:55.199 --> 00:08:02.199 be empowered. We should be challenged. He corrects 00:08:02.199 --> 00:08:05.259 those that he loves, right? So when we come to 00:08:05.259 --> 00:08:07.339 him, there should be some things that kind of 00:08:07.339 --> 00:08:09.959 the Holy Spirit kind of brings to our hearts 00:08:09.959 --> 00:08:12.339 and our attentions and kind of, you know, checks 00:08:12.339 --> 00:08:16.680 us on. Should challenge us. And also when we're 00:08:16.680 --> 00:08:19.040 down, when we're in his presence praying, guess 00:08:19.040 --> 00:08:23.990 what? He will encourage us. He's a great encourager. 00:08:27.170 --> 00:08:30.529 But you've got to listen. You've got to be still 00:08:30.529 --> 00:08:35.389 and know. Amen? When you're communicating with 00:08:35.389 --> 00:08:42.289 God, you should expect to get answers. Many of 00:08:42.289 --> 00:08:44.230 you want answers, but you're not willing to hear 00:08:44.230 --> 00:08:50.419 for them. When we're communicating with God, 00:08:50.460 --> 00:08:52.840 we should expect to get direction and we should 00:08:52.840 --> 00:08:56.139 expect to be changed. Leave change because we've 00:08:56.139 --> 00:09:03.240 been in his presence. And I want to give sort 00:09:03.240 --> 00:09:07.679 of the cause of why this happens, why the Christian 00:09:07.679 --> 00:09:11.460 sometimes experiences powerless prayer. Because 00:09:11.460 --> 00:09:13.879 if your prayers are not being answered, listen, 00:09:14.120 --> 00:09:21.350 it's not God's fault. It's not God's fault. It's 00:09:21.350 --> 00:09:26.629 ours. Let's explain that a little bit. It's either 00:09:26.629 --> 00:09:29.730 in our hearts, as we've seen, our hearts, our 00:09:29.730 --> 00:09:35.009 methods of prayer, or the content of our prayers. 00:09:35.870 --> 00:09:40.049 And they are originating in us instead of our 00:09:40.049 --> 00:09:45.710 position in Him. See... We got to drastically 00:09:45.710 --> 00:09:48.750 change our concept of what prayer looks like. 00:09:50.789 --> 00:09:55.090 Our prayers should not originate in us. Because 00:09:55.090 --> 00:09:57.289 you know what? Everything in you is not going 00:09:57.289 --> 00:10:01.429 to be enough to take care of you. Right? Why 00:10:01.429 --> 00:10:03.950 are we seeking a higher power if we're coming 00:10:03.950 --> 00:10:06.809 to him just expecting, you know, what I already 00:10:06.809 --> 00:10:15.909 know? Your prayers should originate in him. Amen. 00:10:16.409 --> 00:10:20.190 James 4, 2 through 3 says this, and the Bible's 00:10:20.190 --> 00:10:23.629 full of verses like this. Sometimes the Christian 00:10:23.629 --> 00:10:26.490 just kind of wants to like throw him to the side 00:10:26.490 --> 00:10:30.970 a little bit because our experience is different. 00:10:32.070 --> 00:10:35.250 But it's important not to do that. Scripture 00:10:35.250 --> 00:10:38.409 says here, you don't have what you want because 00:10:38.409 --> 00:10:45.080 you don't ask God for it. Did I say that or is 00:10:45.080 --> 00:10:48.419 that what scripture says? This is only one verse, 00:10:48.419 --> 00:10:50.940 but I mean, we could go weeks and weeks on these 00:10:50.940 --> 00:10:54.559 verses and get this. And even when you ask, you 00:10:54.559 --> 00:10:58.879 don't get it. Why? Because your motives are all 00:10:58.879 --> 00:11:04.000 wrong. So we can come to God in prayer and our 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:07.259 motives can be wrong. Our method can be wrong. 00:11:07.279 --> 00:11:09.399 The content of our prayers, it can be wrong. 00:11:09.759 --> 00:11:13.279 And we will not receive. And there's a lot of 00:11:13.279 --> 00:11:15.460 things, like as we go through this series, we're 00:11:15.460 --> 00:11:18.740 going to talk about them, that can hinder our 00:11:18.740 --> 00:11:24.700 reception of his word and answered prayer. But 00:11:24.700 --> 00:11:27.120 when Jesus prayed, and I said this earlier, when 00:11:27.120 --> 00:11:33.000 Jesus prayed, he always got answers. Was he not 00:11:33.000 --> 00:11:36.960 our example while he was here on earth, right? 00:11:37.639 --> 00:11:40.480 He was our living example of how the Christian 00:11:40.480 --> 00:11:43.059 day -to -day was supposed to be. And when Jesus 00:11:43.059 --> 00:11:46.879 prayed, he always got answered. He always received 00:11:46.879 --> 00:11:52.360 power. He always got direction. As we've looked 00:11:52.360 --> 00:11:55.899 at in weeks past, Jesus, it says, he often went 00:11:55.899 --> 00:11:59.200 away, pulled away from his disciples and the 00:11:59.200 --> 00:12:01.960 world and all these things. He often pulled away. 00:12:02.570 --> 00:12:05.809 in the early hours, and he would go off into 00:12:05.809 --> 00:12:10.070 somewhere, sometimes climb a mountain even, to 00:12:10.070 --> 00:12:14.929 just spend time. Do you think if it's essential 00:12:14.929 --> 00:12:21.129 to Jesus, if it's important to Jesus, if it's 00:12:21.129 --> 00:12:24.090 vital for Jesus to get a little bit of time away, 00:12:24.610 --> 00:12:29.129 why do we act like, you know, I'm good, prayer's 00:12:29.129 --> 00:12:32.769 the least priority of my day, right? For many 00:12:32.769 --> 00:12:37.110 of us, for Jesus, it was essential. It was like, 00:12:37.230 --> 00:12:39.769 you know what? Things are getting wild. Things 00:12:39.769 --> 00:12:42.649 are kind of, I got to get away. It's time for 00:12:42.649 --> 00:12:45.590 me to get away. I need direction. They were the Father working in him and 00:13:09.440 --> 00:13:12.620 through him. He was saying what the Father revealed 00:13:12.620 --> 00:13:17.759 him to say in that moment. Where did he get this? 00:13:17.879 --> 00:13:21.539 Within constant fellowship with the Father. Within 00:13:21.539 --> 00:13:27.259 constant communion and union with him. Prayer. 00:13:28.620 --> 00:13:36.129 Working with him. And I believe we've been looking 00:13:36.129 --> 00:13:37.970 for the past two weeks, we've been looking at 00:13:37.970 --> 00:13:40.529 the Lord's Prayer. And I believe it boils down 00:13:40.529 --> 00:13:46.230 to this. Jesus is teaching us how to tap in to 00:13:46.230 --> 00:13:53.990 God's power. He's teaching us something. He's 00:13:53.990 --> 00:13:56.409 not just telling us a list of words and phrases 00:13:56.409 --> 00:13:59.730 that sound real spiritual. As we talked about 00:13:59.730 --> 00:14:03.019 in week one, you know, we can be like... go into 00:14:03.019 --> 00:14:05.779 King James English and be like, Thou is holiest 00:14:05.779 --> 00:14:10.539 God in heaven above. We're so unworthy to receive 00:14:10.539 --> 00:14:12.940 and thank you for your presence and all that, 00:14:12.960 --> 00:14:17.659 you know. That's awful. Don't pray like that. 00:14:21.299 --> 00:14:25.059 We can also just remember something, right? And 00:14:25.059 --> 00:14:27.159 it's just, our Father who art in heaven, hallowed 00:14:27.159 --> 00:14:31.889 be thy name. Okay, you know. And we think that 00:14:31.889 --> 00:14:33.549 that's going to carry some weight, even though 00:14:33.549 --> 00:14:36.690 it's not special to us, right? It has no meaning 00:14:36.690 --> 00:14:41.710 to us. But Jesus here, as an example, his disciples 00:14:41.710 --> 00:14:45.850 are coming to him. They're saying, teach us how 00:14:45.850 --> 00:14:49.149 to pray, Master. This is found in Matthew and 00:14:49.149 --> 00:14:51.710 Luke. And they're saying, teach us how to pray, 00:14:51.769 --> 00:14:54.789 as John taught his disciples how to pray. Teach 00:14:54.789 --> 00:14:57.269 us how to pray like that. It's not that they 00:14:57.269 --> 00:14:59.230 didn't know how to pray. They didn't understand 00:14:59.230 --> 00:15:02.129 what powerful prayer looked like. And Jesus was 00:15:02.129 --> 00:15:04.509 walking in and praying something that they had 00:15:04.509 --> 00:15:08.629 not experienced in their own life. And he's saying, 00:15:08.809 --> 00:15:11.789 the disciples are coming to him saying, teach 00:15:11.789 --> 00:15:17.250 us what is different. Show us how you're receiving. 00:15:17.389 --> 00:15:20.210 Show us this direction and this power that you're 00:15:20.210 --> 00:15:22.789 receiving to do these miracles, to do these things. 00:15:22.850 --> 00:15:25.889 It's like something's different here. Tell us 00:15:25.889 --> 00:15:30.009 what it is. And Jesus goes on to share the Lord's 00:15:30.009 --> 00:15:34.789 prayer. Many of us have memorized. And to recap 00:15:34.789 --> 00:15:38.710 a little, verse 9, Matthew 6, verse 9, Jesus 00:15:38.710 --> 00:15:43.450 said, pray like this. Pray like this. This word 00:15:43.450 --> 00:15:46.710 prayer really stood out to me during this series. 00:15:47.610 --> 00:15:49.590 I'm not even going to try to pronounce it. That 00:15:49.590 --> 00:15:53.389 would just be dishonorable to everybody. But 00:15:53.389 --> 00:15:55.490 it means this. It means to interact with the 00:15:55.490 --> 00:15:59.899 Lord. By switching human desires for his wishes 00:15:59.899 --> 00:16:07.720 as he imparts faith. I like that phrase. Do you 00:16:07.720 --> 00:16:15.379 realize that faith is imparted to you? I want 00:16:15.379 --> 00:16:18.899 you to think about this. This is important. Don't 00:16:18.899 --> 00:16:25.549 miss it. The faith that pleases God. is imparted 00:16:25.549 --> 00:16:31.370 to you by the power of the Holy Spirit. He brings 00:16:31.370 --> 00:16:35.149 revelation, impartation of his word and knowledge 00:16:35.149 --> 00:16:38.409 of his word to a greater extent than you've just 00:16:38.409 --> 00:16:44.049 heard it. Right? Because faith is more than just 00:16:44.049 --> 00:16:49.330 hearing. It's believing. And you need some help 00:16:49.330 --> 00:16:55.269 to believe sometimes. for it to really get a 00:16:55.269 --> 00:16:58.509 hold of you, for the word of God to sit in you 00:16:58.509 --> 00:17:00.990 so much that you're just confident and can't 00:17:00.990 --> 00:17:06.109 be shook by it. No, it is an inward 00:17:49.400 --> 00:17:54.539 knowing, like passionate knowing, dogmatic knowing 00:17:54.539 --> 00:18:00.920 of the word of God. Who he is, what he wants 00:18:00.920 --> 00:18:07.819 to do for you. He imparts faith. It's a divine 00:18:07.819 --> 00:18:11.279 persuasion. And then he says, pray like this. 00:18:12.200 --> 00:18:15.079 Like this, meaning in this manner, in this way, 00:18:15.160 --> 00:18:18.019 fashion, in accordance with this description, 00:18:18.099 --> 00:18:21.099 are along this line. He's not saying pray this 00:18:21.099 --> 00:18:25.240 every time you come to me, even though it is 00:18:25.240 --> 00:18:30.119 about the heart of the matter, right? He's saying 00:18:30.119 --> 00:18:34.160 pray like this. Therefore, he's giving us a formula 00:18:34.160 --> 00:18:37.160 to tap into his power. He's given us revelation 00:18:37.160 --> 00:18:41.609 here for those who would hear it. What the Spirit 00:18:41.609 --> 00:18:46.589 wants to say. Spirit's working through God to 00:18:46.589 --> 00:18:49.569 reveal the truth of his word, what the Father's 00:18:49.569 --> 00:18:52.549 saying here. The Lord's Prayer, therefore, is 00:18:52.549 --> 00:18:55.589 a pattern of God, a model for powerful prayer. 00:18:56.430 --> 00:18:59.109 The memorized Lord's Prayer, as we saw in week 00:18:59.109 --> 00:19:02.549 one, excuse me, the memorized prayer, as we saw 00:19:02.549 --> 00:19:06.369 in week one, you know, they can easily become 00:19:06.369 --> 00:19:12.710 meaningless and powerless repetition. Okay?
