In this lesson, we're going to be 00:00:10.800 --> 00:00:14.519 looking at Romans chapter 6. Let's start with 00:00:14.519 --> 00:00:18.460 verse 1. Well then, shall we keep on sinning 00:00:18.460 --> 00:00:21.600 so that God can show us more and more of His 00:00:21.600 --> 00:00:26.660 wonderful grace? Now, as a recap, in Romans chapter 00:00:26.660 --> 00:00:32.409 5 verse 20, Paul had stated, that as people sin 00:00:32.409 --> 00:00:36.530 more and more, God's wonderful grace becomes 00:00:36.530 --> 00:00:41.329 more abundant. So, he presents this question. 00:00:41.570 --> 00:00:44.770 Why would he present such a question? Well, from 00:00:44.770 --> 00:00:49.390 a natural viewpoint, grace seems dangerous. This 00:00:49.390 --> 00:00:52.229 is why many people today don't teach or believe 00:00:52.229 --> 00:00:57.200 in grace, but emphasize living by the law. They 00:00:57.200 --> 00:00:59.539 believe that if you tell people God saves and 00:00:59.539 --> 00:01:03.679 accepts them apart from what they deserve, then 00:01:03.679 --> 00:01:06.980 they have no motive to be obedient. In their 00:01:06.980 --> 00:01:09.519 opinion, you simply can't keep people on the 00:01:09.519 --> 00:01:12.939 straight and narrow without a threat from God 00:01:12.939 --> 00:01:16.359 hanging over their head. If they believe their 00:01:16.359 --> 00:01:19.040 position in Jesus is settled because of what 00:01:19.040 --> 00:01:23.019 Jesus did on the cross, then the motivation for 00:01:23.019 --> 00:01:27.760 holy living is gone. That's the way so many people 00:01:27.760 --> 00:01:32.060 see Christianity. But the truth is we will never 00:01:32.060 --> 00:01:36.120 experience freedom in Christ through legalistic 00:01:36.120 --> 00:01:40.420 performance -based Christianity. True freedom 00:01:40.420 --> 00:01:44.980 only happens when we live under God's grace. 00:01:46.019 --> 00:01:50.560 In verse 2, Paul answers the question, of course 00:01:50.560 --> 00:01:56.760 not. Since we have died to sin, How can we continue 00:01:56.760 --> 00:02:01.760 to live in it? And Paul says, of course not. 00:02:02.799 --> 00:02:06.519 He's saying that the idea that anyone might purposefully 00:02:06.519 --> 00:02:10.800 continue to sin so grace would abound, that's 00:02:10.800 --> 00:02:15.219 unthinkable. Actually, Paul asks and answers 00:02:15.219 --> 00:02:19.060 this same question three times in the book of 00:02:19.060 --> 00:02:22.520 Romans. We looked at it in chapter 3 in verse 00:02:22.520 --> 00:02:27.340 8. here in Romans 6 .1, and we'll see it again 00:02:27.340 --> 00:02:32.479 in this study in Romans 6 .15. What does this 00:02:32.479 --> 00:02:35.020 tell us? Why would Paul have to keep asking? 00:02:35.300 --> 00:02:38.180 Should people keep on sinning so that God's grace 00:02:38.180 --> 00:02:41.379 would abound? Well, here's what we need to know. 00:02:41.419 --> 00:02:45.960 When grace is presented correctly, people often 00:02:45.960 --> 00:02:50.870 think it's too good, it's too easy. And that's 00:02:50.870 --> 00:02:55.229 because our human reasoning always defaults to 00:02:55.229 --> 00:02:59.229 works, to the law, to works, righteousness, deserving 00:02:59.229 --> 00:03:02.710 it or earning it with God, a right standing with 00:03:02.710 --> 00:03:07.330 God. And here Paul establishes an important principle. 00:03:07.729 --> 00:03:12.469 When we believe in Jesus for our salvation, our 00:03:12.469 --> 00:03:16.750 relationship with sin is permanently changed. 00:03:17.629 --> 00:03:23.979 We have died. If we have died to sin, then we 00:03:23.979 --> 00:03:52.599 should not live in sin anymore. This phrase, 00:03:52.800 --> 00:03:56.099 have you forgotten, is really a fundamental concept 00:03:56.099 --> 00:03:59.509 that every Christian should know. and it's illustrated 00:03:59.509 --> 00:04:03.250 through believers' baptism. Have you ever heard 00:04:03.250 --> 00:04:06.569 at a baptism, the pastor say, buried with Christ 00:04:06.569 --> 00:04:09.949 in baptism and raised to walk in newness of life? 00:04:10.289 --> 00:04:13.389 That's what it is. It's an illustration of believers' 00:04:13.550 --> 00:04:15.469 baptism, and that's what he's talking about here. 00:04:15.550 --> 00:04:19.389 He's like, have you forgotten this concept? The 00:04:19.389 --> 00:04:23.629 ancient Greek word for baptized means to immerse 00:04:23.629 --> 00:04:28.660 or overwhelm something. So water baptism, Being 00:04:28.660 --> 00:04:32.139 baptized into Christ is really a demonstration 00:04:32.139 --> 00:04:36.000 or an acting out of a believer's immersion or 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:39.660 identification with Christ in his death and resurrection. 00:04:41.259 --> 00:04:44.959 Baptism, therefore, is important because it's 00:04:44.959 --> 00:04:49.000 an illustration of a spiritual reality. It does 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:52.420 not make that reality come to pass, but if someone 00:04:52.420 --> 00:04:55.220 has not spiritually died and risen with Jesus, 00:04:55.319 --> 00:04:58.019 then all the baptisms in the world would not 00:04:58.019 --> 00:05:00.199 accomplish it for them. Doesn't matter how many 00:05:00.199 --> 00:05:04.240 times you get baptized, if it's not a real reality 00:05:04.240 --> 00:05:06.860 for you, because it's just an illustration. It's 00:05:06.860 --> 00:05:09.199 just a demonstration of what's happened on the 00:05:09.199 --> 00:05:13.519 inside. So something dramatic and life -changing 00:05:13.519 --> 00:05:17.180 happens in the life of the believer. not by their 00:05:17.180 --> 00:05:20.079 work, you know, just being sprinkled in water 00:05:20.079 --> 00:05:23.199 or dunked in water. You can't die and rise again 00:05:23.199 --> 00:05:26.800 without it changing your life. And at salvation, 00:05:27.040 --> 00:05:31.079 a believer has a real spiritual death and a real 00:05:31.079 --> 00:05:35.079 spiritual resurrection with Jesus Christ. The death of the old man is an established 00:07:07.120 --> 00:07:10.300 fact, and it happened spiritually when we identified 00:07:10.300 --> 00:07:15.139 with Jesus' death at our salvation. None of us 00:07:15.139 --> 00:07:19.060 nailed our old man to the cross. Jesus did that 00:07:19.060 --> 00:07:22.459 for us, and we are told to consider it done. 00:07:23.420 --> 00:07:27.060 Two other places in the New Testament, Ephesians 00:07:27.060 --> 00:07:30.930 4 .22, And Colossians 3 .9 mentioned the old 00:07:30.930 --> 00:07:34.269 man and remind us to consider him done away with, 00:07:34.509 --> 00:07:37.189 telling us to put off the old man as something 00:07:37.189 --> 00:07:40.490 that is dead and gone. So, strictly speaking, 00:07:40.910 --> 00:07:43.529 we're not supposed to constantly battle the old 00:07:43.529 --> 00:07:48.709 man. We're supposed to consider him dead. Some 00:07:48.709 --> 00:07:51.750 Christians focus solely on the crucified life. 00:07:52.649 --> 00:07:56.069 But being crucified with Christ is the gateway 00:07:56.069 --> 00:08:01.069 to resurrection life. See, his death was our 00:08:01.069 --> 00:08:04.850 death. But this also means that his resurrection 00:08:04.850 --> 00:08:09.069 was our resurrection. So the life of Christ now 00:08:09.069 --> 00:08:14.230 flows through us. Our flesh is the problem in 00:08:14.230 --> 00:08:17.629 the battle against sin. And it was trained in 00:08:17.629 --> 00:08:21.730 sinful habits by three sources, we see. First, 00:08:22.110 --> 00:08:25.529 It was trained by the old man. Before he was 00:08:25.529 --> 00:08:29.230 crucified with Christ, the old man trained and 00:08:29.230 --> 00:08:34.429 imprinted himself on our flesh. Second, the world 00:08:34.429 --> 00:08:38.450 system, in its spirit of rebellion against God, 00:08:38.570 --> 00:08:42.149 can have a continuing influence on our flesh. 00:08:42.509 --> 00:08:45.990 And then finally, the devil seeks to tempt and 00:08:45.990 --> 00:08:49.750 influence our flesh towards sin. So, when we 00:08:49.750 --> 00:08:52.230 allow the flesh to be continually influenced 00:08:52.230 --> 00:08:55.850 by the old man's habits of the past, the world, 00:08:55.850 --> 00:08:59.549 and the devil, the flesh will exert a powerful 00:08:59.549 --> 00:09:04.570 pull towards sin. But, if we let the new man 00:09:04.570 --> 00:09:08.429 within us influence our mind, will, and emotions, 00:09:08.610 --> 00:09:11.710 our soul, then the battle will be less intense. 00:09:17.340 --> 00:09:21.740 we know we will also live with him. We are sure 00:09:21.740 --> 00:09:25.159 of this because Christ was raised from the dead 00:09:25.159 --> 00:09:29.200 and he will never die again. And because 00:11:26.690 --> 00:11:31.250 of that, we are set free from sin because the 00:11:31.250 --> 00:11:35.750 old man died with Jesus on the cross. Now a new 00:11:35.750 --> 00:11:41.679 man, a free man lives. Everyone is free to sin, 00:11:41.840 --> 00:11:44.240 right? Everyone in the world is free to sin. 00:11:45.000 --> 00:11:49.679 But only those who are in Christ are free to 00:11:49.679 --> 00:11:54.279 stop sinning. I want to share a story that I 00:11:54.279 --> 00:11:57.600 came across during my study. It's a true historical 00:11:57.600 --> 00:12:01.039 study, but I believe it goes along with what 00:12:01.039 --> 00:12:04.980 we need to understand. In the 14th century, two 00:12:04.980 --> 00:12:08.730 brothers fought for the right to rule over a 00:12:08.730 --> 00:12:15.429 Ducatum in what is now Belgium. The older brother's 00:12:15.429 --> 00:12:19.490 name was Raynaud, but he was commonly called 00:12:19.490 --> 00:12:24.710 Crassus as a Latin nickname meaning fat, for 00:12:24.710 --> 00:12:28.629 he was horribly obese. After a heated battle, 00:12:28.889 --> 00:12:33.210 Raynaud's younger brother Edward led a successful 00:12:33.210 --> 00:12:37.730 revolt against him and assumed the title of Duke 00:12:37.730 --> 00:12:43.590 over his lands. But instead of killing his older 00:12:43.590 --> 00:12:48.929 brother, Raynald, Edward devised a curious imprisonment. 00:12:49.529 --> 00:12:53.230 He had a room in the castle built around Crassus, 00:12:53.389 --> 00:12:58.090 a room with only one door. The door was not locked, 00:12:58.309 --> 00:13:03.210 the windows were not barred, and Edward promised 00:13:03.210 --> 00:13:06.850 Raynald, that he could regain his land and his 00:13:06.850 --> 00:13:10.309 title any time that he wanted to. All he would 00:13:10.309 --> 00:13:15.129 have to do is leave the room. The obstacle to 00:13:15.129 --> 00:13:18.350 freedom was not in the doors or the windows, 00:13:18.669 --> 00:13:23.669 but with Reynold himself. Being grossly overweight, 00:13:24.029 --> 00:13:28.289 he could not fit through the door, even though 00:13:28.289 --> 00:13:33.250 it was of near -normal size. All Reynold needed 00:13:33.250 --> 00:13:38.039 to do, was diet down to a smaller size, then 00:13:38.039 --> 00:13:41.759 walk out of the room a free man, with all he 00:13:41.759 --> 00:13:46.200 had before his fall. However, his younger brother 00:13:46.200 --> 00:13:49.799 kept sending him an assortment of tasty foods, 00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:54.659 and Raynald's desire to be free never won out 00:13:54.659 --> 00:13:59.259 over his desire to eat. Some would accuse Duke 00:13:59.259 --> 00:14:02.750 Edward of being cruel to his older brother. But 00:14:02.750 --> 00:14:05.269 he would simply reply, my brother is not a prisoner. 00:14:05.590 --> 00:14:11.250 He may leave when he so wills. But Raynald stayed 00:14:11.250 --> 00:14:15.409 in that room for 10 years until Edward himself 00:14:15.409 --> 00:14:21.009 was killed in battle. Now this story accurately 00:14:21.009 --> 00:14:23.710 illustrates the experience of many Christians. 00:14:24.710 --> 00:14:30.100 Jesus set them forever free legally. and they 00:14:30.100 --> 00:14:34.019 may walk out in that freedom from sin whenever 00:14:34.019 --> 00:14:37.700 they choose. But since they keep yielding their 00:14:37.700 --> 00:14:42.659 fleshly appetites to the service of sin, they 00:14:42.659 --> 00:14:47.120 live a life of defeat, discouragement, and imprisonment. 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:52.480 See, a person can be officially set free, but 00:14:52.480 --> 00:14:56.889 still live imprisoned. When a person lives in 00:14:56.889 --> 00:14:59.649 prison for years and then is set free, they often 00:14:59.649 --> 00:15:04.090 still think and act like a prisoner. The habits 00:15:04.090 --> 00:15:07.370 of freedom aren't ingrained in their life yet. 00:15:07.750 --> 00:15:10.909 And here, Paul shows how to build the habits 00:15:10.909 --> 00:15:14.789 of freedom in the Christian life. First of all, 00:15:14.809 --> 00:15:25.039 he says, Parts of our body. I mean... You have 00:15:25.039 --> 00:15:28.440 eyes, so don't put them in the service of sin. 00:15:28.539 --> 00:15:32.659 You have ears, but don't put them in the service 00:15:32.659 --> 00:15:37.659 of sin. David gives us a human example. God used 00:15:37.659 --> 00:15:42.600 David's hands to slay Goliath in the cause of 00:15:42.600 --> 00:15:47.600 righteousness. But later in David's life, sin 00:15:47.600 --> 00:15:51.879 used David's eyes for unrighteousness when he 00:15:51.879 --> 00:15:56.750 looked upon sin. Bathsheba someone else's wife 00:15:56.750 --> 00:16:04.389 and two he says instead of letting any part of 00:16:04.389 --> 00:16:06.429 your body become an instrument of evil to serve 00:16:06.429 --> 00:16:09.970 sin instead of that number two give yourselves 00:16:09.970 --> 00:16:14.990 completely to God so we need to walk in the freedom 00:16:14.990 --> 00:16:19.509 Jesus won for us it isn't enough to take the 00:16:19.509 --> 00:16:23.039 weapons away from the service of sin They must 00:16:23.039 --> 00:16:28.159 be enlisted in the service of God, in the service 00:16:28.159 --> 00:16:33.940 of righteousness. Verse 15. Well then, since 00:16:33.940 --> 00:16:37.259 God's grace has set us free from the law, does 00:16:37.259 --> 00:16:40.799 that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not. 00:16:41.559 --> 00:16:44.279 Don't you realize that you become the slave of 00:16:44.279 --> 00:16:47.740 whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave 00:16:47.740 --> 00:16:51.039 to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose 00:16:51.039 --> 00:16:54.299 to obey God. which leads to righteous living. 00:16:55.779 --> 00:17:00.279 At first, verse 1 and 15 seem to say the same 00:17:00.279 --> 00:17:03.320 thing in most English translations, but if we 00:17:03.320 --> 00:17:06.599 take a closer look, they're different. Verse 00:17:06.599 --> 00:17:10.720 1 says, should we keep on sinning? And verse 00:17:10.720 --> 00:17:15.440 15 says, does that mean we can go on sinning? 00:17:15.740 --> 00:17:19.640 You see, verse 1 is talking about continual, 00:17:19.640 --> 00:17:24.859 habitual sin. Whereas verse 15 is talking about 00:17:24.859 --> 00:17:28.440 occasionally playing around with or dabbling 00:17:28.440 --> 00:17:32.339 in sin. But Paul's answer is still the same. 00:17:32.539 --> 00:17:35.700 He uses the same phrase here. Of course not. 00:17:36.680 --> 00:17:40.680 Paul uses the illustration of slavery to convey 00:17:40.680 --> 00:17:44.079 this message. And this kind of reminds me of 00:17:44.079 --> 00:17:46.380 the great philosopher, you could say Bob Dylan. 00:17:46.980 --> 00:17:50.509 Bob Dylan. wrote a song and he said, you're going 00:17:50.509 --> 00:17:53.650 to have to serve somebody. It may be the devil, 00:17:53.769 --> 00:17:56.650 it might be the Lord, but you're going to have 00:17:56.650 --> 00:18:00.410 to serve somebody. And in a lot of ways, that's 00:18:00.410 --> 00:18:02.690 true and kind of saying the same thing that Paul 00:18:02.690 --> 00:18:05.430 is saying here, right? It's like one way or another, 00:18:05.769 --> 00:18:09.509 each one of us are going to serve somebody. And 00:18:09.509 --> 00:18:13.730 there's only two options. We serve sin or serve 00:18:13.730 --> 00:18:18.289 God. I want you to imagine something. Can you 00:18:18.289 --> 00:18:21.470 imagine like having a new job and on the first 00:18:21.470 --> 00:18:24.650 day of your new job, you leave work at lunch 00:18:24.650 --> 00:18:28.730 and go to your old job and ask your old boss 00:18:28.730 --> 00:18:31.849 what he wants you to do? In the same way, this 00:18:31.849 --> 00:18:34.230 is like an example of the same thing that we 00:18:34.230 --> 00:18:37.349 do sometimes as Christians. We return to our 00:18:37.349 --> 00:18:42.130 flesh, our old man. We go back and we're like, 00:18:42.289 --> 00:18:44.990 hey, what do you want me to do? We serve our 00:18:44.990 --> 00:18:48.069 old self. But no, we're not supposed to even 00:18:48.069 --> 00:18:50.230 consider it. It's supposed to be dead to us, 00:18:50.250 --> 00:18:54.990 right? It's impossible for a new creation in 00:18:54.990 --> 00:18:59.109 Jesus to be comfortable in habitual sin. We should 00:18:59.109 --> 00:19:01.970 not just keep returning and sinning, you know, 00:19:01.970 --> 00:19:06.109 and being this state of sin all the time. You 00:19:06.109 --> 00:19:09.970 know, the state of sin should and can only be 00:19:09.970 --> 00:19:14.230 temporary for the Christian. Spurgeon once said 00:19:14.230 --> 00:19:17.789 that the grace that does not change my life will 00:19:17.789 --> 00:19:21.190 not save my soul. We're supposed to be changed. 00:19:22.230 --> 00:19:26.210 The changes may not come all at one time, and 00:19:26.210 --> 00:19:29.460 the changes might come might not come to each 00:19:29.460 --> 00:19:32.640 area of one's life at the same time, but they 00:19:32.640 --> 00:19:35.920 will be there.
