Well, on our previous episode, we were talking 00:01:35.599 --> 00:01:38.939 about the benefits of pet ownership and the topic 00:01:38.939 --> 00:01:42.659 of therapy pets came up. And a therapy pet is 00:01:42.659 --> 00:01:45.700 quite simply a pet that's more than a pet. It's 00:01:45.700 --> 00:01:48.180 a pet that serves a functional purpose. Aside 00:01:48.180 --> 00:01:51.379 from the emotional and health benefits, some 00:01:51.379 --> 00:01:55.859 therapy pets are very, very specially trained. 00:01:56.859 --> 00:02:02.359 to be able to provide safety benefits to their 00:02:02.359 --> 00:02:05.379 human companions. For example, there are dogs 00:02:05.379 --> 00:02:08.879 out there that are trained to be able to predict 00:02:08.879 --> 00:02:11.659 when their owner is going to have a seizure or 00:02:11.659 --> 00:02:14.740 things like that. But therapy pets can also be 00:02:14.740 --> 00:02:19.460 used for other things too. So I did some research 00:02:19.460 --> 00:02:24.180 on this. There are therapy pets for a lot of 00:02:24.180 --> 00:02:26.199 different things. For example, there are therapy 00:02:26.199 --> 00:02:29.099 pets out there for dementia, to help patients 00:02:29.099 --> 00:02:33.719 with dementia. For children and adults with ADHD, 00:02:34.280 --> 00:02:38.379 attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Also 00:02:38.379 --> 00:02:42.520 for depression and schizophrenia. There are therapy 00:02:42.520 --> 00:02:45.659 pets out there that can help them. And so that's 00:02:45.659 --> 00:02:48.819 a wonderful thing because a therapy pet can help. 00:02:49.370 --> 00:02:52.110 Improve the quality of life of someone who's 00:02:52.110 --> 00:02:54.770 struggling, maybe medically or psychologically, 00:02:55.030 --> 00:02:59.870 can help improve their quality of life by reducing 00:02:59.870 --> 00:03:04.830 pain, increasing comfort, helping them work through 00:03:04.830 --> 00:03:07.389 social and behavioral challenges, things like 00:03:07.389 --> 00:03:12.210 that. And I know that not every pet is a therapy 00:03:12.210 --> 00:03:16.270 pet. True. But almost every pet is capable of 00:03:16.270 --> 00:03:21.490 providing. some comfort and some therapy to their 00:03:21.490 --> 00:03:25.710 owners. So they're all sort of therapy pets, 00:03:25.889 --> 00:03:29.150 but not the clinically defined proper therapy 00:03:29.150 --> 00:03:31.009 pet. Now you have to be careful with that because 00:03:31.009 --> 00:03:34.830 that's actually something that has created quite 00:03:34.830 --> 00:03:39.310 a bit of a brouhaha here recently. Really? Yes, 00:03:39.310 --> 00:03:43.349 because apparently there are individuals who 00:03:43.349 --> 00:03:47.370 are trying to pass off their regular pets as 00:03:47.759 --> 00:03:52.020 therapy pets because they do provide that emotional 00:03:52.020 --> 00:03:55.460 support so hence the term emotional support pet 00:03:55.460 --> 00:03:58.960 there's a difference though between an emotional 00:03:58.960 --> 00:04:01.979 support pet and a therapy pet and therapy pets 00:04:01.979 --> 00:04:04.840 are protected by law they have very specific 00:04:04.840 --> 00:04:07.900 regulations about flying on airplanes with you 00:04:07.900 --> 00:04:11.439 going into hotels with you and and things that 00:04:11.439 --> 00:04:14.860 people cannot prohibit you from doing with that 00:04:14.860 --> 00:04:17.120 therapy pet, being in a restaurant, for instance. 00:04:17.319 --> 00:04:19.399 Right, and they're protected because therapy 00:04:19.399 --> 00:04:22.439 pets have usually undergone extensive training 00:04:22.439 --> 00:04:26.379 to be able to handle a multitude of situations. 00:04:26.879 --> 00:04:30.160 And that, you know, I say that all pets can provide 00:04:30.160 --> 00:04:32.899 some degree of therapy, but not all pets are 00:04:32.899 --> 00:04:35.120 therapy pets. Correct. Because only those that 00:04:35.120 --> 00:04:38.199 have received that extensive training, as I understand, 00:04:38.519 --> 00:04:41.600 are the ones that are protected by law, are allowed 00:04:41.600 --> 00:04:45.029 to wear the certain... Correct. Drapes or clothing 00:04:45.029 --> 00:04:47.850 or, you know, a little coat that says, you know, 00:04:47.910 --> 00:04:51.050 a registered therapy pet. It's sort of like you 00:04:51.050 --> 00:04:53.509 have to be registered. It has to be trained. 00:04:53.810 --> 00:04:56.230 It all has to be done right. You can't just say, 00:04:56.269 --> 00:04:59.550 I found this lizard in my yard and it's my therapy 00:04:59.550 --> 00:05:01.550 lizard. It makes me feel real good to have it 00:05:01.550 --> 00:05:04.290 with me. Oh, my goodness. Really? Well, I couldn't 00:05:04.290 --> 00:05:08.610 help it. I'm sorry. Okay. But, you know, lizards 00:05:08.610 --> 00:05:11.670 can be. They can be therapy pets if you can train 00:05:11.670 --> 00:05:16.389 them. So the most common therapy pets are dogs, 00:05:16.610 --> 00:05:20.050 cats. Contrary to the popular belief that you 00:05:20.050 --> 00:05:22.970 cannot train a cat, you can train a cat. Yes, 00:05:23.089 --> 00:05:26.509 you can. Horses. Horses are really big. No pun 00:05:26.509 --> 00:05:30.060 intended. But I never thought of a horse being 00:05:30.060 --> 00:05:32.459 a therapy pet. Absolutely, absolutely. That's 00:05:32.459 --> 00:05:34.899 amazing. Horses are wonderful therapy pets. They're 00:05:34.899 --> 00:05:37.459 intelligent animals. There are some wonderful 00:05:37.459 --> 00:05:40.600 organizations that use therapy horses to work 00:05:40.600 --> 00:05:43.199 with autistic children to help bring them out 00:05:43.199 --> 00:05:46.939 of their shell, so to speak, and improve their 00:05:46.939 --> 00:05:50.019 behavior. I know that some smaller breeds of 00:05:50.019 --> 00:05:52.199 horses have been brought into hospital settings 00:05:52.199 --> 00:05:57.850 and into children's wards. I've heard of that 00:05:57.850 --> 00:06:00.829 happening. There are regular -sized horses. In 00:06:00.829 --> 00:06:03.470 fact, right here in Florida, there's a stable 00:06:03.470 --> 00:06:07.430 where you can take children with disabilities 00:06:07.430 --> 00:06:10.769 or challenges, and they have therapy horses that 00:06:10.769 --> 00:06:13.329 can work with them. Oh, that's wonderful. That 00:06:13.329 --> 00:06:16.670 is great. Well, I guess then that also leads 00:06:16.670 --> 00:06:20.540 us to the next logical question. Where do you 00:06:20.540 --> 00:06:23.899 find those registered, properly trained animals 00:06:23.899 --> 00:06:26.379 when you feel or when your doctor feels that 00:06:26.379 --> 00:06:29.779 there is a need for one? So there's a very, very 00:06:29.779 --> 00:06:32.939 lengthy process you have to go through. And each 00:06:32.939 --> 00:06:37.120 state is different. Each diagnosis is different. 00:06:37.180 --> 00:06:40.379 So depending on what kind of therapy pet someone 00:06:40.379 --> 00:06:44.620 needs. I would definitely reach out to, there's 00:06:44.620 --> 00:06:47.459 a multitude of organizations for each diagnosis. 00:06:48.139 --> 00:06:51.160 They go through a long checklist of matching 00:06:51.160 --> 00:06:53.100 you up to just the right animal. We also talk at times about when the end 00:07:13.230 --> 00:07:16.290 of life begins to approach. One of the most frightening 00:07:16.290 --> 00:07:20.290 things for many people is the realization that 00:07:20.290 --> 00:07:23.449 instead of the other way around, their pet is 00:07:23.449 --> 00:07:26.569 likely to outlive them. Correct. And then they 00:07:26.569 --> 00:07:28.870 go into a panic of, well, what happens to my 00:07:28.870 --> 00:07:33.199 pet now? None of my family wants it. old and 00:07:33.199 --> 00:07:35.220 cranky, it doesn't want to go anywhere else. 00:07:35.439 --> 00:07:38.279 Which is why when we were working with the Jacksonville 00:07:38.279 --> 00:07:40.379 Humane Society, we actually worked with them 00:07:40.379 --> 00:07:46.600 to develop a program for local seniors and hospice 00:07:46.600 --> 00:07:50.800 patients that would help place their pet after 00:07:50.800 --> 00:07:54.759 the pet owner's demise. Well, and that's a wonderful 00:07:55.740 --> 00:08:00.139 I guess, way to add some peace and add some comfort 00:08:00.139 --> 00:08:03.740 to people. If that's their only family member, 00:08:03.860 --> 00:08:07.529 if that's their only... thing in life that has 00:08:07.529 --> 00:08:09.329 provided them that care and that they've taken 00:08:09.329 --> 00:08:11.490 care of all this time and now they realize they're 00:08:11.490 --> 00:08:13.029 not going to be able to take care of it anymore. 00:08:13.449 --> 00:08:16.930 That's a horribly stressful way to spend your 00:08:16.930 --> 00:08:20.449 last day. Absolutely. So that's a wonderful program 00:08:20.449 --> 00:08:23.310 that was very, very helpful and I'm sure the 00:08:23.310 --> 00:08:27.350 Humane Society still works on ideas to foster. 00:08:27.879 --> 00:08:30.860 situations like that the humane society not so 00:08:30.860 --> 00:08:34.019 much but there is one of our local hospices that 00:08:34.019 --> 00:08:38.759 does partner um with the humane society and other 00:08:38.759 --> 00:08:43.120 rescues um oh that's right truthfully i tell 00:08:43.120 --> 00:08:46.309 you Needs to happen everywhere. Absolutely. And 00:08:46.309 --> 00:08:50.149 one of the best resources that someone can have 00:08:50.149 --> 00:08:54.889 if they are facing a life -limiting illness and 00:08:54.889 --> 00:08:57.669 they're looking for what to do with their pet, 00:08:57.929 --> 00:09:02.370 if family cannot be an option, if family is not 00:09:02.370 --> 00:09:06.009 a resource, then... what I would recommend doing 00:09:06.009 --> 00:09:08.750 is reaching out to your local shelters because, 00:09:08.850 --> 00:09:12.669 yes, you have your ASPCAs, you have your humane 00:09:12.669 --> 00:09:16.389 societies, you have your city -sanctioned shelters, 00:09:16.529 --> 00:09:20.990 but there are a lot of small, I call them mom 00:09:20.990 --> 00:09:23.889 -and -pop rescues, which is it's literally just 00:09:23.889 --> 00:09:26.009 someone operating a rescue out of the goodness 00:09:26.009 --> 00:09:28.870 of their heart. Most of the time they don't have 00:09:28.870 --> 00:09:31.330 a physical location. They work on a fostering 00:09:31.330 --> 00:09:34.080 system where they have foster homes. These are 00:09:34.080 --> 00:09:36.460 the places that are really going to be able to 00:09:36.460 --> 00:09:40.279 help you network and help you find a place for 00:09:40.279 --> 00:09:43.240 your pet if you're not going to be able to take 00:09:43.240 --> 00:09:46.559 care of them. Yes. But there are oftentimes, and I saw this 00:12:36.990 --> 00:12:38.970 happen many times when we would tape that show, 00:12:39.090 --> 00:12:43.470 grocery buggies filled with puppies or filled 00:12:43.470 --> 00:12:46.149 with kittens that would come in the door in the 00:12:46.149 --> 00:12:48.049 early morning hours about the time we'd go in 00:12:48.049 --> 00:12:51.409 to tape the show, in the spring and in the fall, 00:12:51.470 --> 00:12:54.980 in the breeding season. And fortunately, there's 00:12:54.980 --> 00:12:58.220 a company now in town, a nonprofit, that spays 00:12:58.220 --> 00:13:00.740 and neuters strays so that you can trap and then 00:13:00.740 --> 00:13:04.159 release. and they're not going to continue. We 00:13:04.159 --> 00:13:07.879 called it an epidemic back in the day of overpopulation. 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:10.960 But, you know, it's not just the animals that 00:13:10.960 --> 00:13:14.419 are coming in off the streets. We're in Florida, 00:13:14.460 --> 00:13:18.679 and here in Florida, in the last two weeks, there 00:13:18.679 --> 00:13:22.000 have been two different hoarding situations where 00:13:22.000 --> 00:13:26.759 almost 200 animals came into the local shelters. 00:13:27.419 --> 00:13:29.960 All at one time. All at one time. Yeah. Within 00:13:29.960 --> 00:13:33.899 a two -week span. And it's not just a constant 00:13:33.899 --> 00:13:36.899 state of overpopulation. It's not just an epidemic 00:13:36.899 --> 00:13:41.539 that twice a year completely overwhelms the shelters. 00:13:41.960 --> 00:13:44.799 But then you have situations like that, right 00:13:44.799 --> 00:13:47.740 in the middle of the epidemic, and here comes 00:13:47.740 --> 00:13:51.240 more. I know when we were doing the show, the 00:13:51.240 --> 00:13:54.159 average intake for the shelter, I think, was 00:13:54.159 --> 00:13:58.419 right around 15 ,000 animals a year. Yeah. Yes. 00:13:58.620 --> 00:14:01.960 It was in excess of 1 ,100 to 1 ,200, I know, 00:14:02.059 --> 00:14:05.740 at least over 1 ,000 a month. Yeah. It felt like 00:14:05.740 --> 00:14:07.820 sometimes it was 1 ,000 a day. But the point 00:14:07.820 --> 00:14:11.340 is the show can benefit all of those shelters 00:14:11.340 --> 00:14:14.340 and get some of those animals new lifetime loving 00:14:14.340 --> 00:14:18.200 homes just the same way.
