Hi, this is Kriti, welcome…to my podcast, Critical Moments. Today's episode is "Blooms of Bliss": Cultivating Mindfulness and Happiness through Gardening. In this episode, we will explore the transformative power of gardening for Mindfulness and happiness. Join us as we dig deep into the therapeutic soil of nature, discovering how cultivating a garden can nurture plants and an inner sense of peace and joy. Gardening is a sanctuary for the soul. It is a holistic endeavor that impacts various facets of our well-being. It goes beyond the mere act of sowing seeds and nurturing plants; it is an experience that enriches our lives in multiple ways. 1. Stress Reduction: Engaging in gardening activities has been consistently linked to reduced stress levels. Digging into the soil, nurturing plants, and being a soothing embrace of nature is a therapeutic escape from daily activities, significantly lowering cortisol, the stress hormone. 2. Mental well-being: Numerous studies have emphasized the positive impact of gardening on mental health. A study published in the Journal of Health and Psychology found a correlation between gardening and decreased stress and anxiety levels. 3. Physical Health Benefits: Gardening involves physical activity, improving physical dexterity, and a healthy lifestyle. 4. Gardening exposes you to sunlight and fresh air, which helps improve your mood and also prevents Vitamin D deficiency. 5. Gardening gives you hope. We plant seeds and trust that they will grow. Tending to a garden is a way of stepping outside of yourselves. Tending to the garden helps shift the focus away from ourselves, and this can decrease anxiety and stress. 6. Improved diet: Growing and eating your own fruits and vegetables positively impacts your diet. Gardeners are likelier to include vegetables and fruits in healthy, well-balanced diets. 7. Gardening brings people together and strengthens social connections. Social connections are essential since they help reduce stress, improve resilience, and provide support during difficult times. A strong sense of belonging lowers your risk of depression and anxiety. Have you ever wondered why your first glimpse of a patch of crocuses each spring elicits happiness? Whether we own a garden or not, connecting with flowers and plants instills a sense of relaxation and peace that boosts our happiness. There is a Chinese proverb: "If you want to be happy for a lifetime, be a gardener." Research shows that people who spend time gardening experience less stress, have a more positive outlook, and are physically and mentally healthier. In a Japanese study, viewing plants altered the EEG recordings, reducing stress, fear, anger, and sadness. Gardening reduces blood pressure, pulse rate, and muscle tension. Results of another study showed that gardening increased life satisfaction, vigor, psychological well-being, and cognitive function. I love gardening with my Mom, and we spend much time together in the garden, which is very relaxing. Spending time in the garden can lead to Mindfulness and, in my experience_ happiness. Gardening grounds us in the present moment. Worries about the future or the past dissolve while digging in the dirt—the garden channels all the energy to the present, the only place where reality is happening. By cultivating new plants and beauty in nature, gardening connects us to the universe. Gardening teaches us how to weed out non-beneficial plants to make room for new growth of our choosing, in the same way that Mindfulness teaches us to weed out non-beneficial thoughts. Gardening teaches us to let go of our need for control. No matter how many books I read, my garden has offered me the life lesson of happiness. It has taught me patience, to let go of the need to control, and to let go of expectations. As we garden, we learn to tune into nature's intricate rhythms. We adjust our efforts according to the seasons, choosing the right time to sow seeds, prune, and harvest. Through this process, we gain a better understanding of our world. Think about it…..As we tend to our plants, we develop patience, as the growth of a beautiful garden cannot be rushed. We learn resilience as we face challenges. We learn humility, accepting that we cannot fully control or dictate nature despite our efforts. In other words, our gardens offer meaningful experiences that shape us, nurture our spirits, and teach us valuable life lessons. When we invest ourselves in our garden, we nurture our happiness. And I believe it is the best part of gardening. How to start gardening? If you have never gardened before, it can feel daunting at first. A garden can be as big or as small as you want. Some of you like extensive gardens, and some prefer small container gardens. Choose what feels suitable for you. Here are some tips for you: 1. Start small. It is easy to get excited and want a large garden, but it can be overwhelming. Don't take more than you can handle because that can cause stress. You can always increase the size of your garden in the future. 2. Build a network: Find other people who are interested in gardening. Learn from each other's successes and failures. 3. Research appropriate plants: Find plants that grow well in your climate and hardiness zone. Talk to the local garden center or agricultural resource office for tips on what plants thrive in your area. It improves your chance of success and lowers the stress and potential disappointment. 4. Pick the best spot. Almost all flowering plants and vegetables need 6-8 hours of sunlight. 5. Clear the ground, getting rid of weeds and sod in the area. 6. Test and improve your soil and prepare your plant beds 7. Plant things you love. If you love the beauty of flowers, then find plants that suit your needs. If you love the idea of healthy, organic produce, then grow vegetables. 8. Make time for your garden. It needs regular attention. As we conclude this episode on gardening for happiness and Mindfulness, let the essence of nature linger in your thoughts. In the realm of soil and seeds, we find not just plants but a path to Mindfulness and happiness. As you dig into the earth, let each moment root you in the present. Witness the transformation of seeds into vibrant life. Embrace the therapeutic rhythm of nature's cycles. In the garden, find solace, joy, and a refuge for your thoughts. Cultivate not just flowers and vegetables but a deeper connection to life's simple yet profound beauty. Through gardening, let Mindfulness blossom, and may your journey be as rewarding as the fruits of your labor. Until our next episode, happy gardening, and may your days be filled with vibrant hues of nature's gift.
