Guilt is a lie that comes from a very 00:12:34.090 --> 00:12:37.570 real spiritual enemy who would love for us to 00:12:37.570 --> 00:12:40.110 constantly be consumed with guilt. It's like 00:12:40.110 --> 00:12:43.929 treading on an ocean of guilt. We're not going 00:12:43.929 --> 00:12:45.470 anywhere. We're not moving forward. We're not 00:12:45.470 --> 00:12:48.470 going back. We're just trying to survive. Guilt 00:12:48.470 --> 00:12:52.919 paralyzes actions. We start to think things like, 00:12:53.000 --> 00:12:56.139 well, I'm never going to overcome this. I'm never 00:12:56.139 --> 00:12:58.860 going to conquer this. I'm never going to get 00:12:58.860 --> 00:13:01.480 over this failure. So why even try? I'm not good 00:13:01.480 --> 00:13:05.019 enough. I'm just going to give up. But let Romans 00:13:05.019 --> 00:13:10.059 8 .1 remind you, there is no condemnation for 00:13:10.059 --> 00:13:13.279 those who belong to Jesus. And notice this verse. 00:13:13.360 --> 00:13:17.879 It doesn't say less condemnation, a little condemnation, 00:13:17.879 --> 00:13:21.840 or occasional condemnation. It says no condemnation, 00:13:21.840 --> 00:13:26.059 none. It's as if you're a prisoner, right? Your 00:13:26.059 --> 00:13:29.340 sentence had been fully forgiven. You were locked 00:13:29.340 --> 00:13:32.700 up, but your sentence has been paid. But yet 00:13:32.700 --> 00:13:35.299 every day you walk out of the cell only to turn 00:13:35.299 --> 00:13:37.860 around and walk back in and pull it shut because 00:13:37.860 --> 00:13:41.299 you feel guilty. See, when God forgives you, 00:13:41.480 --> 00:13:45.039 he doesn't place you on probation, right? He 00:13:45.039 --> 00:13:48.960 doesn't put an ankle monitor on your ankle. He 00:13:48.960 --> 00:13:51.639 doesn't constantly follow up. When God forgives 00:13:51.639 --> 00:13:54.940 you, he gives you a brand new start, a fresh 00:13:54.940 --> 00:13:57.740 beginning. The other thing guilt does is that 00:13:57.740 --> 00:14:01.620 it breeds self -hatred. We literally heap self 00:14:01.620 --> 00:14:04.340 -hatred on ourselves. The more we dwell on it, 00:14:04.419 --> 00:14:07.379 the more we play that mistake over and over again 00:14:07.379 --> 00:14:09.559 in our minds, you know what happens? It becomes 00:14:09.559 --> 00:14:13.720 us. But the Bible, the Bible talks about this 00:14:13.720 --> 00:14:16.679 other thing. And it's not guilt. It's called 00:14:16.679 --> 00:14:20.320 conviction. Literally the conviction of the Holy 00:14:20.320 --> 00:14:22.539 Spirit. And there's a big difference. See, the 00:14:22.539 --> 00:14:24.879 conviction of the Holy Spirit is one of the most 00:14:24.879 --> 00:14:27.080 beautiful things ever because it produces change 00:14:27.080 --> 00:14:30.029 in our lives. And sometimes those in a relationship 00:14:30.029 --> 00:14:32.730 with Jesus, they get confused with guilt and 00:14:32.730 --> 00:14:36.090 conviction. But notice what conviction does, 00:14:36.250 --> 00:14:41.190 1 John 1, 9. If we confess our sins to him, he 00:14:41.190 --> 00:14:44.029 is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and 00:14:44.029 --> 00:14:48.350 to cleanse us from all wickedness. See, he wipes 00:14:48.350 --> 00:14:52.389 us clean from any unrighteousness. And that's 00:14:52.389 --> 00:14:54.169 got to be one of the most powerful verses in 00:14:54.169 --> 00:14:57.399 the Bible. He tries to get us in a mindset where the 00:18:24.180 --> 00:18:26.480 things we've done, all those things we've done, 00:18:26.539 --> 00:18:30.720 become who we see ourselves to be. So you don't 00:18:30.720 --> 00:18:34.319 say, I committed adultery. You say, I'm an adulterer. 00:18:34.990 --> 00:18:38.150 You don't say, I've taken some things. You say, 00:18:38.250 --> 00:18:41.789 I'm a thief. You don't say, I'm trying to numb 00:18:41.789 --> 00:18:45.769 the pain. You say, I'm an addict. But we read 00:18:45.769 --> 00:18:49.049 in the Bible that Jesus takes this one step further. 00:18:49.430 --> 00:18:51.410 He takes it one step further. He says, when you 00:18:51.410 --> 00:18:54.269 hate someone in your heart and mind, you're a 00:18:54.269 --> 00:18:57.309 murderer. That you've committed murder in your 00:18:57.309 --> 00:19:00.950 mind. See, Jesus wants us to see that it's all 00:19:00.950 --> 00:19:05.529 in our mind. It's a mental outlook. And what 00:19:05.529 --> 00:19:08.190 he's saying to us is don't see yourself as having 00:19:08.190 --> 00:19:11.609 resentment or hate towards somebody. You're literally 00:19:11.609 --> 00:19:14.569 like a murderer in your mind. But we have to 00:19:14.569 --> 00:19:17.690 realize sin, when we sin, it's just an event. 00:19:18.269 --> 00:19:22.250 It's never who the person is. Let's just say you're 00:19:56.900 --> 00:19:58.819 here this morning and you don't know Jesus.
