You've seen Steve Wetzel's 69 00:02:53.020 --> 00:02:57.120 Camaro and 48 Chevy truck, and all of you agree 00:02:57.120 --> 00:03:02.599 they are masterpieces. You've watched or seen 00:03:02.599 --> 00:03:06.819 highlights of a perfectly pitched game. And you 00:03:06.819 --> 00:03:11.340 thought to yourself, that is a masterpiece. So 00:03:11.340 --> 00:03:14.740 we've all seen masterpieces. We all know what 00:03:14.740 --> 00:03:18.099 they look like. And you think to yourself, I'm 00:03:18.099 --> 00:03:22.580 not one of those. I'm no masterpiece. Because every day, the people in 00:05:49.199 --> 00:05:52.829 that church had to walk past a masterpiece. They 00:05:52.829 --> 00:05:56.709 walked past the Temple of Artemis, a beautiful 00:05:56.709 --> 00:06:00.490 structure considered one of the seven wonders 00:06:00.490 --> 00:06:03.730 of the ancient world. Many people say that it 00:06:03.730 --> 00:06:07.529 took more than 120 years to build that work of 00:06:07.529 --> 00:06:11.269 art. And these people, they would walk by this 00:06:11.269 --> 00:06:13.449 structure, and they would point at it, and they 00:06:13.449 --> 00:06:17.110 would say, that's a masterpiece. And they were 00:06:17.110 --> 00:06:22.120 reminded of what we often feel. We often feel 00:06:22.120 --> 00:06:27.579 small, insignificant, inadequate, and unimportant. 00:06:28.660 --> 00:06:31.139 And then all of a sudden you throw in the social 00:06:31.139 --> 00:06:33.860 media craze of today and we're reminded every 00:06:33.860 --> 00:06:39.279 single day that I am not an influencer. Holy Spirit, come. God, I just pray 00:07:49.100 --> 00:07:51.120 that you would silence any distractions from 00:07:51.120 --> 00:07:53.819 the enemy. You would open our minds, our ears, 00:07:53.860 --> 00:07:56.040 more importantly, our hearts to receive your 00:07:56.040 --> 00:08:01.259 truth this morning. Change our outlook on life 00:08:01.259 --> 00:08:06.160 today. In Jesus' name, amen. That prayer leads 00:08:06.160 --> 00:08:08.939 us to our first thought, which is more bad news. 00:08:09.660 --> 00:08:14.000 Without Jesus, we are not good enough. See, the 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:16.879 Bible teaches us that without Jesus, we are incomplete, 00:08:17.240 --> 00:08:21.079 we are sinful, we are broken. And contrary to 00:08:21.079 --> 00:08:24.660 pop culture and pop theology, we're not enough 00:08:24.660 --> 00:08:28.399 without Jesus. In fact, the Bible tells us, Ephesians 00:08:28.399 --> 00:08:31.639 2, 1 through 3, once you were dead because of 00:08:31.639 --> 00:08:34.019 your disobedience and your many sins. In other 00:08:34.019 --> 00:08:36.980 words, without Jesus, you're spiritually dead, 00:08:37.059 --> 00:08:40.120 separated from God. Paul then continues, you 00:08:40.120 --> 00:08:41.899 used to live in sin just like the rest of the 00:08:41.899 --> 00:08:44.100 world, obeying the devil, the commander of the 00:08:44.100 --> 00:08:47.139 powers of the unseen world. He is the spirit 00:08:47.139 --> 00:08:49.580 at work in the hearts of those who refuse to 00:08:49.580 --> 00:08:52.620 obey God. He is the one that whispers in our 00:08:52.620 --> 00:08:55.879 ears, we're not good enough. All of us used to 00:08:55.879 --> 00:08:57.759 live that way, following the passionate desires 00:08:57.759 --> 00:09:00.840 and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our 00:09:00.840 --> 00:09:03.500 very nature, we are subject to God's anger just 00:09:03.500 --> 00:09:09.029 like everyone else. See, church, sometimes truth 00:09:09.029 --> 00:09:12.129 is difficult to share, especially when it's very 00:09:12.129 --> 00:09:15.950 unpopular in today's culture. But we're sinful. 00:09:16.769 --> 00:09:19.629 And that word sin comes from the Greek word hagios, 00:09:19.690 --> 00:09:24.710 and it simply means this, to miss the mark. To 00:09:24.710 --> 00:09:27.789 miss the mark. See, our God is a holy God. He's 00:09:27.789 --> 00:09:33.070 perfect in every way. And anytime we, we choose 00:09:33.070 --> 00:09:37.740 to ignore, disregard, disobey, what is written 00:09:37.740 --> 00:09:40.120 in the Bible, what the Holy Spirit speaks to 00:09:40.120 --> 00:09:45.200 us, the Bible calls that sin. Not popular by 00:09:45.200 --> 00:09:50.080 any means, but true. And what does sin do? Well, 00:09:50.100 --> 00:09:56.059 see, sin separates us from a holy God. And the 00:09:56.059 --> 00:09:59.919 reason I'm talking about this today is because 00:09:59.919 --> 00:10:03.980 within our culture, right, it's really big now 00:10:03.980 --> 00:10:07.350 to throw around self -esteem quotes. And not 00:10:07.350 --> 00:10:09.789 just self -esteem quotes, self -esteem videos, 00:10:10.350 --> 00:10:12.789 music videos, whatever it may be. They're everywhere 00:10:12.789 --> 00:10:16.470 online. And we all like to hear them because 00:10:16.470 --> 00:10:20.210 they make us feel good. And we think differently 00:10:20.210 --> 00:10:22.629 about ourself. Sometimes they can be motivating. 00:10:23.809 --> 00:10:26.769 But so many of the current cultural self -esteem 00:10:26.769 --> 00:10:31.049 quotes are simply empty words designed to convince 00:10:31.049 --> 00:10:35.580 us that we are okay. And the truth is, without 00:10:35.580 --> 00:10:40.419 Jesus, we're not okay. None of us are. We're 00:10:40.419 --> 00:10:43.879 broken. We're separated from God. We're dead 00:10:43.879 --> 00:10:46.919 in our sins. Paul writes in Romans chapter 3, 00:10:47.120 --> 00:10:51.240 everyone has sinned. We all fall short of God's 00:10:51.240 --> 00:10:55.080 glorious standard. Yet everywhere we look, there's 00:10:55.080 --> 00:10:58.659 messages about self -love, self -love, self -love. 00:10:59.159 --> 00:11:02.340 And hear me out. I hope and want you to feel 00:11:02.340 --> 00:11:05.840 better about yourself. But not just for yourself, 00:11:06.200 --> 00:11:10.120 but who Jesus can be inside of you. See, the 00:11:10.120 --> 00:11:14.620 message in our culture is about self -love. And 00:11:14.620 --> 00:11:17.340 eventually, if we just buy into that, we're lying 00:11:17.340 --> 00:11:20.259 to ourselves if we continue to say, I'm okay. 00:11:20.840 --> 00:11:24.779 You're okay. You're good enough. Because without 00:11:24.779 --> 00:11:28.379 Jesus, you're not enough. And then we simply 00:11:28.379 --> 00:11:36.090 lie to ourself, and we never love ourself. The 00:11:36.090 --> 00:11:39.549 Bible tells us we've sinned before a holy God. 00:11:40.450 --> 00:11:42.769 And we have to start there and acknowledge that 00:11:42.769 --> 00:11:46.169 truth. And it's so important because if we don't 00:11:46.169 --> 00:11:47.990 admit that you're a sinner, if we don't admit 00:11:47.990 --> 00:11:50.190 that we have sinned, then we don't have a need 00:11:50.190 --> 00:11:55.250 for a savior. Who is Jesus? He is the one who 00:11:55.250 --> 00:11:59.549 saves us from our sins, from our brokenness. 00:11:59.870 --> 00:12:02.610 And without Jesus, we have no hope of saving 00:12:02.610 --> 00:12:06.019 ourselves. Because church, we can never be good 00:12:06.019 --> 00:12:08.980 enough. We can never say enough nice things. 00:12:10.740 --> 00:12:15.139 The Bible tells us there is very, very good news 00:12:15.139 --> 00:12:17.039 though, which leads us to our second thought. 00:12:17.419 --> 00:12:22.279 See, God sent his son for us. John 3, 16, for 00:12:22.279 --> 00:12:24.600 this is how God loved the world. He gave his 00:12:24.600 --> 00:12:28.299 one and only son and notice God gave him so that 00:12:28.299 --> 00:12:30.120 everyone who believes in him will not perish 00:12:30.120 --> 00:12:33.809 but have eternal life. And I emphatically want 00:12:33.809 --> 00:12:36.009 to tell you this this morning. I want you to 00:12:36.009 --> 00:12:40.289 hear it. You are loved right now, right where 00:12:40.289 --> 00:12:44.690 you are. You don't have to clean yourself up. 00:12:44.789 --> 00:12:46.649 You don't have to have a better version of yourself. 00:12:46.830 --> 00:12:51.690 You are loved just as you are. Paul says it this 00:12:51.690 --> 00:12:55.909 way in Ephesians 2, verse 4. He writes this, 00:12:56.049 --> 00:13:02.220 but God. And this is so good. Because notice 00:13:02.220 --> 00:13:07.460 he started in verses one through two that it 00:13:07.460 --> 00:13:10.340 was bad news. That we can't do it on our own. 00:13:10.460 --> 00:13:13.320 But then he transitions and in verse four he 00:13:13.320 --> 00:13:19.379 says, but God. But God is so rich in mercy and 00:13:19.379 --> 00:13:21.320 he loved us so much that even though we were 00:13:21.320 --> 00:13:23.960 dead because of our sins, he gave us life when 00:13:23.960 --> 00:13:26.820 he raised Christ from the dead. It is only by 00:13:26.820 --> 00:13:29.679 God's grace you have been saved. How are we made 00:13:29.679 --> 00:13:34.899 right with God? Scripture says, but God. But 00:13:34.899 --> 00:13:37.759 God, it is only by grace that we've been, what? 00:13:38.159 --> 00:13:42.100 Saved. And I need to explain this point because 00:13:42.100 --> 00:13:44.840 it's very, very important. Because remember, 00:13:44.960 --> 00:13:47.120 the Bible teaches us you can never be good enough. 00:13:48.480 --> 00:13:51.480 No matter how righteous you are, no matter the 00:13:51.480 --> 00:13:53.899 attempts that you make to be good, you're not 00:13:53.899 --> 00:13:57.700 good enough. The Old Testament, Isaiah 64, 6 00:13:57.700 --> 00:14:01.460 is a reminder. that our best isn't good enough. 00:14:02.019 --> 00:14:07.720 We need him. We need God. Isaiah 64, 6 says, 00:14:07.799 --> 00:14:10.600 all of us have become like one who is unclean, 00:14:10.600 --> 00:14:13.159 and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags. 00:14:15.159 --> 00:14:20.299 Even our best efforts, whether we help the elderly, 00:14:20.559 --> 00:14:24.519 whether we open the door for someone, our morality, 00:14:24.740 --> 00:14:28.809 our church attendance, They're all described 00:14:28.809 --> 00:14:32.929 as filthy rags. And you say, Chris, why? Why 00:14:32.929 --> 00:14:34.529 are they described as filthy rags? Because in 00:14:34.529 --> 00:14:36.870 the Old Testament, Isaiah was challenging the 00:14:36.870 --> 00:14:41.129 people that they weren't focused on God. They 00:14:41.129 --> 00:14:43.149 had drifted. They were doing it all in their 00:14:43.149 --> 00:14:46.789 own strength. They were trying to earn their 00:14:46.789 --> 00:14:51.049 way to him. And this is a reminder that we don't 00:14:51.049 --> 00:14:55.950 earn anything. It's been given to us. We don't 00:14:55.950 --> 00:14:59.070 fall short because we're trying our worst. We 00:14:59.070 --> 00:15:03.490 fall short because we try our best. We can never 00:15:03.490 --> 00:15:07.090 be holy enough. We can never be perfect enough. 00:15:07.789 --> 00:15:12.289 How do I know that? Because you can stop swearing 00:15:12.289 --> 00:15:16.929 and still lust. You can stop lusting and start 00:15:16.929 --> 00:15:20.509 judging. You can stop judging and start and still 00:15:20.509 --> 00:15:24.059 complain. You can stop complaining and then find 00:15:24.059 --> 00:15:26.279 yourself spending way too much and drowning in 00:15:26.279 --> 00:15:31.700 debt. It doesn't matter what it is. You can set 00:15:31.700 --> 00:15:35.779 aside a portion of your chips, eat the portion, 00:15:35.840 --> 00:15:40.240 and realize, I need the whole bag. Because we're 00:15:40.240 --> 00:15:43.700 sinful people. No matter how hard we try, our 00:15:43.700 --> 00:15:47.399 sinful nature, what to do, it pulls us away from 00:15:47.399 --> 00:15:50.759 the heart of God. We cannot be enough, give enough, 00:15:50.960 --> 00:15:53.360 pray enough, be holy enough because we're not 00:15:53.360 --> 00:15:57.500 enough. Without Jesus, we are not enough. Paul 00:15:57.500 --> 00:15:59.480 writes it this way in Romans chapter five, verses 00:15:59.480 --> 00:16:02.659 eight and 11. And notice, notice church, the 00:16:02.659 --> 00:16:06.059 connection in Paul's writing between Romans and 00:16:06.059 --> 00:16:08.120 Ephesians. Notice how he starts off verse eight, 00:16:08.360 --> 00:16:12.240 but God. And what's he trying to remind us of? 00:16:12.320 --> 00:16:15.559 He said, it's but God. But God showed his great 00:16:15.559 --> 00:16:17.960 love for us by sending Christ to die for us while 00:16:17.960 --> 00:16:22.299 we were still sinners. So now, what can we do 00:16:22.299 --> 00:16:27.799 now? We can rejoice. We can rejoice in our wonderful 00:16:27.799 --> 00:16:29.820 new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus 00:16:29.820 --> 00:16:33.519 Christ has made us friends with God. Friends, 00:16:33.580 --> 00:16:37.809 this is good news. And it's good news that God 00:16:37.809 --> 00:16:40.590 wants us to not only embrace, not only accept, 00:16:40.850 --> 00:16:43.230 but live out. Because when we live this out, 00:16:43.289 --> 00:16:47.029 we change the world. Which leads us to our key 00:16:47.029 --> 00:16:50.250 verse and action steps. How do we defeat self 00:16:50.250 --> 00:16:53.789 -doubt? How do we defeat those voices in our 00:16:53.789 --> 00:16:58.669 mind that tell us you're no good? Well, first, 00:16:58.730 --> 00:17:04.559 you got to accept I am a masterpiece. You've 00:17:04.559 --> 00:17:06.640 got to accept it. You've got to receive it. You've 00:17:06.640 --> 00:17:09.480 got to apply it. Ephesians 2 .10, we are God's 00:17:09.480 --> 00:17:13.099 masterpiece. And the bad news, again, without 00:17:13.099 --> 00:17:15.160 Jesus, you're not enough. The good news, with 00:17:15.160 --> 00:17:18.480 Jesus, you're not enough. You're his masterpiece. 00:17:19.259 --> 00:17:22.440 You are a masterpiece of God in Christ Jesus. 00:17:23.099 --> 00:17:26.619 So with Christ, with Jesus, in that relationship, 00:17:27.099 --> 00:17:29.900 you don't just become good enough. You don't 00:17:29.900 --> 00:17:36.690 just become average. Masterpiece. Now, what does 00:17:36.690 --> 00:17:39.509 that mean? Well, the word masterpiece comes from 00:17:39.509 --> 00:17:43.450 the Greek word poema. And you can hear it in 00:17:43.450 --> 00:17:46.589 there. We get our word poetry from that word. 00:17:46.809 --> 00:17:49.670 So it's a beautiful word. And a good translation 00:17:49.670 --> 00:17:55.150 of poema is this.
