You possibly could have 00:02:14.550 --> 00:02:17.849 seen an oil rig worker washing the feet of a 00:02:17.849 --> 00:02:21.289 climate activist. Maybe you saw an older woman 00:02:21.289 --> 00:02:25.610 washing the feet of a young woman outside an 00:02:25.610 --> 00:02:29.650 abortion clinic. And I find it interesting that 00:02:29.650 --> 00:02:33.580 as that commercial played, Once it was debuted, 00:02:33.819 --> 00:02:37.400 the biggest uproar and complaints came from the 00:02:37.400 --> 00:02:44.819 church, the Christian community. The ad was made 00:02:44.819 --> 00:02:49.280 by He Gets Us. It's a campaign of establishing 00:02:49.280 --> 00:02:54.520 a story, and their goal is simply to reintroduce 00:02:54.520 --> 00:03:00.139 our society to Jesus. I personally believe this 00:03:00.139 --> 00:03:04.020 ad made Christians uncomfortable because it made 00:03:04.020 --> 00:03:08.500 them realize that Jesus would have actually washed 00:03:08.500 --> 00:03:14.240 the feet of those said individuals, and they 00:03:14.240 --> 00:03:17.879 wouldn't. They wouldn't find themselves near 00:03:17.879 --> 00:03:21.759 them. And for Jesus to wash the feet of these 00:03:21.759 --> 00:03:26.659 individuals, the Christian community would deem 00:03:26.659 --> 00:03:32.900 that unimaginable. Impossible. When in reality, 00:03:32.919 --> 00:03:39.740 the commercial wasn't about he getting us. It 00:03:39.740 --> 00:03:44.300 was more about do we get him? Do we truly understand 00:03:44.300 --> 00:03:50.539 the way of Jesus? Because foot washing is what 00:03:50.539 --> 00:03:55.379 Jesus is all about. See, Jesus did the unimaginable. 00:03:56.810 --> 00:04:00.409 He washed the feet of his disciples to demonstrate 00:04:00.409 --> 00:04:06.250 to his followers this unglamorous act is actually 00:04:06.250 --> 00:04:09.310 how we should treat each other. And more importantly, 00:04:09.509 --> 00:04:15.210 how we should love our enemies. I mean, just 00:04:15.210 --> 00:04:20.350 think about it. Jesus washed Judas' feet who 00:04:20.350 --> 00:04:24.569 that very night would betray him. Jesus knew 00:04:24.569 --> 00:04:30.000 it was coming. Yet he chose to wash Judas' feet 00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:35.819 anyway. And when Jesus washed the remaining feet 00:04:35.819 --> 00:04:41.220 of his disciples, that simple act caused an uproar 00:04:41.220 --> 00:04:46.759 from them because rabbis don't wash feet. And 00:04:46.759 --> 00:04:49.560 more importantly, the Savior, the Messiah, would 00:04:49.560 --> 00:04:54.720 never be caught washing feet. And see, the disciples 00:04:54.720 --> 00:04:57.329 couldn't... They couldn't handle the power reversal, 00:04:57.470 --> 00:05:02.589 the upside down nature of the kingdom. Because 00:05:02.589 --> 00:05:08.110 this simple act of humility, which Jesus instructed 00:05:08.110 --> 00:05:11.889 his followers to continue, is still causing an 00:05:11.889 --> 00:05:17.350 uproar in our society today. Why? Well, because 00:05:17.350 --> 00:05:21.990 the way of Jesus goes against the grain. It does 00:05:21.990 --> 00:05:26.939 not follow political agendas. It especially doesn't 00:05:26.939 --> 00:05:31.040 follow humanity's selfish tendencies, and it 00:05:31.040 --> 00:05:36.379 challenges people to change. We're going to be reading through the original 00:07:10.639 --> 00:07:13.879 gospel account of Jesus' foot -watching, which 00:07:13.879 --> 00:07:17.860 took place on the night of Passover, just hours 00:07:17.860 --> 00:07:21.120 before Jesus would be betrayed into the hands 00:07:21.120 --> 00:07:27.160 of religious leaders. As I was standing in the 00:07:27.160 --> 00:07:31.579 back worshiping this morning, a sense of expectancy 00:07:31.579 --> 00:07:39.399 came over me. And I'm not really sure what that's 00:07:39.399 --> 00:07:42.800 about, but I believe that God has something special 00:07:42.800 --> 00:07:46.500 for us this morning. And I'm expectant to see 00:07:46.500 --> 00:07:55.290 the Holy Spirit move. So Holy Spirit, come. God, 00:07:55.350 --> 00:08:00.990 unplug our ears. Open our minds. More importantly, 00:08:01.089 --> 00:08:05.370 reveal our hearts to us as we desire to draw 00:08:05.370 --> 00:08:11.189 close to you. Move in this place, God. Our first thought this morning. 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:27.939 See, God's kingdom is upside down. We will be 00:08:27.939 --> 00:08:30.120 reading from the book of John. And of course, 00:08:30.120 --> 00:08:33.740 John was one of Jesus' original 12 disciples 00:08:33.740 --> 00:08:37.740 and one of his biographers. And in chapter 13, 00:08:38.059 --> 00:08:41.700 he wrote about a time when Jesus was having dinner 00:08:41.700 --> 00:08:45.360 with his disciples celebrating Passover. It would 00:08:45.360 --> 00:08:48.639 be the last time that Jesus would eat with them. 00:08:49.480 --> 00:08:54.860 before his death. John describes the account 00:08:54.860 --> 00:08:59.200 this way in John chapter 13. Jesus knew that 00:08:59.200 --> 00:09:01.600 the Father had given him authority over everything 00:09:01.600 --> 00:09:04.779 that he had come from God and would return to 00:09:04.779 --> 00:09:09.740 God. So he got up from the table, took off his 00:09:09.740 --> 00:09:13.139 robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured 00:09:13.139 --> 00:09:17.610 water into a basin. Then he began to wash the 00:09:17.610 --> 00:09:21.110 disciples' feet, drying them with the towel he 00:09:21.110 --> 00:09:26.750 had around him. Just a question for you to ponder. 00:09:28.210 --> 00:09:32.850 What would you do if you were the most powerful 00:09:32.850 --> 00:09:39.429 person in this room? Would you host a party for 00:09:39.429 --> 00:09:44.610 yourself and invite everyone to come? See, powerful people 00:10:03.129 --> 00:10:06.809 within our society may do those things, but Jesus, 00:10:06.929 --> 00:10:11.529 Jesus wrapped a towel around his waist, got down 00:10:11.529 --> 00:10:16.460 on one knee, and watched dirty, stinky feet. 00:10:18.200 --> 00:10:20.519 Now we're talking about the king of the universe, 00:10:20.820 --> 00:10:25.279 the God who set our world in motion, actually 00:10:25.279 --> 00:10:29.639 creating the disciples' feet. And where do we 00:10:29.639 --> 00:10:35.899 find it? At the lowest possible position, washing 00:10:35.899 --> 00:10:43.460 their feet. Now why would he do this? Because 00:10:43.460 --> 00:10:47.039 see, in ancient times, people traveled by foot 00:10:47.039 --> 00:10:50.679 everywhere they went. Now the wealthier individuals 00:10:50.679 --> 00:10:53.919 would be wearing sandals, but you and I, chances 00:10:53.919 --> 00:10:57.440 are, we'd have nothing on our feet. And the dirty, 00:10:57.500 --> 00:11:01.960 dusty roads left their feet coated with dirt, 00:11:02.139 --> 00:11:07.080 grime, and mud. Which is why travelers, upon 00:11:07.080 --> 00:11:09.500 reaching their destination, they would be greeted 00:11:09.500 --> 00:11:13.120 by a host carrying a basin of water. to wash 00:11:13.120 --> 00:11:17.559 their feet. It was a simple gesture of welcome 00:11:17.559 --> 00:11:22.179 and kindness, not to mention the means of keeping 00:11:22.179 --> 00:11:25.559 dirt out of the home. Now in the homes of the 00:11:25.559 --> 00:11:28.639 wealthy or the powerful, this task was given 00:11:28.639 --> 00:11:33.779 to a servant or a slave or maybe the wife of 00:11:33.779 --> 00:11:38.899 the host. Which is why Jesus' decision to wash 00:11:38.899 --> 00:11:44.299 the disciples' feet It wasn't just humbling. 00:11:44.899 --> 00:11:47.580 It actually would have been viewed as humiliating. 00:11:48.460 --> 00:11:54.039 The Son of God intentionally chose the lowly, 00:11:54.039 --> 00:12:00.320 demeaning task of a common house servant. Lord 00:12:00.320 --> 00:12:04.820 Jesus literally kneeled down to wash, rinse, 00:12:05.039 --> 00:12:11.279 and towel dry the dirty, cracked, smelly, sore 00:12:11.279 --> 00:12:14.750 feet. of a group of outcasts and forgotten within 00:12:14.750 --> 00:12:20.610 that society. The lowest of lows. And this was 00:12:20.610 --> 00:12:23.210 the man the disciples believed to be the long 00:12:23.210 --> 00:12:27.450 -awaited ruler, who, according to biblical prophecy, 00:12:27.690 --> 00:12:32.190 would deliver Israel from its oppressors, the 00:12:32.190 --> 00:12:37.620 Romans. This was the God -man. So when Jesus 00:12:37.620 --> 00:12:42.059 begins to wash their feet, it was so incomprehensible 00:12:42.059 --> 00:12:45.519 to their way of thinking, so contrary to the 00:12:45.519 --> 00:12:49.179 culture which they lived, so offensive to their 00:12:49.179 --> 00:12:51.860 understanding of who this person should be that 00:12:51.860 --> 00:12:55.240 they just didn't even get it. They didn't understand 00:12:55.240 --> 00:13:00.940 it. Why? Well, we now know it's because God's 00:13:00.940 --> 00:13:06.500 kingdom is upside down. Both cultural custom 00:13:06.500 --> 00:13:09.940 and religious etiquette dictated that only a 00:13:09.940 --> 00:13:14.059 common slave, not even a Jewish slave, should 00:13:14.059 --> 00:13:18.759 perform this degrading task. No exalted man of 00:13:18.759 --> 00:13:21.700 God would stoop so low and perform such a lowly 00:13:21.700 --> 00:13:26.539 task. We know that from reading through the Gospels. 00:13:26.539 --> 00:13:29.840 When we read the parable of the Good Samaritan, 00:13:29.919 --> 00:13:32.620 the religious leaders walked on the other side. 00:13:35.629 --> 00:13:39.669 But Jesus was unlike any other king or revolutionary. 00:13:40.370 --> 00:13:45.549 His choice to wash the disciples' feet is a vivid 00:13:45.549 --> 00:13:49.070 demonstration of how Jesus' followers should 00:13:49.070 --> 00:13:51.710 live every day in this upside -down kingdom. 00:13:53.389 --> 00:13:57.669 See, the reason the commercial drew so much negative 00:13:57.669 --> 00:14:01.470 feedback from the Christian community? Conviction. 00:14:03.320 --> 00:14:07.220 conviction from the Holy Spirit that that's how 00:14:07.220 --> 00:14:10.259 I should be living. Because in God's kingdom, 00:14:10.440 --> 00:14:16.580 the way up is the way down. You want to be great? 00:14:17.779 --> 00:14:22.100 Then serve the least of these. And that is why 00:14:22.100 --> 00:14:26.679 Jesus washed Peter's feet, who would later deny 00:14:26.679 --> 00:14:33.450 him. That is why Jesus washed Judas' feet, who 00:14:33.450 --> 00:14:40.889 would later betray him for 30 silver coins. See, 00:14:40.909 --> 00:14:44.389 our second thought, Jesus, he was a servant leader. 00:14:45.529 --> 00:14:49.190 He knew that the Father had given him authority 00:14:49.190 --> 00:14:53.149 over everything. He'd come from God, would return 00:14:53.149 --> 00:14:57.070 to God. So he got up from the table, took off 00:14:57.070 --> 00:14:58.950 his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and 00:14:58.950 --> 00:15:03.070 poured water into a basin. He began to wash the 00:15:03.070 --> 00:15:05.929 disciples' feet, drying them with a towel he 00:15:05.929 --> 00:15:09.970 had around him. See, for Jesus, nothing was beneath 00:15:09.970 --> 00:15:14.889 him. It's the way of downward mobility. And he 00:15:14.889 --> 00:15:18.750 is demonstrating for his disciples, this is the 00:15:18.750 --> 00:15:23.370 way of abundant life. This. He's challenging 00:15:23.370 --> 00:15:26.230 his followers to lay down their pride. Get over 00:15:26.230 --> 00:15:31.690 yourself. Sacrifice your egos, your very lives, 00:15:31.909 --> 00:15:39.730 humbly serving one another. Listen to Jesus' 00:15:40.129 --> 00:15:45.570 response to two brothers arguing over who would 00:15:45.570 --> 00:15:48.230 be the greatest in the kingdom in Matthew chapter 00:15:48.230 --> 00:15:51.759 20. But Jesus, He called them together. You can 00:15:51.759 --> 00:15:55.940 almost view this as a huddle. And He says, you 00:15:55.940 --> 00:15:58.500 know that the rulers in this world lord it over 00:15:58.500 --> 00:16:00.679 their people and officials flaunt their authority 00:16:00.679 --> 00:16:04.559 over those under them. But among you, church, 00:16:04.720 --> 00:16:08.279 it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader 00:16:08.279 --> 00:16:10.860 among you must be your servant and whoever wants 00:16:10.860 --> 00:16:14.600 to be first among you must become your slave. 00:16:16.110 --> 00:16:19.169 For even the Son of Man came not to be served, 00:16:19.429 --> 00:16:23.470 but to serve others and give his life as a ransom 00:16:23.470 --> 00:16:31.049 for many. See, in God's kingdom, serving is not 00:16:31.049 --> 00:16:36.990 about control or power. It has nothing to do 00:16:36.990 --> 00:16:39.289 with it. When it comes to following Jesus, it's 00:16:39.289 --> 00:16:42.269 supposed to be different. We're to view ourselves 00:16:42.269 --> 00:16:48.679 as servants or slaves of others. And you're like, 00:16:48.759 --> 00:16:50.740 Chris, why would I be a slave to someone else? 00:16:50.779 --> 00:16:57.139 So they can see Jesus inside of us. When it comes 00:16:57.139 --> 00:17:01.200 to our relationship with Jesus, our focus becomes 00:17:01.200 --> 00:17:06.180 the kingdom. The kingdom of God forcefully advancing 00:17:06.180 --> 00:17:10.960 and how one decision can change a life for eternity. 00:17:14.349 --> 00:17:18.910 But unfortunately, we now know our third thought, 00:17:18.970 --> 00:17:26.829 the church, is full of spiritual consumers. See, 00:17:26.910 --> 00:17:31.049 Simon Peter knew this task of foot washing should 00:17:31.049 --> 00:17:34.109 not be performed by Jesus when he spoke these 00:17:34.109 --> 00:17:38.289 words in John 13, 6 -10. When Jesus came to Simon 00:17:38.289 --> 00:17:41.730 Peter, Peter said to him, Lord, are you going 00:17:41.730 --> 00:17:45.329 to wash my feet? So he's questioning what Jesus 00:17:45.329 --> 00:17:48.990 is doing. Jesus replied, you don't understand 00:17:48.990 --> 00:17:52.529 now what I am doing, but someday you will. Now 00:17:52.529 --> 00:17:58.289 notice Peter's response. No, Peter protested. 00:17:58.289 --> 00:18:01.829 You will never, ever wash my feet. Exclamation 00:18:01.829 --> 00:18:05.470 point. Literally, he's raising his voice. He 00:18:05.470 --> 00:18:12.890 is getting riled up towards Jesus. But you can 00:18:12.890 --> 00:18:18.309 picture Jesus replying, well, unless I wash you, 00:18:18.369 --> 00:18:22.650 you won't belong to me. But again, look, Simon 00:18:22.650 --> 00:18:27.410 Peter exclaimed, John is writing this narrative 00:18:27.410 --> 00:18:30.269 where we see Peter lashing out, then wash my 00:18:30.269 --> 00:18:32.430 hands and my head as well, Lord, not just my 00:18:32.430 --> 00:18:40.420 feet. Again, Jesus replies, a person who is bathed 00:18:40.420 --> 00:18:42.940 all over, does not need to wash except for the 00:18:42.940 --> 00:18:48.640 feet to be entirely clean. See, Peter, he was 00:18:48.640 --> 00:18:53.960 only focused on himself. He was focused on what 00:18:53.960 --> 00:18:58.720 he was going to get out of Jesus' actions to 00:18:58.720 --> 00:19:03.180 wash feet. And in Peter's response, we unfortunately 00:19:03.180 --> 00:19:05.880 see the way of the Western church, which has 00:19:05.880 --> 00:19:10.519 become consumer Christianity. Feed me. Give me 00:19:10.519 --> 00:19:14.039 what I want. Make me feel good. Give me that 00:19:14.039 --> 00:19:18.059 encounter. But don't expect anything from me 00:19:18.059 --> 00:19:24.059 on Monday. And see, when Jesus asked the disciples 00:19:24.059 --> 00:19:26.779 in verse 12, do you understand what I was doing? 00:19:26.880 --> 00:19:29.740 The answer, of course, is no. They didn't understand. 00:19:30.359 --> 00:19:33.859 Because their mindset was that people would be 00:19:33.859 --> 00:19:36.759 serving them. No, Jesus, you don't serve me. 00:19:36.799 --> 00:19:40.920 We get served. After all, we're following the 00:19:40.920 --> 00:19:47.160 Messiah, the Savior of the world. And now suddenly, 00:19:47.259 --> 00:19:49.400 though, with this example, Jesus is telling them, 00:19:49.680 --> 00:19:53.859 no, you have to serve each other. That's the 00:19:53.859 --> 00:19:58.019 way of following me. But unfortunately, this 00:19:58.019 --> 00:20:01.519 attitude the disciples had has become a part 00:20:01.519 --> 00:20:04.079 of the Western church, and many in the church 00:20:04.079 --> 00:20:08.089 have become spiritual consumers. People who look 00:20:08.089 --> 00:20:14.250 for churches to meet their needs. They come in 00:20:14.250 --> 00:20:16.849 and they listen to the music. Are they playing 00:20:16.849 --> 00:20:19.470 the right songs? Do they sing classic hymns? 00:20:19.490 --> 00:20:22.049 Is it modern worship? Are the vocals too loud? 00:20:22.109 --> 00:20:25.170 Are the drums too loud? Do I need earmuffs? What 00:20:25.170 --> 00:20:32.269 is happening here? Is the message built around 00:20:32.269 --> 00:20:35.769 how I feel? Or does it only focus on truth? Because 00:20:35.769 --> 00:20:39.690 if it focuses on truth, I'm out. I have children. 00:20:40.289 --> 00:20:43.809 What does the church do for them? Are they cared 00:20:43.809 --> 00:20:45.930 for? Are they safe during the service? Because 00:20:45.930 --> 00:20:51.809 I need my time to focus on God. See, spiritual 00:20:51.809 --> 00:20:56.549 consumerism places one's personal needs and desires 00:20:56.549 --> 00:21:01.710 at the center of God's universe. Instead of Jesus' 00:21:01.890 --> 00:21:06.789 example to us here, with foot washing. See, Jesus 00:21:06.789 --> 00:21:10.190 isn't looking for members to casually join an 00:21:10.190 --> 00:21:12.529 organization and occasionally attend their meetings. 00:21:13.410 --> 00:21:17.250 He is looking for people who will lay down their 00:21:17.250 --> 00:21:22.529 lives to follow him on mission together with 00:21:22.529 --> 00:21:28.130 others. He wants imitators, not admirers. He 00:21:28.130 --> 00:21:32.440 wants followers, not consumers. He wants family 00:21:32.440 --> 00:21:37.920 members on mission, not casual meeting attenders. 00:21:38.579 --> 00:21:41.920 See, Jesus is showing his disciples, you and 00:21:41.920 --> 00:21:45.420 me, the entire church, how to move away from 00:21:45.420 --> 00:21:49.539 being spiritual consumers to spiritual contributors, 00:21:49.700 --> 00:21:53.720 which is our final thought. See, God, he desires 00:21:53.720 --> 00:21:58.480 his church to be spiritual contributors. In the 00:21:58.480 --> 00:22:02.160 final verse of this teaching, we see Jesus challenging 00:22:02.160 --> 00:22:06.539 his disciples, do the same. John 13, 14 to 15 00:22:06.539 --> 00:22:10.140 and 17. And since I, your Lord and teacher, have 00:22:10.140 --> 00:22:13.019 washed your feet, you ought to wash each other's 00:22:13.019 --> 00:22:17.079 feet. I've given you an example to follow. Do 00:22:17.079 --> 00:22:21.799 as I've done to you. And then verse 17. Now that 00:22:21.799 --> 00:22:27.920 you know these things, God will bless you. for 00:22:27.920 --> 00:22:34.420 doing them. So this morning, is your life the 00:29:14.180 --> 00:29:18.539 Jordan River or the Dead Sea? Because see, the 00:29:18.539 --> 00:29:21.400 Jordan River is an active body of water flowing 00:29:21.400 --> 00:29:25.299 from north to south. The Dead Sea, on the other 00:29:25.299 --> 00:29:29.539 hand, has no outlets. Water comes in from the 00:29:29.539 --> 00:29:33.220 north to the lowest point in the world and doesn't 00:29:33.220 --> 00:29:38.380 flow out. The water is stagnant, smelly, and 00:29:38.380 --> 00:29:42.240 dries up. So you're either flowing like the Jordan 00:29:42.240 --> 00:29:45.940 River as God uses you to impact the lives of 00:29:45.940 --> 00:29:49.000 other people for his kingdom, or you're stagnant 00:29:49.000 --> 00:29:52.900 and lifeless like the Dead Sea. And see, if we're 00:29:52.900 --> 00:29:55.259 continually growing closer to Jesus and learning 00:29:55.259 --> 00:29:57.819 more about him, you have one or two options. 00:29:58.500 --> 00:30:03.819 You can hoard what you've learned and keep it 00:30:03.819 --> 00:30:07.759 for yourself, or you can give it away as a benefit 00:30:07.759 --> 00:30:10.940 to others. Because see, here's the reality. Just yesterday, we opened our doors 00:32:21.569 --> 00:32:26.390 for a memorial service, a celebration of life 00:32:26.390 --> 00:32:29.950 for people that don't even go to this community 00:32:29.950 --> 00:32:36.289 of faith. And it was over 500 people here to 00:32:36.289 --> 00:32:43.559 celebrate a woman of God. And we do that because 00:32:43.559 --> 00:32:49.240 we welcome the community. Last week I shared 00:32:49.240 --> 00:32:53.339 about a man that God supernaturally healed his 00:32:53.339 --> 00:32:58.700 heart. Every single week I give words of knowledge 00:32:58.700 --> 00:33:00.799 and people come up here to our prayer team and 00:33:00.799 --> 00:33:08.019 receive healing every single week. Last January 00:33:08.019 --> 00:33:15.609 we baptized 63 people. And we already have upwards 00:33:15.609 --> 00:33:19.509 of 30 signed up for Good Friday. And some of 00:33:19.509 --> 00:33:23.130 you need to make that decision because you're 00:33:23.130 --> 00:33:29.630 realizing you're a consumer. See, God is motivating 00:33:29.630 --> 00:33:33.450 us. to change, and we're called to celebrate 00:33:33.450 --> 00:33:37.109 what he's doing in our midst. The author of Hebrews 00:33:37.109 --> 00:33:39.970 writes it this way in Hebrews 13. Therefore, 00:33:40.089 --> 00:33:44.170 let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice 00:33:44.170 --> 00:33:47.869 of praise to God, the fruit of lips that give 00:33:47.869 --> 00:33:51.950 thanks to his name, and don't forget to do good 00:33:51.950 --> 00:33:54.809 and to share with those in need. These are the 00:33:54.809 --> 00:34:01.160 sacrifices of what pleases God.
