Heavenly Father, I thank you for 00:00:37.219 --> 00:00:39.979 who you are. There's so much that we need to 00:01:06.260 --> 00:01:08.299 learn about being led by the Holy Spirit and 00:01:08.299 --> 00:01:10.379 I think that continues on through our walk with 00:01:10.379 --> 00:01:12.620 God. I've been a Christian for a long time, but 00:01:12.620 --> 00:01:15.480 I still need to learn something every day through 00:01:15.480 --> 00:01:17.579 the word of God and through the leading of the 00:01:17.579 --> 00:01:20.579 Holy Spirit to help me to follow exactly what 00:01:20.579 --> 00:01:23.099 God wants when it comes to the Holy Spirit leading 00:01:23.099 --> 00:01:25.500 my life. Now the Apostle Paul kind of laid the 00:01:25.500 --> 00:01:28.680 foundation of what the transition was from the 00:01:28.680 --> 00:01:32.519 law to the new covenant of grace. We read about 00:01:32.519 --> 00:01:35.579 it in 2 Corinthians chapter 3 and verse 6 in 00:01:35.579 --> 00:01:37.780 the New Living Translation. Remember these are 00:01:37.780 --> 00:01:39.579 the words of the Apostle Paul. Here's what it 00:01:39.579 --> 00:01:42.620 says, he has, now that's God has, so God has 00:01:42.620 --> 00:01:45.879 enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant. 00:01:46.040 --> 00:01:49.060 This is a covenant not of written laws, but of 00:01:49.060 --> 00:01:50.859 the Spirit. Now that's talking about the Holy 00:01:50.859 --> 00:01:53.359 Spirit is going to lead us and direct us. The 00:01:53.359 --> 00:01:56.620 old law said there were strict laws and directions 00:01:56.620 --> 00:01:59.799 underneath the laws of Moses, but Paul is telling 00:01:59.819 --> 00:02:03.400 us that now there is a new covenant, a grace 00:02:03.400 --> 00:02:05.819 covenant, and that's being led by the Holy Spirit. 00:02:05.900 --> 00:02:08.199 So this is a covenant not of written laws but 00:02:08.199 --> 00:02:10.379 of the Spirit. And the scripture continues, the 00:02:10.379 --> 00:02:13.539 old written covenant ends in death, but under 00:02:13.539 --> 00:02:16.259 the new covenant, the Spirit gives life. In his 00:02:16.259 --> 00:02:19.439 scripture, Paul is telling us that the Holy Spirit 00:02:19.439 --> 00:02:22.319 changed things. You see, before Jesus left, remember, 00:02:22.340 --> 00:02:25.439 he told his disciples that he had to go to the 00:02:25.439 --> 00:02:27.699 Father, but that he would leave Christians the 00:02:27.699 --> 00:02:30.460 Holy Spirit, the Comforter. Now, Paul is telling 00:02:30.460 --> 00:02:33.659 us in 2 Corinthians chapter 3 and verse 6 that 00:02:33.659 --> 00:02:37.699 God made Christians capable of ministering the 00:02:37.699 --> 00:02:40.520 new covenant. the new covenant of grace brought 00:02:40.520 --> 00:02:43.400 on by the Holy Spirit that Jesus changed the 00:02:43.400 --> 00:02:46.719 old laws to a new covenant of grace the words 00:02:46.719 --> 00:02:49.979 the old written covenant that were that I read 00:02:49.979 --> 00:02:52.780 in scripture basically refer to the law of Moses 00:02:52.780 --> 00:02:56.060 the words under the new covenant which is greater 00:02:56.060 --> 00:02:58.060 leads to life they're basically telling us that 00:02:58.060 --> 00:03:01.080 the Holy Spirit is is the one who brings the 00:03:01.080 --> 00:03:04.240 new covenant of grace to new believers the new 00:03:04.240 --> 00:03:07.680 covenant is the Holy Spirit leading the gospel 00:03:07.819 --> 00:03:10.280 grace. Now I know maybe that's a little technical, 00:03:10.280 --> 00:03:12.699 maybe it's a little bit more theology than some 00:03:12.699 --> 00:03:14.599 want, but it's so important to understand that 00:03:14.599 --> 00:03:17.500 the transition was made because of the Holy Spirit, 00:03:17.520 --> 00:03:20.719 through the Holy Spirit, and He changed the whole 00:03:20.719 --> 00:03:23.759 pattern of life, the whole mindset of individuals. 00:03:24.180 --> 00:03:26.460 It's amazing radical change that took place then 00:03:26.460 --> 00:03:29.379 and that is still taking place to this day. Our 00:03:29.379 --> 00:03:31.900 lives can be radically changed by the power of 00:03:31.900 --> 00:03:34.340 the Holy Spirit and the grace of the Holy Spirit 00:03:34.340 --> 00:03:36.939 to lead us and guide us. I believe what I just 00:03:36.939 --> 00:03:40.979 read basically lays the foundation or the groundwork, 00:03:41.080 --> 00:03:44.080 if you will, for understanding this podcast on 00:03:44.080 --> 00:03:47.360 a Holy Spirit -led life. Now we cannot understand 00:03:47.360 --> 00:03:51.259 how to be led by the Holy Spirit without surrendering 00:03:51.259 --> 00:03:54.000 our thoughts and our actions to the Holy Spirit. 00:03:54.080 --> 00:03:56.120 There's a step of surrender that we must take. 00:03:56.139 --> 00:03:58.740 We've got to deny self and move closer to God. 00:03:58.919 --> 00:04:02.319 There are three, I believe, critical ways to 00:04:02.319 --> 00:04:04.800 be led by the Spirit of God. There's a lot more 00:04:04.800 --> 00:04:06.849 than three, but here's three basic fundamental 00:04:06.849 --> 00:04:09.650 things we need to do. First off, we need to seek 00:04:09.650 --> 00:04:12.789 God first before we make decisions. If we want 00:04:12.789 --> 00:04:14.930 to be led by the Spirit of God, we must go to 00:04:14.930 --> 00:04:17.370 God first and seek Him. Rather than just making 00:04:17.370 --> 00:04:19.029 decisions here and making decisions there and 00:04:19.029 --> 00:04:20.930 doing what we think is best, we need to stop 00:04:20.930 --> 00:04:22.769 doing that. We need to just simply say, Holy 00:04:22.769 --> 00:04:25.569 Spirit, guide me and direct me, lead me. And 00:04:25.569 --> 00:04:27.990 it's crucial that we do that, otherwise we cannot 00:04:27.990 --> 00:04:30.329 be led by the Spirit of God. The second step 00:04:30.329 --> 00:04:32.790 we need to take is to claim that the Word of 00:04:32.790 --> 00:04:35.889 God is there to cover our life, that we Believe 00:04:35.889 --> 00:04:38.329 the Word of God is our guide, is our direction, 00:04:38.490 --> 00:04:40.889 is our instruction manual, if you will, to tell 00:04:40.889 --> 00:04:42.810 us how to live this life. And the third thing 00:04:42.810 --> 00:04:45.069 we need to do is to pray about everything. I 00:04:45.069 --> 00:04:46.990 mean everything. You know, I've said many times 00:04:46.990 --> 00:04:48.810 before, I don't even want to drive out of my 00:04:48.810 --> 00:04:50.870 driveway unless I surrender to the Holy Spirit 00:04:50.870 --> 00:04:53.250 and just ask Him, guide me, direct me. I pray 00:04:53.250 --> 00:04:55.470 for your hand of protection. And you might think 00:04:55.470 --> 00:04:57.389 that that's a little heavy, but I don't believe 00:04:57.389 --> 00:04:59.449 it is at all because I believe that the Lord 00:04:59.449 --> 00:05:02.050 wants us in all our ways to acknowledge Him and 00:05:02.050 --> 00:05:04.509 plan our life around Him. So let me repeat very 00:05:04.509 --> 00:05:06.620 quickly. the three things I think are crucial 00:05:06.620 --> 00:05:09.319 to understanding how to be led by the Holy Spirit. 00:05:09.439 --> 00:05:12.800 We need to seek the Holy Spirit, we need to pray 00:05:12.800 --> 00:05:15.379 and ask for guidance and directions, and we must 00:05:15.379 --> 00:05:17.779 surrender our life to God's Word. The Word of 00:05:17.779 --> 00:05:20.459 God has instruction for every single thing that 00:05:20.459 --> 00:05:22.879 will ever take place in our life. There's nothing, 00:05:22.959 --> 00:05:24.879 whether it be finances, whether it be marriage, 00:05:24.980 --> 00:05:26.959 whether it be careers, whether it be the church 00:05:26.959 --> 00:05:30.220 that we should attend, all those things. We have 00:05:30.220 --> 00:05:32.899 instructions on how to deal with all those issues 00:05:32.899 --> 00:05:35.040 in our life found in the Word of God, so we've 00:05:35.040 --> 00:05:37.180 got to get into the Word of God and place at 00:05:37.180 --> 00:05:39.660 least some of the Word into our heart and mind 00:05:39.660 --> 00:05:41.699 each and every every day that we live. There's 00:05:41.699 --> 00:05:43.879 no other way to be led by the Spirit of God. 00:05:44.160 --> 00:05:47.379 These steps really apply to everything that we 00:05:47.379 --> 00:05:49.560 need from the Lord. Now, I'm going to kind of 00:05:49.560 --> 00:05:51.899 change the direction of the podcast, so let's 00:05:51.899 --> 00:05:55.319 look at the results now of seeking and praying 00:05:55.319 --> 00:05:58.019 and reading God's word for guidance and direction 00:05:58.019 --> 00:06:00.779 in our life. Being led by the Holy Spirit brings 00:06:00.779 --> 00:06:03.060 the gifts and the fruit of the Spirit in our 00:06:03.060 --> 00:06:05.360 life. It brings everything that's good that needs 00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:07.600 to take place in our life. It brings it all to 00:06:07.600 --> 00:06:11.040 us. We receive spiritual insight. We receive 00:06:11.040 --> 00:06:13.560 wisdom from the Holy Spirit. We receive knowledge 00:06:13.560 --> 00:06:16.000 from the Holy Spirit. You see, Jesus acknowledged 00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:18.439 that he needed the Holy Spirit. We read about 00:06:18.439 --> 00:06:21.209 it in a... amazing story in the book of Luke 00:06:21.209 --> 00:06:24.350 in chapter 4 verses 1 and 2. Let me read that 00:06:24.350 --> 00:06:26.529 to you right now. I believe this really shows 00:06:26.529 --> 00:06:29.930 us how even Jesus needed the guidance and direction 00:06:29.930 --> 00:06:32.920 of the Holy Spirit. found in Luke chapter 4, 00:06:32.959 --> 00:06:35.560 verses 1 -2. We may go a few more verses after 00:06:35.560 --> 00:06:37.579 that. Found in the New Living Translation. Let 00:06:37.579 --> 00:06:40.060 me read this to you. Then Jesus, full of the 00:06:40.060 --> 00:06:42.540 Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. 00:06:42.639 --> 00:06:45.600 He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness. Alright, 00:06:45.600 --> 00:06:47.959 right there. At the very beginning, Jesus has 00:06:47.959 --> 00:06:50.459 surrendered his will to God. Remember he did 00:06:50.459 --> 00:06:52.819 that in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before 00:06:52.819 --> 00:06:55.360 he was going to be crucified. And he was praying, 00:06:55.560 --> 00:06:57.560 take this from me, Lord. Oh, just take this cup 00:06:57.560 --> 00:06:59.800 from me. But then he quickly stopped because 00:06:59.800 --> 00:07:02.379 the Holy Spirit told him, him to surrender to 00:07:02.379 --> 00:07:05.240 God. He said, but no, not my will, but thy will 00:07:05.240 --> 00:07:07.980 be done. That was the Holy Spirit intervening 00:07:07.980 --> 00:07:10.579 in Jesus to give him direction. So let's look 00:07:10.579 --> 00:07:12.560 at what Jesus was facing here. It's called the 00:07:12.560 --> 00:07:15.399 temptation of Jesus. When we read verse one again, 00:07:15.480 --> 00:07:19.139 then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, okay, returned 00:07:19.139 --> 00:07:21.939 from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit 00:07:21.939 --> 00:07:25.139 in the wilderness where he was tempted by the 00:07:25.139 --> 00:07:28.300 devil for 40 days. Jesus ate nothing all that 00:07:28.300 --> 00:07:30.930 time and became very hungry. Obviously he did. 00:07:31.129 --> 00:07:33.050 So then he felt weak there, so then the devil 00:07:33.050 --> 00:07:34.889 wants to attack him just like the devil wants 00:07:34.889 --> 00:07:37.029 to attack us in our moment of weakness. Then 00:07:37.029 --> 00:07:39.250 the devil said to him, if you are the son of 00:07:39.250 --> 00:07:41.930 God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread. 00:07:42.009 --> 00:07:45.589 But Jesus told him, no, the scriptures say people 00:07:45.589 --> 00:07:48.449 do not live by bread alone. Verse five says, 00:07:48.470 --> 00:07:51.370 then the devil took him up and revealed to him 00:07:51.370 --> 00:07:54.089 all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of 00:07:54.089 --> 00:07:56.569 time. He said, I will give you the glory of these 00:07:56.569 --> 00:07:58.910 kingdoms and authority over them. The devil said, 00:07:59.310 --> 00:08:02.209 they are mine to give to anyone I please. I will 00:08:02.209 --> 00:08:04.870 give it all to you if you will worship me." Jesus 00:08:04.870 --> 00:08:07.069 replied, the scriptures say, remember, look at 00:08:07.069 --> 00:08:09.730 this, Jesus filled the Holy Spirit, went and 00:08:09.730 --> 00:08:11.629 used the Word of God to fight his challenge. 00:08:11.709 --> 00:08:13.490 That's what we need to do. When the devil comes 00:08:13.490 --> 00:08:15.750 to us and tells us this and tells us that and 00:08:15.750 --> 00:08:18.089 tries to get us to change our thoughts on something 00:08:18.089 --> 00:08:21.430 or modify our life or compromise on certain things, 00:08:21.449 --> 00:08:23.269 we need to throw a scripture back at him. That's 00:08:23.269 --> 00:08:25.269 what Jesus did. He says, the scriptures say, 00:08:25.430 --> 00:08:27.490 you must worship the Lord your God and serve 00:08:27.490 --> 00:08:30.519 only him. It says, Jesus, basically, was following 00:08:30.519 --> 00:08:33.240 the three -step approach that I told you at the 00:08:33.240 --> 00:08:35.340 beginning of this podcast, was one, we need to 00:08:35.340 --> 00:08:37.820 seek God, we need to pray, and we need to use 00:08:37.820 --> 00:08:39.840 the scriptures to guide and direct our lives. 00:08:39.980 --> 00:08:42.700 So the Holy Spirit will help us and direct us 00:08:42.700 --> 00:08:45.340 if we do those things. So basically, as we continue 00:08:45.340 --> 00:08:47.419 to read the story, we find out that Jesus obviously 00:08:47.419 --> 00:08:50.240 won the battle with the devil, and the Holy Spirit 00:08:50.240 --> 00:08:52.799 was the one leading Jesus through this battle, 00:08:52.879 --> 00:08:55.220 and He wants to lead us through every single 00:08:55.220 --> 00:08:57.899 battle. The Holy Spirit was there for Jesus and 00:08:57.899 --> 00:09:00.399 he's there for us each and every day. So let 00:09:00.399 --> 00:09:02.759 me give you an example now of how the Holy Spirit 00:09:02.759 --> 00:09:05.740 speaks to us to give us direction, give us instructions, 00:09:05.759 --> 00:09:07.980 and to lead us. I have to refer to something 00:09:07.980 --> 00:09:11.100 that took place many years ago when I was pastoring 00:09:11.100 --> 00:09:13.159 our church. Let me make a statement here right 00:09:13.159 --> 00:09:15.200 now and kind of question you. Have you, think 00:09:15.200 --> 00:09:17.840 about this, have you ever thought that you needed 00:09:17.840 --> 00:09:21.460 to call someone and when you called they had 00:09:21.460 --> 00:09:23.750 a need? they needed prayer or something. Well 00:09:23.750 --> 00:09:26.549 that happened to me on many occasions and many 00:09:26.549 --> 00:09:28.230 Christians that I know it will have expressed 00:09:28.230 --> 00:09:30.049 to me that they've experienced the same type 00:09:30.049 --> 00:09:32.070 of leading of the Holy Spirit. You see one day 00:09:32.070 --> 00:09:34.370 I was at church and I was just sitting there 00:09:34.370 --> 00:09:36.809 making a few phone calls to people just to see 00:09:36.809 --> 00:09:38.850 how people are doing. I like to check with them 00:09:38.850 --> 00:09:41.409 on Saturday sometimes just to call them and visit 00:09:41.409 --> 00:09:42.929 with them for a little bit just be sure they're 00:09:42.929 --> 00:09:44.830 doing okay and is there anything I can pray with 00:09:44.830 --> 00:09:46.450 them about. It was just something the Lord put 00:09:46.450 --> 00:09:49.210 up on my heart as I pastored the church to Saturday 00:09:49.210 --> 00:09:51.889 make contact with the people. Well on one particular 00:09:51.889 --> 00:09:54.789 Saturday when I called this one couple I called 00:09:54.789 --> 00:09:56.409 him and when the man answered the phone he said 00:09:56.409 --> 00:09:58.990 yeah what do you need and I thought oh this isn't 00:09:58.990 --> 00:10:01.190 starting off very well and I said well this is 00:10:01.190 --> 00:10:03.629 Pastor David at the church and I just want to 00:10:03.629 --> 00:10:05.230 just want to know is there anything I can pray 00:10:05.230 --> 00:10:07.070 with you about and he said yeah I guess you could 00:10:07.070 --> 00:10:08.970 he says our marriage is over we're splitting 00:10:08.970 --> 00:10:10.830 up matter of fact we were just leaving the house 00:10:10.830 --> 00:10:14.889 to go to the attorney's office and to start drawing 00:10:14.889 --> 00:10:17.950 up the papers for a divorce and I said well I 00:10:17.950 --> 00:10:20.049 believe that maybe it would be good idea if we 00:10:20.049 --> 00:10:21.980 talked a little bit before you did that so would 00:10:21.980 --> 00:10:24.360 you mind swinging by the church on your way to 00:10:24.360 --> 00:10:26.960 the attorney and maybe we can talk you see what 00:10:26.960 --> 00:10:29.500 had happened here was the Holy Spirit knew that 00:10:29.500 --> 00:10:31.620 I was trying to contact the people but he knew 00:10:31.620 --> 00:10:33.980 what people needed to contact more than others 00:10:33.980 --> 00:10:37.320 so he placed this person's this couples names 00:10:37.320 --> 00:10:40.340 in my mind, in my heart, and encouraged me to 00:10:40.340 --> 00:10:42.340 pick up the phone right then. Now had I waited 00:10:42.340 --> 00:10:44.440 and delayed and not done what the Holy Spirit 00:10:44.440 --> 00:10:46.440 wanted me to do, I could have missed the opportunity 00:10:46.440 --> 00:10:49.600 to help these people. So when I called, they 00:10:49.600 --> 00:10:52.159 were already heading out the door, planning on 00:10:52.159 --> 00:10:54.820 going, setting up all the paperwork for a divorce. 00:10:54.960 --> 00:10:57.019 But I asked them, would you please stop by the 00:10:57.019 --> 00:10:58.639 church so we could just pray a little bit and 00:10:58.639 --> 00:11:00.899 talk before you move on your way. And he said, 00:11:00.899 --> 00:11:02.899 yeah, I guess so. I won't do any good, but yeah, 00:11:02.899 --> 00:11:05.299 we'll do that. So they drove by the church and 00:11:05.299 --> 00:11:07.620 that was just me. by myself in their church on 00:11:07.620 --> 00:11:09.620 a Saturday and they came over and we sit and 00:11:09.620 --> 00:11:11.519 talk and we prayed and we talked and we prayed 00:11:11.519 --> 00:11:13.960 and we talked and we prayed and within about 00:11:13.960 --> 00:11:16.480 an hour or so you could tell that the Holy Spirit 00:11:16.480 --> 00:11:18.639 was moving in a very special way and they said 00:11:18.639 --> 00:11:21.200 they had thanked me for calling them because 00:11:21.200 --> 00:11:23.220 they didn't think that God really cared it really 00:11:23.220 --> 00:11:24.659 didn't matter if they kept their marriage together 00:11:24.659 --> 00:11:26.720 or not and they were just telling me all of their 00:11:26.720 --> 00:11:28.899 sadness and grief and everything but see the 00:11:28.899 --> 00:11:32.159 Holy Spirit intervened and and used me gave me 00:11:32.159 --> 00:11:34.440 the opportunity to be able to speak by the way 00:11:34.440 --> 00:11:37.649 they they didn't divorce. They never did. They 00:11:37.649 --> 00:11:40.029 basically realized that they just needed both 00:11:40.029 --> 00:11:42.230 of them to get their eyes on Jesus and off of 00:11:42.230 --> 00:11:44.669 the problems that they were facing. So they were 00:11:44.669 --> 00:11:46.990 struggling with issues just like you and I struggle 00:11:46.990 --> 00:11:49.590 with issues. But when the Holy Spirit is there 00:11:49.590 --> 00:11:52.210 and talking to us and pleading with us and trying 00:11:52.210 --> 00:11:54.330 to get our attention through something we read 00:11:54.330 --> 00:11:56.190 in the Word of God or a song that we're singing 00:11:56.190 --> 00:11:59.149 in church, then let's be sure and submit to Him 00:11:59.149 --> 00:12:01.429 and yield to Him because He wants to lead us 00:12:01.429 --> 00:12:03.490 and help us to go in the direction that we should 00:12:03.490 --> 00:12:05.769 go so we can solve a lot of the problems were 00:12:05.769 --> 00:12:08.309 faced, you know, in our life. And so I start out every 00:15:42.799 --> 00:15:45.679 day thanking God for scriptures, like Luke 17, 00:15:45.740 --> 00:15:48.039 19, where Jesus looked at a man and said, your 00:15:48.039 --> 00:15:50.450 faith has healed you. and scriptures that tell 00:15:50.450 --> 00:15:52.690 us that he prayed for the masses and they were 00:15:52.690 --> 00:15:54.289 healed, and scriptures that tell us they healed 00:15:54.289 --> 00:15:56.490 every kind of disease and illness. Now when I read 00:16:29.429 --> 00:16:33.190 that scripture it reminds me of so much the help 00:16:33.190 --> 00:16:35.090 that I received I should say so much from the 00:16:35.090 --> 00:16:37.230 Holy Spirit because the biggest challenge that 00:16:37.230 --> 00:16:39.649 I've had in my life is that my understanding 00:16:39.649 --> 00:16:42.610 gets in the way of God's will or my understanding 00:16:42.610 --> 00:16:44.370 gets in the way of what the Holy Spirit wants 00:16:44.370 --> 00:16:47.429 me to do and so that scripture really helps me 00:16:47.429 --> 00:16:49.360 when I'm in the midst of trying to make a decision 00:16:49.360 --> 00:16:52.639 on something.
