And they stripped him and put a scarlet 00:03:38.030 --> 00:03:41.210 robe on him. And twisting together a crown of 00:03:41.210 --> 00:03:44.650 thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed 00:03:44.650 --> 00:03:47.610 in his right hand. It was more like a 00:04:24.310 --> 00:04:28.310 helmet that was made of thorns. So it wasn't 00:04:28.310 --> 00:04:32.730 just, I mean, as horrible as a circle of. thorns 00:04:32.730 --> 00:04:37.730 would be it was all over his head and they crammed 00:04:37.730 --> 00:04:40.290 it down on his head so his head began to bleed 00:04:40.290 --> 00:04:43.149 already and then they took this reed and started 00:04:43.149 --> 00:04:46.170 smacking him on the head with it so it's like 00:04:46.170 --> 00:04:50.769 oh the suffering that he went through but as 00:04:50.769 --> 00:04:54.389 i was meditating on this i was reminded that 00:04:54.389 --> 00:04:59.420 this whole idea of thorns, goes back to the Garden 00:04:59.420 --> 00:05:03.220 of Eden. You want to read Genesis 3, 17 and 18, 00:05:03.439 --> 00:05:06.519 where God is speaking to Adam. And unto Adam 00:05:06.519 --> 00:05:09.000 he said, Because you have hearkened unto the 00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:11.699 voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree 00:05:11.699 --> 00:05:14.660 of which I commanded you, saying, You shall not 00:05:14.660 --> 00:05:17.610 eat of it. Curse is the ground for your sake, 00:05:17.769 --> 00:05:20.589 and sorrow shall you eat of it all the days of 00:05:20.589 --> 00:05:23.689 your life. Thorns also and thistles shall bring 00:05:23.689 --> 00:05:27.050 forth to you, and you shall eat the herb of the 00:05:27.050 --> 00:05:29.990 field. Part 00:05:43.120 --> 00:05:46.540 of what happened as a result of the earth being 00:05:46.540 --> 00:05:49.160 cursed, all of a sudden, for the first time, 00:05:49.180 --> 00:05:53.279 you have thorns and thistles. And I guess you 00:05:53.279 --> 00:05:55.439 could add briars and anything that's prickly 00:05:55.439 --> 00:05:59.040 like that. Like a cactus, too, probably. Oh, 00:05:59.040 --> 00:06:02.920 yeah, could be. And probably even things like 00:06:02.920 --> 00:06:07.060 poison ivy and poisonous plants probably came 00:06:07.060 --> 00:06:11.000 as a result of the curse. Because when God created 00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:14.480 the earth and he planted the garden, everything 00:06:14.480 --> 00:06:17.879 was perfect. Everything was good. You could eat 00:06:17.879 --> 00:06:19.970 everything. kind of plant. It wasn't going to 00:06:19.970 --> 00:06:22.589 hurt you. But there are now poisonous plants 00:06:22.589 --> 00:06:28.550 and these thorns. So I see this connection between 00:06:28.550 --> 00:06:32.550 the Garden of Eden and the curse that came because 00:06:32.550 --> 00:06:36.870 of disobedience. causing thorns to come up from 00:06:36.870 --> 00:06:42.009 the ground. And I feel like the suffering that 00:06:42.009 --> 00:06:46.170 was brought on Jesus as a result of these thorns 00:06:46.170 --> 00:06:50.990 is directly connected to the curse. Some years 00:06:50.990 --> 00:06:53.970 back when we were in Israel, we brought back, 00:06:54.029 --> 00:06:57.250 it was like a crown of thorns. Oh, yeah. Remember 00:06:57.250 --> 00:07:00.750 that? And the thorns were about... three inches 00:07:00.750 --> 00:07:04.610 long yeah yeah and they were sharp yeah and it 00:07:04.610 --> 00:07:07.009 was just and that was nothing like the one he 00:07:07.009 --> 00:07:09.569 was wearing yeah you know because this was just 00:07:09.569 --> 00:07:12.350 a more simplified thing but that was more an 00:07:12.350 --> 00:07:15.329 elaborate one What he was wearing. Yeah, yeah. 00:07:15.370 --> 00:07:19.029 He would have worn that helmet of thorns. But, 00:07:19.069 --> 00:07:22.709 you know, the point is that he was wounded for 00:07:22.709 --> 00:07:26.529 our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities. 00:07:26.529 --> 00:07:29.029 The chastisement of our peace was upon him, and 00:07:29.029 --> 00:07:32.910 by his stripes we are healed. So he took those 00:07:32.910 --> 00:07:36.490 thorns on his head and suffered on his head. 00:07:36.589 --> 00:07:39.350 And I'm telling you, if you are having issues 00:07:39.350 --> 00:07:43.600 with... thoughts that don't belong in your head, 00:07:43.699 --> 00:07:45.939 if you're having any kind of issues with mental 00:07:45.939 --> 00:07:50.600 torment. But I remember being tormented, 00:07:58.660 --> 00:08:01.160 that these thoughts were coming into my head 00:08:01.160 --> 00:08:04.980 that did not belong there. And all I could do 00:08:04.980 --> 00:08:09.319 in that time was say, Lord, I love you and I 00:08:09.319 --> 00:08:13.100 trust you. Lord, I love you and I trust you. 00:08:13.220 --> 00:08:16.959 Jesus, Jesus, I love you and I trust you. And 00:08:16.959 --> 00:08:20.139 I went through this little season of of this 00:08:20.139 --> 00:08:25.060 mental torment. But because Jesus bore this crown 00:08:25.060 --> 00:08:28.220 of thorns on his head, he was there for me and 00:08:28.220 --> 00:08:31.220 he healed me of it. And like I said, he healed 00:08:31.220 --> 00:08:35.519 me so completely that. I didn't have any, I don't 00:08:35.519 --> 00:08:37.759 even have a recollection of what that torment 00:08:37.759 --> 00:08:41.600 was. He so healed me. And he can heal you, too, 00:08:41.759 --> 00:08:46.059 if you're being tormented by remembrance of things. 00:08:46.399 --> 00:08:50.639 Sometimes there's kind of like this replay of 00:08:50.639 --> 00:08:54.080 a recording that goes on in your head, something 00:08:54.080 --> 00:08:56.899 that happened to you, and it's just tormenting 00:08:56.899 --> 00:09:01.570 you. We bring the power of the thorns, the crown 00:09:01.570 --> 00:09:06.149 of thorns over your mind, over your will that 00:09:06.149 --> 00:09:10.409 you can say, no, that is not of me. Romans 7 00:09:10.409 --> 00:09:14.620 makes it very clear that the real you. is your 00:09:14.620 --> 00:09:18.440 spirit. And your spirit has become one with the 00:09:18.440 --> 00:09:22.820 Spirit of God. And when you need a healing or 00:09:22.820 --> 00:09:25.100 when there's something coming into your head 00:09:25.100 --> 00:09:28.960 that isn't according to the Word of God, your 00:09:28.960 --> 00:09:32.179 spirit has gotten into agreement with the Word 00:09:32.179 --> 00:09:34.399 of God. Your spirit has gotten into agreement 00:09:34.399 --> 00:09:39.580 with God's ways. So anything that's coming in 00:09:39.580 --> 00:09:44.379 that doesn't agree with God's ways, you can just 00:09:44.379 --> 00:09:47.559 tell it to leave. You can tell it to leave because 00:09:47.559 --> 00:09:51.179 of the power of the thorns that Jesus bore on 00:09:51.179 --> 00:09:54.100 his head. You're going to reject those thoughts, 00:09:54.299 --> 00:09:57.539 especially the ones that are coming as suggestions 00:09:57.539 --> 00:10:01.820 from the outside. But even our fleshly nature, 00:10:01.960 --> 00:10:04.440 we can't blame the devil for everything. Our 00:10:04.440 --> 00:10:07.919 fleshly nature is inclined to do the wrong thing. 00:10:08.399 --> 00:10:13.940 That brokenness that is coming from Well, it's 00:10:13.940 --> 00:10:16.679 coming from the curse, really. Deuteronomy chapter 27 and 28, it spells 00:10:30.549 --> 00:10:34.649 out the blessings and the curses. When the children 00:10:34.649 --> 00:10:37.690 of Israel were to come into the promised land, 00:10:37.830 --> 00:10:39.629 one of the first things that they were to do 00:10:39.629 --> 00:10:42.470 after they won the battle at Jericho, I think 00:10:42.470 --> 00:10:44.850 it was, and I think probably the first two battles, 00:10:44.990 --> 00:10:50.029 they went back to Shechem, which was where Abraham 00:10:50.029 --> 00:10:54.929 first met up with God in the land that was promised. 00:10:55.519 --> 00:11:00.169 And it was also the land where Jacob had... bought 00:11:00.169 --> 00:11:03.509 a piece of ground, and he dug the well there 00:11:03.509 --> 00:11:05.830 that's called Jacob's Well. And we've been there. 00:11:05.990 --> 00:11:08.429 And we've been there. And it's the place where 00:11:08.429 --> 00:11:11.549 Joseph's body was laid. Well, when the children 00:11:11.549 --> 00:11:13.309 of Israel came, they brought the body with them. 00:11:13.450 --> 00:11:16.070 So anyway, Shechem was a really important place, 00:11:16.190 --> 00:11:18.389 and they had the Mount of Blessing and the Mount 00:11:18.389 --> 00:11:22.289 of Cursing. Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim. Exactly. 00:11:22.769 --> 00:11:26.389 So Mount Ebal was the place where Deuteronomy 00:11:26.389 --> 00:11:29.590 27, they're pronouncing the curses, right? And 00:11:29.590 --> 00:11:32.950 then Mount Gerizim was the Mount of Blessings. 00:11:33.049 --> 00:11:36.409 But it also goes on beyond all of the blessings, 00:11:36.509 --> 00:11:38.730 you know, blessed will you be in the city, blessed 00:11:38.730 --> 00:11:43.330 will your store, all these good things. But then 00:11:43.330 --> 00:11:46.210 it goes on and say, but if you don't, and here's 00:11:46.210 --> 00:11:47.269 another whole list of curses. If you don't obey, 00:11:47.549 --> 00:11:51.309 then all these curses will come. Yeah, so it's 00:11:51.309 --> 00:11:56.759 really important that we understand that curses 00:11:56.759 --> 00:12:00.720 come from disobedience. And God wants to deliver 00:12:00.720 --> 00:12:05.279 us from all of that as we get a hold of the fact 00:12:05.279 --> 00:12:09.320 that Jesus did it for us. He did the suffering 00:12:09.320 --> 00:12:12.139 for us, and we can enter into his suffering. 00:12:12.240 --> 00:12:16.779 There's another word for curse that is used in 00:12:16.779 --> 00:12:20.850 Numbers 23, verse 8. where it's talking about 00:12:20.850 --> 00:12:24.210 Balaam, where Balak tried to get Balaam to curse 00:12:24.210 --> 00:12:28.730 Israel, and he took him three different places. 00:12:28.789 --> 00:12:31.210 We've talked about that recently. But this word 00:12:31.210 --> 00:12:34.789 curse, Balaam says, how can I curse whom God 00:12:34.789 --> 00:12:40.090 has not cursed? So that word curse is the Hebrew 00:12:40.090 --> 00:12:45.539 word nakav. it not only means to curse, it also 00:12:45.539 --> 00:12:49.340 means to pierce. Gesenius says it means to bore 00:12:49.340 --> 00:12:52.340 or to perforate. Well, isn't that what happened 00:12:52.340 --> 00:12:56.539 to Jesus with that crown of thorns? His head 00:12:56.539 --> 00:13:01.019 was perforated. It was absolutely bored through. 00:13:01.299 --> 00:13:07.440 And you've got so many nerves in your head. Even 00:13:07.440 --> 00:13:10.259 from our accident that we had. Oh, yeah. Because 00:13:10.259 --> 00:13:12.940 I had blacked out and my head went every which 00:13:12.940 --> 00:13:16.700 way but loose. But all these little spots on 00:13:16.700 --> 00:13:19.500 the left side of my head, I can just rub them. 00:13:20.059 --> 00:13:23.840 And the pain, it's like a nauseating pain almost 00:13:23.840 --> 00:13:29.299 just to rub them. We had a wonderful 00:14:03.909 --> 00:14:07.730 40th anniversary. Yes. That's when it was, wasn't 00:14:07.730 --> 00:14:10.549 it? That's when it was, yeah. Yeah, I was suffering, 00:14:10.690 --> 00:14:12.470 but I was determined we're going to have a good 00:14:12.470 --> 00:14:16.629 time. Wow. So we did the best we could. But, 00:14:16.629 --> 00:14:21.590 you know, this idea of a curse will... perforate. 00:14:21.590 --> 00:14:25.529 It will cause a piercing. It'll cause a perforation. 00:14:25.629 --> 00:14:29.470 So talking about thorns, there are lots of scriptures 00:14:29.470 --> 00:14:31.730 where it mentions thorns. I was surprised at 00:14:31.730 --> 00:14:33.509 how many different places it was. And we'll just 00:14:33.509 --> 00:14:37.929 mention a few of them. Proverbs 22, 5 says thorns 00:14:37.929 --> 00:14:41.870 and snares are in the way of the froward. And 00:14:41.870 --> 00:14:45.070 he that keeps his soul shall be far from them. 00:14:45.190 --> 00:14:47.750 So, you know, if you're not doing what you're 00:14:47.750 --> 00:14:51.789 supposed to be doing, if you're behaving foolishly, 00:14:51.789 --> 00:14:54.750 if you're headstrong and going away from the 00:14:54.750 --> 00:14:58.389 things of God, it's going to put thorns and snares 00:14:58.389 --> 00:15:01.309 in your way. And so she was enjoying the 00:15:28.029 --> 00:15:30.610 war was over. You know, she's enjoying her time 00:15:30.610 --> 00:15:33.610 working in an apartment store. And then one day 00:15:33.610 --> 00:15:37.399 she found a lump, you know, on her breast. And 00:15:37.399 --> 00:15:40.059 she just inquired of the Lord and she just heard 00:15:40.059 --> 00:15:42.960 him speak to her. If you're not going to do what 00:15:42.960 --> 00:15:45.320 I told you to do, there's no purpose in you being 00:15:45.320 --> 00:15:49.299 here. Yep. Yeah. So she went to Taiwan and the 00:15:49.299 --> 00:15:52.820 lump disappeared. Yeah. And Mariah Woodworth 00:15:52.820 --> 00:15:56.039 hit her. She lost four children, one right after 00:15:56.039 --> 00:15:58.559 the other. The Lord was speaking to her to go 00:15:58.559 --> 00:16:00.980 into ministry. That was very difficult. Late 00:16:00.980 --> 00:16:04.179 1800s, a woman in ministry. Very true. But she 00:16:04.179 --> 00:16:08.200 had the power of God, healings, miracles. But 00:16:08.200 --> 00:16:11.039 it took till the fourth child where she obeyed 00:16:11.039 --> 00:16:14.000 God. Yeah. That's wild. She was left with one. 00:16:14.240 --> 00:16:18.500 She was left with one. Yeah. Disobedience creates 00:16:18.500 --> 00:16:20.120 thorns in your life. And she 00:37:22.940 --> 00:37:26.780 ministered there and the Chinese people loved 00:37:26.780 --> 00:37:29.980 her. And then 1 Peter 4 .13 says, but 00:40:14.900 --> 00:40:18.000 rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, 00:40:18.019 --> 00:40:21.079 that you may also rejoice and be glad when his 00:40:21.079 --> 00:40:23.519 glory is revealed. And you put that in today's 00:40:23.519 --> 00:40:27.059 terms. If you're in China or somewhere and you 00:40:27.059 --> 00:40:29.690 get pulled in, you're interrogated. You know, 00:40:29.690 --> 00:40:32.409 and you're threatening all this and that. Your 00:40:32.409 --> 00:40:34.210 first thought getting out of, oh, thank you, 00:40:34.210 --> 00:40:36.809 Jesus. Thank you, Lord, that I'm not thrown in 00:40:36.809 --> 00:40:40.769 jail. You know, be rejoicing. But what happens 00:40:40.769 --> 00:40:43.130 if you got beat? Right. And all that, and they're 00:40:43.130 --> 00:40:45.429 rejoicing because they laid stripes on them, 00:40:45.449 --> 00:40:49.230 and they were rejoicing. Yes. And I've heard 00:40:49.230 --> 00:40:52.670 stories like that coming out of China, that the 00:40:52.670 --> 00:40:55.869 pastors that were arrested and beaten, that they 00:40:55.869 --> 00:40:58.860 were— joyful about it. In fact, Peter Snyder 00:40:58.860 --> 00:41:03.619 tells the story of a man that was in jail and 00:41:03.619 --> 00:41:07.179 he was being beaten every day. And one day, one 00:41:07.179 --> 00:41:09.420 day they're beating on him and he starts to laugh. 00:41:10.119 --> 00:41:13.179 And they said, what's the matter with you? Why 00:41:13.179 --> 00:41:16.280 are you laughing? And he said, I don't know. 00:41:16.420 --> 00:41:21.110 I'm just so happy. So he's really rejoicing in 00:41:21.110 --> 00:41:23.289 his suffering. That was a God thing. It was a 00:41:23.289 --> 00:41:25.710 God thing. And that is the work of the grace 00:41:25.710 --> 00:41:29.210 of God in our lives. And that is the point of 00:41:29.210 --> 00:41:33.610 us going through adversity so that we learn to 00:41:33.610 --> 00:41:36.710 rejoice in our sufferings. I remember that Chinese 00:41:36.710 --> 00:41:40.880 pastor that... They wanted to humiliate him so 00:41:40.880 --> 00:41:43.679 bad because he was a pastor. They had him clean 00:41:43.679 --> 00:41:47.219 out the toilets. The whole cesspool, I think 00:41:47.219 --> 00:41:49.480 it was. The cesspool. So he's standing in it, 00:41:49.519 --> 00:41:51.920 and they would tell him, don't you sing and all 00:41:51.920 --> 00:41:56.380 that. His favorite song was, I Come to the Garden 00:41:56.380 --> 00:41:59.619 Alone. And he stank so badly, and the job was 00:41:59.619 --> 00:42:02.300 so stinky, that they would leave him alone. They 00:42:02.300 --> 00:42:04.539 wouldn't come near him. There wasn't anybody 00:42:04.539 --> 00:42:07.420 there to tell him not to sing. They wouldn't 00:42:07.420 --> 00:42:09.679 let him sing in his cell. And they call him his 00:42:09.679 --> 00:42:13.119 garden. And the last time we were in China was 00:42:13.119 --> 00:42:16.900 in 2012. We were with the underground church, 00:42:16.980 --> 00:42:22.219 and we sat next to this man. He was in jail at 00:42:22.219 --> 00:42:24.219 the same time the heavenly man. I mean, everybody 00:42:24.219 --> 00:42:26.820 hears about the heavenly man. And how he escaped. 00:42:27.019 --> 00:42:30.099 He escaped. But this man, he served his full 00:42:30.099 --> 00:42:34.530 16 years. He did not escape. Who's more heavenly? 00:42:34.670 --> 00:42:37.670 I thought this man. And it's just like, you don't 00:42:37.670 --> 00:42:40.829 even feel worthy to sit next to somebody like 00:42:40.829 --> 00:42:44.030 this. Terrible. Many, many places where there's 00:43:30.199 --> 00:43:34.980 a strong Islam. Think of Iran. Iran is just awful 00:43:34.980 --> 00:43:37.699 right now. Yeah, because you think Iran, they're 00:43:37.699 --> 00:43:41.320 not Arabs, they're Persians. Right. And Islam 00:43:41.320 --> 00:43:44.340 was not their religion. Not originally. It didn't work. 00:44:09.360 --> 00:44:12.340 But as soon as Ronald Reagan came into office, 00:44:13.019 --> 00:44:15.920 Guess what? They freed him. It's true. Because 00:44:15.920 --> 00:44:20.119 he had some clout. Yeah, God used him. Yeah, 00:44:20.639 --> 00:44:24.539 God used him, and that's a persecution. You imagine 00:44:24.539 --> 00:44:27.460 you're working in an embassy, U .S. embassy somewhere, 00:44:27.739 --> 00:44:30.300 and all of a sudden you're taken prisoner. That's true. That's the 00:45:01.119 --> 00:45:04.619 only thing that will turn righteousness in any 00:45:04.619 --> 00:45:09.380 nation. It's true. Wow. So to boil this down. 00:45:10.280 --> 00:45:14.079 I think it would be good for us to understand 00:45:14.079 --> 00:45:18.519 that every kind of adversity that we go through 00:45:18.519 --> 00:45:24.619 is meant to help us to practice rejoicing in 00:45:24.619 --> 00:45:29.380 suffering. And the longer we spend in grumbling 00:45:29.380 --> 00:45:32.719 and complaining about it and murmuring. the longer 00:45:32.719 --> 00:45:35.360 it will be before we get delivered from that 00:45:35.360 --> 00:45:37.440 trouble. We'll have to try that the next time 00:45:37.440 --> 00:45:40.539 we're on a real turbulent airline. We call that 00:45:40.539 --> 00:45:46.480 tribulation. You do. I just go to sleep. So let's 00:45:46.480 --> 00:45:50.340 make that our practice. Let the Holy Spirit remind 00:45:50.340 --> 00:45:53.019 us. Remember, that's one of the jobs of the Holy 00:45:53.019 --> 00:45:56.860 Spirit, is to bring to our remembrance. So whenever 00:45:56.860 --> 00:46:00.239 we come into some kind of adversity, it could 00:46:00.239 --> 00:46:03.599 be small, it could be great, begin to practice 00:46:03.599 --> 00:46:07.400 rejoicing. The ability to walk in his presence, 00:46:35.760 --> 00:46:40.659 knowing him and rejoicing in him brings his presence 00:46:40.659 --> 00:46:46.619 into your life and gives you that grace. And 00:46:46.619 --> 00:46:50.199 it gives you that shalom, that peace that passes 00:46:50.199 --> 00:46:55.219 understanding that comes from his presence. So 00:46:55.219 --> 00:46:58.480 to close, I was reminded of this little song 00:46:58.480 --> 00:47:03.280 that we used to sing. A long time ago. A long 00:47:03.280 --> 00:47:06.800 time ago. And I understand that there's more 00:47:06.800 --> 00:47:09.699 than one tune to it, so I'll just bring that 00:47:09.699 --> 00:47:12.940 tune that I remember, and hopefully I'll get 00:47:12.940 --> 00:47:16.010 it pretty close to right. But it's to remind 00:47:16.010 --> 00:47:20.369 us that we can enter into his sufferings, into 00:47:20.369 --> 00:47:23.489 the sufferings of Jesus. Even when we're being 00:47:23.489 --> 00:47:27.070 pierced through by something, we have the joy 00:47:27.070 --> 00:47:30.170 of knowing that as we enter into his sufferings, 00:47:30.190 --> 00:47:34.630 there's a glory that comes with it.
