Did you both grow up in New Zealand? Yes. 00:02:42.150 --> 00:02:45.430 I'll start with my wife. Come on, Sarah, tell 00:02:45.430 --> 00:02:48.650 us. Okay. Well, my parents are from the Pacific 00:02:48.650 --> 00:02:51.250 Islands. They came to New Zealand from the island 00:02:51.250 --> 00:02:54.689 of Samoa. Pacific Island of Samoa. They came 00:02:54.689 --> 00:02:58.530 as youth in those days, in the 60s, 70s, maybe 00:02:58.530 --> 00:03:01.750 in the 50s, early 50s. They had Pacific Islanders 00:03:01.750 --> 00:03:04.250 come into New Zealand to help with the agriculture, 00:03:04.550 --> 00:03:07.150 with picking fruit and stuff. And my parents, 00:03:07.250 --> 00:03:09.069 because in the islands, they send their children 00:03:09.069 --> 00:03:12.629 back to other countries to help send money back 00:03:12.629 --> 00:03:15.550 to support the family. And that's what my parents 00:03:15.550 --> 00:03:20.389 were part of. And they came as youth. They met 00:03:20.389 --> 00:03:25.969 and married in New Zealand and in Samoa, in the 00:03:25.969 --> 00:03:28.789 Pacific Islands, every day at six o 'clock in 00:03:28.789 --> 00:03:31.650 the evening, everything in the island stops and 00:03:31.650 --> 00:03:34.669 everything, all the roads are shut down, all 00:03:34.669 --> 00:03:36.530 these gates and stuff that come down. And what 00:03:36.530 --> 00:03:38.969 happens is everyone goes into their houses and 00:03:38.969 --> 00:03:43.219 they pray. They pray for about an hour. Everything 00:03:43.219 --> 00:03:46.000 comes back to life once that time is over. And 00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:48.199 the gates go back up. Everyone goes back into 00:03:48.199 --> 00:03:50.219 their home. And this is what my parents brought 00:03:50.219 --> 00:03:53.780 back into New Zealand for us as kids. And this 00:03:53.780 --> 00:03:56.900 is what I was brought up in. And so I knew of 00:03:56.900 --> 00:03:59.680 the Lord because my parents were walking as... 00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:03.219 believers, but not as born again believers who 00:04:03.219 --> 00:04:06.659 knew Jesus personally, intimately. And so they 00:04:06.659 --> 00:04:09.979 came as, they went to a church called the Pacific 00:04:09.979 --> 00:04:15.080 Island PIPC. And it was a group of Pacific Islanders 00:04:15.080 --> 00:04:17.740 that came together to worship. And my parents 00:04:17.740 --> 00:04:21.300 were brought up there and they grew up in the 00:04:21.300 --> 00:04:24.800 community. And then what happened was they had 00:04:25.459 --> 00:04:28.680 missionaries that came around and they evangelized 00:04:28.680 --> 00:04:31.740 to my parents and my parents received Jesus as 00:04:31.740 --> 00:04:34.240 their Lord and Savior and then we went from a 00:04:34.240 --> 00:04:38.019 Pacific Island Presbyterian church into a Samoan 00:04:38.019 --> 00:04:42.040 Assembly of God church. That was a major shift 00:04:42.040 --> 00:04:45.959 for us. I'm sure that was a big shift. In those 00:04:45.959 --> 00:04:48.680 days the Assembly of God church was from what 00:04:48.680 --> 00:04:51.879 I can remember was just starting up and so in 00:04:51.879 --> 00:04:55.180 the Pacific Island community the pastor that 00:04:55.180 --> 00:04:57.920 was leading us was one of the founders of the 00:04:57.920 --> 00:05:00.879 Pacific Island Samoan churches in Wellington. 00:05:01.300 --> 00:05:03.600 And so there was a group of them for different 00:05:03.600 --> 00:05:05.920 suburbs. So we were in the Wellington when there 00:05:05.920 --> 00:05:08.139 was a Porirua, you know, upper heart and stuff 00:05:08.139 --> 00:05:11.819 like that. And that's where I grew up and under 00:05:11.819 --> 00:05:15.139 the Samoan Assembly of God church. And that's 00:05:15.139 --> 00:05:18.000 where I came to know Jesus. And we had a lot 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:20.899 of American influence. They put up screens at 00:05:20.899 --> 00:05:23.339 some of our revival, we called them the revival 00:05:23.339 --> 00:05:25.579 session. I remember that even as a young kid. 00:05:25.660 --> 00:05:29.319 And they had Billy Graham sessions and had Billy 00:05:29.319 --> 00:05:31.519 Graham preaching to the crowds and stuff. And 00:05:31.519 --> 00:05:34.779 it was amazing. And I remember the Holy Spirit 00:05:34.779 --> 00:05:37.060 falling on us as youth because we were growing 00:05:37.060 --> 00:05:40.699 up and we have youth sessions and they were major 00:05:40.699 --> 00:05:44.199 influences. And so was Oral Roberts. We had books 00:05:44.199 --> 00:05:46.899 on Oral Roberts growing up as well. Catherine 00:05:46.899 --> 00:05:49.220 Coleman, you know, a lot of American influence 00:05:49.220 --> 00:05:52.459 in those days. And so I was blessed to be able 00:05:52.459 --> 00:05:55.689 to be born. up in that but you know as as youth 00:05:55.689 --> 00:05:57.730 and as young people get curious about the world 00:05:57.730 --> 00:05:59.930 we go to school and it's a different world out 00:05:59.930 --> 00:06:03.970 there and um yeah and so I kind of fell back 00:06:03.970 --> 00:06:07.189 a bit but I didn't go into the full -on like 00:06:07.189 --> 00:06:10.709 um leaving home and falling back into adultery 00:06:10.709 --> 00:06:13.110 and all this sort of stuff. But I do remember 00:06:13.110 --> 00:06:16.050 that in my culture, in Samoan culture, even in 00:06:16.050 --> 00:06:19.050 New Zealand, you don't tend to leave home until 00:06:19.050 --> 00:06:23.509 you're married. So I stayed at home even as a 00:06:23.509 --> 00:06:26.250 teenager, even when I was 21, until I got married 00:06:26.250 --> 00:06:29.689 and left home. And so I feel I was blessed because 00:06:29.689 --> 00:06:32.209 I had parents who had a covering over me. And 00:06:32.209 --> 00:06:34.610 even when I went through my ups and downs, they 00:06:34.610 --> 00:06:37.089 still had a covering. And even when I met my 00:06:37.089 --> 00:06:40.240 husband. It was a real blessing because we had 00:06:40.240 --> 00:06:43.300 a part of one of our pastors came and he set 00:06:43.300 --> 00:06:46.360 up a prison ministry outreach. And there was 00:06:46.360 --> 00:06:49.019 a whole story behind that. But what happened 00:06:49.019 --> 00:06:52.279 was as a youth, I think I was about 21, I think, 00:06:52.319 --> 00:06:55.339 I actually got really bored with church. I had 00:06:55.339 --> 00:06:58.540 done the youth. I've done the children's ministry. 00:06:58.600 --> 00:07:00.139 I've done the kitchen ministry. I've done all 00:07:00.139 --> 00:07:02.519 the ministries. And it was getting boring. I 00:07:02.519 --> 00:07:05.019 found it quite boring. And I probably didn't 00:07:05.019 --> 00:07:08.040 have the Holy Spirit moving on me. as much as 00:07:08.040 --> 00:07:11.819 I wanted him to. But yeah, and I just, one day 00:07:11.819 --> 00:07:13.500 I just said to the Lord straight, Lord, I'm bored. 00:07:13.639 --> 00:07:15.720 There's got to be more to you than this. I want 00:07:15.720 --> 00:07:18.959 some excitement. I want to go travel. I want 00:07:18.959 --> 00:07:22.139 to go see the world. And I suppose I can say, 00:07:22.199 --> 00:07:25.259 you know, be careful what you pray for. Because 00:07:25.259 --> 00:07:28.519 actually if it's what you really truly believe 00:07:28.519 --> 00:07:31.279 in, then pray it and believe in it because that's 00:07:31.279 --> 00:07:34.459 exactly what I got. Wow. From the day I met my 00:07:34.459 --> 00:07:37.589 husband. It was in prison ministry. Richard was 00:07:37.589 --> 00:07:40.129 in prison, and we as a youth were going in to 00:07:40.129 --> 00:07:43.029 minister to them. And what happened was, yeah, 00:07:43.089 --> 00:07:45.689 I met Richard. He was the worship leader, and 00:07:45.689 --> 00:07:49.410 I couldn't believe that a prison inmate was actually 00:07:49.410 --> 00:07:53.129 worshiping God in prison. Because you have another 00:07:53.129 --> 00:07:56.110 view of what prisoners are like when you're not 00:07:56.110 --> 00:07:59.370 in prison. Right, sure. I thought they were. 00:07:59.740 --> 00:08:02.279 just waiting for us to go and evangelize them. 00:08:02.319 --> 00:08:05.240 But no, they were full on for the Lord in there. 00:08:05.259 --> 00:08:08.240 There were a lot more fire than we were going 00:08:08.240 --> 00:08:11.560 in. That's interesting. It's very interesting, 00:08:11.660 --> 00:08:15.699 I know. And I might hand it over to Roach, actually. 00:08:15.699 --> 00:08:18.120 So, Richard, there must be some background to 00:08:18.120 --> 00:08:20.879 this if you were in prison. What's the background? 00:08:21.879 --> 00:08:25.939 Well, I grew up in a small town called Featherston, 00:08:26.139 --> 00:08:28.860 which is about 30 miles away from Wellington. 00:08:29.639 --> 00:08:33.279 So I grew up on a farm. So there was eight siblings 00:08:33.279 --> 00:08:38.440 and we weren't a rich family and we weren't middle 00:08:38.440 --> 00:08:42.080 class either because we grew our own vegetables. 00:08:42.379 --> 00:08:45.039 It was like a Goshen land. You call it Goshen 00:08:45.039 --> 00:08:48.539 land today. We had our own sheep and grew all 00:08:48.539 --> 00:08:51.600 our veggies and we had enough leftover to feed 00:08:51.600 --> 00:08:54.399 everyone. Anyway, long story short, I had been 00:08:54.399 --> 00:08:57.860 molested more than one, two, three times. Oh 00:08:57.860 --> 00:09:02.299 no. Not by men, by women when I was young. Yeah. 00:09:03.120 --> 00:09:07.659 And that affected me. And what really took me 00:09:07.659 --> 00:09:10.840 off the rails, there's a saying called hurt people 00:09:10.840 --> 00:09:14.779 hurt people. Absolutely. And people who are hurt 00:09:14.779 --> 00:09:18.399 usually hurt others. And so I had been hurt so 00:09:18.399 --> 00:09:22.539 much. And then, yeah, my dad, he went out with 00:09:22.539 --> 00:09:24.860 my mom's best friend and I caught them and did. 00:09:25.059 --> 00:09:28.679 And that's when. My whole world crumbled. On 00:09:28.679 --> 00:09:30.639 top of the other things, you know, being molested. 00:09:30.779 --> 00:09:35.039 So I really had a hate in my heart for women. 00:09:35.720 --> 00:09:38.440 And I didn't become gay or anything like that, 00:09:38.460 --> 00:09:41.600 but it was hard for me to ever have a relationship. 00:09:42.179 --> 00:09:45.759 And so I was bitter and angry. And that's what 00:09:45.759 --> 00:09:50.679 led me into drugs. And I was always into my music. 00:09:50.820 --> 00:09:54.379 And I loved music. It was like a... a way out, 00:09:54.399 --> 00:09:58.759 you know, an escape. And so I would play music 00:09:58.759 --> 00:10:03.679 and then got into bands and we would play and, 00:10:03.779 --> 00:10:06.419 you know, I really enjoyed that. But I had an 00:10:06.419 --> 00:10:10.440 alcohol problem. I had a drug problem. I had 00:10:10.440 --> 00:10:14.379 a violent problem because I was angry. And so 00:10:14.379 --> 00:10:17.940 no excuses, though, you know. I don't have any 00:10:17.940 --> 00:10:22.639 excuses. I realized that I needed help. but I 00:10:22.639 --> 00:10:25.720 didn't know whether to find help. There are times 00:10:25.720 --> 00:10:28.500 in my life where God was someone. I mean, my 00:10:28.500 --> 00:10:33.120 mom believed. My dad didn't. And so they would 00:10:33.120 --> 00:10:37.440 send us to Anglican Church. They wouldn't come, 00:10:37.580 --> 00:10:42.480 but they would send us. And so we didn't know 00:10:42.480 --> 00:10:45.879 God. It was just, you know, it was boring, to 00:10:45.879 --> 00:10:49.200 be honest. And we couldn't wait to give out, 00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:51.879 but we did it. because to be obedient to our 00:10:51.879 --> 00:10:56.299 parents. But as I grew up, I started doing drugs 00:10:56.299 --> 00:11:00.519 at a young age and it escalated from there. Because 00:11:00.519 --> 00:11:05.700 of my trauma and what happened to me as a young 00:11:05.700 --> 00:11:08.899 person, I couldn't concentrate at school. I hated 00:11:08.899 --> 00:11:12.399 school. I couldn't learn. It was devastating 00:11:12.399 --> 00:11:16.740 for me. And right up to college, you know, I 00:11:16.740 --> 00:11:19.929 was just no good at school. And I was only good 00:11:19.929 --> 00:11:23.230 at sports and music. And so that's what I used 00:11:23.230 --> 00:11:27.750 to focus on, the sports. I mean, in New Zealand, 00:11:27.809 --> 00:11:31.370 we play rugby and similar to gridiron, but we 00:11:31.370 --> 00:11:34.190 don't wear pads and helmets and stuff like that. 00:11:34.350 --> 00:11:39.250 Yeah, it's kind of brutal. Yeah, it's good for 00:11:39.250 --> 00:11:41.169 guys who want to get rid of their frustration. 00:11:42.889 --> 00:11:46.990 But even for that, even though I was a good rugby 00:11:46.990 --> 00:11:53.659 player, I wasn't consistent on disciplining myself. 00:11:54.820 --> 00:11:58.340 And so it just escalated from there. I caught my wife, my first wife, 00:12:07.679 --> 00:12:10.460 in bed with someone and lost her. And that's 00:12:10.460 --> 00:12:14.340 how I ended up in prison. And so I was given 00:12:14.340 --> 00:12:17.519 three and a half, five years actually. And I 00:12:17.519 --> 00:12:20.779 did three and a half years. But, you know, there's 00:12:20.779 --> 00:12:23.200 a saying where God turns all things around for 00:12:23.200 --> 00:12:29.539 good. Right. And he did that because through 00:12:29.539 --> 00:12:32.080 that hard time and through the hurts and through 00:12:32.080 --> 00:12:35.860 the pain in my life, I had to call out to God. 00:12:35.919 --> 00:12:38.600 Otherwise, I was a goner. I wouldn't have lived 00:12:38.600 --> 00:12:43.899 very long if I didn't find God. And because I 00:12:43.899 --> 00:12:48.220 did find God and I was in prison, the Lord told 00:12:48.220 --> 00:12:51.120 me to fast and pray. That's where 00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:05.539 I learned to pray and that's where I learned 00:13:05.539 --> 00:13:09.700 to fast. Wow. Yeah. And I used to listen to different 00:13:09.700 --> 00:13:12.659 ones because we would have a television in our 00:13:12.659 --> 00:13:16.190 room. And that's where I'd listen to different 00:13:16.190 --> 00:13:19.950 people, Derek Prince. Good teaching there. Dobson. 00:13:20.129 --> 00:13:24.129 Yeah, he was my favorite. Joyce Myers. Dr. James 00:13:24.129 --> 00:13:28.649 Dobson. James Dobson, yeah. Okay. Yeah, I'd listen 00:13:28.649 --> 00:13:32.070 to his shows all the time. One of the stories 00:13:32.070 --> 00:13:36.090 in prison was my first inmate was a gang leader, 00:13:36.210 --> 00:13:39.009 and he was in the mongrel mob, just what you've 00:13:39.009 --> 00:13:42.110 heard. So the mongrel mob was the place where 00:13:42.110 --> 00:13:44.830 – They were all in prison. Where Sandy and Princess 00:13:44.830 --> 00:13:47.730 were put in the middle of them, right? Yes, yes. 00:13:47.870 --> 00:13:50.330 The gang that they were talking about. Yeah, 00:13:50.389 --> 00:13:52.929 the mongrel mob. Well, he was the youngest leader 00:13:52.929 --> 00:13:57.409 and he was my roommate. Wow. And all I would 00:13:57.409 --> 00:14:01.370 do was pray and read my Bible and listen to a 00:14:01.370 --> 00:14:03.750 Christian radio station on my little transistor 00:14:03.750 --> 00:14:08.450 radio in prison. Wow. And so he had no other 00:14:08.450 --> 00:14:11.769 choice to listen. And anyway, he said to me one 00:14:11.769 --> 00:14:14.690 day, How come you're in here? And I told him, 00:14:14.789 --> 00:14:18.570 I said, I've been violent most of my life. And 00:14:18.570 --> 00:14:20.889 he says, I can relate to that because I have 00:14:20.889 --> 00:14:24.909 been too. And so we started to connect. And anyway, 00:14:25.049 --> 00:14:27.289 long story short, he gave his life to the Lord. 00:14:27.389 --> 00:14:32.509 Glory to God. And that's when I escalated in 00:14:32.509 --> 00:14:35.580 the Lord. showed me that I needed to fast and 00:14:35.580 --> 00:14:37.539 pray, that God was going to do something great. 00:14:37.700 --> 00:14:42.059 Wow. And we had a revival in the prisons. Hallelujah. 00:14:42.639 --> 00:14:45.860 The prison that I was in, they were all mostly 00:14:45.860 --> 00:14:49.659 Freemasons. Oh, wow. And so they tried everything 00:14:49.659 --> 00:14:54.539 to stop us from getting churches in, and they 00:14:54.539 --> 00:14:57.570 would do everything they could, but God. as we 00:14:57.570 --> 00:15:00.710 know is greater than that. So he opened the doors 00:15:00.710 --> 00:15:03.529 for us to get other people to come in. And that's 00:15:03.529 --> 00:15:06.509 when I met my wife, Sarah, because I had been 00:15:06.509 --> 00:15:10.490 parted and I got a divorce. And anyway, the Lord 00:15:10.490 --> 00:15:14.809 says, this is your wife. I says, really? I says, 00:15:14.870 --> 00:15:17.409 well, that'll be cool because they would come 00:15:17.409 --> 00:15:20.110 in. But she was right. You know, we were on fire 00:15:20.110 --> 00:15:23.659 then. There was a great movement of God. People 00:15:23.659 --> 00:15:26.940 would come to my cell room and say, there's something 00:15:26.940 --> 00:15:29.039 different about you. What is it? And I says, 00:15:29.220 --> 00:15:33.080 well, I'm a Christian. I love Jesus, man. He's 00:15:33.080 --> 00:15:35.779 changed my life. And so I'd share my testimony, 00:15:35.840 --> 00:15:38.679 how I was a drug dealer, how I was into drugs 00:15:38.679 --> 00:15:41.059 and how I was violent. And they could all relate 00:15:41.059 --> 00:15:44.220 to that. Most of them were in because of those 00:15:44.220 --> 00:15:47.059 things. And, you know, most people are looking 00:15:47.059 --> 00:15:50.980 for a way out. Right. It's a mask they put on, 00:15:51.320 --> 00:15:55.059 the staunchness and, you know, I'm a gangbanger 00:15:55.059 --> 00:15:57.879 and all this. But it's really because they're 00:15:57.879 --> 00:16:00.500 hurt. You know, they're looking for love. That's 00:16:00.500 --> 00:16:03.940 right. And so they would come to my room and 00:16:03.940 --> 00:16:06.200 I would share my story and then I'd pray for 00:16:06.200 --> 00:16:07.720 them and then they'd give their lives to the 00:16:07.720 --> 00:16:10.899 Lord. Thank you, Jesus. The prison I was in, 00:16:10.960 --> 00:16:13.399 they had never had baptisms before, and we started 00:16:13.399 --> 00:16:19.240 baptizing the inmates.
