Pick up a snake, no, 00:11:20.899 --> 00:11:23.899 right? But he picked up the snake and it became 00:11:23.899 --> 00:11:29.039 the staff again. He had the hand, he put his 00:11:29.039 --> 00:11:32.740 hand in his coat, he took it out, leprosy. Took 00:11:32.740 --> 00:11:36.440 it back in, took it out, it's gone, right? That 00:11:36.440 --> 00:11:38.039 would be cool if that worked for acne, right? 00:11:40.460 --> 00:11:43.860 That'd be sweet, right? What was he doing? Who has the power 00:13:05.629 --> 00:13:09.649 to forgive sins but God? And Jesus miraculously 00:13:09.649 --> 00:13:13.289 knows what's going on in their heart. Verse four, 00:13:13.730 --> 00:13:15.429 Jesus knowing their thoughts said, wherefore 00:13:15.429 --> 00:13:18.529 think ye evil in your hearts? We know 00:22:15.519 --> 00:22:17.880 that there were people who tried to counterfeit 00:22:17.880 --> 00:22:20.319 the work of the Spirit of God and spiritual gifts 00:22:20.319 --> 00:22:22.319 like healings and tongues and other miracles 00:22:22.319 --> 00:22:24.460 and sign gifts. For instance, if you go read 00:22:24.460 --> 00:22:27.559 in Acts chapter 19, there was people that were 00:22:27.559 --> 00:22:30.869 trying to do exorcisms and other signs. And there's 00:22:30.869 --> 00:22:32.769 even a guy who's demon possessed is like, I know 00:22:32.769 --> 00:22:34.670 Jesus and I know Paul, but I don't know who you 00:22:34.670 --> 00:22:37.329 are. And he chased him out of the house. Crazy. 00:22:38.170 --> 00:22:41.150 There were people that were asking to pay, hey, 00:22:41.210 --> 00:22:42.950 can I pay you so that you can give me the same 00:22:42.950 --> 00:22:45.430 power you have? What he's saying 00:23:20.740 --> 00:23:24.140 is, You need to discern what's happening in your 00:23:24.140 --> 00:23:27.640 services and which thing that's being said is 00:23:27.640 --> 00:23:30.319 coming from the Holy Spirit. Even though something's being 00:23:32.859 --> 00:23:34.759 done in the name of the Holy Spirit, it doesn't 00:23:34.759 --> 00:23:37.279 mean that it's the Holy Spirit doing it. Does 00:23:37.279 --> 00:23:40.420 that make sense? That's going on today. There 00:23:40.420 --> 00:23:42.079 are things that people are saying the Spirit's 00:23:42.079 --> 00:23:44.980 doing, the Spirit has nothing to do with. How 00:23:44.980 --> 00:23:46.880 do I know? Because it goes against what the word 00:23:46.880 --> 00:23:50.890 of God says. Okay, so Paul says hey if 00:24:07.170 --> 00:24:09.130 Jesus somebody says that Jesus is a curse That's 00:24:09.130 --> 00:24:11.509 not the Holy Spirit and that no man can say that 00:24:11.509 --> 00:24:14.880 Jesus is Lord, but by the Holy Ghost When we 00:24:14.880 --> 00:24:17.180 get to chapter 14, Paul's addressing the church 00:24:17.180 --> 00:24:19.859 at Corinth who had been exercising the gift of 00:24:19.859 --> 00:24:23.440 the Spirit, some authentically and some in a 00:24:23.440 --> 00:24:26.799 counterfeit way. They had been seeking to do 00:24:26.799 --> 00:24:30.720 the gifts of the Spirit and certainly had pined, 00:24:31.079 --> 00:24:34.619 desired, gone after the more extravagant ones 00:24:34.619 --> 00:24:39.140 and they had been doing this without love. They 00:24:39.140 --> 00:24:41.599 had been trying to do all those things without 00:24:41.599 --> 00:24:44.900 love. So what was the problem? Why was Paul taking 00:24:44.900 --> 00:24:49.099 all this time to chapter 12, 13, and 14? What 00:24:49.099 --> 00:24:50.779 was the problem in the church he was dealing 00:24:50.779 --> 00:24:53.839 with? Well, he was dealing with disorder, as 00:24:53.839 --> 00:24:56.500 we're gonna read in chapter 14, disorder during 00:24:56.500 --> 00:25:00.279 the worship time. He was. dealing with an emphasis 00:25:00.279 --> 00:25:03.359 on certain temporary partial gifts over love. 00:25:03.839 --> 00:25:06.319 He was dealing with counterfeiting some of the 00:25:06.319 --> 00:25:09.079 showy gifts that was going on and that all of 00:25:09.079 --> 00:25:12.839 that was being done without love. So Paul's solution 00:25:12.839 --> 00:25:15.859 in chapter 14, this is seven pages of introduction, 00:25:15.960 --> 00:25:19.779 are you with me? Paul's solution in chapter 14 00:25:19.779 --> 00:25:22.799 through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit was 00:25:22.799 --> 00:25:26.940 to tell them to emphasize prophecy over tongues. 00:25:29.639 --> 00:25:34.180 prophecy over tongues. He told them to regulate 00:25:34.180 --> 00:25:37.299 their use of tongues in a way that would force 00:25:37.299 --> 00:25:40.359 the counterfeit tongues to not have a place in 00:25:40.359 --> 00:25:44.599 the service. Now, that's the direct effect of 00:25:44.599 --> 00:25:46.660 what was going on and what he was trying to have 00:25:46.660 --> 00:25:51.619 happen in the church at Corinth. I believe that 00:25:51.619 --> 00:25:55.049 tongues have ceased. So we don't have that problem 00:25:55.049 --> 00:25:56.670 in our service that there's all kinds of chaos 00:25:56.670 --> 00:25:58.349 because people are trying to speak in tongues 00:25:58.349 --> 00:26:00.730 or Counterfeiting tongues that's not happening 00:26:00.730 --> 00:26:03.309 for us. So what does this mean for us? How does 00:26:03.309 --> 00:26:08.369 this apply to us? We now have the Word of God 00:26:08.369 --> 00:26:12.369 The record of God's revelation preserved and 00:26:12.369 --> 00:26:16.210 published for us in a complete way You do not 00:26:16.210 --> 00:26:18.710 need me as someone who proclaims thus saith the 00:26:18.710 --> 00:26:22.480 Lord to back that up to back up these claims 00:26:22.480 --> 00:26:26.099 with a sign gift. Spiritual gifting and ministry should be 00:28:21.450 --> 00:28:23.849 administered with love is the bull's eye. This 00:28:23.849 --> 00:28:26.190 was the context of 1 Corinthians 13. They were 00:28:26.190 --> 00:28:28.710 trying to emphasize all these public, miraculous 00:28:28.710 --> 00:28:30.970 gifts, but doing it without love. It wasn't wrong 00:28:30.970 --> 00:28:34.710 for them to desire the gifts of the Spirit, and 00:28:34.710 --> 00:28:36.329 they were, but they were doing it without love. 00:28:36.470 --> 00:28:39.490 But here in verse one, he says, okay, do this 00:28:39.490 --> 00:28:43.089 with love and desire spiritual gifts. It's good 00:28:43.089 --> 00:28:46.380 for you to desire for God to do stuff. But he 00:28:46.380 --> 00:28:50.400 says rather that you may prophesy. When he says 00:28:50.400 --> 00:28:53.980 rather here, he's saying prioritize. Paul tells them that they are, as they 00:28:59.400 --> 00:29:02.079 are passionately desiring spiritual gifts to 00:29:02.079 --> 00:29:05.640 prioritize prophecy. Why, Paul? Why should we 00:29:05.640 --> 00:29:08.019 prioritize one gift over another? Why should 00:29:08.019 --> 00:29:11.609 we prioritize desiring? Prophecy, says the Corinthians. 00:29:11.750 --> 00:29:14.730 Well, he gives them verse two. For he that speaketh 00:29:14.730 --> 00:29:18.769 in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but 00:29:18.769 --> 00:29:22.329 unto God, for no man understandeth him, howbeit 00:29:22.329 --> 00:29:26.089 in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. One key 00:29:26.089 --> 00:29:28.450 to understanding this passage is to notice when 00:29:28.450 --> 00:29:31.930 the word translated tongue's plural and when 00:29:31.930 --> 00:29:35.809 it's translated tongue singular. Notice that 00:29:35.809 --> 00:29:39.960 in your Bible that the word unknown is supplied 00:29:39.960 --> 00:29:42.880 by the King James translators. If you're talking 00:29:42.880 --> 00:29:46.720 about ecstatic speech, which is counterfeit language, 00:29:47.119 --> 00:29:51.460 there's only one. There are not multiple gibberishes, 00:29:51.619 --> 00:29:55.279 right? There's just one gibberish, right? One, 00:29:56.380 --> 00:29:58.420 blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, right? There's 00:29:58.420 --> 00:30:02.480 only one of them. There are not multiple gibberishes. 00:30:02.500 --> 00:30:04.259 There's a gibberish language and then multiple 00:30:04.259 --> 00:30:08.039 kinds of known languages. I believe that when the word 00:30:16.000 --> 00:30:20.039 unknown is supplied, it's dealing with counterfeit 00:30:20.039 --> 00:30:23.180 languages or at least languages for which no 00:30:23.180 --> 00:30:26.359 one is interpreting. We know that the book of 00:30:26.359 --> 00:30:29.460 Acts, there were known languages. They were assigned 00:30:29.460 --> 00:30:31.759 to those who heard it, especially the Jews, that 00:30:31.759 --> 00:30:33.980 led to getting revelation from God through prophecy 00:30:33.980 --> 00:30:38.150 and knowledge. He says here, verse two, that 00:30:38.150 --> 00:30:40.369 he that speaketh in an unknown tongue, a tongue 00:30:40.369 --> 00:30:46.069 that's given but not interpreted, a tongue that's 00:30:46.069 --> 00:30:47.950 either counterfeit and it's just a bunch of gibberish 00:30:47.950 --> 00:30:51.529 or a tongue that's given but then nobody understands 00:30:51.529 --> 00:30:53.329 it because nobody speaks the language that they're 00:30:53.329 --> 00:30:58.369 speaking. He's not speaking to men. No one understands 00:30:58.369 --> 00:31:01.609 him. Howbeit the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 00:31:03.979 --> 00:31:06.740 They were assigned to those who heard it, these 00:31:06.740 --> 00:31:09.380 languages. What is it? Verse three, edification. 00:31:47.660 --> 00:31:49.700 What does edification mean? It's building up, 00:31:50.380 --> 00:31:53.599 exhortation. What does that mean? Ah. Verse 14, for if I pray in an unknown 00:40:43.909 --> 00:40:45.809 tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding 00:40:45.809 --> 00:40:49.389 is unfruitful. I believe that verse 14 is speaking 00:40:49.389 --> 00:40:51.130 of the counterfeit. He's not talking about the 00:40:51.130 --> 00:40:53.570 Holy Spirit. He's talking about the person's 00:40:53.570 --> 00:40:56.329 spirit. There wasn't a new revelation or even a 00:43:01.539 --> 00:43:04.360 newer New Testament that's gonna come out. So 00:43:04.360 --> 00:43:06.059 what does this mean for the church now? Well, 00:43:06.119 --> 00:43:15.019 here's some points of application. Do you understand 00:43:15.019 --> 00:43:20.190 the treasure we have here? you can understand 00:43:20.190 --> 00:43:26.489 your Bible. You have everything God wants you 00:43:26.489 --> 00:43:30.369 to have. And he wrote it out and it's in your 00:43:30.369 --> 00:43:37.329 language. And it's valuable for life, it's sufficient 00:43:37.329 --> 00:43:41.849 for life and godliness. Like you have what God 00:43:41.849 --> 00:43:44.010 thinks about all the things he wants you to think 00:43:44.010 --> 00:43:55.079 about. When you choose a church, look for the 00:46:56.699 --> 00:46:59.420 one that makes biblical preaching central. When 00:46:59.420 --> 00:47:02.360 you sit under teaching, come with an expectant 00:47:02.360 --> 00:47:04.559 heart, ready to be edified, exhorted, and comforted 00:47:04.559 --> 00:47:07.280 by God's word. Number three, value understanding 00:47:14.420 --> 00:47:18.460 over experience. We live in a feeling -centered 00:47:18.460 --> 00:47:21.780 age where subjective experience often trumps 00:47:21.780 --> 00:47:25.179 objective truth. But Paul emphasizes that what 00:47:25.179 --> 00:47:27.800 matters in corporate worship is not how spiritual 00:47:27.800 --> 00:47:30.960 we appear, but how much the congregation is built 00:47:30.960 --> 00:47:34.340 up through understandable truth. When our personal 00:47:34.340 --> 00:47:37.179 devotions, our Sunday school discussions, our 00:47:37.179 --> 00:47:40.960 corporate worship happens, Let's prioritize clear 00:47:40.960 --> 00:47:43.780 understanding of God's word over mystical experiences 00:47:43.780 --> 00:47:48.019 that cannot be evaluated or verified.
