Our first 00:02:48.520 --> 00:02:54.680 one by him is 1999's Sleepy Hollow. This film 00:02:54.680 --> 00:02:57.479 is based off of the legend of Sleepy Hollow, 00:02:57.639 --> 00:03:00.520 which is a story by Washington Irving. If you're 00:03:00.520 --> 00:03:03.419 not familiar with the story, the story centers 00:03:03.419 --> 00:03:06.039 around a character called the Headless Horseman. 00:03:06.800 --> 00:03:10.520 So the name kind of describes this character. 00:03:10.580 --> 00:03:13.479 This character is a ghost. It is someone who 00:03:13.479 --> 00:03:15.939 was a horseman, someone who rode on a horse and 00:03:15.939 --> 00:03:19.479 his head has been removed. It's not overly done, but just so you're 00:04:10.860 --> 00:04:15.539 aware of it. It is there. So if you like 00:06:48.439 --> 00:06:50.959 musicals or animated film, it might be a great 00:06:50.959 --> 00:06:54.600 option. Or if you have maybe teenagers or older 00:06:54.600 --> 00:06:56.660 children that you would like to watch with, this 00:06:56.660 --> 00:07:01.339 could be an option for you. The film is a little 00:07:01.339 --> 00:07:05.360 bit of a controversial topic when it comes to 00:07:05.360 --> 00:07:07.939 if it's a Halloween film or not. It's not really 00:07:07.939 --> 00:07:12.339 a very intense controversy, but some people argue 00:07:12.339 --> 00:07:14.319 that it's not a Halloween film, and I'm going 00:07:14.319 --> 00:07:17.779 to describe the plot so you can understand why. 00:07:18.399 --> 00:07:22.339 The movie centers around this character called 00:07:22.339 --> 00:07:25.100 Jack Skeleton. So Jack Skeleton, like his last 00:07:25.100 --> 00:07:28.879 name implies, is a skeleton and he lives in Halloween 00:07:28.879 --> 00:07:32.639 Town. The movie is based in Halloween Town, but 00:07:32.639 --> 00:07:36.279 it actually takes place at Christmas time. So 00:07:36.279 --> 00:07:39.540 part of the plot is that Jack Skeleton goes to 00:07:39.540 --> 00:07:42.399 Christmas town and decides to try to take over 00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:46.019 Christmas. He actually meets Santa Claus. So 00:07:46.019 --> 00:07:48.120 there's a lot of Christmas themes. And because 00:07:48.120 --> 00:07:50.540 of that, people argue that it's actually not 00:07:50.540 --> 00:07:55.110 a Halloween film. It's a Christmas film. Danny Elfman was the 00:08:21.769 --> 00:08:25.120 composer on this film. And he was also the composer 00:08:25.120 --> 00:08:27.879 on the other two Tim Burton films. He and Tim 00:08:27.879 --> 00:08:31.339 Burton have a pretty close relationship. So Danny 00:08:31.339 --> 00:08:34.080 Elfman did the music. He also did the singing 00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:36.539 voice for Jack Skeleton. And the reason he was 00:08:36.539 --> 00:08:39.320 able to do the singing voice is because he was 00:08:39.320 --> 00:08:41.899 actually the front man, the lead singer of a 00:08:41.899 --> 00:08:45.700 band from the 1980s called Oingo Boingo. And 00:09:19.059 --> 00:09:23.269 it is called Ghostbusters. Now, this movie was 00:09:23.269 --> 00:09:27.070 a massive hit when it came out in 1984. It was 00:09:27.070 --> 00:09:30.649 considered to be a cultural phenomenon and was 00:09:30.649 --> 00:09:33.389 the second highest grossing film of the entire 00:09:33.389 --> 00:09:38.090 year. The film stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, 00:09:38.129 --> 00:09:40.889 Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Rick Moranis. 00:09:41.070 --> 00:09:44.730 When it comes to 1980s comedy, you really can't 00:09:44.730 --> 00:09:48.950 get better than that cast. The movie is more 00:09:48.950 --> 00:09:53.399 of a mixture of comedy, action, and horror. And 00:09:53.399 --> 00:09:57.720 it was extremely popular. The plot centers around 00:09:57.720 --> 00:10:01.399 this group of Ghostbusters. So what they mean 00:10:01.399 --> 00:10:03.899 by Ghostbusters is that these are the people 00:10:03.899 --> 00:10:08.440 that you call when you have a ghost. It wasn't as well -received, let's 00:11:11.570 --> 00:11:16.009 say. It was a little bit mixed reviews, wasn't 00:11:16.009 --> 00:11:19.070 as popular, but it's a fine movie. There's also a newer sequel that's called 00:11:24.850 --> 00:11:28.309 Ghostbusters Afterlife. Now what that 00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:00.159 means is that when this film originally came 00:12:00.159 --> 00:12:03.940 out, it was not as well received. It was not 00:12:03.940 --> 00:12:06.860 like Ghostbusters. It did not have the cultural 00:12:06.860 --> 00:12:10.409 impact. So even though there was mixed reviews 00:12:10.409 --> 00:12:13.190 and it did okay at the theaters, it didn't become 00:12:13.190 --> 00:12:17.730 popular until after it got released on VHS and 00:12:17.730 --> 00:12:20.389 then years later on DVD when people could watch 00:12:20.389 --> 00:12:22.850 at home. We don't have time to get into 00:13:01.720 --> 00:13:03.480 that today. That'll have to be on a different 00:13:03.480 --> 00:13:06.580 episode. But it was a period of history where 00:13:06.580 --> 00:13:10.220 women were accused of being witches. And that's 00:13:10.220 --> 00:13:12.200 the setting for the beginning of the film.
