So when 00:03:48.969 --> 00:03:53.419 you see him in the text today, washing. his nets 00:03:53.419 --> 00:03:56.780 early in the morning, that's not a good sign. 00:03:57.580 --> 00:04:02.680 It had to feel like total defeat for an expert 00:04:02.680 --> 00:04:07.120 fisherman, somebody who prided themselves on 00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:12.439 catching a lot of fish. And for Peter, this wasn't 00:04:12.439 --> 00:04:17.779 just something that hurt his bottom line as a 00:04:17.779 --> 00:04:22.269 career fisherman. Obviously, no fish meant No 00:04:22.269 --> 00:04:26.829 payment, right? No money. But it also hurt his 00:04:26.829 --> 00:04:31.410 ego. It hurt his pride. It signals something 00:04:31.410 --> 00:04:34.430 to perhaps other fishermen in the area, others 00:04:34.430 --> 00:04:37.310 who may have been watching and observing that 00:04:37.310 --> 00:04:42.430 something might be wrong with Peter. Because 00:04:42.430 --> 00:04:47.149 this was the one thing in his life, the one thing 00:04:47.149 --> 00:04:50.779 that he could say, I'm good at that. Our health has hit a rough 00:06:48.139 --> 00:06:51.339 patch and we've got some uncertainty. Got follow 00:06:51.339 --> 00:06:53.220 -up appointments. You don't want a follow -up 00:06:53.220 --> 00:06:54.879 appointment. Just tell me what it is right now. 00:06:54.920 --> 00:06:57.879 No, we've got to do another test. We don't like 00:06:57.879 --> 00:07:00.459 being in that place of having to do another test 00:07:00.459 --> 00:07:04.360 and feeling empty. But yet, for one reason or another, we 00:07:20.910 --> 00:07:24.490 just feel spiritually stagnant, plateaued in 00:07:24.490 --> 00:07:26.949 some way. And we don't like those feelings of 00:07:26.949 --> 00:07:30.029 coming up empty, but that emptiness is often 00:07:30.029 --> 00:07:33.629 an invitation for God to show up and begin to 00:07:33.629 --> 00:07:36.850 speak into our life, begin to continue the process 00:07:36.850 --> 00:07:41.449 of molding and making us into a strong disciple. 00:07:42.149 --> 00:07:45.089 And at this stage of Peter's life, he was already... 00:07:45.420 --> 00:07:47.500 at a point where he had met Jesus. As we have 00:07:47.500 --> 00:07:51.139 heard in this series already, he had received 00:07:51.139 --> 00:07:54.980 the formal and official call to follow the Lord 00:07:54.980 --> 00:07:59.360 as a disciple. A couple weeks ago, that's exactly 00:07:59.360 --> 00:08:01.540 what I preached about. The Lord had officially 00:08:01.540 --> 00:08:05.959 called him to follow him. But as we see here 00:08:05.959 --> 00:08:09.920 in this passage, in this scene, Peter has obviously 00:08:09.920 --> 00:08:14.079 gone back to fishing to some degree. He was at 00:08:14.079 --> 00:08:18.579 least a part -time fisherman. And if Peter was 00:08:18.579 --> 00:08:20.680 a part -time fisherman, that means that he was 00:08:20.680 --> 00:08:25.220 also a part -time follower. Even though Christ 00:08:25.220 --> 00:08:29.079 had called him to follow him all the way, there 00:08:29.079 --> 00:08:30.860 was still something in Peter that felt like he 00:08:30.860 --> 00:08:34.600 had to go back, you know, and still kind of do 00:08:34.600 --> 00:08:37.620 it on a part -time basis. Still got to do these 00:08:37.620 --> 00:08:41.580 things. Still not ready to follow Jesus all the 00:08:41.580 --> 00:08:46.700 way. And so that's exactly the place that he's 00:08:46.700 --> 00:08:49.940 in mentally and spiritually. And so in order 00:08:49.940 --> 00:08:54.279 to push Peter into his purpose and into his destiny 00:08:54.279 --> 00:08:58.039 as a disciple, as a future apostle and a future 00:08:58.039 --> 00:09:02.259 preacher of the gospel, God allowed him to come 00:09:02.259 --> 00:09:07.259 up empty. God allowed his nets to come up empty. 00:09:07.399 --> 00:09:12.620 Why? So that Peter would ultimately learn that 00:09:12.620 --> 00:09:16.120 it was not his fishing skills, that it was not 00:09:16.120 --> 00:09:19.720 the weather that day or any other aspect, but 00:09:19.720 --> 00:09:24.159 it was God that controls the harvest. Somebody 00:09:24.159 --> 00:09:29.659 say amen today. God wanted to teach Peter, I'm 00:09:29.659 --> 00:09:33.919 in control of everything, not you. It's me that 00:09:33.919 --> 00:09:37.360 is holding your world together, holding your 00:09:37.360 --> 00:09:40.299 life together. The first thing that we must learn 00:10:08.029 --> 00:10:11.940 in this message today, like Peter learned, is 00:10:11.940 --> 00:10:16.340 that we need to let Jesus into your boat. Someone 00:10:16.340 --> 00:10:22.779 say, let him in. Verse 3 says that Jesus stepped 00:10:22.779 --> 00:10:27.299 into Peter's boat and began to preach to the 00:10:27.299 --> 00:10:32.059 crowds that were gathered. Jesus had been teaching, 00:10:32.179 --> 00:10:36.039 and a crowd of listeners had been following him. 00:10:36.740 --> 00:10:40.419 And before you know it, He's at the sea, at the 00:10:40.419 --> 00:10:43.440 lake, and he's being pressed up against the shores. 00:10:45.039 --> 00:10:48.120 And it was just divine providence. It was God's 00:10:48.120 --> 00:10:50.240 plan all along that he would be in that position. 00:10:51.559 --> 00:10:55.120 And so he sees the empty boat of Peter, and he 00:10:55.120 --> 00:10:58.940 steps into that boat. And from that boat, he 00:10:58.940 --> 00:11:03.960 begins to preach to those who are hanging on 00:11:03.960 --> 00:11:08.110 every word that he is speaking. I love the irony 00:11:08.110 --> 00:11:12.529 of God. I love the way that God works because 00:11:12.529 --> 00:11:16.830 God's ways are not like ours. What we like to 00:11:16.830 --> 00:11:18.929 do is pour gasoline on something that's already 00:11:18.929 --> 00:11:23.929 on fire. Huh? And then take credit for it. I 00:11:23.929 --> 00:11:26.990 believed in you. Yeah, after I already was like 00:11:26.990 --> 00:11:32.409 a success you did. But Jesus is not like us. 00:11:32.929 --> 00:11:36.679 He stepped into... A situation where the odds 00:11:36.679 --> 00:11:39.700 were already against Peter. His boat was empty. 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:43.639 And this is the irony of God, of stepping in 00:11:43.639 --> 00:11:47.539 to places and choosing areas of life that are 00:11:47.539 --> 00:11:52.779 embarrassing to us. Like Peter must have thought 00:11:52.779 --> 00:11:57.299 in that moment, Jesus, of all days, you wanted 00:11:57.299 --> 00:12:02.509 to show up and have a preaching revival. This 00:12:02.509 --> 00:12:05.049 was the day you couldn't have come at a different 00:12:05.049 --> 00:12:08.590 time when maybe I had a little more to show for. 00:12:08.970 --> 00:12:11.929 You couldn't have come at an hour where at least 00:12:11.929 --> 00:12:14.710 I caught a couple of fish. But Jesus, you mean 00:12:14.710 --> 00:12:17.389 to tell me you had to pick the one day where 00:12:17.389 --> 00:12:20.710 I had nothing to show for. And you stepped into 00:12:20.710 --> 00:12:24.730 my boat and you decided to turn my empty boat 00:12:24.730 --> 00:12:30.899 into a pulpit. Well, that is how God works. Just 00:12:30.899 --> 00:12:34.960 when you think your life, your situation is too 00:12:34.960 --> 00:12:38.940 embarrassing, too flawed, fractured, or frustrated 00:12:38.940 --> 00:12:43.139 for God to do anything, is exactly the ideal 00:12:43.139 --> 00:12:46.840 condition that God looks for to step in and to 00:12:46.840 --> 00:12:50.240 show you that he has not forsaken you and that 00:12:50.240 --> 00:12:54.059 he has a plan to use and to bless and anoint 00:12:54.059 --> 00:12:59.230 your life. So God doesn't look at our situations 00:12:59.230 --> 00:13:02.750 the way that we do. The thing that we're most 00:13:02.750 --> 00:13:07.210 embarrassed about, most ashamed of, least likely 00:13:07.210 --> 00:13:10.679 to put on our resumes. That's the area that God 00:13:10.679 --> 00:13:14.580 looks for in order to step into. And this ought 00:13:14.580 --> 00:13:17.320 to encourage somebody today who's thinking about 00:13:17.320 --> 00:13:20.200 areas of your life and your ministry and your 00:13:20.200 --> 00:13:22.779 heart, your family, where you think surely God 00:13:22.779 --> 00:13:26.039 is not attracted to any of this. Surely God would 00:13:26.039 --> 00:13:28.360 want to bypass this. But I'm here to tell you 00:13:28.360 --> 00:13:31.399 that God will turn your pain into a platform. 00:13:32.700 --> 00:13:35.759 God will turn your pain into a pulpit. He'll 00:13:35.759 --> 00:13:38.600 turn your disappointment into a platform. And 00:13:38.600 --> 00:13:40.899 he'll use those areas of our life that we think 00:13:40.899 --> 00:13:44.399 are wasted and broken and dysfunctional and offer 00:13:44.399 --> 00:13:47.440 no value. That brokenness 00:15:23.700 --> 00:15:27.340 is the birthplace of real significance. God has 00:15:27.340 --> 00:15:32.600 to break us in order to make us.
