It kind 00:06:13.379 --> 00:06:17.579 of helps keep him in business. I want you to 00:06:17.579 --> 00:06:20.899 understand that hell, is not a scare tactic. 00:06:21.779 --> 00:06:27.220 It's not a fictional or metaphorical place. In the Bible, it evokes more emotion, 00:07:20.620 --> 00:07:24.980 more thought, contemplation, maybe even repentance, 00:07:25.279 --> 00:07:29.079 than the one that we are looking at today. Jesus 00:07:29.079 --> 00:07:34.199 tells a story, and scholars are not all agreed 00:07:34.199 --> 00:07:38.939 on whether this story was a parable or a true 00:07:38.939 --> 00:07:42.079 account. Some say that it was a true account 00:07:42.079 --> 00:07:45.740 because he uses names, and most of the parables 00:07:45.740 --> 00:07:49.089 that Jesus teaches, He doesn't name the people 00:07:49.089 --> 00:07:52.370 in it. They're like anonymous figures. But in 00:07:52.370 --> 00:07:56.329 this story, names are mentioned. And so some 00:07:56.329 --> 00:07:58.269 believe that that means that this was a true 00:07:58.269 --> 00:08:02.149 account. And whether it's a true account or a 00:08:02.149 --> 00:08:06.170 parable is really not the fact of the matter. 00:08:06.250 --> 00:08:10.290 It's the content of the story. And Jesus gives 00:08:10.290 --> 00:08:14.800 us a sobering look into life after death. Seen 00:08:14.800 --> 00:08:18.819 through the eyes of a rich man who lived a sinful 00:08:18.819 --> 00:08:24.920 life and a beggar named Lazarus who lived a godly 00:08:24.920 --> 00:08:28.600 life. These two men lived very different lives, 00:08:28.879 --> 00:08:32.679 different roads, different decisions, different 00:08:32.679 --> 00:08:37.139 paths of life. One enjoyed a life of ease and 00:08:37.139 --> 00:08:42.850 opulence. The other? ate from the crumbs that 00:08:42.850 --> 00:08:47.370 fell from the rich man's table. One was presumably 00:08:47.370 --> 00:08:52.250 in good health, maybe could afford the best health 00:08:52.250 --> 00:08:56.690 care he can get, while the other had sores on 00:08:56.690 --> 00:09:00.289 his bodies. That as graphic as it sounds, as 00:09:00.289 --> 00:09:03.629 horrendous as it is, even the dogs would come 00:09:03.629 --> 00:09:07.070 and lick the sores as he begged at the gate of 00:09:07.070 --> 00:09:10.690 the rich man. One had it all, and one had... 00:09:12.710 --> 00:09:16.629 But here's the thing. Both of them died at some 00:09:16.629 --> 00:09:22.409 point. And when these men die, both wake up in 00:09:22.409 --> 00:09:28.850 eternity. Both wake up in eternity. One was carried, 00:09:29.070 --> 00:09:38.990 and another was buried. Now I know this topic makes us uncomfortable. 00:10:05.730 --> 00:10:07.610 But sometimes we have to be made uncomfortable. 00:10:09.519 --> 00:10:13.360 Somebody say amen. But sometimes we need to be 00:10:34.159 --> 00:10:37.980 made uncomfortable and. A subject like death 00:10:37.980 --> 00:10:42.360 makes us uncomfortable because we think we're 00:10:42.360 --> 00:10:46.460 just going to live here forever. But the reality 00:10:46.460 --> 00:10:52.559 is that there is a time for us all. There's a 00:10:52.559 --> 00:10:55.019 time for us all. Jesus said, and it came to pass 00:10:55.019 --> 00:11:00.059 that the beggar died and the rich man. You see, 00:11:00.100 --> 00:11:02.480 the thing about death is that death is the ultimate 00:11:02.480 --> 00:11:07.340 equalizer. It's the great equalizer. Death doesn't 00:11:07.340 --> 00:11:11.919 respect who you are. Death doesn't care how much 00:11:11.919 --> 00:11:15.039 money you have in your bank account. Death doesn't 00:11:15.039 --> 00:11:18.799 care who you know. Doesn't care what street you 00:11:18.799 --> 00:11:22.840 live on. Death doesn't care about any of those 00:11:22.840 --> 00:11:27.220 things. It is no respecter of persons. It is 00:11:27.220 --> 00:11:32.779 the ultimate equalizer. In some religious 00:12:50.240 --> 00:12:54.940 schools of thought, in some denominations, they 00:12:54.940 --> 00:12:59.570 teach this doctrine of purgatory. that says that 00:12:59.570 --> 00:13:03.330 there is this middle place that if you didn't 00:13:03.330 --> 00:13:05.309 do the right things in this life, you can go 00:13:05.309 --> 00:13:09.809 to this next in -between phase and kind of work 00:13:09.809 --> 00:13:12.750 things out there and have your sins purged there, 00:13:12.970 --> 00:13:17.070 and then you can qualify for heaven. It's kind 00:13:17.070 --> 00:13:22.529 of like a backup plan. I think people have made 00:13:22.529 --> 00:13:26.110 a lot of money on that backup plan, selling that 00:13:26.110 --> 00:13:31.399 backup plan to people. But there is no third 00:13:31.399 --> 00:13:34.940 option, my friend. There's only two. There's 00:13:34.940 --> 00:13:37.440 only two options. You're either, if you're born 00:13:37.440 --> 00:13:43.600 again, amen, born again of water, baptized in 00:13:43.600 --> 00:13:45.519 the name of Jesus Christ and filled with the 00:13:45.519 --> 00:13:47.899 Spirit and been living right, because you can't 00:13:47.899 --> 00:13:49.799 just get baptized and then go back to living 00:13:49.799 --> 00:13:54.620 in sin. You immediately enter the presence of 00:13:54.620 --> 00:14:00.110 God. Whoo! Praise be to the Lord. This is what 00:14:00.110 --> 00:14:04.129 Paul said. He said to be absent in the body is 00:14:04.129 --> 00:14:09.090 to be present with the Lord. You know, it's a big rock concert 00:15:41.330 --> 00:15:44.710 or something. And everyone's just going to live 00:15:44.710 --> 00:15:51.029 it up down there. And that's a big lie from the 00:15:51.029 --> 00:15:57.769 devil. Hell is not a party. That's one of his 00:15:57.769 --> 00:16:02.190 biggest lies. Some, they think that it's just 00:16:02.190 --> 00:16:05.529 a dark and lonely prison. You know, just going 00:16:05.529 --> 00:16:09.470 to sit there and just be lonely and, you know, 00:16:09.470 --> 00:16:12.110 in a dark place. And, I mean, that's not good, 00:16:12.190 --> 00:16:17.269 but it's much worse than that. Jesus said, and 00:16:17.269 --> 00:16:24.350 in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torment. 00:16:26.860 --> 00:16:29.679 And the first thing the rich man who this is 00:16:29.679 --> 00:16:33.720 describing feels after death, immediate pain. 00:16:36.700 --> 00:16:41.860 Immediate, conscious, he's aware, and it's relentless 00:16:41.860 --> 00:16:46.120 pain. He's awake, he's aware. Oh, my life has been hell on earth. 00:17:20.980 --> 00:17:23.859 No, I can assure you that hell and hell is worse 00:17:23.859 --> 00:17:28.059 than hell on earth. Not a theoretical hell, not 00:17:28.059 --> 00:17:31.599 a metaphorical hell, not a figment of one's imagination, 00:17:31.680 --> 00:17:36.579 but a literal place of torment. What was tormenting 00:17:36.579 --> 00:17:39.539 him physically there? Well, verse 24 tells us, 00:17:39.900 --> 00:17:44.039 Jesus said, then he cried, and he said, Father 00:17:44.039 --> 00:17:49.160 Abraham, Have mercy on me. You see, he's repenting, 00:17:49.160 --> 00:17:52.920 but it's too late. Oh, my God. There's a lot 00:17:52.920 --> 00:17:55.200 of repenting going on in hell, but it's too late. 00:17:59.160 --> 00:18:02.819 Have mercy on me. Send Lazarus that he may dip 00:18:02.819 --> 00:18:07.619 the tip of his finger in some water, just a little 00:18:07.619 --> 00:18:13.420 drop. And cool my tongue. Why? That's all 00:18:34.319 --> 00:18:39.000 he asked for. Just cool my tongue. But none can 00:18:39.000 --> 00:18:48.279 be found. There was none there. No drop. Oh, help us, Holy Ghost, 00:19:14.640 --> 00:19:18.859 today. In Mark 9, Jesus described hell as a place 00:19:18.859 --> 00:19:22.519 where the worm does not die. I'll spare you what 00:19:22.519 --> 00:19:25.140 that means today, but... But I'm just focused 00:19:25.140 --> 00:19:27.900 on the fact that he said, and the fire is not. 00:19:28.319 --> 00:19:32.839 Ultimately, a lake of fire awaits those who reject 00:19:32.839 --> 00:19:36.059 Christ. And all of these words that God, he's 00:19:36.059 --> 00:19:40.539 not talking about just metaphysical or, you know, 00:19:40.539 --> 00:19:43.920 just spiritual fire. He's talking about an actual 00:19:43.920 --> 00:19:48.140 flame. This is a place of torment. This is a 00:19:48.140 --> 00:19:52.259 place of physical pain, literal pain that never 00:19:52.259 --> 00:19:55.940 dies. This is a place where there is no water, 00:19:56.000 --> 00:19:59.160 a lake of fire. And you say, well, how could 00:19:59.160 --> 00:20:05.059 a loving God send anybody to hell? How could 00:20:05.059 --> 00:20:08.619 a good God send anybody? How could this place 00:20:08.619 --> 00:20:11.700 actually be if God is love and God is good and 00:20:11.700 --> 00:20:14.480 God is merciful? How could he send anybody there? 00:20:14.559 --> 00:20:17.559 Well, let me correct that line of thought today 00:20:17.559 --> 00:20:22.079 and tell you that God doesn't send anybody there. 00:20:22.180 --> 00:20:30.000 We are given a choice. Hallelujah. Hell is a 00:20:30.000 --> 00:20:32.700 place where the fire never dies and there's no 00:20:32.700 --> 00:20:34.940 water to quench your thirst. You don't have to go 00:20:37.480 --> 00:20:40.720 there because Jesus has already given us the 00:20:40.720 --> 00:20:45.500 water. He said, if anyone thirsts, come to me 00:20:45.500 --> 00:20:50.079 and drink. And so if you're thirsty today, if 00:20:50.079 --> 00:20:53.720 you want heaven today, all you got to do is drink 00:20:53.720 --> 00:21:07.119 the living water. Somebody give God. water is 00:21:07.119 --> 00:21:09.460 here. There won't be any water there, but there's 00:21:09.460 --> 00:21:13.240 water here. Hallelujah.
