That is what a pilgrim is. And when 00:02:51.530 --> 00:02:55.550 we hear the word pilgrim, I know for me, and 00:02:55.550 --> 00:02:59.189 like many of you, we might picture those early 00:02:59.189 --> 00:03:04.229 pioneers who boarded the Mayflower in the 1600s 00:03:04.229 --> 00:03:08.639 and... sailed across the Atlantic to land at 00:03:08.639 --> 00:03:11.900 Plymouth Rock. These groups of people were seeking 00:03:11.900 --> 00:03:17.259 religious freedom in an unfamiliar land. So when 00:03:17.259 --> 00:03:20.319 I think of a pilgrim, I think of those little 00:03:20.319 --> 00:03:22.819 black hats with the buckles on them, you know, 00:03:22.919 --> 00:03:25.960 and Thanksgiving turkey and all that. That's 00:03:25.960 --> 00:03:29.620 what I think. But long before those pilgrims, 00:03:29.620 --> 00:03:50.020 there was Abraham. The original pilgrim, And 00:03:50.020 --> 00:03:53.020 the thing about Abraham is that he was not driven 00:03:53.020 --> 00:03:59.759 by a personal desire to claim his piece of the 00:03:59.759 --> 00:04:03.590 pie. It wasn't just like... I don't know if some 00:04:03.590 --> 00:04:06.270 of you remember that song. I don't know what 00:04:06.270 --> 00:04:08.669 show it was, the Jeffersons, you know, moving 00:04:08.669 --> 00:04:11.990 on up. Abraham wasn't just trying to move it 00:04:11.990 --> 00:04:15.289 on up to the east side to get his piece of the 00:04:15.289 --> 00:04:17.069 pie. Anybody know what I'm talking about? Never 00:04:17.069 --> 00:04:19.269 mind. You guys are way too young. Praise God. 00:04:19.629 --> 00:04:22.589 But he wasn't just trying to move it on up to 00:04:22.589 --> 00:04:27.589 get his steak of the pie and to. and fulfill 00:04:27.589 --> 00:04:31.310 some personal ambition that he had in his life. 00:04:31.389 --> 00:04:34.370 He wasn't trying to, you know, move on up in 00:04:34.370 --> 00:04:38.350 the world, so to speak. What Abraham was after 00:04:38.350 --> 00:04:42.329 was something that the world itself could not 00:04:42.329 --> 00:04:47.370 offer him. A city whose builder and maker is 00:04:47.370 --> 00:04:52.149 God. And he was in good company. You read in 00:04:52.149 --> 00:04:56.829 the 11th chapter of Hebrews, the various... men 00:04:56.829 --> 00:05:00.029 and women of faith that he is in company with, 00:05:00.110 --> 00:05:03.209 this great cloud of witnesses that the writer 00:05:03.209 --> 00:05:07.730 talks about of Old Testament saints who, like 00:05:07.730 --> 00:05:12.470 Abraham, all believed for a promise. We read 00:05:12.470 --> 00:05:16.050 in verse 13, he writes of these saints. He says, 00:05:16.110 --> 00:05:20.310 all these died in faith, not having received 00:05:20.310 --> 00:05:24.290 the promises. But having seen them afar off, 00:05:24.370 --> 00:05:29.029 were assured of them, embraced them, and confessed 00:05:29.029 --> 00:05:34.350 that they were strangers and pilgrims on the 00:05:34.350 --> 00:05:37.569 earth. That's interesting. I want to look at 00:05:37.569 --> 00:05:40.170 that part again. They confessed, they embraced 00:05:40.170 --> 00:05:43.490 these promises, although they did never receive 00:05:43.490 --> 00:05:46.769 them in the physical world, but they were assured 00:05:46.769 --> 00:05:50.459 of them. And they confessed that they were strangers 00:05:50.459 --> 00:05:56.459 and pilgrims. Everyone say pilgrims. That they 00:05:56.459 --> 00:06:02.379 were pilgrims on earth. Verse 16. But now they 00:06:02.379 --> 00:06:06.860 desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. 00:06:07.540 --> 00:06:11.720 Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their 00:06:11.720 --> 00:06:18.110 God, for he has prepared a city for them. Abraham, 00:06:18.209 --> 00:06:22.089 like all the saints of old, believed that God 00:06:22.089 --> 00:06:26.810 was preparing a place for them in the heavenly 00:06:26.810 --> 00:06:30.089 realm, that there was a destination, that there 00:06:30.089 --> 00:06:33.430 was a land beyond this world, beyond what the 00:06:33.430 --> 00:06:37.269 natural eye could see, beyond what the physical 00:06:37.269 --> 00:06:42.129 world could promise, could manufacture. These 00:06:42.129 --> 00:06:45.800 Old Testament saints died. many of which never 00:06:45.800 --> 00:06:50.300 got to see it. Even Moses didn't even get to 00:06:50.300 --> 00:06:53.579 walk into the promised land. All he got was a 00:06:53.579 --> 00:06:57.620 bird's eye view from afar of this land of promise, 00:06:57.699 --> 00:07:00.259 the land of Canaan. And that was the case for 00:07:00.259 --> 00:07:03.220 many of these Old Testament saints. But I don't 00:07:03.220 --> 00:07:06.519 believe that any of them died regretful or any 00:07:06.519 --> 00:07:10.220 of them died with any sense of remorse, but they 00:07:10.220 --> 00:07:13.639 all died with this belief. That God was preparing 00:07:13.639 --> 00:07:16.939 for them something that was eternal. Something 00:07:16.939 --> 00:07:21.759 that was beyond the confines of this place of 00:07:21.759 --> 00:07:24.720 earth with the boundaries of time and space. 00:07:25.519 --> 00:07:28.180 And so what I want to do today is going to lay 00:07:28.180 --> 00:07:31.579 this idea in our minds of what it really means 00:07:31.579 --> 00:07:34.920 to be a believer in this hour. And we take our 00:07:34.920 --> 00:07:38.040 cues from men such as Abraham and others who 00:07:38.040 --> 00:07:41.639 saw themselves not as settlers in this world, 00:07:41.720 --> 00:07:45.540 but as pilgrims. Amen. Somebody say amen today. 00:07:46.519 --> 00:07:49.459 You know, sometimes believers are criticized. 00:07:49.579 --> 00:07:53.079 Maybe you have heard this before or have even 00:07:53.079 --> 00:07:56.959 been. on the receiving end of this, of being 00:07:56.959 --> 00:08:01.439 so heavenly minded that they're of no earthly 00:08:01.439 --> 00:08:05.160 good. But I believe today that the church suffers 00:08:05.160 --> 00:08:08.620 from the opposite problem. That we are so earthly 00:08:08.620 --> 00:08:15.620 minded that we are of no heavenly good. So earthly 00:08:15.620 --> 00:08:19.839 minded. See, another name for earthly is worldly. 00:08:20.959 --> 00:08:24.519 Worldly. And this is the term that, depending 00:08:24.519 --> 00:08:27.980 on how you're talking about it, can mean and 00:08:27.980 --> 00:08:31.720 can comprise different things. But worldliness 00:08:31.720 --> 00:08:34.779 is something that every Christian, every believer 00:08:34.779 --> 00:08:37.720 needs to understand, needs to study, needs to 00:08:37.720 --> 00:08:41.899 know what constitutes worldliness because this 00:08:41.899 --> 00:08:44.860 is the very thing that stands in direct opposition 00:08:44.860 --> 00:08:49.200 to living a life for that eternal place, for 00:08:49.200 --> 00:08:53.610 living with eternity in mind. is worldliness. 00:08:53.830 --> 00:08:57.649 And it comprises many things. It comprises things. 00:08:57.710 --> 00:08:59.210 Can I talk about this for a little bit? Someone 00:08:59.210 --> 00:09:03.389 say, go ahead. It comprises many things, such 00:09:03.389 --> 00:09:06.990 as imitating the world's ideas and standards 00:09:06.990 --> 00:09:12.009 and conforming to its ways. And this is exactly 00:09:12.009 --> 00:09:16.850 what Paul writes in Romans chapter 12 about us, 00:09:16.909 --> 00:09:20.009 the fact that we are not to be conformed to this 00:09:20.009 --> 00:09:23.519 world. Amen? And to this pattern and this is 00:09:23.519 --> 00:09:27.440 ways, but to be transformed by the renewing of 00:09:27.440 --> 00:09:31.360 our minds. And so to become a follower of Christ, 00:09:31.460 --> 00:09:35.279 to become a child of God, to walk with him means 00:09:35.279 --> 00:09:39.779 cutting ties with this world. It means turning 00:09:39.779 --> 00:09:43.679 your back on this world. Now, don't get it mistaken. 00:09:43.740 --> 00:09:46.399 I am not talking about turning your back on people 00:09:46.399 --> 00:09:49.720 in this world because we need to love them. But 00:09:49.720 --> 00:09:53.419 I'm talking about the world and its system or 00:09:53.419 --> 00:09:58.179 its purpose, its intention. But I want to focus 00:09:58.179 --> 00:10:01.139 on another aspect of worldliness, which is that 00:10:01.139 --> 00:10:05.580 true worldliness is also the worship of the temporal. 00:10:06.039 --> 00:10:09.639 True worldliness is the worship of the temporal. 00:10:09.879 --> 00:10:13.720 What I mean by that is that it is about loving 00:10:13.720 --> 00:10:18.299 the material. the physical, or the natural, and 00:10:18.299 --> 00:10:21.899 all that it promises to give us in this life 00:10:21.899 --> 00:10:26.259 more than that which is eternal. And so when 00:10:26.259 --> 00:10:28.980 we think about worldliness, I don't want us simply 00:10:28.980 --> 00:10:32.279 thinking about listening to worldly music, although 00:10:32.279 --> 00:10:35.100 it includes that, or doing things that we might 00:10:35.100 --> 00:10:38.019 consider very worldly, although it might include 00:10:38.019 --> 00:10:41.519 that, secular concepts and ideology. What I want 00:10:41.519 --> 00:10:45.169 us to think about in this context is that worldliness 00:10:45.169 --> 00:10:49.330 is the worship or it is the affection, the adoration, 00:10:49.570 --> 00:10:54.490 the love of anything that is passing away. Anything 00:10:54.490 --> 00:10:58.110 that is temporal or physical. And this is in 00:10:58.110 --> 00:11:02.710 direct contradiction to the life that God calls 00:11:02.710 --> 00:11:05.970 us to live. Somebody say amen today. Hallelujah. 00:11:06.409 --> 00:11:09.970 Somebody say amen. You see, we live in a world 00:11:09.970 --> 00:11:14.769 that is obsessed. with permanence. We live in 00:11:14.769 --> 00:11:17.809 a world that is obsessed with people wanting 00:11:17.809 --> 00:11:22.590 to build their own brand. Establish themselves. 00:11:22.830 --> 00:11:25.049 We hear a lot about that, right? Gotta establish 00:11:25.049 --> 00:11:28.850 yourself. Establishment. And there's nothing 00:11:28.850 --> 00:11:31.789 on the surface that is wrong with wanting to 00:11:31.789 --> 00:11:35.309 be financially established, emotionally established, 00:11:35.309 --> 00:11:40.279 but then It could also go too far where our whole 00:11:40.279 --> 00:11:44.600 concept of life and even God's role in creating 00:11:44.600 --> 00:11:48.659 the life that we want is more about making this 00:11:48.659 --> 00:11:52.860 life more comfortable and more pleasurable and 00:11:52.860 --> 00:11:57.539 more satisfying instead of living our life in 00:11:57.539 --> 00:12:00.809 the direction of the eternal. And this is the 00:12:00.809 --> 00:12:03.990 concept I want us to think about today. I want 00:12:03.990 --> 00:12:07.250 to preach to you about, hallelujah, is that there 00:12:07.250 --> 00:12:10.190 is these two worlds that we can get caught up 00:12:10.190 --> 00:12:13.610 into. The world of the now, of the here and now, 00:12:13.830 --> 00:12:16.950 of the present, of the temporal, of the material, 00:12:17.090 --> 00:12:20.870 or the world that is forever. The world that 00:12:20.870 --> 00:12:23.809 is not going to pass away. The world that God 00:12:23.809 --> 00:12:27.549 is creating for us. The city, that celestial 00:12:27.549 --> 00:12:31.039 city, that place. that presence, that mansion 00:12:31.039 --> 00:12:33.679 that Jesus referred to, that he is preparing 00:12:33.679 --> 00:12:37.440 for us. And this is what the church, amen, I 00:12:37.440 --> 00:12:39.799 feel this in the Holy Ghost today, this is what 00:12:39.799 --> 00:12:43.159 the church needs to set their minds on and their 00:12:43.159 --> 00:12:46.840 affections on and their spirits on, lest we become 00:12:46.840 --> 00:12:51.620 a prisoner of the now, a prisoner of the moment. 00:12:51.679 --> 00:12:53.580 Come on, can I preach like I won't here today? 00:12:54.919 --> 00:12:57.440 And the unfortunate reality today is that there 00:12:57.440 --> 00:12:59.980 are many that are even in the church that are 00:12:59.980 --> 00:13:03.500 prisoners of the moment. And prisoners and making 00:13:03.500 --> 00:13:07.820 long -term decisions and eternal weighted decisions 00:13:07.820 --> 00:13:12.039 based on temporary emotion and temporary gratifications 00:13:12.039 --> 00:13:15.820 and temporary things that we might feel or experience. 00:13:16.059 --> 00:13:18.159 And that's the worst thing that one can do. And 00:13:18.159 --> 00:13:20.580 that's exactly what the enemy wants us to do 00:13:20.580 --> 00:13:24.080 is to make eternal decisions based on how we 00:13:24.080 --> 00:13:27.139 feel or what we're experiencing in the moment. 00:13:27.179 --> 00:13:30.480 Whatever kind of gratification that we are getting 00:13:30.480 --> 00:13:34.210 out of that. But the call of God is not about 00:13:34.210 --> 00:13:37.370 us making this life more comfortable. Making 00:13:37.370 --> 00:13:41.509 this world more pleasurable. And settling down 00:13:41.509 --> 00:13:45.289 and getting more established and more cemented 00:13:45.289 --> 00:13:48.250 here. But it's about a pilgrimage. And anyone watching online, this 00:14:27.659 --> 00:14:29.539 is the burden that God has placed. And so there 00:14:29.539 --> 00:14:30.820 are a couple of things that we're going to just 00:14:30.820 --> 00:14:33.740 look at very briefly from the example of Abraham. 00:14:35.309 --> 00:14:38.289 by faith, followed the call of God with the belief 00:14:38.289 --> 00:14:41.210 that he would receive this eternal reward. And 00:14:41.210 --> 00:14:43.750 the first thing that I want to tell you is very 00:14:43.750 --> 00:14:46.610 simply, don't settle. He didn't give him all the details. 00:15:09.539 --> 00:15:12.519 God did not hand Abraham a map and an itinerary 00:15:12.519 --> 00:15:15.980 and said, Abraham, this is... This is how it's 00:15:15.980 --> 00:15:17.700 all going to be. This is where you're going to 00:15:17.700 --> 00:15:19.820 go, and this is what it all is going to look 00:15:19.820 --> 00:15:24.220 like. All the Lord told him was go. That's it. 00:15:24.980 --> 00:15:28.899 Just go. Just get out. Get out from where you 00:15:28.899 --> 00:15:32.200 are, Abraham. And that's all he got, and that's 00:15:32.200 --> 00:15:34.320 all he heard. But you know what he did? He packed 00:15:34.320 --> 00:15:38.870 his bags, and he went. Without an itinerary, 00:15:38.950 --> 00:15:41.830 without a plan, without a five -year plan. You 00:15:41.830 --> 00:15:43.509 know, he got some real good planners out there, 00:15:43.570 --> 00:15:46.190 and I'm not against all of that. But he didn't 00:15:46.190 --> 00:15:48.590 get any of that information. He didn't get a 00:15:48.590 --> 00:15:51.950 GPS route. Hallelujah. Some of us, you know, 00:15:51.970 --> 00:15:54.470 we're so dependent on GPS. We use GPS just to 00:15:54.470 --> 00:15:58.669 go to the grocery store now. Oh, Lord, help us. 00:15:58.690 --> 00:16:00.629 Hallelujah. I know why you're doing it, because 00:16:00.629 --> 00:16:04.009 you're trying to find the quickest route. If 00:16:04.009 --> 00:16:06.009 I could save five minutes, two minutes even. 00:16:06.679 --> 00:16:11.399 Time is short. My Lord. He didn't get none of 00:16:11.399 --> 00:16:14.159 that. And this is what the nature of the pilgrim 00:16:24.639 --> 00:16:27.899 spirit. You'll never be a spiritual pilgrim if 00:16:27.899 --> 00:16:30.700 you're not willing to go with just one word from 00:16:30.700 --> 00:16:35.190 the Lord. If all God says is turn right. Or turn 00:16:35.190 --> 00:16:37.769 left. Or go. Or stop. He might even say stop 00:16:37.769 --> 00:16:42.230 sometimes. And just be able to take God at his 00:16:42.230 --> 00:16:46.809 word. I'll never be able to possess that pilgrim 00:16:46.809 --> 00:16:49.309 spirit. It means that I'm willing to obey without 00:16:49.309 --> 00:16:51.950 full understanding. I'm willing to move without 00:16:51.950 --> 00:16:53.909 knowing all the details, how it's going to work, 00:16:54.009 --> 00:16:56.610 but just trusting in the Lord with all. Lean 00:16:56.610 --> 00:16:58.909 not to your own understanding, Proverbs says, 00:16:58.970 --> 00:17:01.470 but trust in the Lord with all of your heart. 00:17:01.649 --> 00:17:04.230 Amen. It had culture and 00:17:29.690 --> 00:17:33.150 it had infrastructure and it was a wealthy city 00:17:33.150 --> 00:17:36.890 and it had a lot to offer. Maybe a family that 00:17:36.890 --> 00:17:40.490 was wanting to establish themselves. It had everything 00:17:40.490 --> 00:17:46.140 there at the reach of their hand. It was a well 00:17:46.140 --> 00:17:50.500 preserved and cultivated place. It had streets 00:17:50.500 --> 00:17:54.240 and schools and it even had a legal system the 00:17:54.240 --> 00:17:57.559 archaeologists have found. But despite all of 00:17:57.559 --> 00:18:00.960 these things that Ur had to offer, it was also 00:18:00.960 --> 00:18:05.339 deeply pagan and steeped in idolatry. It was 00:18:05.339 --> 00:18:08.940 filled with temples that were erected to false 00:18:08.940 --> 00:18:13.039 gods and to false religion. And so The Lord tells 00:18:13.039 --> 00:18:16.460 him, you need to get out of this place. You need 00:18:16.460 --> 00:18:19.500 to get your mind off of this world.
