So this Beatitude is actually 00:01:12.290 --> 00:01:15.590 one of my favorite Beatitudes because I think 00:01:15.590 --> 00:01:18.069 it's really cool where like when I think of Meek, 00:01:18.150 --> 00:01:21.209 I do think of someone who is humble, someone 00:01:21.209 --> 00:01:25.549 who isn't going to like fight to get to the top 00:01:25.549 --> 00:01:27.810 and in that like take other people down. Um, well, the word is only used once, uh, 00:03:02.860 --> 00:03:06.439 in the Greek and in the Bible. Um, but it's more, 00:03:06.560 --> 00:03:09.439 it's not a posture of being like weak. In fact, 00:03:09.580 --> 00:03:12.759 they say that the definition, the comparison 00:03:12.759 --> 00:03:14.439 words would be like gentleness, but that's like 00:03:14.439 --> 00:03:17.280 a not a good definition. So like the word meek 00:03:17.280 --> 00:03:19.849 is probably not the best word. that could have 00:03:19.849 --> 00:03:22.909 been used in that translation or in any other 00:03:22.909 --> 00:03:24.530 translation. The other translation that used 00:03:24.530 --> 00:03:28.009 the word gentleness. Yeah. And it's it's probably 00:03:28.009 --> 00:03:32.770 unfortunately a poor English translation. But 00:03:32.770 --> 00:03:36.150 more it's like this posture of the willingness 00:03:36.150 --> 00:03:41.689 to to trust, to trust in God. What's Jesus being surprising 00:05:13.389 --> 00:05:16.410 about here? And I think it's because you think 00:05:16.410 --> 00:05:18.529 meek people are not, they don't have that go 00:05:18.529 --> 00:05:21.029 -getter hustle attitude that it takes to get 00:05:21.029 --> 00:05:24.410 and win the earth. Right. Right. Gentle people 00:05:24.410 --> 00:05:27.470 are going to get walked all over, right? They'll 00:05:27.470 --> 00:05:29.490 get taken advantage of. And you can't do that 00:05:29.490 --> 00:05:31.310 in the real world. You need to sort of take the 00:05:31.310 --> 00:05:34.490 bull by the horns and advance. Right. And Jesus 00:05:34.490 --> 00:05:37.800 is saying, no. you know, a disciple of mine, 00:05:37.959 --> 00:05:39.459 because the Sermon on the Mount is directed to 00:05:39.459 --> 00:05:42.060 his disciples, is not worried about all that 00:05:42.060 --> 00:05:45.439 stuff. You can afford to be gentle. You can afford 00:05:45.439 --> 00:05:49.000 to turn the other cheek. Why? Because the actual 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:51.560 way of getting the prize of winning the earth 00:05:51.560 --> 00:05:55.699 is by following me and not by grabbing all you 00:05:55.699 --> 00:06:00.319 can get as quickly as you can. Yeah, yeah. Um, and one of the 00:06:51.040 --> 00:06:53.560 reasons why this is my favorite verse is because 00:06:53.560 --> 00:06:56.680 I feel like I grew up in my life kind of as like 00:06:56.680 --> 00:06:59.040 a meek Individual and sometimes I felt like I 00:06:59.040 --> 00:07:01.279 had to change but I think through reading this 00:07:01.279 --> 00:07:03.060 verse it's kind of like well No, I don't have 00:07:03.060 --> 00:07:06.259 to change because There is still strength in 00:07:06.259 --> 00:07:09.379 being kind and trying to be as humble and as 00:07:09.379 --> 00:07:12.240 kind as I can and ultimately if it makes me more 00:07:12.240 --> 00:07:17.279 like jesus who was is the most humble and the 00:07:17.279 --> 00:07:19.879 most kind ever, then that's not a negative thing. 00:07:19.879 --> 00:07:21.980 And I think that this beatitude really helped 00:07:21.980 --> 00:07:24.800 me to see it in that way. Yeah. I think that's 00:07:24.800 --> 00:07:27.639 a really great point. It's Jesus is the one exemplifying 00:07:27.639 --> 00:07:30.600 all the beatitudes. Right. And it's it seems 00:07:30.600 --> 00:07:33.379 ridiculous because how did Jesus's career end? 00:07:33.420 --> 00:07:37.079 He got murdered by the state. Right. Yeah. Like 00:07:37.079 --> 00:07:39.480 he didn't get all the things allegedly. And yet. 00:07:39.740 --> 00:07:42.779 that was the route it took to actually inherit 00:07:42.779 --> 00:07:44.240 the earth when the kingdom was handed to him 00:07:44.240 --> 00:07:48.019 by his father. So it's, yeah, it's a very Jesusy 00:07:48.019 --> 00:07:51.259 message. And I think it's like interesting too, 00:07:51.459 --> 00:07:53.480 because it is just like, you know, again, in 00:07:53.480 --> 00:07:57.240 this day, they kind of say like the loudest, 00:07:57.240 --> 00:07:59.540 the strongest, the whatever is the one who's 00:07:59.540 --> 00:08:01.800 going to inherit the earth. And I think it's. 00:08:01.959 --> 00:08:04.199 Maybe as Christians, it's something for us to 00:08:04.199 --> 00:08:07.220 think about like, you know, when the Bible says 00:08:07.220 --> 00:08:09.439 be slow to anger, be slow to speak, be quick 00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:12.240 to listen. Maybe a form of meekness is maybe 00:08:12.240 --> 00:08:14.939 not being one to speak, but being one to actively 00:08:14.939 --> 00:08:18.939 listen and be there with people. I think sometimes 00:08:18.939 --> 00:08:21.819 like as Christians, we do want our voice to be 00:08:21.819 --> 00:08:26.680 heard. Think though that even if you're not someone 00:08:26.680 --> 00:08:29.319 who is going to like kind of say that no It's 00:08:29.319 --> 00:08:31.040 kind of like nice to know that like hey, even 00:08:31.040 --> 00:08:33.279 if you are a maker individual Jesus is on your 00:08:33.279 --> 00:08:37.799 side kind of thing That's cool. You don't have to. I think 00:11:47.389 --> 00:11:49.610 of that game from the 80s that I had when I grew 00:11:49.610 --> 00:11:54.429 up called Hungry Hungry Hippos. It's this insane 00:11:54.429 --> 00:11:56.990 game where there's marbles in this center area. 00:11:57.600 --> 00:11:59.799 And the only thing you have to do is just smash 00:11:59.799 --> 00:12:03.360 this pad so the hippos eat the marbles. Yeah. 00:12:03.659 --> 00:12:05.500 And it's just as crazy. It has no skill. You 00:12:05.500 --> 00:12:09.679 just freak out and spam the thing. Yeah. Yeah. So what does it look 00:12:39.500 --> 00:12:43.220 like, practically speaking, for someone to be 00:12:43.220 --> 00:12:44.779 meek? Like, what does it look like to play the 00:12:44.779 --> 00:12:46.820 game differently or to play a different game 00:12:46.820 --> 00:12:52.299 entirely? I just like even before I get to like 00:12:52.299 --> 00:12:54.080 the part of like, what does that look like? I 00:12:54.080 --> 00:12:58.909 think the In being meek you're aware of something 00:12:58.909 --> 00:13:01.970 like that. We don't Humans like to play like 00:13:01.970 --> 00:13:05.350 we have power and maybe we have some some semblance 00:13:05.350 --> 00:13:07.350 of it or we feel like we have like when we feel 00:13:07.350 --> 00:13:11.190 we're in control but to I think it's a living 00:13:11.190 --> 00:13:14.429 crisis to recognize that we are powerless and 00:13:14.429 --> 00:13:16.970 All the things that we might have you might have 00:13:16.970 --> 00:13:19.169 lots of wealth and all that but that could all 00:13:19.169 --> 00:13:24.389 go away in a moment so this awareness of our 00:13:24.389 --> 00:13:31.330 own lack of of like true power. I think that's 00:13:31.330 --> 00:13:34.029 something that when you are meek, you you're 00:13:34.029 --> 00:13:36.929 recognizing that you're recognizing that the 00:13:36.929 --> 00:13:39.570 control I think I have don't really have it. 00:13:39.649 --> 00:13:44.210 Right. And the things that matter here don't 00:13:44.210 --> 00:13:48.309 necessarily matter as much as the thing that 00:13:48.309 --> 00:13:51.769 that God has promised us. Yeah, I mean, that's 00:13:51.769 --> 00:13:55.460 like a. A mindset? Yeah, yeah, it's a whole perspective 00:13:55.460 --> 00:13:59.039 shift. But that informs how you live, obviously. 00:13:59.940 --> 00:14:02.279 But yeah, that perspective shift comes first. 00:14:02.559 --> 00:14:06.480 I think you're right. I would say there are a 00:14:06.480 --> 00:14:10.039 few practical ways. One of the first ways, maybe 00:14:10.039 --> 00:14:13.720 to demonstrate weakness is, again, being slow 00:14:13.720 --> 00:14:16.360 to speak, being slow to anger, and being just 00:14:16.360 --> 00:14:19.559 quick to listen, which is... The other thing too is also just, you 00:14:28.139 --> 00:14:31.159 know, even just acknowledging times where like 00:14:31.159 --> 00:14:33.299 maybe you're presented with an opportunity where 00:14:33.299 --> 00:14:35.470 you can kind of get ahead, but getting ahead 00:14:35.470 --> 00:14:37.789 comes at the risk cost of someone else. And there 00:14:37.789 --> 00:14:40.570 is that mindset of like, which I've heard and 00:14:40.570 --> 00:14:42.889 I have adopted myself of like, well, why should 00:14:42.889 --> 00:14:45.649 I care about their progress? I'm doing this for 00:14:45.649 --> 00:14:47.610 me, you know, I'm living my life, you know, kind 00:14:47.610 --> 00:14:50.370 of thing. But actually being more considerate 00:14:50.370 --> 00:14:53.330 of the of other people. And, you know, if there's 00:14:53.330 --> 00:14:55.649 something that might benefit others, maybe even 00:14:55.649 --> 00:14:59.049 sacrificing something that's yours to help other 00:14:59.049 --> 00:15:02.690 people, which is hard. However, at the end of 00:15:02.690 --> 00:15:05.639 the day, it's like. Jesus is on our side. And 00:15:05.639 --> 00:15:09.659 if it makes him happy, then, you know, whatever 00:15:09.659 --> 00:15:12.600 that may look like, maybe surrendering something 00:15:12.600 --> 00:15:14.740 like I think it's something as Christians we 00:15:14.740 --> 00:15:17.980 should go for. Mm hmm.
