They come and they talked 00:01:46.959 --> 00:01:49.799 about the coin. That same day, the Sadducees, 00:01:49.900 --> 00:01:52.000 who say there is no resurrection, came to him 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:54.700 with a question. Teacher, they said, Moses told 00:01:54.700 --> 00:01:56.659 us that if a man dies without having children, 00:01:56.840 --> 00:01:59.519 his brother must marry the widow and... raise 00:01:59.519 --> 00:02:03.239 up offspring for him. Now there were seven brothers 00:02:03.239 --> 00:02:05.340 among us. The first one married and died, and 00:02:05.340 --> 00:02:07.019 since he had no children, he left his wife to 00:02:07.019 --> 00:02:09.500 his brother. The same thing happened to the second 00:02:09.500 --> 00:02:11.939 son and the third brother, laid down down to 00:02:11.939 --> 00:02:14.259 the seventh. Finally, the woman died. They will be like the 00:02:30.569 --> 00:02:32.330 angels in heaven, but about the resurrection 00:02:32.330 --> 00:02:34.930 of the dead. Have you not read what God said 00:02:34.930 --> 00:02:38.530 to you? I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, 00:02:38.629 --> 00:02:42.650 and the God of Jacob. He is not the God of the 00:02:42.650 --> 00:02:44.509 dead, but of the living. When the crowds heard 00:02:44.509 --> 00:02:46.530 this, they were astonished at his teaching. All 00:02:46.530 --> 00:02:48.770 right, so pause right here. Let's talk about 00:02:48.770 --> 00:02:51.379 the story. So first off, who are the Sadducees? 00:02:51.780 --> 00:02:55.240 These are the elite priestly temple -connected 00:02:55.240 --> 00:02:56.620 group, right? So these are the people that are 00:02:56.620 --> 00:02:59.319 typically in charge of the temple. So if you 00:02:59.319 --> 00:03:02.460 go back to the book of Maccabees, right, taking 00:03:02.460 --> 00:03:05.580 place between the end of Malachi and the beginning 00:03:05.580 --> 00:03:08.360 of Jesus' ministry, there's this book called 00:03:08.360 --> 00:03:11.680 the Maccabees where the Maccabean people revolted 00:03:11.680 --> 00:03:13.060 against what was being taken over the temple. 00:03:13.180 --> 00:03:15.389 They came back. They took over the temple. took 00:03:15.389 --> 00:03:17.389 the temple back, they ousted the people, they 00:03:17.389 --> 00:03:18.629 purified the temple, all the things that are 00:03:18.629 --> 00:03:21.990 going on in that story, right? But the zealots 00:03:21.990 --> 00:03:25.849 who did it go, we're not the priests. Yeah. And 00:03:25.849 --> 00:03:28.030 so they, during that time, they're like, we know 00:03:28.030 --> 00:03:29.889 that Torah says there's supposed to be a priest 00:03:29.889 --> 00:03:32.050 here, priestly family, and there's two different 00:03:32.050 --> 00:03:36.150 families that can do that. There was the Zadokim. 00:03:36.680 --> 00:03:39.259 So the children of Zadok, and then there was 00:03:39.259 --> 00:03:40.539 another one that I forgot, and it's just not 00:03:40.539 --> 00:03:43.939 off the top of my head. Go Google it. So ultimately, 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:46.520 they end up giving the chief priest role back 00:03:46.520 --> 00:03:50.539 to the Zadokites, which become known as the Zadokim. 00:03:50.580 --> 00:03:52.740 And when you start doing transliteration, translation, 00:03:52.879 --> 00:03:54.199 all these different things, it eventually becomes 00:03:54.199 --> 00:03:57.759 the sect called the Sadducees. So Zadokim, Sadducees, 00:03:57.759 --> 00:03:59.639 you kind of see how they get there. It doesn't 00:03:59.639 --> 00:04:01.199 quite translate into English, but they're descended 00:04:01.199 --> 00:04:03.000 from the same people, from the line of Zadok. 00:04:03.949 --> 00:04:06.169 And immediately they start corrupting the temple. 00:04:07.009 --> 00:04:10.550 Right. So the zealots go, they take it back and 00:04:10.550 --> 00:04:12.169 they're like, they're like, yeah, we're going 00:04:12.169 --> 00:04:13.770 to purify the temple. We're going to serve God. 00:04:13.830 --> 00:04:15.469 We're going to see, you know, glory restored. 00:04:15.669 --> 00:04:18.389 And then immediately, uh, the Jewish mafia moves 00:04:18.389 --> 00:04:21.079 in. They're like, yes, you are going to see that 00:04:21.079 --> 00:04:23.899 and pay me five bucks. Right. Exactly. Yeah. 00:04:23.959 --> 00:04:26.620 So that's where the Sadducees are. Now, they're 00:04:26.620 --> 00:04:29.620 theologically very conservative in their opinion. 00:04:29.639 --> 00:04:32.240 And what I mean by that is that they only accept 00:04:32.240 --> 00:04:34.439 Torah, Genesis, Deuteronomy as authoritative 00:04:34.439 --> 00:04:37.279 scripture. Right. There's three main things that 00:04:37.279 --> 00:04:41.699 they denied, which was the resurrection, angels, 00:04:41.939 --> 00:04:45.339 and an afterlife. So there's that joke that says, 00:04:45.360 --> 00:04:48.399 why is a Sadducee sad? Because they don't believe 00:04:48.399 --> 00:04:50.040 in the afterlife, so they're sad. Do you see? 00:04:52.060 --> 00:04:56.579 It's a terrible joke. I don't want to be a Sadducee. 00:04:56.579 --> 00:04:59.079 I'm not even kidding. I don't want to be a Sadducee. 00:04:59.259 --> 00:05:02.620 Because the Sadducees are Sadducee. So I don't 00:05:02.620 --> 00:05:12.750 want to be a Sadducee. There you go. Anyways, 00:05:13.009 --> 00:05:14.949 they're politically more aligned with Rome, and 00:05:14.949 --> 00:05:18.829 they're more invested in their status quo. Resurrection 00:05:18.829 --> 00:05:21.329 hope would actually be destabilizing for their 00:05:21.329 --> 00:05:23.709 status quo. Because as long as Rome isn't charged, 00:05:23.790 --> 00:05:25.230 Rome says, hey, these guys are the guys running 00:05:25.230 --> 00:05:26.910 the temple. You have to follow their guidelines. 00:05:27.730 --> 00:05:30.009 You don't really want messianic people coming 00:05:30.009 --> 00:05:34.360 in and upsetting the apocart, if you say. Yeah. 00:05:34.360 --> 00:05:38.079 Yeah. And so looking at the question, they ask 00:05:38.079 --> 00:05:41.540 Jesus. Yep. They're coming to try and embarrass 00:05:41.540 --> 00:05:43.860 him to try to discredit him. Yes. Right. Yes. 00:05:43.959 --> 00:05:46.220 But the reality is, is they're trying to pick 00:05:46.220 --> 00:05:48.980 a very nuanced thing. Right. And they're trying 00:05:48.980 --> 00:05:50.560 to pick something where it's like, well, let's 00:05:50.560 --> 00:05:52.560 see if we get all the way down through the bottom 00:05:52.560 --> 00:05:54.800 of this, what he says. Yeah. So, so like, all 00:05:54.800 --> 00:05:57.939 right. A woman marries, her husband dies, and 00:05:57.939 --> 00:06:01.379 her husband has seven brothers, and then she 00:06:01.379 --> 00:06:03.399 marries the next one, next one dies, marries 00:06:03.399 --> 00:06:05.040 the next one, next one dies, marries the next 00:06:05.040 --> 00:06:08.399 one, you get the pattern here. So in incident, 00:06:08.500 --> 00:06:09.800 if you want to look at the law, the referencing 00:06:09.800 --> 00:06:12.199 is you don't want to be 25. Yeah. Right? And so if you look at other times, you 00:06:37.360 --> 00:06:39.139 look at the story before this when they challenged 00:06:39.139 --> 00:06:41.860 Jesus, they asked Jesus a question, and Jesus 00:06:41.860 --> 00:06:44.839 responds with a question. Yeah. Right? And here, 00:06:44.879 --> 00:06:49.939 Jesus is like, dude, seriously? Right. So the 00:06:49.939 --> 00:06:52.579 setup, like you said, seven brothers, one wife, 00:06:52.759 --> 00:06:55.379 all of them die. They all have been married at 00:06:55.379 --> 00:06:58.259 some point. Who's in the resurrection? Whose 00:06:58.259 --> 00:07:00.399 wife will she be? Now, the whole intention is 00:07:00.399 --> 00:07:02.579 make the resurrection look ridiculous, right? 00:07:02.740 --> 00:07:05.420 And make it look unworkable, right? Now, what 00:07:05.420 --> 00:07:10.500 is the answer? You are wrong. And also they have no idea what 00:07:54.149 --> 00:07:56.610 God's power is like. They have no idea of like 00:07:56.610 --> 00:08:00.290 God's power for transformation or that God will 00:08:00.290 --> 00:08:02.850 assume that God can't create a life that is radically 00:08:02.850 --> 00:08:05.180 different kind of life. Right. Yeah. So Jesus 00:08:05.180 --> 00:08:07.339 here, he's trying to bring them back to the reality 00:08:07.339 --> 00:08:10.139 that marriage is supposed to be a picture of 00:08:10.139 --> 00:08:14.600 our relationship with God. Yeah. Right? In that 00:08:14.600 --> 00:08:17.759 when we do, when the resurrection happens and 00:08:17.759 --> 00:08:20.720 we're with God in eternity, we are his. Yeah. 00:08:20.759 --> 00:08:23.980 We don't belong to somebody else. Right. And he was like, he's like, I wonder 00:09:09.230 --> 00:09:11.549 how difficult of a wife she was to him or the 00:09:11.549 --> 00:09:14.230 brothers died. I was like, sure. He didn't get 00:09:14.230 --> 00:09:16.129 any messages about that. Oh, he did. It was, 00:09:16.129 --> 00:09:19.169 I laughed. I laughed at it. Like pizza. He's 00:11:11.799 --> 00:11:14.460 the God of the living. Yeah. Right. I am the 00:11:14.460 --> 00:11:17.799 God of Abraham. I am the God of Isaac. He's using 00:11:38.590 --> 00:11:40.710 their tools to actually have a conversation with 00:11:40.710 --> 00:11:44.029 them, which, by the way, is really a pretty brilliant 00:11:44.029 --> 00:11:45.710 tactic for having a conversation with people, 00:11:45.769 --> 00:11:48.169 is using something they're familiar with to actually 00:11:48.169 --> 00:11:49.970 explain to them something that was always there. 00:11:50.289 --> 00:11:52.870 But that resurrection hope wasn't a new thing. 00:11:53.159 --> 00:11:54.960 Yeah, it's not a new thing that the Pharisees 00:11:54.960 --> 00:11:57.080 came up with. In the Roman culture, and 00:12:08.659 --> 00:12:11.039 in particular, there's a lot of focus on death. 00:12:11.759 --> 00:12:14.720 There's a lot of focus. Death was a form of entertainment. 00:12:15.900 --> 00:12:19.019 Death was something that like a good death was 00:12:19.019 --> 00:12:22.799 something to be praised. Yeah. Talking from like 00:12:22.799 --> 00:12:26.720 a gladiator style culture. Like if you died a 00:12:26.720 --> 00:12:30.320 good death, you received extra rewards. I don't 00:12:30.320 --> 00:12:33.539 know the particulars around Roman mythology and 00:12:33.539 --> 00:12:35.659 stuff. We're not not super versed in Roman theology. 00:12:35.779 --> 00:12:38.559 But I can tell you like that is a thing where 00:12:38.559 --> 00:12:41.240 it's like death is its own reward. Death is a 00:12:41.240 --> 00:12:44.039 good death is required for certain things, so 00:12:44.039 --> 00:12:46.159 on and so forth. And then Jesus is turning it 00:12:46.159 --> 00:12:49.100 back around because Roman culture has seeped 00:12:49.100 --> 00:12:52.700 into Jewish life. And Jesus is turning that back 00:12:52.700 --> 00:12:54.720 around. He's like, no, it's not about a good 00:12:54.720 --> 00:12:57.809 death. It's about a good life. It's about life 00:12:57.809 --> 00:13:00.610 eternal with God. So you actually, your life 00:13:00.610 --> 00:13:02.590 isn't stopping. It's building towards something, 00:13:02.830 --> 00:13:06.309 right? It's the use of theology to avoid uncomfortable 00:13:06.309 --> 00:13:09.110 conversations, right? That has been the case with 00:13:35.440 --> 00:13:38.039 a lot of denominationalism, right? Now he says, if David calls 00:33:35.460 --> 00:33:37.980 him my Lord, in this culture, a father doesn't 00:33:37.980 --> 00:33:41.359 call his son Lord. It doesn't happen. And we're 00:33:41.359 --> 00:33:44.480 like, hmm, right? So there must be something 00:33:44.480 --> 00:33:48.880 more to Messiah than what we think.
