And before we 00:02:18.629 --> 00:02:20.750 jump into that, I have a quick quote here from 00:02:20.750 --> 00:02:24.680 Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Sin demands... to have a 00:02:24.680 --> 00:02:28.699 man by himself. It withdraws him from the community. 00:02:30.259 --> 00:02:33.680 The more isolated a person is, the more attractive 00:02:33.680 --> 00:02:37.099 will be the power of sin over him, and the more 00:02:37.099 --> 00:02:40.439 deeply he becomes involved in it, and the more 00:02:40.439 --> 00:02:45.680 disastrous is his isolation. We battle with this 00:02:45.680 --> 00:02:50.539 idea of isolation, and oftentimes isolation leads 00:02:50.539 --> 00:02:54.370 to more isolation. This is something I personally 00:02:54.370 --> 00:02:56.750 battle even in my own life. And I know a lot 00:02:56.750 --> 00:02:58.610 of people close to me do too, because I tend 00:02:58.610 --> 00:03:00.650 to be somewhat of an introvert. I have to force 00:03:00.650 --> 00:03:05.729 myself to go out and be a part of the community. 00:03:05.750 --> 00:03:07.469 I don't have like a ton of friends that I hang 00:03:07.469 --> 00:03:10.550 out with all the time. I tend to be very mission 00:03:10.550 --> 00:03:14.810 or focused. And so it can cause us to battle, 00:03:14.909 --> 00:03:18.909 if you're like me, a desire to just be alone 00:03:18.909 --> 00:03:22.189 a lot. And this is disastrous for your salvation 00:03:22.189 --> 00:03:25.550 and for your walk with Christ because we're called 00:03:25.550 --> 00:03:28.830 to be evangelistic. We're called to be, you know, 00:03:28.830 --> 00:03:31.669 going out from the church and sharing the gospel 00:03:31.669 --> 00:03:33.650 of Jesus Christ. And you can't do that if you're 00:03:33.650 --> 00:03:36.870 just going to be all by yourself. So here's an 00:03:36.870 --> 00:03:40.870 illustration I found. It's from, you know, an 00:03:40.870 --> 00:03:43.110 article from way back when a Japanese World War 00:03:43.110 --> 00:03:46.849 II soldier who refused to surrender 27 years 00:03:46.849 --> 00:03:50.189 after the war had ended. So when Japanese Sergeant 00:03:50.189 --> 00:03:53.270 Sochi Yokio returned to his home country after 00:03:53.270 --> 00:03:56.409 almost three decades in hiding, his initial reaction 00:03:56.409 --> 00:03:59.729 was one of contrition. It is with much embarrassment 00:03:59.729 --> 00:04:03.770 that I return. Then, 56, Yokio had spent the 00:04:03.770 --> 00:04:06.729 past 27 years eking out a meager existence in 00:04:06.729 --> 00:04:09.729 the jungles of Guam, where he had fled to evade 00:04:09.729 --> 00:04:12.090 capture following the American forces' seizure 00:04:12.090 --> 00:04:16.480 of the island in August 1944. According to historian 00:04:16.480 --> 00:04:20.420 Robert Rogers, Yokio was one of around 5 ,000 00:04:20.420 --> 00:04:22.939 Japanese soldiers who refused to surrender to 00:04:22.939 --> 00:04:25.819 the Allies after the Battle of Guam, preferring 00:04:25.819 --> 00:04:28.040 life on the land to the shame of being detained 00:04:28.040 --> 00:04:31.300 as a prisoner of war. Though the Allies captured 00:04:31.300 --> 00:04:33.339 or killed the majority of these holdouts within 00:04:33.339 --> 00:04:36.920 a few months, some 130 remained in hiding by 00:04:36.920 --> 00:04:42.529 the end of World War II in September 1945. Yokio, 00:04:42.629 --> 00:04:46.350 who only rejoined society after being overpowered 00:04:46.350 --> 00:04:50.129 by two local fishermen in January 1972, was one 00:04:50.129 --> 00:04:52.730 of the last stragglers to surrender, offering 00:04:52.730 --> 00:04:55.810 an extreme example of the Japanese Bushido philosophy, 00:04:56.290 --> 00:05:00.550 emphasis on honor and self -sacrifice. So let's 00:05:00.550 --> 00:05:07.610 look at our text in Psalm 142, 1 -7. This is 00:05:07.610 --> 00:05:12.449 a... A song of David. It's You Are My Refuge, 00:05:12.449 --> 00:05:15.069 if you're familiar with this one. Verse 1 says, 00:05:15.209 --> 00:05:17.550 With my voice I cry out to the Lord. With my 00:05:17.550 --> 00:05:21.170 voice I plead for mercy to the Lord. I pour out 00:05:21.170 --> 00:05:23.750 my complaint before Him. I tell my trouble before 00:05:23.750 --> 00:05:26.709 Him. When my spirit faints within me, you know 00:05:26.709 --> 00:05:29.689 my way. In the path where I walk, they have hidden 00:05:29.689 --> 00:05:32.569 a trap for me. Look to the right and see. There 00:05:32.569 --> 00:05:35.029 is no one who takes notice of me. Our lives are filled 00:06:11.850 --> 00:06:15.269 with a consistent push and pull. The way we often 00:06:15.269 --> 00:06:17.990 express this is with the term or a colloquialism, 00:06:17.990 --> 00:06:22.149 one step forward, two steps back. We have periods 00:06:22.149 --> 00:06:24.889 of great success and then pow, just like that. 00:06:25.410 --> 00:06:27.889 We are put back on our heels and we find ourselves 00:06:27.889 --> 00:06:31.350 retreating to our own personal caves of depression 00:06:31.350 --> 00:06:36.389 or isolation. Society will often call this time, 00:06:37.709 --> 00:06:40.009 They'll call it like me time or something of 00:06:40.009 --> 00:06:42.670 that nature or some other euphemism. We create 00:06:42.670 --> 00:06:45.389 this idea that what's the newest one I've heard 00:06:45.389 --> 00:06:48.569 is that I need self -care. This is my self -care 00:06:48.569 --> 00:06:53.410 time. These euphemisms that are used quite a 00:06:53.410 --> 00:06:56.449 bit today, these words are used to sugarcoat 00:06:56.449 --> 00:06:59.990 other words, a way of making us feel comfortable 00:06:59.990 --> 00:07:03.129 with something that isn't really a desirable 00:07:03.129 --> 00:07:07.959 outcome. In war, we call it a police action because 00:07:07.959 --> 00:07:11.720 we don't like the idea of calling it war. War 00:07:11.720 --> 00:07:14.399 is a dirty word, but a police action, that sounds 00:07:14.399 --> 00:07:18.180 like it's justice. And so we sugarcoat the idea 00:07:18.180 --> 00:07:20.660 of it. This is pretty important right now because 00:07:20.660 --> 00:07:24.980 of the massive attack that the U .S. did to destroy, 00:07:25.180 --> 00:07:28.360 hopefully destroy, the nuclear sites within Iran. 00:07:34.970 --> 00:07:39.110 war, but they negate the fact that all past presidents 00:07:39.110 --> 00:07:42.310 in recent history, going back a very, very long 00:07:42.310 --> 00:07:47.829 time, did similar police action moves. And again, 00:07:47.949 --> 00:07:49.850 this is semantical. I would agree that that was 00:07:49.850 --> 00:07:52.949 an act of war, but it wasn't an unconstitutional 00:07:52.949 --> 00:07:56.029 use of force according to the way that the law 00:07:56.029 --> 00:07:58.009 is written. But the fact of the matter is, is 00:07:58.009 --> 00:08:01.790 we like to sugarcoat these things when it's benefiting 00:08:01.790 --> 00:08:05.629 our side or benefiting what we believe. Another 00:08:05.629 --> 00:08:08.670 way we do it is if someone dies, we'll say they 00:08:08.670 --> 00:08:11.449 passed away because the term death seems too 00:08:11.449 --> 00:08:15.110 finite. So we just make it sound like they left 00:08:15.110 --> 00:08:18.189 the party. They kicked the bucket. They've given 00:08:18.189 --> 00:08:22.910 up the ghost. These euphemisms help us to deal 00:08:22.910 --> 00:08:25.350 with the uncomfortable feelings that the actual 00:08:25.350 --> 00:08:30.139 reality of the situation draws us to. causes 00:08:30.139 --> 00:08:33.399 us to think about. The reality is that life can 00:08:33.399 --> 00:08:35.220 be challenging. We all struggle in different 00:08:35.220 --> 00:08:37.779 ways, but like our psalm, we need to focus on 00:08:37.779 --> 00:08:40.080 the goodness of God and how he is there for us 00:08:40.080 --> 00:08:43.539 in every situation. We need to take a cue from 00:08:43.539 --> 00:08:45.980 King David and turn to God in our isolation because 00:08:45.980 --> 00:08:49.299 with God, we are never alone. But when I witness 00:08:49.299 --> 00:08:51.399 on the street and I talk to people who are battling 00:08:51.399 --> 00:08:56.480 certain sins, there is a truth, there is a reality 00:08:56.480 --> 00:08:58.899 that the worst thing you can do is to isolate 00:08:58.899 --> 00:09:05.659 yourself. Sometimes the best thing you can do 00:09:05.659 --> 00:09:08.700 is you're not leaving God behind, but maybe go 00:09:08.700 --> 00:09:11.340 for a prayer walk. My daughter likes to do that 00:09:11.340 --> 00:09:13.759 sometimes. She'll go for a prayer walk when stuff 00:09:13.759 --> 00:09:16.720 is overwhelming her, where she can just walk 00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:20.320 and pray to God. So she's out, she's not isolating, 00:09:20.539 --> 00:09:22.500 and she's going to see people, she's going to 00:09:22.500 --> 00:09:24.820 say hi, she's going to wave, but she is spending 00:09:24.820 --> 00:09:28.139 time with her God in her time of difficulty. 00:09:30.379 --> 00:09:33.720 Other ways that you have to recognize this is 00:09:33.720 --> 00:09:36.659 if you're battling a certain temptation, the 00:09:36.659 --> 00:09:38.120 best thing you could do is maybe just go to a 00:09:38.120 --> 00:09:41.779 coffee shop, get back into public. And then you 00:09:41.779 --> 00:09:43.820 can be there and you can do a Bible study for 00:09:43.820 --> 00:09:45.799 yourself right there in the midst of these people. 00:09:45.879 --> 00:09:47.679 Maybe it'll start a conversation, but what it 00:09:47.679 --> 00:09:50.370 will... most assuredly do is it'll take you away 00:09:50.370 --> 00:09:54.049 from whatever that temptation was. Because now 00:09:54.049 --> 00:09:56.129 you're in a different situation. You've moved. 00:09:56.169 --> 00:09:58.289 You've fled that temptation. The Bible tells 00:09:58.289 --> 00:10:02.370 us to flee temptation. This brings me to my first 00:10:02.370 --> 00:10:06.230 point, which is the battle wages on. In our illustration, 00:10:07.049 --> 00:10:10.029 we are introduced to a man who allowed the whole 00:10:10.029 --> 00:10:12.809 world to pass him by because he worshiped a false 00:10:12.809 --> 00:10:15.590 god. And when he found himself alone, he had 00:10:15.590 --> 00:10:19.399 nothing to fall back on. The Bushido code requires 00:10:19.399 --> 00:10:23.600 a faith in the emperor of Japan at the time, 00:10:23.600 --> 00:10:27.580 a faith in him as their godhead. That is what 00:10:27.580 --> 00:10:30.299 the Bushido code calls for. So his god was defeated, 00:10:30.440 --> 00:10:35.860 and he couldn't believe it. He couldn't believe 00:10:35.860 --> 00:10:37.759 it because he was worshiping an idol of a man. 00:10:38.259 --> 00:10:40.659 He was cut off from everything and everyone, 00:10:40.879 --> 00:10:43.779 and he created for himself a prison within his 00:10:43.779 --> 00:10:49.559 own mind. So let's look back at his history. 00:10:49.879 --> 00:10:55.500 He was born in the Aichi Perfector of Japan in 00:10:55.500 --> 00:10:58.960 1915. Yokio worked as a tailor before being drafted 00:10:58.960 --> 00:11:05.419 into the Imperial Japanese Army in 1941. Per 00:11:05.419 --> 00:11:08.039 wanapali .com, which maintains a registry of 00:11:08.039 --> 00:11:10.179 Japanese World War II holdouts, he was stationed 00:11:10.179 --> 00:11:14.299 in China until February 1943 when he was transferred 00:11:14.299 --> 00:11:17.509 to Guam. After the American forces nearly annihilated 00:11:17.509 --> 00:11:21.070 Yokio's regiment in the summer of 1944, he and 00:11:21.070 --> 00:11:24.269 a group of nine or ten comrades escaped into 00:11:24.269 --> 00:11:27.610 the jungle. From the outset, they took enormous 00:11:27.610 --> 00:11:30.129 care not to be detected, erasing their footprints 00:11:30.129 --> 00:11:33.250 as they moved through the undergrowth. Initially, 00:11:33.250 --> 00:11:35.769 the holdouts survived by eating locals' cattle, 00:11:35.889 --> 00:11:38.190 but as their numbers shrank and the likelihood 00:11:38.190 --> 00:11:40.450 of discovery grew, they retreated to increasingly 00:11:40.450 --> 00:11:44.059 remote sections of the island. Living in caves 00:11:44.059 --> 00:11:46.720 or makeshift underground shelters and dining 00:11:46.720 --> 00:11:49.679 on coconuts, papaya, and shrimp, frogs, toads, 00:11:49.679 --> 00:11:53.940 eels, and rats, Yokio drew on his tailoring skills 00:11:53.940 --> 00:11:56.659 to weave clothing out of tree bark and marked 00:11:56.659 --> 00:11:58.980 the passage of time by observing the phases of 00:11:58.980 --> 00:12:01.440 the moon. He eventually parted ways with his 00:12:01.440 --> 00:12:04.240 companions who either surrender or fell victim 00:12:04.240 --> 00:12:07.080 to enemy soldiers on patrol or died as a result 00:12:07.080 --> 00:12:10.980 of their Spartan lifestyle. Yo -Kyo stayed in 00:12:10.980 --> 00:12:13.879 sporadic contact with two other stragglers, but 00:12:13.879 --> 00:12:17.220 after they died during flooding in 1964, he spent 00:12:17.220 --> 00:12:20.500 the last eight years hiding in total isolation. 00:12:22.320 --> 00:12:25.159 This reminds me of David in the cave. King David 00:12:25.159 --> 00:12:28.259 also found himself losing a war and alone in 00:12:28.259 --> 00:12:31.659 a cave. And that is where our psalm is said to 00:12:31.659 --> 00:12:35.360 have been inspired, alone in this cave. David 00:12:35.360 --> 00:12:37.759 had a lot to despair over. He also had a choice 00:12:37.759 --> 00:12:41.690 to make. In 1 Samuel 22, 1 through 2, it talks 00:12:41.690 --> 00:12:43.870 about this. It says, David departed from there 00:12:43.870 --> 00:12:46.350 and escaped to the cave of Adullam. And when 00:12:46.350 --> 00:12:48.470 his brothers and all his father's house had heard, 00:12:48.570 --> 00:12:51.470 they went down there to him. And everyone who 00:12:51.470 --> 00:12:53.629 was in distress and everyone who was in debt 00:12:53.629 --> 00:12:56.590 and everyone who was bitter in his soul gathered 00:12:56.590 --> 00:13:00.070 to him. And he became commander over them. And 00:13:00.070 --> 00:13:05.149 there were with him about 400 men. So a decision 00:13:05.149 --> 00:13:08.639 came to him. He was hiding out. But luckily, 00:13:08.720 --> 00:13:12.360 others came to him. Luckily, others searched 00:13:12.360 --> 00:13:14.759 him out. This is a good illustration of what 00:13:14.759 --> 00:13:17.840 we call follow -up within our fellowship. If 00:13:17.840 --> 00:13:20.340 you pray with someone, if you lead someone to 00:13:20.340 --> 00:13:23.879 the Lord, and then they kind of go to a quiet 00:13:23.879 --> 00:13:26.759 period. That's not uncommon. People battle. People 00:13:26.759 --> 00:13:30.620 struggle. There is a process of sanctification 00:13:30.620 --> 00:13:33.179 when you're a Christian and you're striving to 00:13:33.179 --> 00:13:36.039 live for Christ. And life's not always going 00:13:36.039 --> 00:13:39.669 to be perfect or easy. So these people came to 00:13:39.669 --> 00:13:42.929 him. They followed up to see how he was doing. 00:13:43.169 --> 00:13:46.409 So now he had a decision. Is he going to hide 00:13:46.409 --> 00:13:48.549 or is he going to fight? Is he going to sulk 00:13:48.549 --> 00:13:50.990 or is he going to pray? Is he going to surrender 00:13:50.990 --> 00:13:54.850 or is he going to overcome? Elijah had a similar 00:13:54.850 --> 00:14:00.710 case. When we look at 1 Kings 9, 1 through 3, 00:14:00.850 --> 00:14:02.710 and I've actually used the scripture several 00:14:02.710 --> 00:14:05.299 times. I like it quite a bit. It's when Elijah 00:14:05.299 --> 00:14:08.200 flees Jezebel. It says Ahab told Jezebel all 00:14:08.200 --> 00:14:10.200 that Elijah had done and how he killed all the 00:14:10.200 --> 00:14:12.559 prophets with the sword. And then Jezebel sent 00:14:12.559 --> 00:14:15.419 a messenger to Elijah saying, so may the gods 00:14:15.419 --> 00:14:17.740 do to me and more also if I do not make your 00:14:17.740 --> 00:14:20.039 life as the life of one of them by this time 00:14:20.039 --> 00:14:22.620 tomorrow. Then he was afraid and he rose and 00:14:22.620 --> 00:14:24.740 he ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which 00:14:24.740 --> 00:14:27.700 belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. 00:14:28.159 --> 00:14:34.429 So he ran. Times got tough and he fled. One chapter 00:14:34.429 --> 00:14:36.909 before this, we see Elijah standing up to King 00:14:36.909 --> 00:14:39.870 Ahab and the false prophets. We see Elijah calling 00:14:39.870 --> 00:14:44.350 literal fire down from heaven. We see this miraculous 00:14:44.350 --> 00:14:48.590 event in this overwhelming picture of power of 00:14:48.590 --> 00:14:52.929 our God. And then we see right after that, Elijah 00:14:52.929 --> 00:14:54.870 foretelling the coming of the rain, and then 00:14:54.870 --> 00:14:59.330 he runs past Ahab, who's in a chariot, and he 00:14:59.330 --> 00:15:03.440 outruns him. What power, what victory did Elijah 00:15:03.440 --> 00:15:09.019 have that day in the name of God? But then he 00:15:09.019 --> 00:15:13.059 succumbs to his fears and he flees into hiding 00:15:13.059 --> 00:15:17.919 at the words of a wicked woman. So even as a 00:15:17.919 --> 00:15:21.539 successful battle has just occurred, he is feeling 00:15:21.539 --> 00:15:26.299 the exhaustion. He is tired. Recovery and recuperation 00:15:26.299 --> 00:15:30.429 are needy, but we have to be wary. of what can 00:15:30.429 --> 00:15:34.230 become idleness. So I'm not saying that, you 00:15:34.230 --> 00:15:38.169 know, whatever word it was again, self -care, 00:15:38.230 --> 00:15:40.690 whatever, me time. I'm not saying that you're 00:15:40.690 --> 00:15:44.129 not going to sometimes need time to relax or 00:15:44.129 --> 00:15:46.909 decompress or sleep or any of that. That's not 00:15:46.909 --> 00:15:49.710 what I'm saying. But we have to be very aware 00:15:49.710 --> 00:15:54.580 of how that can become idleness. In periods of 00:15:54.580 --> 00:15:57.059 calm or lulls in action, we need to be fervent 00:15:57.059 --> 00:16:01.100 in our prayer just as we are in times of difficulty. 00:16:02.320 --> 00:16:04.799 It is in these periods that we're most susceptible 00:16:04.799 --> 00:16:06.860 to the slings and arrows of the devil. We can 00:16:06.860 --> 00:16:11.159 double guess ourselves and our impact. We can 00:16:11.159 --> 00:16:13.419 criticize our accomplishments and allow self 00:16:13.419 --> 00:16:15.740 -pity and even sin to creep in through the door. 00:16:16.320 --> 00:16:19.080 Sometimes being chased into hiding or a cave 00:16:19.080 --> 00:16:25.279 can be for the glory of God. They might have driven 00:16:51.350 --> 00:16:54.549 you to the wilderness just like Moses who encountered 00:16:54.549 --> 00:17:00.649 God. We are all going to be brought down. The 00:17:00.649 --> 00:17:05.549 cave doesn't protect us from God. Isolation is 00:17:05.549 --> 00:17:10.809 not the answer. We find ourselves alone. The children of Israel had been battling 00:20:32.450 --> 00:20:35.210 wicked paganism since entering the promised land. 00:20:35.329 --> 00:20:38.130 And you can see Gideon battling the same culture 00:20:38.130 --> 00:20:41.250 in Judges 6 .28, where it says, when the men 00:20:41.250 --> 00:20:43.029 of the town rose early in the morning, behold, 00:20:43.230 --> 00:20:45.950 the altar of Baal was broken down and Asherah 00:20:45.950 --> 00:20:48.190 beside it was cut down and the second bowl was 00:20:48.190 --> 00:20:51.369 offered on the altar that had been built. So 00:20:51.369 --> 00:20:53.410 the worship of Asherah and Baal were regularly 00:20:53.410 --> 00:20:56.799 tied together because Asherah is a fertility 00:20:56.799 --> 00:20:59.140 God, and Baal is the God that requires human 00:20:59.140 --> 00:21:03.019 sacrifice. This is the epitome of evil and wickedness. 00:21:03.220 --> 00:21:07.720 And we see the same cultural rot today. We see 00:21:07.720 --> 00:21:10.720 free sex leading to unwanted children, but then 00:21:10.720 --> 00:21:15.099 society enshrining the right to remove those 00:21:15.099 --> 00:21:20.619 poor babies. So we see the fertility or the given 00:21:20.619 --> 00:21:24.200 into the sexual depravity of our society gives 00:21:24.200 --> 00:21:27.849 way to... procreation as God intends procreation 00:21:27.849 --> 00:21:32.109 to happen. And so that same sin that led to the 00:21:32.109 --> 00:21:36.690 promiscuity of the time leads to the murder of 00:21:36.690 --> 00:21:42.990 the innocent. So we have Elijah dealing with 00:21:42.990 --> 00:21:45.430 this post -achievement depression. Elijah was 00:21:45.430 --> 00:21:47.910 coming down from the emotional high of confronting 00:21:47.910 --> 00:21:50.980 these false prophets of Baal. He had succeeded 00:21:50.980 --> 00:21:53.839 the people of Israel and rose up against these 00:21:53.839 --> 00:21:56.339 false prophets and they praised the one true 00:21:56.339 --> 00:21:59.359 God. He should have been elated. But he ran and 00:21:59.359 --> 00:22:02.480 hid in a cave instead. He was dealing with post 00:22:02.480 --> 00:22:04.960 -achievement depression, which involves experience 00:22:04.960 --> 00:22:08.059 a sense of purposelessness or sadness after completing 00:22:08.059 --> 00:22:12.619 a long -standing goal. This can produce a complex 00:22:12.619 --> 00:22:15.769 range of emotions. including a lack of motivation, 00:22:16.029 --> 00:22:19.089 tiredness, restlessness, frustration, self -doubt, 00:22:19.109 --> 00:22:23.730 sadness, an overall sense of melancholy and existential 00:22:23.730 --> 00:22:27.869 crisis. This is what Elijah was experiencing. 00:22:28.089 --> 00:22:31.069 It's not wrong when we feel these emotions, but 00:22:31.069 --> 00:22:33.210 what is wrong is when we allow them to take us 00:22:33.210 --> 00:22:37.230 away from our God. The right response is to lean 00:22:37.230 --> 00:22:41.980 into God. And God visits Elijah and this becomes 00:22:41.980 --> 00:22:44.259 a pretty clear picture of how we're supposed 00:22:44.259 --> 00:22:48.500 to deal with this in our own lives. In 1 Kings 00:22:48.500 --> 00:22:52.359 19, 11 through 13, we continue on with this story. 00:22:52.799 --> 00:22:55.180 And he said, go out and stand on the mount before 00:22:55.180 --> 00:22:58.039 the Lord. Behold, the Lord passed by and a great 00:22:58.039 --> 00:23:00.119 strong wind tore through the mountains and broke 00:23:00.119 --> 00:23:02.480 the pieces of rocks before the Lord. But the 00:23:02.480 --> 00:23:04.880 Lord was not in the wind. Elijah, God calls us to exit 00:23:29.059 --> 00:23:34.299 the cave. God visited Elijah and gave him a new 00:23:34.299 --> 00:23:38.240 mission, gave him a new hope and a new direction 00:23:38.240 --> 00:23:41.900 for his life. We continue on in verse 15. It 00:23:41.900 --> 00:24:04.250 says, to be the prophet in your place. And the 00:24:04.250 --> 00:24:06.230 one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall 00:24:06.230 --> 00:24:08.970 Jehu put to death. And the one who escapes from 00:24:08.970 --> 00:24:11.269 the sword of Jehu shall Elijah put to death. 00:24:11.410 --> 00:24:15.789 Yet I will leave 7 ,000 in Israel, all the knees 00:24:15.789 --> 00:24:18.809 that have not bowed to Baal and every mouth that 00:24:18.809 --> 00:24:21.589 has not kissed him. So although the mission is 00:24:21.589 --> 00:24:25.630 not done, God is still in control and he has 00:24:25.630 --> 00:24:30.140 risen up others to carry forth his purpose. This 00:24:30.140 --> 00:24:31.680 brings me to my final point, which is the lost 00:24:31.680 --> 00:24:35.500 lamb is found. We have heard the story of the 00:24:35.500 --> 00:24:37.740 Japanese Sergeant Sochiokyo, but he was not the 00:24:37.740 --> 00:24:41.140 only Japanese holdout. Second Lieutenant Hiro 00:24:41.140 --> 00:24:44.380 Onoda hid in Lubang Island in the Philippines 00:24:44.380 --> 00:24:48.299 for an amazing 29 years. He finally surrendered 00:24:48.299 --> 00:24:52.730 on March 5th, 1974. He is the most famous of 00:24:52.730 --> 00:24:55.190 all the holdouts. His story was widely reported 00:24:55.190 --> 00:24:57.529 in the worldwide media, and he wrote a book translated 00:24:57.529 --> 00:25:00.890 to English about his wartime experience and 29 00:25:00.890 --> 00:25:04.710 years as a Japanese holdout. He was born in the 00:25:04.710 --> 00:25:07.930 town of Canaan, Japan in 1922, and when he turned 00:25:07.930 --> 00:25:10.170 17, he went to work for a trading company in 00:25:10.170 --> 00:25:14.150 China. In May of 1942, Onoda was drafted in the 00:25:14.150 --> 00:25:16.369 Japanese army. Unlike most soldiers, he attended 00:25:16.369 --> 00:25:18.849 a school that trained men for guerrilla warfare. 00:25:21.119 --> 00:25:24.680 On December 26, 1944, at the age of 23, Hiro 00:25:24.680 --> 00:25:28.059 Onoda was sent to the small island of Lubang 00:25:28.059 --> 00:25:36.339 Island. Approximately 75 miles southwest of Manila 00:25:36.339 --> 00:25:38.039 in the Philippines, shortly after the Americans 00:25:38.039 --> 00:25:40.980 landed, all but four Japanese soldiers had either 00:25:40.980 --> 00:25:45.460 died or surrendered. Despite many efforts, he 00:25:45.460 --> 00:25:47.700 did not believe the war was over, and on February 00:25:47.700 --> 00:25:51.420 20, 1974, Onoda encountered a young Japanese 00:25:51.420 --> 00:25:55.119 university dropout named Norio Suzuki, who was 00:25:55.119 --> 00:25:57.119 traveling the world and told his friends that 00:25:57.119 --> 00:25:59.759 he was going to look for Lieutenant Onoda, a 00:25:59.759 --> 00:26:02.960 panda, and the abominable snowman in that order. 00:26:03.460 --> 00:26:06.660 The two became friends, but Onoda said that he 00:26:06.660 --> 00:26:09.720 was waiting for orders from his commanders. In Luke 15, 4 -7, it says, What man of you, 00:26:58.970 --> 00:27:02.430 having a hundred sheep, if he had lost one of 00:27:02.430 --> 00:27:04.730 them, does not leave the ninety -nine in the 00:27:04.730 --> 00:27:07.329 open country and go after the one that is lost? 00:27:07.839 --> 00:27:10.119 Until he finds it. And when he has found it, 00:27:10.160 --> 00:27:13.019 he lays it over his shoulders rejoicing. And 00:27:13.019 --> 00:27:14.960 when he comes home, he calls together his friends 00:27:14.960 --> 00:27:17.180 and his neighbors saying to them, rejoice with 00:27:17.180 --> 00:27:20.819 me for I have found my sheep that was lost. And if you are lost 00:27:44.230 --> 00:27:48.069 here today, he is searching and he is trying 00:27:48.069 --> 00:27:52.869 to reach out for you. You might be in a cave, 00:27:52.950 --> 00:27:55.630 but Jesus is calling to you. He has a plan for 00:27:55.630 --> 00:27:57.910 you. He values and loves you and wants to bring 00:27:57.910 --> 00:28:04.509 you into the fold. But not even death can separate 00:28:04.509 --> 00:28:09.799 Jesus from loving us. In John 11, we read the 00:28:09.799 --> 00:28:11.740 story of Lazarus, and this is a story that's 00:28:11.740 --> 00:28:15.160 powerful in many, many ways. The story of Lazarus 00:28:15.160 --> 00:28:18.339 is in John 11, and it starts with the horrible 00:28:18.339 --> 00:28:21.180 news that Lazarus, the brother of Martha and 00:28:21.180 --> 00:28:24.980 Mary, who anointed Jesus with oil, had fallen 00:28:24.980 --> 00:28:30.079 ill. We see the death of Lazarus. We see Lazarus 00:28:30.079 --> 00:28:33.099 being entombed, and nobody yet understood the 00:28:33.099 --> 00:28:35.859 power of Jesus. There was an obvious confusion 00:28:35.859 --> 00:28:39.259 with the disciples. And with Mary in John 11, 00:28:39.359 --> 00:28:42.500 it says, verses 25 through 27, I am the resurrection 00:28:42.500 --> 00:28:45.299 and the life. Whoever believes in me, though 00:28:45.299 --> 00:28:48.779 he die, yet shall he live. And everyone who lives 00:28:48.779 --> 00:28:51.740 and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe 00:28:51.740 --> 00:28:56.180 this? She said to him, yes, Lord, I believe that 00:28:56.180 --> 00:28:59.660 you are the Christ, the son of God, who is coming 00:28:59.660 --> 00:29:05.869 into this world. Later on in John 11, 39 through 00:29:05.869 --> 00:29:10.549 44, we see the tale of the rising of his Lazarus. 00:29:10.829 --> 00:29:13.089 Jesus said, take away the stone. And Martha, 00:29:13.150 --> 00:29:15.430 the sister of the dead man, said to him, Lord, 00:29:15.490 --> 00:29:17.690 by this time there will be an odor for he has 00:29:17.690 --> 00:29:22.150 been dead for days. For Jesus said to her, did 00:29:22.150 --> 00:29:24.089 I not tell you that if you believed you would 00:29:24.089 --> 00:29:26.809 see the glory of God? So they took away the stone 00:29:26.809 --> 00:29:29.210 and Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, Father, 00:29:29.269 --> 00:29:33.119 I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that 00:29:33.119 --> 00:29:35.359 you always hear me, but I said this on account 00:29:35.359 --> 00:29:37.680 of the people standing around, that they may 00:29:37.680 --> 00:29:40.480 believe that you sent me. And he does this for us even today. In 00:30:04.569 --> 00:30:07.269 Jesus, we have the confidence that we will rise 00:30:07.269 --> 00:30:09.289 from the dead and spend eternity with our Savior. 00:30:10.430 --> 00:30:13.349 Jesus will find us even in our caves and in our 00:30:13.349 --> 00:30:16.589 tomb to set us free. We do not need to hide from 00:30:16.589 --> 00:30:18.869 the world, but rather live in confidence that 00:30:18.869 --> 00:30:21.450 our Savior, Jesus Christ, has already defeated 00:30:21.450 --> 00:30:25.329 death. And that his sacrifice on Calvary has 00:30:25.329 --> 00:30:28.509 made a way for us to live in victory, both in 00:30:28.509 --> 00:30:32.599 this life, and forevermore. I could have every 00:30:32.599 --> 00:30:34.160 head bowed, every eye closed as I bring this 00:30:34.160 --> 00:30:38.500 to a conclusion. Again, I do this at the end 00:30:38.500 --> 00:30:41.500 of every message. I want to give an invitation. 00:30:44.240 --> 00:30:47.200 Maybe your heart's not right that this message 00:30:47.200 --> 00:30:50.440 has impacted you. Maybe you are living right 00:30:50.440 --> 00:30:55.119 now in a cave of your own creation. It's a physical choice to say, yes, I know 00:31:18.720 --> 00:31:22.539 I'm not right. If you rose your hand, God can 00:31:22.539 --> 00:31:25.019 see it, even though I can't. And I want you to 00:31:25.019 --> 00:31:26.900 repeat after me a quick little prayer.
