me to this very day. 65 00:06:52,960 --> 00:06:58,960 You see, we were swimming around having a blast when all of a sudden all these people 66 00:06:58,960 --> 00:07:03,960 started shouting and jumping into the pool along with us. 67 00:07:03,960 --> 00:07:07,960 At first we took the whole thing as a bit of a joke, 68 00:07:07,960 --> 00:07:15,960 but then we suddenly realised that the little brother of one of our mates was behind us 69 00:07:15,960 --> 00:07:21,960 and he couldn't touch the bottom of the pool and he was starting to drown. 70 00:07:21,960 --> 00:07:24,960 We didn't even see him. 71 00:07:24,960 --> 00:07:29,960 Others did though and they jumped in and they did something about it. 72 00:07:29,960 --> 00:07:36,960 And that story sticks with me even to today because we were totally oblivious 73 00:07:36,960 --> 00:07:40,960 to what was happening around us. 74 00:07:40,960 --> 00:07:47,960 Totally distracted in regards to this little brother who was starting to drown. 75 00:07:47,960 --> 00:07:54,960 And our apostle wants to make sure that the same thing doesn't happen in the church 76 00:07:54,960 --> 00:08:01,960 when it comes to our brothers and sisters who might be caught in sin 77 00:08:01,960 --> 00:08:05,960 and drowning right in front of us. 78 00:08:05,960 --> 00:08:13,960 Paul wants to make us aware that sin still is a problem for the flesh 79 00:08:13,960 --> 00:08:17,960 and that we need to be on the lookout for one another 80 00:08:17,960 --> 00:08:26,960 and be willing and able to jump in and help our siblings when they're things that I want you to take note of 83 00:08:38,960 --> 00:08:44,960 and just those first few words that I think will be really helpful for you. 84 00:08:44,960 --> 00:08:50,960 First, Paul tells us who he wants to be doing the restoring. 85 00:08:50,960 --> 00:08:56,960 And he says it's to be those who live by the spirit. 86 00:08:56,960 --> 00:09:01,960 As we've seen in the book of Galatians, people who have heard the gospel 87 00:09:01,960 --> 00:09:07,960 and put their faith in Jesus, it is they that have been crucified with Christ 88 00:09:07,960 --> 00:09:11,960 and now stand in the faith that they profess. 89 00:09:11,960 --> 00:09:19,960 And so to live by the spirit is to be led by the spirit in every area of your life. 90 00:09:19,960 --> 00:09:21,960 We had a look at this last week. 91 00:09:21,960 --> 00:09:26,960 The Holy Spirit is setting a new pattern of living, 92 00:09:26,960 --> 00:09:32,960 a new way of living in the life of God's children. 93 really Paul is saying anyone who is living faithfully in line of the gospel 96 00:09:49,960 --> 00:09:57,960 should be somewhere involved in the restoration of their brothers and sisters around them. 97 00:09:57,960 --> 00:10:06,960 So that's first, that's who's meant to be doing the restoring of those who are drowning in sin. 98 00:10:06,960 --> 00:10:11,960 Anyone who has the spirit of God leading and guiding them. 99 00:10:11,960 --> 00:10:17,960 So not just the elders and the deacons, you might notice. 100 00:10:17,960 --> 00:10:23,960 Second, Paul tells us how those who are drowning are to be restored. 101 00:10:23,960 --> 00:10:28,960 It's to be done gently, as he says here. 102 00:10:28,960 --> 00:10:35,960 It's interesting that Paul uses a Greek word that's associated with mending here. 103 00:10:35,960 --> 00:10:39,960 That's what sits under the word restore. 104 00:10:39,960 --> 00:10:46,960 In fact, it's the same word that the evangelist Mark used when talking of the apostles, 105 00:10:46,960 --> 00:10:52,960 when they sat on the shores of Galilee and mended their nets. 106 00:10:52,960 --> 00:11:01,960 And so straight away that tells you how spirit-filled Christians are to go about restoring one another. 107 00:11:01,960 --> 00:11:04,960 It's about mending them. 108 00:11:04,960 --> 00:11:12,960 And it needs to be done with patience and as Paul says here, with gentleness. 109 00:11:12,960 --> 00:11:18,960 It kind of sounds like the fruit of the spirit that we looked at last week. 110 00:11:18,960 --> 00:11:27,960 All that to say, Paul's point is this, restoration isn't about punishing people for their sin. 111 00:11:27,960 --> 00:11:35,960 But helping to mend them so that they can get back on the straight and narrow 112 00:11:35,960 --> 00:11:43,960 and continue living in the way that the spirit of God has called them to live. 113 00:11:43,960 --> 00:11:49,960 Church, what our apostle is directing us in here is such a beautiful 00:11:58,960 --> 00:12:01,960 This is an in-house discussion. 117 00:12:01,960 --> 00:12:10,960 And thus, when we see our spiritual siblings drowning in sin, we're meant to do something about it. 118 meant to be aware of each other and help mend one another. 120 00:12:28,960 --> 00:12:36,960 And so in saying that, I want you to take note of what our apostle isn't saying here. 121 00:12:36,960 --> 00:12:44,960 He's not saying that he wants the people of God to be agreeable and passive with those around us. 122 00:12:44,960 --> 00:12:51,960 In other words, he doesn't want us to be the kind of church that sees someone drowning and says, 123 00:12:51,960 --> 00:12:54,960 I don't want to disturb them. 124 00:12:54,960 --> 00:12:58,960 I don't want to make them feel uncomfortable. 125 00:12:58,960 --> 00:13:05,960 I don't want them to feel uneasy about their lifestyle choices or make a fuss. 126 00:13:05,960 --> 00:13:14,960 That's to tolerate sin and to allow it to thrive in the life of those that we profess to love. 127 00:13:14,960 --> 00:13:20,960 And so we mustn't take Paul's command here to be gentle in restoring, 128 00:13:20,960 --> 00:13:33,960 in mending our struggling family members as a command to sit back and be partial as they drown in sin right in front of us. 129 00:13:33,960 --> 00:13:40,960 Now a sign of a healthy church is a church that is keeping a close watch on themselves 130 00:13:40,960 --> 00:13:51,960 so that they might walk by the spirit and have the life of our Lord and Saviour evident to all those around them. 131 00:13:51,960 --> 00:14:02,960 A sign of a healthy church is a church that doesn't quench the spirit but is led by him in all that they say and do. 132 00:14:02,960 --> 00:14:05,960 And this is the thing. 133 theology, to have fantastic events and building projects all the while ignoring those around us who might be broken and torn and treaded on, 135 00:14:34,960 --> 00:14:37,960 well that's a church to rail guards, we might say, on the bowling alley when it comes to Christian faithfulness. 171 00:18:02,960 --> 00:18:14,960 Humble self-scrutiny in light of the word and dependent prayer for the grace of God to help keep you on the straight and narrow. 172 00:18:14,960 --> 00:18:24,960 And so that's first, the spirit of God will lead us to help others and that's because restoration is important to
