This episode is part two of our duology on Google DeepMind and SynthID. If you haven’t yet, I suggest you listen to part 1 before listening to this episode. So how can the average Google user use this? According to Google, “users can identify if an image, or part of an image, was generated by Google's Al tools through the About this image feature in Search or Chrome.” Google also noted that SynthID’s text watermarking technology is designed to be compatible with most AI text generation models and can be scaled across different content types and platforms. However, even Google’s announcement notes that “The model used to produce synthetic images and audio examples on this page may be different from the model used on YouTube, Imagen on Vertex AI.” Where is SynthID available? According to Google, “This technology is available to Vertex AI customers using our text-to-image models, Imagen 3 and Imagen 2, which create high-quality images in a wide variety of artistic styles. SynthID technology is also watermarking the image outputs on Imagerx. “We've also integrated SynthID into Veo, our most capable video generation model to date, which is available to select creators on VideoFX.” As of May 14th, all videos generated by Veo on VideoFX will be watermarked by SynthID. Google DeepMind further clarified that while “SynthID works effectively on its own, it can also be combined with other AI detection approaches to give better coverage across content types and platforms.” This toolkit is currently launched in beta. However, how effective SynthID will actually be in tackling the misinformation problem is unclear, considering it only works on Google’s own tools. However, the company has stated its plans to publish more about its text watermarking technology in a detailed research paper published sometime this summer, and said that it would open-source SynthID text watermarking through its updated Responsible Generative Al Toolkit, allowing developers to incorporate this technology into their own models. Looks like we’ll just have to wait and see what will become of SynthID. Thank you for listening to The Old and the New, and see you next episode.
