Two days ago, Netflix quietly released a free app called “Netflix Game Controller” on the iOS App Store. This app turns your phone into a game controller and is Netflix‘s newest move in their approach to get into the cloud gaming business. The app’s description details that the Netflix Game Controller “pairs with your TV and allows you to play games on Netflix using your phone or mobile device.” However, though the app has appeared on the App Store, there is not yet any news as to which games can be played with it. Its description on the App Store only says “coming soon to Netflix” and Netflix has yet to share additional details. As a news reporter for the Verge, Umar Shakir, explains, “If you download and launch the app, it asks you to choose a game on your TV and follow directions to connect, which currently does not do anything. The app’s splash screen also points out that “Netflix Games on TV are in beta” and that “some devices may not be supported at this time.”” The news of Netflix’s expansion to the TV screen has been a long time coming. Mike Verdu, Netflix’s VP of games, announced the company’s aim to create a cloud gaming service at the TechCrunch Disrupt event last October. Additionally, earlier this year Netflix’s VP of external games, Leanne Loombe, said that Netflix wanted to make its games “playable on every Netflix device that you have.” She also mentioned that the cloud gaming service was “underway.” As of the time of writing this episode, Netflix has yet to share any details about the game controller app and their plans and timeline regarding TV gaming. However, many people expect an announcement to happen in the upcoming months. So far the app is only available in the iOS App Store and is not on Google Play.
