¡Hola amigo o amiga, gracias por escuchar Season One of the Spanish Conversation Podcast! For this, el ultimo episodio de la primera temporada, we will work on what and which questions, using Qué and Cuál, y practicaremos con ocho preguntas, un poco de vocabulario, y, como siempre, habrá silencio, donde quiero oirte. una vez más, tenemos el siguiente vocabulario: 1. frustrar = to frustrate 2. el propósito = purpose 3. sonar = to sound 4. el apellido = last name 5. ahora mismo = right now 6. la preferencia = preference Imagine you are tratando de preguntar algo y no estás seguro o segura, es qué, o cuál? Below are some templates for questions that should help with the decision-making proceso. 1. ¿Cuál es tu …. favorito? - What is your favorite…? No better way to get to know someone than by learning their preferences or favorites. The common choices are color, banda, película, restaurante. Use this as a simple template to ask which is at the top of the list for the listener. Make sure to make adjustments to favorito and tu depending on the object and the person you’re speaking to. 2. ¿Qué te gustaría hacer hoy?– What would you like to do today? Here the sky is the limit for the answer, by design, the question leaves any choice available to the listener. If there are a set number of options, like A and B, you would be better off using cuál and guiding with those choices. 3. ¿Qué te está frustrando ahora mismo?- what is frustrating you right now? I love this present progressive question for its specificity and its desire to understand the person’s emotions and issues. You can interchange frustrar for enojar (to anger) or entristecer (sadden) or anything other verb associated with an emotion. 4. ¿Cuál es el propósito de…? – What is the purpose of …? Here it really seems like we should say Qué for what, because our english brain wants to. But if you think in Spanish, you can maybe see that there are a couple purposes (propósitos) and you are asking the listener to select the one that makes sense. 5. ¿Cuál suena mejor…? – Which sounds better…? Here there are two or a few options, and the person you are asking with this question is encouraged to choose one. Suena is from sonar, to sound. 6. ¿Qué puedo hacer? – What can I do? Nice and simple, while also helpful! Here you are asking what you can do, with all options available due to the vagueness of the what / qué. If there are a set number of tasks available, you could switch to which, cuál. 7. ¿Qué has estado haciendo hoy? – What have you been doing today? We are using a participle (perfect tense) as well as progressive tense, so this is a bit advanced. However, if you can conjugate haber, then use estado, then any progressive verb (like comiendo, hablando), you’re all set! 8. ¿Cuál es tu nombre? – What is your name? The assumption here is there is a set number of options for names, and that you need to select which is yours. Remember to think in your Spanish brain! The other option is ¿Cómo te llamas? if you prefer. What do you think, deberíamos charlar ahora, tú y yo? Bueno, adelante. ¿Qué has estado haciendo hoy? PAUSE Mi respuesta es / My answer is: Gracias por preguntar, he estado trabajando en un episodio nuevo del podcast hoy. ¿Y tú? (note I use the same format of haber + estado + progressive verb). ¿Cuál es tu color favorito? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Mi color favorito es anaranjado, pero a veces me gusta también rosa, dependiendo del tono (how is your color vocab?). ¿Cuál es tu nombre? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Mi nombre es Alyssa, y mi apellido es Bonelli. Y tú, ¿cómo te llamas? (apellido is last name and I posed the question back in another format). (No me importa is how we say “I don’t care”). (The beginning is conditional and past subjunctive, which might be a bit advanced for now, what am I asking for?) (did you catch that el tiempo means weather? And how about that vocab about ropa?) (why is my health insurance company frustrating me?) (refer back to episode 15 for proposing an idea, some of the vocab here is featured in that episode such as qué tal si) Alrighty that’s all for now, and by that I mean, that’s all for season one! Holy cow! if you made it all the way through, either the beginner, or the intermediate episodes, or all 20 in total, I say enhorabuena or congrats to you, if you tried speaking back to the phone or computer I know you might have felt dorky, but you are taking the necessary steps to get better at speaking.
