¡Hola a ti! Welcome back to the Spanish Conversation podcast, for one of the last episodios of the temporada! Today we will channel our inner toddler and ask a bunch of why questions, I have 8 of them prepared for you to practice using the interrogative phrase [removed]. Yo elegí / chose some vocabulario para ti, para ayudar con las preguntas y respuestas: 1. comprar = to buy 2. tanto = so much 3. nosotros mismos = ourselves 4. triste = sad 5. porque = because (all one word, no accent) 6. por qué = why (two words, accent) Okay, ready to try it out? Let’s go! Imagine you are infinitely curioso o curiosa, and want to ask some questions involving the palabra interrogativa “why”. Note that your tone can make these questions come across as curious or accusatory, ¡ten cuidado! here are the questions I am going to ask you today and their translations: 1. ¿Por qué no lo compraríamos? – Why wouldn’t we buy it? The conditional tense, used here for comprar, creates would we buy, and hopefully you can see how this is a template for any Why would we not _____? if you used a different verb. If you’re comfortable conjugating different subjects in conditional, you could change the nosotros out as well. 2. ¿Por qué te gusta tanto? – Why do you like it so much? Gustar is tricky, so I would be careful making too many edits here. If the thing you like is singular, then its gusta, if the thing you like is plural, then its gustan. A safer play might be using querer for want or necesitar for need, although this does change the meaning. 3. ¿ Por qué no lo hacemos nosotros mismos? – Why don’t we do it ourselves? In the DIY spirit, this is a great question to ask when confronted with a big bill for a home renovation, marketing, etc. The [removed] is ourselves, but will need to be changed if you would rather opt for myself (yo mismo) or yourself (ti mismo), of course after changing the hacer conjugation as well. 4. ¿Por qué no me dijiste antes? – Why didn’t you tell me before? This has some sass to it, but tone can soften it. Let’s say someone has a big struggle or life event and you are just finding out. You could also use contar (to tell, count) instead of decir, and you can use a different form of decir in preterit such as ustedes or ella, etc. 5. ¿Por qué tenemos que dedicar tiempo a esto hoy? Why do we have to dedicate time to this today? This basic template here is used as a genuine question about the priority of a task that seems of low importance, and can also be changed out for should we dedicate (deberíamos dedicar) or need to dedicate (necesitamos dedicar). Similarly, dedicate time can be swapped for to buy, to clean, etc. 6. ¿Por qué has estado triste recientemente? – Why have you been sad lately? This question is of course assumptive, meaning you know or assume the person recently has been sad. You could also use other forms of estar like estás for present, are sad, or estuviste, for preterit, were sad. 7. ¿Por qué hiciste eso? – Why did you do that? ten cuidado or be careful amigos, this one can sound a bit sassy or sharp if the tone is accusatory. But if you are genuinely curious why someone did something, this generic eso (that) can suffice or you could be specific and refer to the action (eat all of my leftovers, for instance). 8. ¿Por qué no? – Why not? Short and sweet, this question can either be a challenge, or a confirmation, just like in english. So it could be an ask of what the reason is for not doing something, or a different way to agree casually to plans or an idea. Alright, random questions, coming right up! ¿Por qué no me dijiste antes? PAUSE Mi respuesta es / My answer is: No supe como reaccionarías, y siendo honesta yo estaba avergonzada de la situación. Esperaba que todo mejoraría sin tener que discutirlo. Ahora yo sé que fue estúpido, lo siento. (Reaccionar is to react, avergonzada is ashamed. What was my plan?) ¿Por qué te gusta tanto? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Creo que tiene que ver con el estilo de escritura que usa el autor. ¡Es increíble! Puede ser un libro de quinientos páginas y estoy interesada y emocionada estar leyendo todo el tiempo. Hay otro libro de la serie estrenando en unas semanas, estoy en la lista de espera para una copia. (What is the thing I like so much?) ¿Por qué has estado triste recientemente? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Es muy dulce que hayas notado. En esta época del año, hace mucho frio y casi nunca quiero salir de la casa. No consigo mucho sol y no hago planes sociales. Cada año me sorprende, pero es el mismo. El invierno me afecta. (Dulce is sweet, hayas notado is you have noticed, in subjunctive. What has got me down?) ¿Por qué no lo compraríamos? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: El mes pasado, gastamos un montón de dinero en reparaciones para tu carro, ¿recuerdas? Creo que es mejor si esperamos comprar el nuevo portátil hasta el próximo año, ¿está bien? (What did the person want to buy, and why not now?) ¿Por qué hiciste eso? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Porque quería tener más tiempo para relajar, y no creo que necesito tener dos empleos a la misma vez, me cansa mucho. Siempre puedo conseguir otro trabajo si necesito, no te preocupes. (What did I do, and what is my command no te preocupes saying?) ¿Por qué no lo hacemos nosotros mismos? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Tengo miedo de hacerlo mal y arruinar nuestros pisos con agua del grifo. No tengo confianza en mis habilidades de hacer proyectos en la casa. Yo sé que son seiscientos dólares contratar a un plomero hacerlo, pero si no, temo que haremos más daño en el fin. (What is the thing to do ourselves? Why don’t I want to do it? Hint: Arruinar is ruin) ¿Por qué no? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Porque es una gran decisión comprar un carro, y los pagos mensuales son super altos. Si podemos esperar un año más, no sé porque necesitamos tener un carro nuevo. El que tenemos es suficiente y no tiene problemas. ¿Me explico? (What does the person asking want to do, and why don’t I agree with it? me explico is asking if i have explained myself well) ¿Por qué tenemos que dedicar tiempo a esto hoy? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Hemos dicho por meses que vamos a limpiar el garaje. Es imposible caminar en ello y me estresa cada vez que lo veo. No tenemos planes hoy y yo sé que sería más divertido descansar, pero tenemos buen tiempo afuera, y el próximo domingo no tanto. (Notice the use of ello and lo, did you know they both mean [removed]? Descansar is to rest. Why is it better not to wait til next Sunday?) Okay, la interrogación ya terminó. What was your favorite pregunta using [removed] .
