¡Buenos días de Colorado y Welcome to the Spanish Conversation Podcast! You’re now halfway through the Intermediate episodios of Season One, and you are crushing it! Since you’re back for more, tenemos ocho preguntas, lo usual, pero hoy son existential questions that may actually be best to respond to in journal form, since it’s tough to answer en unos pocos segundos. So, recomiendo escuchar este episodio when you are seated with pen and paper and ready to dig into your brain for some complicated answers. Más que eso, the formato will be the same as always, vocab, translated preguntas, and then the random questions with pauses para responder. This is the hardest combo in Spanish, the past subjunctive after si / if, and then the conditional in the next clause. We get to past subjunctive via the ellos form of preterit, tuvieron. 2. ¿Cómo explicarías la idea de religión a un niño? ¿Un extreterrestre? – How would you explain the idea of religion to a child? An alien? This “How would you” concept can be applied to many other verbs in conditional, like sentirse, decir, etc. 3. ¿Cómo podríamos resolver el hambre en el mundo?– How could we resolve hunger in the world? another conditional phrase, ideal for existential or hypothetical questions such as these. Resolver is resolve, some also use solucionar for solve, sounds like solution so also a good option. 4. ¿Piensas que todos debemos apoyar a los otros, o que cada persona es responsable por si mismo? –Do you think that everyone must support one another, or that everyone is responsible for themselves? Deber is tricky, here as debemos its more like we must, and when its in conditional, like deberíamos, its less forceful, sounding like [removed]. Either would work here. 5. ¿Si tú fueras el presidente, ¿Qué cambiarías primero? –If you were the president, what would you change first? Another si past subjunctive and conditional combo, if you wanted to, now would be a good time to try using this structure for your own question. Reminder that we use ellos preterit, which is how ser turned to fueron, and then to fueras. 6. ¿ Cuáles son unas de tus opiniones poco populares? – What are a few of your unpopular opinions? Poco popular is unpopular, this is because there really is no “un” other than des- and its only used in some instances. Unas here is some, adjusted to opinión, which is feminine, la. 7. ¿Puede la gente cambiar? – Can people change? Ahh, simplest one yet, right? You could rework this order to [removed] just remember that its a question, thats why the la gente comes later and not in front of puede. Cambiar is not conjugated because its back to back with puede, technically, even if la gente splits it up. You may use subjunctive for your opinion, emotion, or doubt in your answer, unless of course you know for certain and want to make a statement in present. 8. ¿Si tú estuvieras en una isla aislada y podrías llevar cinco cosas para sobrevivir, qué llevarías y por qué? – If you were on an isolated island and could bring five things to survive, what would you bring and why? Whew, this is si, past subjunctive, and two iterations of conditional – difícil! A classic question you may have heard before, you could respond using llevar for bring, or traer works just as well. ¡Lo hiciste! You learned some real head-scratching preguntas en español. Quizás puedes tomar una pausa aquí y escribir una respuesta más larga a las preguntas para este episodio. Reading aloud while doing this ayuda mucho también. I wont do long pausas so this episode doesnt drag on in silence, so be sure you pause each time and answer. ¿Cuáles son unas de tus opiniones poco populares? PAUSE Mi respuesta es / My answer is: Yo creo que es estúpido que cuando la gente pregunta ¿Cómo estás?, en los estados unidos solo hay tres respuestas aceptables: bien, cansada, ocupada. Ninguna revela mucho de lo que se siente la persona, y son tan usadas que casi no tienen valor. (Did you catch my rant about answers to how are you?) ¿Puede la gente cambiar? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Solo si la persona de verdad quiere. De joven, yo pensaba que, con más edad viene más madurez e inteligencia, pero en unos casos, eso no pasa porque la persona piensa que ya sabe todo, que su personalidad y sus hábitos son fijos. Es un estado de mente, que no todos poseen. (Did I give a yes or no answer? To help you decide, madurez is maturity, estado de mente is state of mind, and poseen from poseer is they possess. Try again if you didn’t catch it). ¿Si tú estuvieras en una isla aislada y podrías llevar cinco cosas para sobrevivir, qué llevarías y por qué? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Yo traería primero un cuchillo, para cortar fruta, y asquerosamente, tal vez un animal o pez. Entonces, yo llevaría unas cerillas para hacer fuego, no quiero tener frio. Tercero, yo llevaría un filtro para hacer agua limpia de agua del océano o rio. Cuarto, yo necesitaría un sartén para cocinar la comida, y evitar bacteria.
