Hola, and welcome back to the Spanish Conversation Podcast with me, Alyssa Bonelli. ¿Qué tal, cómo te va? Okay did you answer that question yet? Bueno. Hoy tenemos ocho preguntas para proposing an idea to alguien. El formato es el mismo como siempre, con vocabulario, preguntas con traducciones, y preguntas con pausa. Got that? Super, ahora empezamos con vocabulario. 1. los planes = plans 2. preferir = to prefer 3. opinar = to be opinionated about / to opine 4. la opinión = opinion 5. los mariscos = seafood 6. la preferencia = preference 7. odiar = to hate 8. ¿te parece? = sound good? 9. encantar = to love 10. la cita = date, appointment 11. el cine = movie theater Imagine que quieres hacer una sugerencia or a suggestion about something to un amigo o colega. Let’s learn some maneras diferentes de hacerlo! here are the questions I am going to ask you today and their translations: 1. ¿Qué tal si…?– What if…? You may know Qué tal from whats up, as a greeting, but here with si or if after, it takes on a starter for a suggestion. Present tense should work fine for something that hasn’t happened. The other option is past subjunctive, a little harder, like [removed] saying if we went using ir. Make it negative with qué tal si no… 2. ¿Te gustaría comer / beber / mirar…?– Would you like to eat / drink / watch…? This is how you can ask if you would like, also available for ustedes questions as les gustaría, changing the pronoun. You may also say “would like” with quisieras for tú or quisieran for ustedes. Not a direct translation and a harder tense, in my opinion. 3. ¿Está bien si no…?– Is it okay if I/we/they don’t? This is like what if, but moreso getting the opinion of the person about if something is good / ok instead of a more broad [removed]. The conjugation of the next verb is what determines the I / we / they, like [removed]. 4. ¿Podríamos cambiar los planes para mañana? –Could we change the plans for tomorrow? Poder in the conditional makes podríamos for nosotros, podrías for tú, etc. Use whichever makes sense to start your question with Would ____ be able to / Could and then usually a verb, infinitive, like volver, llamar, visitar, etc will follow. 5. ¿Qué te opinas de una cita a las ocho? –What is your opinion about an 8 o clock appointment? When you want an opinion you can ask with [removed], which is from the reflexive opinarse. It sounds like what do you think but with an opinion twist. You could get fancy with opinarías for would think / would be your opinion or in the preterit or imperfect for an opinion about something in the past. 6. ¿Cuál preferirías, mariscos o carne? – Which would you prefer, seafood or beef? A mouthful for sure. If you haven’t yet, try saying preferirías or even harder, preferiríamos. Got it? Cool. The conditional here adds would, so we want the preference by asking would you prefer, for tú, but could adjust as earlier with nosotros, or ustedes. If the tongue twister is too much, drop back to present tense with [removed] or [removed], noting the eie stem change. 7. Creo que es mejor alquilar que comprar, ¿te parece? – I think its better to rent than buy, do you think? Te parece is a classic for thoughts? Sound good? What do you think? Its not a reflexive here, since parece is for “it seems” and te is to you. So you only need to adjust the pronoun to a different IOP like le, les, nos, etc. 8. ¿Cuál sería el problema con…? –What would be the problem with…? Here you want to try a pro and con approach. The flipside would be asking about advantages, or ventajas, or perhaps benefits as beneficios. The idea is you will hear a response with outcomes or issues with a specific action. Guau, ¡eso fue mucho! This intermediate portion of the Season is no joke! If you don’t need to repetir, tomar apuntes, usar el baño, then aquí vienen las preguntas en random order. ¿Cuál preferirías, mariscos o carne? PAUSE Mi respuesta es / My answer is: Tipicamente prefiero mariscos, pero solo cuando estamos cerca de la costa, porque saben mejor. Aquí, tal vez un plato vegetariano o un bistec sería mejor. (what is my hesitation with seafood? And did you know saber also means to taste?) ¿Podríamos cambiar los planes de mañana? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Ahh si, no pasa nada. ¿Cuándo quieres salir entonces? Estoy disponible el jueves a las seis o el domingo por la tarde. (No pasa nada is no worries. When am I disponible, or free?) ¿Cuál sería el problema con conducir nuestros dos carros? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: El único problema es que tendríamos que pagar dos veces por estacionar en la ciudad, ¡que es caro! ¿Podrías recogerme en mi casa antes de la fiesta? (estacionar is to park, and recoger is to pick up, did you catch my idea?) ¿Creo que es mejor alquilar que comprar, ¿te parece? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Bueno, en esta ciudad sí. No hay muchas casas que comprar, y las que hay son antiguas con muchos problemas. Yo recomiendo que alquilemos por el primer año. (check out my subjunctive recommendation at the end). ¿Qué te opinas de una cita a las ocho? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: No sé si puedo estar allí a las ocho, el tráfico es fatal a esa hora. ¿Podemos agendarla a las nueve? (fatal is rough, terrible. I’m asking to agendar or schedule at what time instead?) ¿Está bien si no vengo al evento este fin de semana? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Bueno amor, si no quieres venir, ¡no vengas! Todas mis amigas estarán allí así que estaré muy bien entretenida. (no vengas is a negative tú command for what verb? Entretenida from entretener is entertained). ¿Te gustaría mirar una película en el cine conmigo? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Oh sí, ¡me encantaría! Acaba de estrenar una nueva película de Marvel, y tú sabes cuánto me encanta Marvel. (estrenar is to open, come out as in a movie, and acaba de is loosely translated to has just). ¿Qué tal si vamos al super después de trabajo hoy? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Pues, creo que ir antes del trabajo es mejor, porque no tendremos tiempo para cocinar si esperamos hasta después del día hábil. ¿Te parece? (What was I proposing about going to the super / supermarket instead?) Pues, es todo lo que tengo para hoy. Ojalá que tengas ideas para proponer una idea.
