¡Hola amigo o amiga! Bienvenidos a The Spanish conversation Podcast! How solid do you feel with using interrogativos like Cómo, quién, cuál, Dónde, etc.? If you’re not driving, take a second to brush up on your interrogative words and while you’re at it, grab a cuaderno and a pluma or your notes app on your móvil and start taking notes. Aquí tienes a couple of words or phrases that might help you con este episodio: 1. el mesero is waiter 2. preferir is to prefer 3. la cena is dinner 4. estar and ser mean to be 5. ir is to go 6. eso, esa, ese all mean that 7. decir is to say, to tell 8. porque is because Okay, ready to bring who, what, where, and when to life? ¡Vamos! 1. ¿Dónde está el mesero? – Where is the waiter? Here we use estar (a lot of where questions use it) in present tense él form, and you would likely want to put a location such as el baño or el aeropuerto in the answer. 2. ¿Quién es esa mujer? – Who is that woman? You could also try another word like hombre, chica, or even just a general use of persona for person. If there are plural people, you could say [removed] for who are. 3. ¿Cuándo es la cena? – When is dinner? Other options for this question could include el desayuno, and el almuerzo for breakfast and lunch, or some other event. The use es from the verb ser is most common after cuando, since ser is used for date and time. 4. ¿Qué es eso? – What is that? This is a great one for when you don’t know exactly what [removed] is, you can use [removed], and then the person can hopefully give you the word you are looking for. Esto, for this, would also work. 5. ¿Cuál prefieres? – Which do you prefer? Sometimes what and which are used interchangeably in English, here its which, and this is best when there are a set number of choices and you are asking the person to choose. Querer for to want could work just as well as preferir, to prefer. 6. ¿Adónde vas / vamos? –Where are you / we going? Perhaps you are on a bus and not sure where you’re headed, or unsure of the itinerary for a tour, you can ask where we are going or you could ask, if someone is leaving, where they are off to. Even though we are using present tense here, it will sound like ing, for going. 7. ¿Por qué no? – Why not? Maybe this is a rhetorical question, but its a way to challenge a no, or to give assent like sure, why not? 8. ¿Cómo se dice…? – How do you say…? This is how you learn a new word, maybe from English to Spanish, with a tutor or someone bilingual. If you want the meaning of a word in Spanish, its best to ask “¿Qué significa…?” to ask what does … mean? Okay, listo, ready? Here come the questions in random order. Make sure you pause during the break if you don’t have enough time to reply. ¿Adónde vamos? PAUSE Mi respuesta es / My answer is: Vamos al museo, donde vamos a tomar un tour y entonces caminar por la ciudad. (ir a infinitive) ¿Cuál prefieres? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: De verdad, prefiero la camiseta roja en lugar de la camiseta amarilla. ¿La tienen en una talla grande? (¿Do you know what type of item this is that I prefer? Clothes, food?) ¿Cómo se dice reservation en español? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: [removed] en español es la reserva, o a veces, la reservación dependiendo de quien preguntas (preguntar is to ask a question, and depender is to depend). ¿Por qué no? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Porque cuesta mucho dinero y no quiero ir. (Here I tried some common excuses or reasons for why not). ¿Quién es esa mujer? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Ella es la dueña de la tienda, ella puede discutir los descuentos y la materia de esa cartera de piel (dueña means owner, and descuentos are discounts, and esa is that, feminine). ¿Dónde está el mesero? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: él está fumando en el callejón, va a regresar en unos pocos minutos, gracias por la paciencia (did you catch the reason, and length of the smoke break?) ¿Cuándo es la cena? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: La cena es a las cinco esta noche, en el restaurante dentro del hotel. Si necesitamos, podemos ir a las seis en lugar (Did you catch the time and the alternate option?) ¿Qué es eso? PAUSE Mi respuesta es: Ese es un formulario que necesitas llenar antes de realizar el pago para la renta de la casita para el mes de enero. (formulario is form, and realizar is to complete, this is a hard one, did you catch the whole thing?) Well that’s all for now amigos, I hope these basic questions create some structure for you that you can use to create further interrogative questions using these who, what, where questions.
