We 00:00:33.640 --> 00:00:36.200 see so many examples, dear Lord, in the New Testament 00:00:36.200 --> 00:00:39.640 and our own lives, God. We see time and time 00:00:39.640 --> 00:00:42.240 again how good you are to your people. Amen. 00:01:06.799 --> 00:01:12.159 Now, throughout this Psalm 105, we see some examples 00:01:12.159 --> 00:01:15.959 of God's faithfulness. And really, we start with 00:01:15.959 --> 00:01:19.060 Abraham, and the psalmist kind of makes their 00:01:19.060 --> 00:01:21.659 way through some of these early days of Israel. 00:01:21.799 --> 00:01:24.239 And it's a call to remembrance. That's really 00:01:24.239 --> 00:01:26.780 what we looked at last week in these first... 00:01:27.049 --> 00:01:30.810 In a few verses, we see this call to give thanks 00:01:30.810 --> 00:01:34.090 to Yahweh, to call on His name. And then in verse 00:01:34.090 --> 00:01:37.750 5, to remember the wonderful works He has done. 00:01:37.989 --> 00:01:40.909 And of course, the Scripture is full of wonderful 00:01:40.909 --> 00:01:43.150 works that God has done. From the beginning of 00:01:43.150 --> 00:01:45.390 the Bible to the end of the Bible, we see... 00:01:45.709 --> 00:01:49.069 wonderful works that God has done. And last week 00:01:49.069 --> 00:01:52.170 we saw that God was faithful to his people, that 00:01:52.170 --> 00:01:55.189 he had made a promise to Abraham that all nations 00:01:55.189 --> 00:01:58.950 would be blessed through Abraham. And in the 00:01:58.950 --> 00:02:01.349 short term, this was going to mean God's people 00:02:01.349 --> 00:02:03.670 were going to be established through Abraham 00:02:03.670 --> 00:02:05.989 and they were eventually going to get a land 00:02:05.989 --> 00:02:08.419 that was going to be their own. And in the long 00:02:08.419 --> 00:02:11.379 term, it was pointing to Jesus Christ, that not 00:02:11.379 --> 00:02:13.800 just the Jewish people were going to be blessed 00:02:13.800 --> 00:02:16.680 by God. Indeed, they were God's people, and they 00:02:16.680 --> 00:02:20.199 were chosen to be the means by which the Messiah 00:02:20.199 --> 00:02:23.800 would come. And so God established his people 00:02:23.800 --> 00:02:26.699 so that he could establish a way to bring about 00:02:26.699 --> 00:02:31.280 Jesus Christ, our Savior, and he fulfilled all 00:02:31.280 --> 00:02:34.060 of those promises. Now, of course, this psalm 00:02:34.060 --> 00:02:37.930 is not... Not looking too far out to Jesus, but 00:02:37.930 --> 00:02:41.289 in the short term, it's reminding us that God 00:02:41.289 --> 00:02:44.370 did establish his people through Abraham. And 00:02:44.370 --> 00:02:46.270 he promised to bring them into the promised land, 00:02:46.449 --> 00:02:49.050 and God had done just that. He had brought his 00:02:49.050 --> 00:02:52.229 people into the promised land. And that's what 00:02:52.229 --> 00:02:55.310 we looked at last week. That's the first reference 00:02:55.310 --> 00:02:59.469 we see, a reminder we see of God. fulfilling 00:02:59.469 --> 00:03:02.889 his promises, that he was faithful to his people. 00:03:03.069 --> 00:03:05.550 And tonight in verse 12, we're going to start 00:03:05.550 --> 00:03:08.129 and we're going to look at the next instance, 00:03:08.250 --> 00:03:10.990 the next reminder of God's faithfulness. Verse 00:03:10.990 --> 00:03:14.689 12, when they were few in number, that is God's 00:03:14.689 --> 00:03:16.990 people, when they were few in number, very few 00:03:16.990 --> 00:03:20.949 indeed, and temporary residents in Canaan, wandering 00:03:20.949 --> 00:03:23.930 from nation to nation and from one kingdom to 00:03:23.930 --> 00:03:28.020 another, he allowed no one to oppress them. He 00:03:28.020 --> 00:03:31.740 rebuked kings on their behalf. Do not touch my 00:03:31.740 --> 00:03:36.080 anointed ones or harm my prophets. Okay, so when 00:03:36.080 --> 00:03:38.939 God first began to establish his nation of Israel, 00:03:39.080 --> 00:03:42.400 it started with Abraham and it began to grow. 00:03:42.460 --> 00:03:44.659 And even though they were God's people in a foreign 00:03:44.659 --> 00:03:47.939 land, God continued to protect them. And ultimately 00:03:47.939 --> 00:03:50.219 they were going to grow into a big nation. But 00:03:50.219 --> 00:03:53.460 in the meantime, God was... faithful to Abraham, 00:03:53.580 --> 00:03:55.639 and he was faithful to Abraham's descendants, 00:03:55.819 --> 00:03:58.879 and God continued to watch out for them and to 00:03:58.879 --> 00:04:02.280 protect them and to take care of them. And then 00:04:02.280 --> 00:04:06.120 we move on to a beautiful example of what I think 00:04:06.120 --> 00:04:09.080 is one of the greatest stories in all of the 00:04:09.080 --> 00:04:12.099 Bible. If you've never read the story of Joseph 00:04:12.099 --> 00:04:15.300 before, you can find that in Genesis, starting 00:04:15.300 --> 00:04:19.100 in chapter 37, and pretty much from there to 00:04:19.100 --> 00:04:21.600 the end of the book of Genesis is the story. 00:04:22.280 --> 00:04:25.699 of Joseph, and it's a beautiful story. We spent 00:04:25.699 --> 00:04:27.920 several weeks on it a few years ago and went 00:04:27.920 --> 00:04:30.120 through that whole few chapters, kind of breaking 00:04:30.120 --> 00:04:32.060 it down. You can find that online if you want 00:04:32.060 --> 00:04:34.639 to go back and listen to that series on our church 00:04:34.639 --> 00:04:38.920 website. But I encourage you to read that story 00:04:38.920 --> 00:04:41.839 and read those chapters. It's a great story, 00:04:42.019 --> 00:04:43.860 and we're going to talk about it as we go through 00:04:43.860 --> 00:04:48.029 these scriptures here. In verse 16. He called 00:04:48.029 --> 00:04:51.129 down famine against the land and destroyed the 00:04:51.129 --> 00:04:54.910 entire food supply. He had sent a man ahead of 00:04:54.910 --> 00:04:59.689 them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave. They hurt 00:04:59.689 --> 00:05:02.250 his feet with shackles. His neck was put in an 00:05:02.250 --> 00:05:05.829 iron collar until the time his prediction came 00:05:05.829 --> 00:05:10.110 true. The word of the Lord tested him. The king 00:05:10.110 --> 00:05:14.149 sent for him and released him. The ruler of peoples 00:05:14.149 --> 00:05:19.139 set him free. He made him master of his household, 00:05:19.240 --> 00:05:23.339 ruler over all his possessions, binding his officials 00:05:23.339 --> 00:05:29.060 at will and instructing the elders. Now, one 00:05:29.060 --> 00:05:34.000 reason why I really like this story is I think 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:36.800 it's a good reminder to us that God works in 00:05:36.800 --> 00:05:42.180 ways that do not always make sense. In verse 00:05:42.180 --> 00:05:45.040 17, it says, he sent a man ahead of them. That 00:05:45.040 --> 00:05:46.959 is, there was going to be a famine in the land, 00:05:47.040 --> 00:05:50.180 and God sent a man ahead of them. Well, to really 00:05:50.180 --> 00:05:53.540 appreciate what exactly took place, what's being 00:05:53.540 --> 00:05:56.060 referenced here, we need to refresh ourself with 00:05:56.060 --> 00:05:59.620 this story of Joseph. Now, Joseph had some brothers, 00:05:59.800 --> 00:06:03.360 and they didn't really like Joseph. Joseph was 00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:05.819 the favorite, and Joseph had had some dreams. 00:06:06.639 --> 00:06:09.180 And he told his brothers those dreams. He said, 00:06:09.319 --> 00:06:12.959 I had a sheaf of wheat, or I think it was wheat, 00:06:13.040 --> 00:06:16.959 and your sheaves were all bound down to my sheaves. 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:18.620 And they said, you think one day we're going 00:06:18.620 --> 00:06:21.420 to bow down to you? And then he had another dream, 00:06:21.579 --> 00:06:25.000 similarly, about the moon and the stars. And 00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:29.779 again, a reference that one day everybody in 00:06:29.779 --> 00:06:33.019 Joseph's family would bow down to him. Well, 00:06:33.180 --> 00:06:36.199 his brothers didn't care for this dream at all, 00:06:36.279 --> 00:06:38.959 and they didn't like him at all. And so, long 00:06:38.959 --> 00:06:42.480 story short, they decided to sell him into slavery. 00:06:43.019 --> 00:06:45.439 And good riddance, they thought. They sold their 00:06:45.439 --> 00:06:48.959 brother Joseph into slavery. They killed an animal. 00:06:48.980 --> 00:06:51.339 They put the blood on his cloak, and they took 00:06:51.339 --> 00:06:52.939 it to their father. And they said, hey, look 00:06:52.939 --> 00:06:55.360 here. Guess something got Joseph. And, of course, 00:06:55.379 --> 00:06:58.819 his father was just really upset about what had 00:06:58.819 --> 00:07:02.579 taken place. But nevertheless... God was going 00:07:02.579 --> 00:07:06.439 to use this horrible situation for his good. 00:07:06.879 --> 00:07:09.500 Now, it doesn't seem very good when your own 00:07:09.500 --> 00:07:12.100 brothers capture you and set you as a slave off 00:07:12.100 --> 00:07:15.660 to a foreign land. But God knew what he was doing. 00:07:16.180 --> 00:07:19.680 God was, as the scripture says here, was sending 00:07:19.680 --> 00:07:24.139 a man ahead of them. Now, Joseph's story, it 00:07:24.139 --> 00:07:26.959 was kind of up and down, but it wasn't good times. 00:07:27.680 --> 00:07:32.639 It took years for his story to unfold. Ultimately, 00:07:32.639 --> 00:07:36.000 he was sold to somebody in Egypt. And throughout 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:40.040 Joseph's story, we see a theme. And that is that 00:07:40.040 --> 00:07:43.180 God was with Joseph. And God blessed everything 00:07:43.180 --> 00:07:46.339 Joseph did. God blessed. And so even when he 00:07:46.339 --> 00:07:49.079 was sold into slavery, he pretty soon worked 00:07:49.079 --> 00:07:51.639 his way up to second in command at Potiphar's 00:07:51.639 --> 00:07:54.939 house, the first person he was a slave for. Through 00:07:54.939 --> 00:07:57.620 a series of lies that were told on him, he was 00:07:57.620 --> 00:07:59.779 imprisoned again. I'm skipping over some of the 00:07:59.779 --> 00:08:01.480 best parts of the story. You have to read it 00:08:01.480 --> 00:08:05.180 yourself. But he was thrown into prison. And 00:08:05.180 --> 00:08:08.100 again, the Lord was with him and the Lord blessed 00:08:08.100 --> 00:08:11.560 him. And lo and behold, he became a high up in 00:08:11.560 --> 00:08:13.800 the prison under the warden. The warden entrusted 00:08:13.800 --> 00:08:16.680 him with certain things and privileges because 00:08:16.680 --> 00:08:21.319 he was a man that was blessed by God. But it 00:08:21.319 --> 00:08:24.259 just so happened. That the prison that he was 00:08:24.259 --> 00:08:28.379 thrown into was the same prison where the enemies 00:08:28.379 --> 00:08:30.699 of Pharaoh and the ones that Pharaoh didn't like 00:08:30.699 --> 00:08:33.399 were thrown. And it's there that he met a couple 00:08:33.399 --> 00:08:35.799 of Pharaoh's servants who Pharaoh had thrown 00:08:35.799 --> 00:08:39.279 into prison. And they had some dreams which Joseph 00:08:39.279 --> 00:08:42.820 was able to interpret for them. And one of them 00:08:42.820 --> 00:08:45.879 got to go back and serve the king, serve Pharaoh. 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:48.850 The other one Pharaoh had killed. But Joseph 00:08:48.850 --> 00:08:50.909 told the one that he interpreted the dream for, 00:08:50.970 --> 00:08:53.230 he said, hey, look, when you get back to Pharaoh, 00:08:53.450 --> 00:08:55.870 put in a good word for me because I ain't done 00:08:55.870 --> 00:08:59.490 anything to deserve being here. But a long time 00:08:59.490 --> 00:09:03.070 passed. And then eventually that guy remembered 00:09:03.070 --> 00:09:05.570 when Pharaoh had a dream, hey, wait a minute, 00:09:05.629 --> 00:09:09.049 there was this guy in prison. And again, Joseph's 00:09:09.049 --> 00:09:12.029 on the move. And guess what? Again, the Lord 00:09:12.029 --> 00:09:16.070 is with Joseph. And Joseph becomes second in 00:09:16.070 --> 00:09:21.590 command. and all of Egypt. Now, a lot of time 00:09:21.590 --> 00:09:26.309 had passed by. It's a lot that had taken place 00:09:26.309 --> 00:09:31.309 that God was going to use Joseph to provide for 00:09:31.309 --> 00:09:35.750 his people. About over 20 years had passed from 00:09:35.750 --> 00:09:37.629 the time that his brothers had sold him into 00:09:37.629 --> 00:09:40.769 slavery from the time that he was going to be 00:09:40.769 --> 00:09:44.610 reunited with them. But God sent a famine on 00:09:44.610 --> 00:09:47.230 the land. Of course, God had blessed Joseph, 00:09:47.289 --> 00:09:50.549 and Joseph knew how to prepare for the famine 00:09:50.549 --> 00:09:52.870 and advised Pharaoh how to prepare for the famine. 00:09:52.970 --> 00:09:55.750 And lo and behold, when the famine hit the land, 00:09:55.929 --> 00:10:01.529 Egypt had an abundance of food, and no one else 00:10:01.529 --> 00:10:05.190 did. No one else in the land had food, and times 00:10:05.190 --> 00:10:08.129 were getting hard. And guess who showed up in 00:10:08.129 --> 00:10:14.049 Egypt and needed food? It was Joseph's own brothers. 00:10:15.490 --> 00:10:20.049 Now, this is a good example of a bad situation 00:10:20.049 --> 00:10:24.970 that God uses for good. God knew what he needed 00:10:24.970 --> 00:10:28.049 to do. He knew that that famine was going to 00:10:28.049 --> 00:10:30.490 come. He knew that his people needed to be provided 00:10:30.490 --> 00:10:34.710 for. And so to provide for his people, God allowed 00:10:34.710 --> 00:10:38.129 Joseph to be sold into slavery, to be put into 00:10:38.129 --> 00:10:41.539 prison. To ultimately make his way to a foreign 00:10:41.539 --> 00:10:44.240 country and be second in command so that God 00:10:44.240 --> 00:10:49.360 could carry out his purpose. And maybe, maybe 00:10:49.360 --> 00:10:53.139 God does that in our life sometimes. There may 00:10:53.139 --> 00:10:56.019 be things that we go through that are really 00:10:56.019 --> 00:10:59.379 hard. I suspect that... what Joseph had to go 00:10:59.379 --> 00:11:02.059 through was really hard. It's not easy when your 00:11:02.059 --> 00:11:04.259 own family turns on you. It's not easy being 00:11:04.259 --> 00:11:07.139 a servant in a foreign land. It's not easy being 00:11:07.139 --> 00:11:09.700 in prison. None of those things are easy. Being 00:11:09.700 --> 00:11:14.539 separated from your family, but yet God knew 00:11:14.539 --> 00:11:18.379 what he was doing. And even there, he allowed 00:11:18.379 --> 00:11:21.299 some things that were not easy, that were tough, 00:11:21.539 --> 00:11:25.480 so that he could use Joseph for the good of his 00:11:25.480 --> 00:11:30.440 people, for the good of his... And maybe God 00:11:30.440 --> 00:11:33.379 is doing that in our life. And maybe it's good 00:11:33.379 --> 00:11:36.159 for us to look at stories like this and be reminded. 00:11:36.779 --> 00:11:40.940 What's the point of this psalm? It's to remember 00:11:40.940 --> 00:11:44.399 what God has done. To remember how gracious God 00:11:44.399 --> 00:11:49.460 was to Joseph and to his people. And this is 00:11:49.460 --> 00:11:51.600 a beautiful story. It's a beautiful reminder. 00:11:51.759 --> 00:11:54.360 And maybe we need to be reminded tonight that 00:11:54.360 --> 00:11:57.580 God is good. Because maybe tonight we're in a 00:11:57.580 --> 00:12:00.620 bad place, and we don't see how any good can 00:12:00.620 --> 00:12:02.759 come from this. Now, I don't know what Joseph 00:12:02.759 --> 00:12:05.960 felt. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what 00:12:05.960 --> 00:12:07.720 he felt. He probably felt like, well, I'm going 00:12:07.720 --> 00:12:11.000 to be in prison the rest of my life. I'm going 00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:13.700 to be a servant in Potiphar's house the rest 00:12:13.700 --> 00:12:17.620 of my life. His situation was not good, and it 00:12:17.620 --> 00:12:20.899 didn't seem good at the time, and he probably 00:12:20.899 --> 00:12:22.480 didn't know if he was going to have a future. 00:12:23.340 --> 00:12:26.529 But God knew what was taking place. And God had 00:12:26.529 --> 00:12:30.690 him just where he wanted him to be. But that 00:12:30.690 --> 00:12:33.710 probably is not where Joseph wanted to be. And 00:12:33.710 --> 00:12:36.529 I think God still works in our life in the same 00:12:36.529 --> 00:12:40.490 way. Sometimes God puts us in places where he 00:12:40.490 --> 00:12:43.710 wants us to be. And it's not where we want to 00:12:43.710 --> 00:12:46.590 be. And it's hard for us to see how any good 00:12:46.590 --> 00:12:50.950 can come from it. But it can. But here's what 00:12:50.950 --> 00:12:53.710 we have to remember. We can read this story of 00:12:53.710 --> 00:12:56.389 Joseph. You can go back and turn to Genesis 37. 00:12:56.450 --> 00:12:59.190 You can read through the whole story. And even 00:12:59.190 --> 00:13:00.929 if you're a slow reader, it won't take you an 00:13:00.929 --> 00:13:03.450 hour. And you see the beginning. Man, he was 00:13:03.450 --> 00:13:05.429 sold into slavery. Man, he's second in command, 00:13:05.429 --> 00:13:08.710 provides for his family a happy ending. But that 00:13:08.710 --> 00:13:12.929 happy ending took over 20 years. And that's the 00:13:12.929 --> 00:13:16.350 part we don't like. Because we'd like to be able... 00:13:16.570 --> 00:13:18.649 In some seasons of our life, it just turned the 00:13:18.649 --> 00:13:22.409 page real quick, right? But in the case of Joseph, 00:13:22.649 --> 00:13:25.549 man, that story had a happy ending, but it didn't 00:13:25.549 --> 00:13:30.549 have a quick ending. And so maybe there's a point 00:13:30.549 --> 00:13:33.509 in our life that some of us are at now where 00:13:33.509 --> 00:13:35.649 it's a really hard season and we don't see the 00:13:35.649 --> 00:13:38.509 happy ending, but we need to know that God is 00:13:38.509 --> 00:13:40.909 good. If we're trusting God, that God will be 00:13:40.909 --> 00:13:44.110 with us. He was with Joseph every step of the 00:13:44.110 --> 00:13:46.789 way. He took care of Joseph every step of the 00:13:46.789 --> 00:13:51.250 way, albeit not in great situations. He was a 00:13:51.250 --> 00:13:54.009 slave for Potiphar and in prison. Not the best 00:13:54.009 --> 00:13:56.669 situations in the world, but nevertheless, God 00:13:56.669 --> 00:14:00.169 was with him and ultimately God delivered him. 00:14:01.350 --> 00:14:03.750 And so maybe find some encouragement in that 00:14:03.750 --> 00:14:06.490 tonight. Maybe you're not in a bad place tonight. 00:14:06.590 --> 00:14:08.110 Maybe you're in a good place. I just don't know how God can 00:14:25.230 --> 00:14:28.769 use this for good. But God, He works in some 00:14:28.769 --> 00:14:32.370 ways that we don't understand. He sees the big 00:14:32.370 --> 00:14:35.610 picture. He puts all the pieces into place just 00:14:35.610 --> 00:14:39.370 where they need to be. He's put pieces into place 00:14:39.370 --> 00:14:42.779 probably in our life years ago. So that they 00:14:42.779 --> 00:14:46.000 would fall into place at just the right time. 00:14:46.379 --> 00:14:49.360 And that's what he had done in the story of Joseph. 00:14:49.879 --> 00:14:52.740 And I think God still does that in our story 00:14:52.740 --> 00:14:56.860 today. So let us be reminded and encouraged that 00:14:56.860 --> 00:14:59.899 God is good. That he's fulfilled every promise. 00:15:01.600 --> 00:15:04.080 He took care of his people. In your life, no matter how 00:15:30.120 --> 00:15:32.679 good or how bad it may be, God is trustworthy 00:15:32.679 --> 00:15:35.700 and he is good. And just as he was with his people 00:15:35.700 --> 00:15:39.340 and delivered them all those years ago, so he'll 00:15:39.340 --> 00:15:42.340 deliver us today. Let's pray.
