I'm going to sound a lot younger than I did 00:00:54.799 --> 00:00:59.140 when we get on Psalm 50. Years have passed. All 00:00:59.140 --> 00:01:02.920 right, Psalm 105. We'll pray, and then we'll 00:01:02.920 --> 00:01:07.159 get started. God, we come to you. We thank you 00:01:07.159 --> 00:01:09.819 for a good day. I pray that you would help us 00:01:09.819 --> 00:01:13.000 just to look at these words, that we would just 00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:16.120 recall the blessings that you have poured out 00:01:16.120 --> 00:01:18.359 in our life and the promises that you have kept 00:01:18.359 --> 00:01:21.219 and that we are reminded of how faithful you 00:01:21.219 --> 00:01:24.079 have been, not just to the people in Scripture, 00:01:24.299 --> 00:01:26.659 but to us, dear Lord, and to those we know. And 00:01:26.659 --> 00:01:29.760 I pray that we too would just praise you as well, 00:01:29.799 --> 00:01:32.819 just as we see in this psalm. Now, it is believed 00:01:38.750 --> 00:01:41.329 that David wrote this psalm, and for good reason. 00:01:41.530 --> 00:01:44.969 If you look in 1 Chronicles chapter 16, starting 00:01:44.969 --> 00:01:49.189 in verse 7, you'll see that from verse 7 to verse 00:01:49.189 --> 00:01:53.390 22, that those 15 verses are the same as the 00:01:53.390 --> 00:01:55.430 15 verses that we're going to look at tonight. 00:01:55.730 --> 00:01:59.829 And so we see that psalm of praise taking place 00:01:59.829 --> 00:02:02.769 when the Ark of the Covenant is being brought 00:02:02.769 --> 00:02:06.579 back to Jerusalem. And David leads that psalm, 00:02:06.579 --> 00:02:10.639 leads that praise in 1 Chronicles chapter 16. 00:02:10.759 --> 00:02:14.099 And so that gives us a little context of what 00:02:14.099 --> 00:02:16.240 was going on, at least when this first part of 00:02:16.240 --> 00:02:22.120 the psalm was written. Psalm 105 verse 1 says, 00:02:22.259 --> 00:02:26.080 Give thanks to Yahweh, call on His name, proclaim 00:02:26.080 --> 00:02:30.500 His deeds among the peoples. Sing to Him, sing 00:02:30.500 --> 00:02:35.280 praise to Him. Tell about all his wonderful works. 00:02:35.960 --> 00:02:41.300 Now, I just mentioned that what we see in 1 Chronicles 00:02:41.300 --> 00:02:44.659 16 is just a praise in the Lord, the Ark of the 00:02:44.659 --> 00:02:47.300 Covenant, just praise in the Lord for all he's 00:02:47.300 --> 00:02:49.819 done, that there was something that had taken 00:02:49.819 --> 00:02:54.780 place that was worthy of praising God. But what 00:02:54.780 --> 00:02:57.860 about in our life? Is there anything that takes 00:02:57.860 --> 00:03:01.180 place that's... worthy of praising God well I 00:03:01.180 --> 00:03:04.479 suspect that there is there's probably a lot 00:03:04.479 --> 00:03:06.500 more things in our life that we should praise 00:03:06.500 --> 00:03:11.340 God for than we do we ask God for a lot of things 00:03:11.340 --> 00:03:14.599 and we seek God for strength and help and that's 00:03:14.599 --> 00:03:16.919 great we should do that God is there for us to 00:03:16.919 --> 00:03:20.699 do that but but maybe we should we should pay 00:03:20.699 --> 00:03:23.229 attention to these psalms because we kind of 00:03:23.229 --> 00:03:25.289 see this same idea. A lot of the things that 00:03:25.289 --> 00:03:27.270 we see are just kind of repeats. A lot of the 00:03:27.270 --> 00:03:30.009 things that I say are repeats because we kind 00:03:30.009 --> 00:03:34.189 of see this theme bounces back up from time to 00:03:34.189 --> 00:03:37.050 time of praising the Lord. We see that a lot 00:03:37.050 --> 00:03:39.569 in the Psalms. Now, we see a lot of beautiful 00:03:39.569 --> 00:03:42.590 things in the Psalm. We see cries for help and 00:03:42.590 --> 00:03:46.469 pleas for God to hear us and not abandon us in 00:03:46.469 --> 00:03:49.150 our sinfulness. We see those kind of things, 00:03:49.349 --> 00:03:52.539 but we also see praise. And I think that... We 00:03:52.539 --> 00:03:54.800 see a good balance of that in the Psalms, and 00:03:54.800 --> 00:03:57.240 we should see a good balance of that in our lives 00:03:57.240 --> 00:04:02.240 too. And maybe that's good medicine for us. Maybe 00:04:02.240 --> 00:04:05.120 that is something that will kind of cheer us 00:04:05.120 --> 00:04:08.699 up. And maybe there are some things 00:04:56.399 --> 00:04:58.660 that I desire or some things that are harder 00:04:58.660 --> 00:05:01.699 than what I really want to go through. So even when 00:05:31.829 --> 00:05:34.009 we have to eat something we don't like or do 00:05:34.009 --> 00:05:36.829 something we don't enjoy, maybe even in those 00:05:36.829 --> 00:05:39.490 things we can see some blessing, and maybe that 00:05:39.490 --> 00:05:43.209 changes our mindset and our heart. And so we 00:05:43.209 --> 00:05:46.329 see in the psalm this idea of, Praising God because 00:05:46.329 --> 00:05:48.529 he's good, because of all he's done, because 00:05:48.529 --> 00:05:52.329 he's worthy of our praise. And maybe we need 00:05:52.329 --> 00:05:57.629 to do that in our lives as well. Verse 3. Honor 00:05:57.629 --> 00:06:01.069 his holy name. Let the hearts of those who seek 00:06:01.069 --> 00:06:05.410 Yahweh rejoice. Search for the Lord and his strength. 00:06:05.870 --> 00:06:11.579 Seek his face always. Boy, that's a good command 00:06:11.579 --> 00:06:14.439 for us there. Search for the Lord and for His 00:06:14.439 --> 00:06:17.819 strength. Seek His face always. We need to make sure that we are 00:06:39.399 --> 00:06:42.920 those who search for the Lord, that we're always 00:06:42.920 --> 00:06:44.939 looking for the Lord, that we're looking to grow 00:06:44.939 --> 00:06:47.379 in the Lord, and we're looking for the Lord to 00:06:47.379 --> 00:06:50.319 work in our heart. That's good instruction for 00:06:50.319 --> 00:06:55.220 us. Verse 5. Remember the wonderful works he 00:06:55.220 --> 00:06:58.759 has done, his wonders and the judgments he has 00:06:58.759 --> 00:07:02.040 promised. Again, I call to remembrance here, 00:07:02.100 --> 00:07:04.810 okay? Why is David... praising the Lord? Well, 00:07:04.870 --> 00:07:07.290 because he remembers the Lord. He knows that 00:07:07.290 --> 00:07:10.589 the Lord is good. Now, David's life wasn't always 00:07:10.589 --> 00:07:13.490 good, and a lot of that was his own fault, so 00:07:13.490 --> 00:07:16.589 we can kind of relate to that. Our life isn't 00:07:16.589 --> 00:07:19.089 always good, and it's not necessary that everything 00:07:19.089 --> 00:07:22.009 that happens is our fault, but sometimes we may 00:07:22.009 --> 00:07:24.910 be like David, get ourselves in some bad situations, 00:07:24.990 --> 00:07:28.560 but Even then, we see that David gets to experience 00:07:28.560 --> 00:07:32.540 the grace and the mercy of God, and David is 00:07:32.540 --> 00:07:35.319 delivered from situations that weren't any of 00:07:35.319 --> 00:07:38.100 his doing, but just enemies that were coming 00:07:38.100 --> 00:07:41.399 against him in hard times, and he saw God work. 00:07:41.540 --> 00:07:43.600 David had experienced the grace and the mercy 00:07:43.600 --> 00:07:47.300 of God. He had seen him work. been delivered 00:07:47.300 --> 00:07:50.199 by him. He had seen all the mighty things that 00:07:50.199 --> 00:07:53.120 God had done. He had seen enemies defeated, and 00:07:53.120 --> 00:07:57.000 David knew the stories of God of the Old Testament 00:07:57.000 --> 00:07:59.699 before David even came onto the scene. And so 00:07:59.699 --> 00:08:03.779 we see in this passage a call to remember what 00:08:03.779 --> 00:08:08.319 God has done. We need to do that. Sometimes we 00:08:08.319 --> 00:08:11.839 need to not just thank God for the blessings 00:08:11.839 --> 00:08:14.579 that we see now, but maybe we just need to take 00:08:14.579 --> 00:08:17.610 a moment and just... And just remember that God 00:08:17.610 --> 00:08:20.310 is good, that God cares. And think about the 00:08:20.310 --> 00:08:22.350 times in the past that God has been with us, 00:08:22.370 --> 00:08:24.829 the times in the past that we thought, man, this 00:08:24.829 --> 00:08:27.009 is too hard, this is too stressful, I don't know 00:08:27.009 --> 00:08:29.490 how I'm going to get through this. And somehow, 00:08:29.589 --> 00:08:32.350 God gets us through it. And looking back at it 00:08:32.350 --> 00:08:35.350 now, we say, man, that wasn't so bad. But in 00:08:35.350 --> 00:08:37.950 the moment, things do seem bad. And so if we're 00:08:37.950 --> 00:08:39.970 in the moment of something that seems bad today, 00:08:40.289 --> 00:08:43.389 then maybe we need to remember the things that 00:08:43.389 --> 00:08:46.370 God has done in the past. He's delivered us in 00:08:46.370 --> 00:08:49.110 the past and delivered many we know in the past 00:08:49.110 --> 00:08:51.769 and delivered countless people throughout the 00:08:51.769 --> 00:08:54.850 scripture so we can remember that we serve a 00:08:54.850 --> 00:08:58.549 good God who keeps his promises. Continuing on 00:08:58.549 --> 00:09:04.250 in verse 6. You offspring of Abraham, his servant, 00:09:04.350 --> 00:09:07.870 Jacob's descendants, his chosen ones, he is the 00:09:07.870 --> 00:09:11.590 Lord our God. His judgments govern the whole 00:09:11.590 --> 00:09:15.419 earth. He remembers his covenant forever. the 00:09:15.419 --> 00:09:18.320 promise he ordained for a thousand generations. 00:09:18.759 --> 00:09:22.779 The covenant he made with Abraham swore to Isaac 00:09:22.779 --> 00:09:27.200 and confirmed to Jacob as a decree and to Israel 00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:30.980 as an everlasting covenant. But he begins 00:09:44.720 --> 00:09:47.019 to not just say, remember the Lord, but he starts 00:09:47.019 --> 00:09:49.539 to give examples of how we can trust the Lord. 00:09:49.600 --> 00:09:52.700 And he starts with Abraham. And what did God 00:09:52.700 --> 00:09:55.179 say to Abraham? He said, I'm going to bless you, 00:09:55.200 --> 00:09:57.620 and all nations are going to be blessed through 00:09:57.620 --> 00:10:00.100 you. Now, that was the promise. And part of that 00:10:00.100 --> 00:10:02.700 promise was Israel was going to get the land, 00:10:02.740 --> 00:10:05.080 and they did. They certainly got the land, and 00:10:05.080 --> 00:10:08.519 God blessed them. But the bigger part of the 00:10:08.519 --> 00:10:14.720 promise was further looking than just the bloodline 00:10:14.720 --> 00:10:17.899 of Abraham. What God was really going to do was 00:10:17.899 --> 00:10:21.700 bless all nations through Abraham. And we see 00:10:21.700 --> 00:10:23.639 that clearly spelled out for us when we get to 00:10:23.639 --> 00:10:26.120 the New Testament, that it tells us who the sons 00:10:26.120 --> 00:10:29.779 of Abraham are. Now, God promises that the descendants 00:10:29.779 --> 00:10:32.740 of Abraham, the sons of Abraham, are going to 00:10:32.740 --> 00:10:35.120 be blessed. And by the time we get to the New 00:10:35.120 --> 00:10:37.460 Testament, when we get to Galatians, it tells 00:10:37.460 --> 00:10:41.240 us that the sons of Abraham are those who have 00:10:41.240 --> 00:10:43.620 faith in Jesus Christ, that those are the children 00:10:43.620 --> 00:10:47.019 of God, that those are the people of God. It's 00:10:47.019 --> 00:10:49.840 not a people with a certain bloodline. It's not 00:10:49.840 --> 00:10:53.649 just descendants of Abraham. But the New Testament 00:10:53.649 --> 00:10:57.309 explains for us that the promises of God are 00:10:57.309 --> 00:11:00.730 yes and amen in Jesus Christ. And everything 00:11:00.730 --> 00:11:03.929 was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. All that was talked 00:11:03.929 --> 00:11:06.490 about, that the nations were going to be blessed, 00:11:06.590 --> 00:11:08.309 that the descendants were going to be blessed, 00:11:08.350 --> 00:11:11.070 that all of this was going to happen, this promise 00:11:11.070 --> 00:11:14.769 to Abraham, all of this was fulfilled. All of 00:11:14.769 --> 00:11:18.429 this has already been accomplished through Jesus 00:11:18.429 --> 00:11:22.159 Christ. And so we know that God... is a God who 00:11:22.159 --> 00:11:25.159 keeps his promises. He had promised in the Old 00:11:25.159 --> 00:11:27.399 Testament to give his people the land, and he 00:11:27.399 --> 00:11:29.860 did. And when we get to the end of the book of 00:11:29.860 --> 00:11:33.220 Joshua, it says that every promise that God had 00:11:33.220 --> 00:11:35.659 made to the people, he had kept those promises. 00:11:36.399 --> 00:11:39.620 But there was a further reaching promise. It 00:11:39.620 --> 00:11:41.860 was not just for the people going to the land 00:11:41.860 --> 00:11:44.220 at that time. It was pointing us toward Jesus 00:11:44.220 --> 00:11:46.960 Christ, the Messiah who was going to come through 00:11:46.960 --> 00:11:50.320 the bloodline of Abraham. But the real sons of 00:11:50.320 --> 00:11:53.360 Abraham are those who trust in Jesus Christ. 00:11:53.559 --> 00:11:56.179 And we see that spelled out throughout the Old 00:11:56.179 --> 00:11:59.000 Testament because there were many of the Pharisees 00:11:59.000 --> 00:12:02.740 and those who were against Jesus, and they thought 00:12:02.740 --> 00:12:04.340 it was something special. Well, we're Jewish, 00:12:04.360 --> 00:12:05.879 and Jesus said, well, look, you're not really 00:12:05.879 --> 00:12:09.019 sons of Abraham because you're not following 00:12:09.019 --> 00:12:12.200 God like Abraham did. Abraham was a man of faith, 00:12:12.240 --> 00:12:15.899 and so the sons of Abraham are those who have 00:12:15.899 --> 00:12:20.440 faith in Jesus Christ. And Jesus Christ is the 00:12:20.440 --> 00:12:23.279 one who brings forth the promises of God. For 00:12:23.279 --> 00:12:26.779 the promises of God are yes and amen in him, 00:12:26.840 --> 00:12:30.639 Paul says in the New Testament. And so David 00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:33.360 says here, hey, we can start and we can go all 00:12:33.360 --> 00:12:35.419 the way back to the beginning at Abraham. Now 00:12:35.419 --> 00:12:38.159 in David's day, he hadn't seen the fulfillment 00:12:38.159 --> 00:12:41.299 of all those prophecies and the promises of Jesus 00:12:41.299 --> 00:12:44.100 Christ. He had seen the fulfillment to some extent. 00:12:44.730 --> 00:12:47.230 but he hadn't seen the ultimate fulfillment that 00:12:47.230 --> 00:12:50.429 came through Jesus Christ. But even still, David 00:12:50.429 --> 00:12:53.830 is rejoicing. If David is rejoicing over the 00:12:53.830 --> 00:12:56.710 things that he saw in his life, and he only got 00:12:56.710 --> 00:13:00.110 to see a few things, how much more so should 00:13:00.110 --> 00:13:03.830 we rejoice now that we have got to see all of 00:13:03.830 --> 00:13:07.210 God's promises fulfilled in Jesus Christ? That 00:13:07.210 --> 00:13:09.250 we have got to see all these things in the Old 00:13:09.250 --> 00:13:11.470 Testament, they're accomplished, they're done, 00:13:11.570 --> 00:13:14.330 even in things in David's life. Even the things 00:13:14.330 --> 00:13:16.710 that were prophesied about him, we see fulfilled 00:13:16.710 --> 00:13:19.889 in Jesus Christ. That Jesus, the son of David, 00:13:20.049 --> 00:13:24.070 was going to be the Messiah. And so we see that 00:13:24.070 --> 00:13:28.429 God is faithful and true to his promises. And 00:13:28.429 --> 00:13:31.570 for that, David says, we need to be those who 00:13:31.570 --> 00:13:35.129 rejoice. We need to remember what God has done 00:13:35.129 --> 00:13:39.730 so that we can know what God will do. He will 00:13:39.730 --> 00:13:43.620 be with us. He will strengthen us. And David 00:13:43.620 --> 00:13:47.259 says he's worthy of being praised. And we need 00:13:47.259 --> 00:13:53.059 to do that. Maybe that's a good homework for 00:13:53.059 --> 00:13:56.000 us this week. Is to say, you know what, if I 00:13:56.000 --> 00:13:58.279 don't already, and maybe you do, but if you don't 00:13:58.279 --> 00:14:01.639 already, just set aside some prayers this week 00:14:01.639 --> 00:14:05.919 to say, I'm just going to praise the Lord.
