So today's message is going 00:02:06.739 --> 00:02:14.000 to be about restoration. Restoration is a pretty 00:02:14.000 --> 00:02:16.120 cool process, and there's all kinds of stuff 00:02:16.120 --> 00:02:20.280 you can restore. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, furniture, 00:02:20.620 --> 00:02:24.080 artwork. You can restore lost files on a computer. 00:02:25.580 --> 00:02:29.069 Has anybody here restored anything before? He's been 00:03:58.819 --> 00:04:04.379 arrested. He was crucified, resurrected, and 00:04:04.379 --> 00:04:08.199 he has met the disciples twice at this point. 00:04:08.879 --> 00:04:12.099 We'll start with verses 1 through 14. After these 00:04:12.099 --> 00:04:14.460 things, Jesus showed himself again to the disciples 00:04:14.460 --> 00:04:17.680 at the Sea of Tiberias. And in this way, he showed 00:04:17.680 --> 00:04:20.959 himself. Simon Peter, Thomas called the twin, 00:04:21.199 --> 00:04:25.089 Nathaniel of Cana of Galilee. The sons of Zebedee 00:04:25.089 --> 00:04:27.730 and two others of his disciples were together. 00:04:28.410 --> 00:04:31.129 Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing. 00:04:31.389 --> 00:04:35.209 And they said, we're going with you. They went 00:04:35.209 --> 00:04:37.649 out and immediately got into the boat. And that 00:04:37.649 --> 00:04:41.189 night they caught nothing. But when the morning 00:04:41.189 --> 00:04:44.189 had now come, Jesus stood on the shore. Yet the 00:04:44.189 --> 00:04:47.769 disciples did not know it was Jesus. Then Jesus 00:04:47.769 --> 00:04:51.490 said to him, children, have you any food? They 00:04:51.490 --> 00:04:54.459 answered no. He said to them, cast the net on 00:04:54.459 --> 00:04:56.339 the right side of the boat and you will find 00:04:56.339 --> 00:05:00.060 some. Now, when Simon 00:05:10.279 --> 00:05:12.480 Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his 00:05:12.480 --> 00:05:15.600 outer garment and plunged into the sea. But the 00:05:15.600 --> 00:05:17.519 other disciples came in the little boat for they 00:05:17.519 --> 00:05:19.819 were not far from the land, dragging the net 00:05:19.819 --> 00:05:23.040 of fish. Then as soon as they had come to land, 00:05:23.100 --> 00:05:26.019 he saw a fire of coals there and fish laid on 00:05:26.019 --> 00:05:28.959 it and bread. Jesus said to them, bring some 00:05:28.959 --> 00:05:31.779 of the fish which you have just caught. Simon 00:05:31.779 --> 00:05:34.199 Peter went up and dragged the net to land full 00:05:34.199 --> 00:05:39.500 of large fish, 153. And although there were so 00:05:39.500 --> 00:05:42.300 many, the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, 00:05:42.339 --> 00:05:45.860 come and eat breakfast. Yet none of the disciples 00:05:45.860 --> 00:05:50.019 dared ask him, who are you? knowing that it was 00:05:50.019 --> 00:05:53.079 the Lord. Then Jesus came and took the bread 00:05:53.079 --> 00:05:56.100 and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. This 00:05:56.100 --> 00:05:59.480 is now the third time Jesus showed himself to 00:05:59.480 --> 00:06:01.860 his disciples after he was raised from the dead. 00:06:02.860 --> 00:06:05.519 Now the actual restoration of Simon Peter starts 00:06:05.519 --> 00:06:07.899 in the next verse, and we're going to get to 00:06:07.899 --> 00:06:10.939 that. So remember, for restoration to take place, 00:06:10.939 --> 00:06:13.220 the first principle we need is something that 00:06:13.220 --> 00:06:15.860 is broken. So say that with me. Something that 00:06:15.860 --> 00:06:19.980 is broken. Broken in terms of restoration means 00:06:19.980 --> 00:06:24.339 busted, rusted, damaged, worn out. If you're 00:06:24.339 --> 00:06:26.899 broken, busted, rusted, worn out, you might need 00:06:26.899 --> 00:06:31.360 some restoration too. And as for that 1967 Camaro 00:06:31.360 --> 00:06:36.279 I talked about, it was all those. Chris and Brandy 00:06:36.279 --> 00:06:39.420 Whitson owned a 1967 Camaro. It wasn't involved 00:06:39.420 --> 00:06:42.319 in a big crash. It was just worn out. Basically 00:06:42.319 --> 00:06:45.379 no paint left. Rust and corrosion had started 00:06:45.379 --> 00:06:49.540 to take over. It was wearing out tires. No headliner. 00:06:49.759 --> 00:06:53.079 The Camaro was broken. And was it Chris's fault? 00:06:53.759 --> 00:06:58.500 Yes. Yes, it was. Because Chris drives that car 00:06:58.500 --> 00:07:02.160 just like his dad drove cars, just like his mom 00:07:02.160 --> 00:07:04.939 drove cars, just like his brother drives cars. 00:07:06.680 --> 00:07:09.899 With the gas pedal smashed to the firewall, using 00:07:09.899 --> 00:07:14.100 all of those 496 big block cubic inches, Yeah, 00:07:14.160 --> 00:07:17.100 a lot of big blocks were 396. But outside, it was broken and in need 00:07:23.740 --> 00:07:26.060 of restoration. That's principle number one, 00:07:26.100 --> 00:07:29.500 something is broken. So what about Simon Peter? 00:07:30.639 --> 00:07:33.579 What's his story and was he broken? That's a 00:07:33.579 --> 00:07:35.620 little bit more of a complicated story than the 00:07:35.620 --> 00:07:37.000 Camaro, and we're going to take a little bit 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:39.360 more time explaining that one. I'm going to highlight 00:07:39.360 --> 00:07:42.300 several interactions between Simon Peter and 00:07:42.300 --> 00:07:45.720 Jesus. So that you can see who Simon Peter was 00:07:45.720 --> 00:07:49.740 and understand his brokenness. Simon Peter first 00:07:49.740 --> 00:07:53.079 met Jesus on the same sea where we see them in 00:07:53.079 --> 00:07:56.300 John chapter 21. Simon Peter was a fisherman. 00:07:57.000 --> 00:08:00.500 His dad was a fisherman. His brother, you guessed 00:08:00.500 --> 00:08:06.379 it, fisherman. He was in his mid -20s to early 00:08:06.379 --> 00:08:09.620 30s, making him the oldest of the disciples. 00:08:10.480 --> 00:08:13.959 So if you remember when in... the beginning of 00:08:13.959 --> 00:08:17.779 John chapter 21, Jesus says, children, do you 00:08:17.779 --> 00:08:20.259 have any fish? These were like late teenagers, 00:08:20.459 --> 00:08:25.639 early 20s. Some of his disciples were just not 00:08:25.639 --> 00:08:28.060 much older than that. And Jesus says, he says 00:08:28.060 --> 00:08:30.939 in Matthew 4, verses 18 to 20, here's where we 00:08:30.939 --> 00:08:34.240 find where Simon, Peter, and Jesus meet. And 00:08:34.240 --> 00:08:37.539 Jesus walking by the Sea of Galilee saw two brothers, 00:08:37.779 --> 00:08:42.440 Simon called Peter and Andrew. casting a net 00:08:42.440 --> 00:08:45.200 into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus 00:08:45.200 --> 00:08:49.740 said to them, follow me, and I will make you 00:08:49.740 --> 00:08:53.320 fishers of men. And they immediately left their 00:08:53.320 --> 00:08:56.899 nets and followed him. That's a great start for 00:08:56.899 --> 00:09:01.179 Simon Peter. In the Bible, you'll hear him referred 00:09:01.179 --> 00:09:03.820 to as Simon, Simon, Peter, and Peter, and it's 00:09:03.820 --> 00:09:06.899 all the same person. Jesus gave him the name 00:09:06.899 --> 00:09:10.600 Peter, which means rock. He was a fisherman by 00:09:10.600 --> 00:09:13.399 trade, and now he put down his net for good to 00:09:13.399 --> 00:09:17.379 be a fisher of men. Ten chapters later in Matthew, 00:09:17.539 --> 00:09:20.279 we have the account of Jesus walking on the water 00:09:20.279 --> 00:09:24.159 in the Sea of Galilee. This is a pretty popular 00:09:24.159 --> 00:09:27.120 spot for Simon Peter and Jesus. They end up there 00:09:27.120 --> 00:09:30.779 a lot. After feeding the 5 ,000, Jesus had his 00:09:30.779 --> 00:09:33.059 disciples get in a boat and go out before him. 00:09:33.960 --> 00:09:37.059 As the waters became rough and the wind picked 00:09:37.059 --> 00:09:40.820 up, the disciples, including Simon Peter, They 00:09:40.820 --> 00:09:45.639 were scared. Jesus walks on the water to meet 00:09:45.639 --> 00:09:48.860 them. In Matthew chapter 14, we see this account. 00:09:48.980 --> 00:09:51.240 Jesus says to his disciples as he meets them 00:09:51.240 --> 00:09:56.740 on the water, it is I. Do not be afraid. And 00:09:56.740 --> 00:10:00.019 Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it is you, 00:10:00.200 --> 00:10:04.299 command me to come to you on the water. So Jesus 00:10:04.299 --> 00:10:07.690 says, come. And when Peter had come down out 00:10:07.690 --> 00:10:10.350 of the boat, he walked on the water to go to 00:10:10.350 --> 00:10:14.970 Jesus. But when he saw the wind was boisterous 00:10:14.970 --> 00:10:18.429 and he was afraid, he began to sink and cried 00:10:18.429 --> 00:10:24.450 out, Lord, save me. And Jesus immediately, he 00:10:24.450 --> 00:10:27.230 immediately stretched out his hand and caught 00:10:27.230 --> 00:10:31.990 him and said, oh, you have little faith. Why 00:10:31.990 --> 00:10:36.340 do you doubt? You'll see this is vintage Simon 00:10:36.340 --> 00:10:39.740 Peter. He's the first one to speak up. He's the 00:10:39.740 --> 00:10:42.440 first one to get out of the boat. And he immediately 00:10:42.440 --> 00:10:48.360 focuses on Jesus, but not for long. He soon takes 00:10:48.360 --> 00:10:51.620 his eyes off Jesus. He focuses on the wind, starts 00:10:51.620 --> 00:10:55.840 to sink. And without hesitation, Jesus saves 00:10:55.840 --> 00:10:59.720 him. Jesus tells Simon Peter he has little faith 00:10:59.720 --> 00:11:02.000 and he has doubt. But does that make him broken? 00:11:03.210 --> 00:11:06.590 Not yet. But this is what we see in Simon Peter's 00:11:06.590 --> 00:11:09.110 life and his walk with Jesus. Moments of absolute 00:11:09.110 --> 00:11:13.649 blind faith. Excitement, exuberance, then failing 00:11:13.649 --> 00:11:17.889 and brokenness. Sometimes it happens in the same 00:11:17.889 --> 00:11:21.129 conversation. Another example of Peter's highs 00:11:21.129 --> 00:11:25.110 and lows takes place in Matthew 16, verses 13 00:11:25.110 --> 00:11:28.909 and 23. In these verses, Jesus is with the disciples 00:11:28.909 --> 00:11:32.509 and he asked them, who do men say that I am? 00:11:33.840 --> 00:11:37.179 Some of his disciples, they say you're John the 00:11:37.179 --> 00:11:42.220 Baptist, you're Elijah, Jeremiah, some of the 00:11:42.220 --> 00:11:44.899 other prophets. But then he asks a much more 00:11:44.899 --> 00:11:49.360 pointed question, and he says, who do you say 00:11:49.360 --> 00:11:52.419 that I am? The disciples know Jesus at this point. 00:11:53.039 --> 00:11:57.240 Who do you say that I am? And as usual, it's 00:11:57.240 --> 00:12:01.080 Simon Peter. Simon Peter jumps right in, and 00:12:01.080 --> 00:12:05.259 he says, You are the Christ, the Son of the living 00:12:05.259 --> 00:12:09.500 God. What a great answer from Simon Peter. And 00:12:09.500 --> 00:12:11.899 an even better response from Jesus in verse 17. 00:12:12.179 --> 00:12:14.679 Jesus answered and said to Simon Peter, Blessed 00:12:14.679 --> 00:12:18.419 are you, Simon Barjona, for flesh and blood has 00:12:18.419 --> 00:12:22.679 not revealed this to you, but my Father who is 00:12:22.679 --> 00:12:26.879 in heaven. And I say to you that you are Peter 00:12:26.879 --> 00:12:29.970 on this rock. I will build my church. and the 00:12:29.970 --> 00:12:32.769 gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 00:12:33.129 --> 00:12:36.190 And I will give you the keys to the kingdom of 00:12:36.190 --> 00:12:40.649 heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound 00:12:40.649 --> 00:12:44.289 in heaven. Whatever you loose on earth will be 00:12:44.289 --> 00:12:47.610 loosed in heaven. The answer from Peter was an 00:12:47.610 --> 00:12:50.929 A -plus answer. Jesus says, I will build my church 00:12:50.929 --> 00:12:55.409 on you. I will give you the keys to the kingdom 00:12:55.409 --> 00:12:58.879 of heaven. Who's broken now? Not Simon Peter. 00:12:59.740 --> 00:13:03.500 But in this same conversation, just moments later, 00:13:03.559 --> 00:13:07.559 Jesus explains that some really bad things are 00:13:07.559 --> 00:13:09.899 going to happen. They're going to happen to Jesus. 00:13:10.980 --> 00:13:15.340 He tells him in verse 21 that he must go to Jerusalem 00:13:15.340 --> 00:13:22.059 and suffer many things and be killed and be raised 00:13:22.059 --> 00:13:25.500 on the third day. This is not Jesus saying, hey, 00:13:25.539 --> 00:13:29.659 I'm thinking about this. This might happen. Let's 00:13:29.659 --> 00:13:32.259 go to Jerusalem, just see what goes down. No, 00:13:32.399 --> 00:13:35.740 Jesus is saying this must happen. He knows his 00:13:35.740 --> 00:13:39.799 father's plans. And Peter, the rock on which 00:13:39.799 --> 00:13:41.799 we're going to build the church, the guy getting 00:13:41.799 --> 00:13:45.100 the keys to the kingdom of heaven, he pulls Jesus 00:13:45.100 --> 00:13:51.860 aside and he rebukes him. To rebuke is to sharply 00:13:51.860 --> 00:13:55.440 criticize or reprimand someone because you strongly 00:13:55.440 --> 00:14:00.929 disapprove. of their behavior or actions. So 00:14:00.929 --> 00:14:04.509 we think Jesus thinks of that. Jesus turns to 00:14:04.509 --> 00:14:09.129 Peter and exclaims. He doesn't whisper. He doesn't 00:14:09.129 --> 00:14:12.529 mention it. He explains, get behind me, Satan. 00:14:12.830 --> 00:14:17.309 You are not mindful of the things of God, but 00:14:17.309 --> 00:14:21.149 the things of men. What a whirlwind for Simon 00:14:21.149 --> 00:14:25.120 Peter. What a whiplash. To go from, I'm going 00:14:25.120 --> 00:14:28.600 to build my church on you to get behind me, Satan. 00:14:29.399 --> 00:14:31.840 But that's Simon Peter wrapped up in one conversation. 00:14:32.740 --> 00:14:35.360 So at this point, Simon Peter, he's pretty broken. 00:14:36.399 --> 00:14:41.799 But don't worry, it gets worse. Soon after Jesus 00:14:41.799 --> 00:14:45.460 calls Simon Peter Satan, Jesus tells his disciples 00:14:45.460 --> 00:14:50.059 that they will all stumble. Not just one, not 00:14:50.059 --> 00:14:53.990 some. Jesus tells them, you're all going to stumble 00:14:53.990 --> 00:14:57.909 during my arrest and my crucifixion. This is 00:14:57.909 --> 00:15:03.269 detailed in Mark 14, verses 27 to 31. But you 00:15:03.269 --> 00:15:05.629 know, Simon Peter, in his confidence and his 00:15:05.629 --> 00:15:09.309 exuberance, he tells Jesus in verse 29, even 00:15:09.309 --> 00:15:15.529 if all are made to stumble, not me. I'm not going 00:15:15.529 --> 00:15:19.269 to stumble. But Jesus answers him, assuredly, 00:15:19.269 --> 00:15:24.370 I say to you today, Even this night, before the 00:15:24.370 --> 00:15:27.870 rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times. 00:15:31.769 --> 00:15:36.370 So Jesus is arrested. Peter follows to where 00:15:36.370 --> 00:15:39.090 they're taking Jesus. And you know what comes 00:15:39.090 --> 00:15:42.789 next. While sitting around a fire of coals, Peter 00:15:42.789 --> 00:15:49.059 denies Jesus not once, not twice. And the third 00:15:49.059 --> 00:15:53.200 time is detailed in Luke 22, verse 59, when Simon 00:15:53.200 --> 00:15:56.759 Peter asks a third time, surely you know Jesus? 00:15:57.639 --> 00:16:00.840 And Peter replies, man, I don't know what you 00:16:00.840 --> 00:16:04.580 are saying. And immediately, while he was still 00:16:04.580 --> 00:16:08.679 speaking, the rooster crowed, and the Lord turned 00:16:08.679 --> 00:16:12.899 and looked at Peter. And then Peter remembered 00:16:12.899 --> 00:16:16.139 the words of the Lord. Can you imagine that feeling? 00:16:16.919 --> 00:16:20.159 the feeling of failure, the feeling of shame, 00:16:20.340 --> 00:16:24.000 looking Jesus right in the eye after you just 00:16:24.000 --> 00:16:28.299 denied him three times. This hits Peter hard. 00:16:28.379 --> 00:16:32.379 Luke says he went out and wept bitterly. Peter 00:16:32.379 --> 00:16:35.460 is broken. He is crushed. He's failed again. 00:16:36.620 --> 00:16:39.039 Jesus told Simon Peter, I'll build my church 00:16:39.039 --> 00:16:43.559 on you. I'll give you the keys to heaven. And 00:16:43.559 --> 00:16:48.009 he threw it all away. Peter is broken. The Camaro 00:16:48.009 --> 00:16:53.690 is broken. So what happens next? We need to look 00:16:53.690 --> 00:16:55.909 at principle number two. Something is worth restoring. 00:16:56.330 --> 00:16:58.870 So say it with me. What is a 1967 00:17:17.549 --> 00:17:21.970 Camaro? Is it a one -of -a -kind car? Did they 00:17:21.970 --> 00:17:27.809 only make one? Nope. When 00:24:14.009 --> 00:24:16.009 we turn the pages to the book of Acts, we see 00:24:16.009 --> 00:24:18.029 the arrival of the Holy Spirit to Simon Peter 00:24:18.029 --> 00:24:22.099 in the 120. Simon Peter then preaches the very 00:24:22.099 --> 00:24:25.140 first message to the Christian church, and 3 00:24:25.140 --> 00:24:31.319 ,000 are saved.
