And our prayer has been this, as you've 00:00:49.179 --> 00:00:51.320 gone through this time of fasting. Our prayer 00:00:51.320 --> 00:00:53.869 has been that you hear from the Lord. sometime 00:00:53.869 --> 00:00:56.689 during this fast. And I found out sometimes that's 00:00:56.689 --> 00:00:58.770 a small way that you hear from God. Sometimes 00:00:58.770 --> 00:01:01.909 it's a large way. For me personally, it seems 00:01:01.909 --> 00:01:04.209 like God does this small adjustment. Anytime 00:01:04.209 --> 00:01:07.930 I get into a fast in some way, God does this 00:01:07.930 --> 00:01:10.670 small adjustment inside of me that translates 00:01:10.670 --> 00:01:12.790 to something much bigger on the outside of me 00:01:12.790 --> 00:01:16.069 later on. There have been times in my life that 00:01:58.629 --> 00:02:02.109 I have completely underestimated the person that 00:02:02.109 --> 00:02:04.049 was standing in front of me. Maybe I underestimated their 00:02:08.150 --> 00:02:10.650 ability. Maybe I underestimated their talent, 00:02:10.830 --> 00:02:13.729 their gift, right, their wisdom. Maybe their 00:02:13.729 --> 00:02:16.990 savvy, even their intellect. Anybody ever question 00:02:16.990 --> 00:02:18.969 somebody's intellect? And we tell this story often in our 00:02:54.680 --> 00:02:58.060 family because it is a cautionary tale to never, 00:02:58.139 --> 00:03:01.430 ever. ever underestimate a person that's standing 00:03:01.430 --> 00:03:03.550 in front of you, even if they're under three 00:03:03.550 --> 00:03:06.860 feet tall. Amen? It's true. And this is how it 00:03:06.860 --> 00:03:09.639 went down for me. At that time, Dixie and I had 00:03:09.639 --> 00:03:12.500 bought our first home, and it was in the metropolis 00:03:12.500 --> 00:03:14.460 of Windburn, PA, which is a very small town where 00:03:14.460 --> 00:03:17.639 we grew up. And we bought this little split -entry 00:03:17.639 --> 00:03:20.340 house. And it had a very small yard. It was a 00:03:20.340 --> 00:03:22.659 small house. And you came in the door. And if 00:03:22.659 --> 00:03:24.180 you came in the door of that house, you would 00:03:24.180 --> 00:03:26.319 go up a set of steps, right? But one of the greatest mistakes 00:06:34.769 --> 00:06:37.389 you can ever make is underestimating somebody 00:06:37.389 --> 00:06:39.889 that's standing in front of you. And even the 00:06:39.889 --> 00:06:43.449 bigger mistake is if you underestimate Jesus. 00:06:44.250 --> 00:06:47.329 If you underestimate the Son of God, and I'm 00:06:47.329 --> 00:06:50.430 not sure how we do it, why we do it, and sometimes 00:06:50.430 --> 00:06:53.689 I do it. It's the most bizarre thing in my mind 00:06:53.689 --> 00:06:57.069 that I underestimate the Son of God. I underestimate 00:06:57.069 --> 00:06:59.850 the one who has all power, who has all knowledge, 00:06:59.930 --> 00:07:03.170 who can be in all places at one time. Somehow, 00:07:03.430 --> 00:07:06.379 I underestimate Him. Somehow I put him in this 00:07:06.379 --> 00:07:10.000 strange human box, right? And pull him out and 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:12.279 think he has human characteristics and he's going 00:07:12.279 --> 00:07:14.279 to do things like I'm going to do it, right? 00:07:14.360 --> 00:07:17.180 And I place him in this unholy expectation of 00:07:17.180 --> 00:07:21.060 God, the all -powerful creator of all things. 00:07:21.199 --> 00:07:23.519 And it's the most ridiculous thing in the world. 00:07:23.860 --> 00:07:27.579 And I have become painfully aware over the years 00:07:27.579 --> 00:07:32.319 that it is a big, big mistake to underestimate 00:07:32.319 --> 00:07:37.019 Jesus. And unfortunately, So many who surrounded 00:07:37.019 --> 00:07:40.560 Jesus when he walked on the earth made this same 00:07:40.560 --> 00:07:44.420 mistake. Even those who flooded into the streets 00:07:44.420 --> 00:07:47.899 of Jerusalem and pulled out palm branches and 00:07:47.899 --> 00:07:50.860 laid them down and weighed them and said, Hosanna, 00:07:50.959 --> 00:07:53.560 Hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name 00:07:53.560 --> 00:07:56.620 of the Lord, the King of Israel. If you got your 00:07:56.620 --> 00:07:58.379 Bibles, I want you to turn to John chapter 11 00:07:58.379 --> 00:08:01.199 this morning. We're going to verse 55. We're 00:08:01.199 --> 00:08:05.639 going to start there. John 11, 55. And as you 00:08:05.639 --> 00:08:07.259 go, I'm going to pray. I'm going to pray over 00:08:07.259 --> 00:08:09.779 our ears and our heart to receive the word. Father, 00:08:09.819 --> 00:08:12.540 God, as we turn in your word, God, I pray for 00:08:12.540 --> 00:08:14.920 each person in the house. God, move upon us right 00:08:14.920 --> 00:08:17.399 now. Move upon our ears. Move upon our hearts. 00:08:17.519 --> 00:08:20.019 Move upon our heads. Lord, that we might receive 00:08:20.019 --> 00:08:22.560 the amazing word of God. All right, John chapter 11, verse 55, 00:08:33.649 --> 00:08:35.889 and it says this, and the Passover of the Jews 00:08:35.889 --> 00:08:38.570 was near, and many went from the country up to 00:08:38.570 --> 00:08:41.929 Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. 00:08:42.409 --> 00:08:44.669 Now, let me explain this just a little bit, because 00:08:44.669 --> 00:08:46.129 you need to know what's taking place here and 00:08:46.129 --> 00:08:49.789 what's happening. What's taking place is that 00:08:49.789 --> 00:08:52.269 people are flooding into the city of Jerusalem. 00:08:53.580 --> 00:08:57.519 And for Passover, they're there. The Jewish people 00:08:57.519 --> 00:09:00.220 are coming in to celebrate Passover. So this 00:09:00.220 --> 00:09:02.940 is an ancient biblical practice, and it actually 00:09:02.940 --> 00:09:06.120 still takes place today. Passover was and still 00:09:06.120 --> 00:09:09.320 is a major Jewish holiday, right, of the Israelites. 00:09:09.419 --> 00:09:12.799 And it's the Jewish people celebrating God pulling 00:09:12.799 --> 00:09:15.429 the Israelites or the Jews. out of Egyptian slavery 00:09:15.429 --> 00:09:18.990 centuries before. And the festival and the celebration 00:09:18.990 --> 00:09:21.809 lasts for about seven to eight days in length, 00:09:21.850 --> 00:09:23.690 and it is in the spring of the year. And it is 00:09:23.690 --> 00:09:26.830 characterized by a retelling of the story of 00:09:26.830 --> 00:09:29.830 Exodus, and it's done over a meal called the 00:09:29.830 --> 00:09:33.269 Seder. And the Seder meal or the festival takes 00:09:33.269 --> 00:09:36.629 place, and they tell this story of God's deliverance. 00:09:36.769 --> 00:09:39.970 And where we're at in Scripture today, they're 00:09:39.970 --> 00:09:42.629 coming into the city of Jerusalem once again 00:09:42.629 --> 00:09:46.210 to... celebrate Passover, and they're preparing 00:09:46.210 --> 00:09:49.590 for Passover. And how they did it is they came 00:09:49.590 --> 00:09:52.509 into the city, and there was a ritual cleansing 00:09:52.509 --> 00:09:54.950 that would take place, a ritual immersion. It 00:09:54.950 --> 00:09:58.950 was called mikvah. And it was a ceremonial cleansing 00:09:58.950 --> 00:10:02.990 that would take place before Passover. So they 00:10:02.990 --> 00:10:05.450 would get there a week early. And if somebody 00:10:05.450 --> 00:10:07.730 had touched something that was dead previously 00:10:07.730 --> 00:10:11.559 to Passover, They would come in. They would be 00:10:11.559 --> 00:10:13.519 sprinkled with water that was mixed with ashes 00:10:13.519 --> 00:10:16.259 from a red heifer. And that would happen on the 00:10:16.259 --> 00:10:19.899 third and seventh day before Passover. And everybody 00:10:19.899 --> 00:10:23.240 would come in for this cleansing that would take 00:10:23.240 --> 00:10:27.720 place to get ready to celebrate Passover. And 00:10:27.720 --> 00:10:30.980 so hundreds, maybe thousands and thousands of 00:10:30.980 --> 00:10:33.899 people poured into Jerusalem in this period of 00:10:33.899 --> 00:10:36.960 time. And it was a festival, right? There was 00:10:36.960 --> 00:10:40.039 a buzz in the air. But this year was a little 00:10:40.039 --> 00:10:44.179 different because not only was it Passover, but 00:10:44.179 --> 00:10:47.620 there was a stir because news about Jesus had 00:10:47.620 --> 00:10:51.759 circulated in Jerusalem. News about the man who 00:10:51.759 --> 00:10:55.940 raised Lazarus, a town two miles away from the 00:10:55.940 --> 00:11:00.860 dead. The prophet, the teacher, the healer, those 00:11:00.860 --> 00:11:04.139 who believe that this possibly could be the prophesied 00:11:04.139 --> 00:11:08.279 Messiah. And this particular Jewish crowd with 00:11:08.279 --> 00:11:11.960 great expectation that Jesus could possibly be 00:11:11.960 --> 00:11:16.080 the next Jewish king in line to lead them over 00:11:16.080 --> 00:11:20.620 Rome in victory. Rome was ruling the area, and 00:11:20.620 --> 00:11:23.620 they started to believe that Jesus, this guy 00:11:23.620 --> 00:11:25.879 who could heal and call people back from the 00:11:25.879 --> 00:11:28.830 dead. could be the one who leads him out from 00:11:28.830 --> 00:11:31.350 underneath Rome. And these people weren't just 00:11:31.350 --> 00:11:33.850 a bunch of starstruck individuals, Jewish people, 00:11:34.009 --> 00:11:35.830 who were waiting for Jesus to come in, right, 00:11:35.970 --> 00:11:38.169 and looking for to get a selfie with him. That's 00:11:38.169 --> 00:11:40.870 not what they were after. They started really 00:11:40.870 --> 00:11:43.629 believing that there was freedom on the horizon, 00:11:43.789 --> 00:11:47.149 and Jesus could make the difference as he comes 00:11:47.149 --> 00:11:49.909 into the city, and they would hail him as king. 00:11:50.590 --> 00:11:54.090 And all this is taking place in the city where 00:11:54.090 --> 00:11:58.399 Jesus is about to come. There's Pharisees. Now, 00:11:58.460 --> 00:12:00.460 not everyone was looking for Jesus, and not everybody 00:12:00.460 --> 00:12:02.799 was looking for him to be king. There were Pharisees 00:12:02.799 --> 00:12:04.879 who were corrupt Jewish leaders, and they were 00:12:04.879 --> 00:12:06.820 interested in taking Jesus down. As a matter 00:12:06.820 --> 00:12:08.720 of fact, they had already been hatching plans 00:12:08.720 --> 00:12:12.259 to take him out. And the first opportunity they 00:12:12.259 --> 00:12:14.279 could, they wanted people, they were already 00:12:14.279 --> 00:12:16.440 putting the word out for people to report back 00:12:16.440 --> 00:12:19.620 so they could come and see Jesus. Rome is on 00:12:19.620 --> 00:12:22.220 high alert because of the festival that's taking 00:12:22.220 --> 00:12:24.679 place. They don't want any sudden uprisings. 00:12:24.799 --> 00:12:28.139 They certainly don't want, you know, this news 00:12:28.139 --> 00:12:31.159 of a king, a would -be Jewish king coming in. 00:12:31.220 --> 00:12:33.220 First of all, that was illegal in Rome because 00:12:33.220 --> 00:12:36.059 the only king they recognized was Caesar. Anybody 00:12:36.059 --> 00:12:38.519 else who was recognized as king was considered 00:12:38.519 --> 00:12:41.909 a criminal. and they would take him out. And 00:12:41.909 --> 00:12:45.009 Jesus' disciples are among those who are around 00:12:45.009 --> 00:12:48.409 Jesus getting ready to come in, and they don't 00:12:48.409 --> 00:12:51.509 even know that there's a traitor among them at 00:12:51.509 --> 00:12:55.389 this point yet. Here's the thing. While all this 00:12:55.389 --> 00:12:58.629 is taking place, as Jesus is getting ready to 00:12:58.629 --> 00:13:02.409 come in to the city of Jerusalem, everybody surrounding 00:13:02.409 --> 00:13:07.009 Jesus, even his disciples, underestimate who 00:13:07.009 --> 00:13:11.809 he is. Most are completely clueless of the enormity 00:13:11.809 --> 00:13:15.769 of what he is about to accomplish. Their personal 00:13:15.769 --> 00:13:18.970 observations are based on their personal preferences 00:13:18.970 --> 00:13:21.190 or their personal experience at that moment. 00:13:21.309 --> 00:13:24.009 They underestimate his power, his eternal impact, 00:13:24.309 --> 00:13:27.029 God's eternal plan in all of this. And they're 00:13:27.029 --> 00:13:30.450 so caught up in the moment of what's taking place 00:13:30.450 --> 00:13:33.889 and their personal tensions that they completely 00:13:33.889 --> 00:13:37.360 underestimate. A man who's actually standing 00:13:37.360 --> 00:13:42.360 in front of him who is the son of God. That was 00:13:42.360 --> 00:13:45.840 a long intro to get to the reading. All right. 00:13:46.039 --> 00:13:48.139 John chapter 11, 55. I'm going to reread the 00:13:48.139 --> 00:13:50.580 first verse. And the Passover of the Jews was 00:13:50.580 --> 00:13:53.240 near. And many went from that country up to Jerusalem 00:13:53.240 --> 00:13:56.379 before the Passover to purify themselves. And 00:13:56.379 --> 00:13:58.240 they sought Jesus and spoke among themselves 00:13:58.240 --> 00:14:01.200 as they stood in the temple. What do you think? 00:14:01.320 --> 00:14:04.429 Will he not come to the feast? Now both the chief 00:14:04.429 --> 00:14:06.590 priests and the Pharisees had given a command 00:14:06.590 --> 00:14:09.190 that if anyone knew where he was, he should report 00:14:09.190 --> 00:14:12.330 it that they might seize him. Others of them, some of this group may 00:17:35.880 --> 00:17:38.400 have known the ancient prophecies. They may have 00:17:38.400 --> 00:17:40.960 known the prophecies from Daniel that actually 00:17:40.960 --> 00:17:43.519 spoke about the number of days when the Messiah 00:17:43.519 --> 00:17:46.920 would ride into Jerusalem. Actually, 383 years 00:17:46.920 --> 00:17:49.920 to the day when Jesus would ride in. Whatever 00:17:49.920 --> 00:17:52.980 convinced them, they believed that this was a 00:17:52.980 --> 00:17:57.160 conquering king. But they deeply underestimated. 00:17:57.559 --> 00:18:01.440 what Jesus was really up to. They thought that 00:18:01.440 --> 00:18:05.920 Jesus was their king to take down Rome, but Jesus 00:18:05.920 --> 00:18:10.680 was not just their king. He was the king. He 00:18:10.680 --> 00:18:14.680 was riding in to take all of evil down for all 00:18:14.680 --> 00:18:18.569 of time. And the people around him were clueless. 00:18:18.569 --> 00:18:21.950 They underestimated. They understood this. Who does not need daily as those high 00:23:06.640 --> 00:23:09.440 priests to offer up sacrifices, first for their 00:23:09.440 --> 00:23:11.799 own sins and then for the people's?
