Hearing, our sense of hearing 00:01:19.560 --> 00:01:23.120 and how vastly underrated our sense of hearing 00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:26.319 really is. If you'd ask most people, if you gave 00:01:26.319 --> 00:01:29.079 them a choice, would you rather lose your vision 00:01:29.079 --> 00:01:31.480 or your hearing? You'd probably say neither, 00:01:31.620 --> 00:01:33.879 right? But if you had to pick between the two, 00:01:34.060 --> 00:01:36.439 most people would say, I'd rather lose my hearing. 00:01:36.989 --> 00:01:40.280 than losing my vision. And when that happens, it is 00:02:34.280 --> 00:02:37.159 almost instantaneous that takes place. And there's 00:02:37.159 --> 00:02:39.819 a chain of neurons that begin to go from your 00:02:39.819 --> 00:02:42.419 ears and actually to the nerves in your spine. 00:02:42.620 --> 00:02:45.400 And it converts into this defensive mode that 00:02:45.400 --> 00:02:48.509 you go into. How do I know when he's speaking to me individually? 00:04:18.589 --> 00:04:21.329 How am I sure that the Holy Spirit is communicating 00:04:21.329 --> 00:04:24.430 into my spirit? What does that sound like? I 00:04:24.430 --> 00:04:27.170 want to hear God, but I'm not sure what he sounds 00:04:27.170 --> 00:04:30.069 like, right? I don't know if it's him sometimes. 00:04:30.329 --> 00:04:33.470 I feel like it might be him. We're not standing face to face 00:05:07.670 --> 00:05:10.509 with God. You're not hearing, probably not hearing 00:05:10.509 --> 00:05:14.129 an audible sound coming from God himself. We're 00:05:14.129 --> 00:05:17.250 not seeing his body language. We're not reading 00:05:17.250 --> 00:05:19.910 his lips in any kind of way. And it can cause 00:05:19.910 --> 00:05:22.810 us to begin to doubt that there's even a God 00:05:22.810 --> 00:05:25.610 out there. We begin to doubt in our spirit that 00:05:25.610 --> 00:05:28.490 we can hear God and sometimes even discount that 00:05:28.490 --> 00:05:33.089 he's even there. But God is there. He wants to 00:05:33.089 --> 00:05:36.850 speak to you. He wants to engage in conversation 00:05:36.850 --> 00:05:39.750 with him. You just gotta learn to listen his 00:05:39.750 --> 00:05:41.430 way. God, as we turn to your word, God, make 00:05:50.449 --> 00:05:52.029 it quick and powerful in our life. And Lord, 00:05:52.069 --> 00:05:54.949 I pray right on the recesses of our heart, God, 00:05:55.050 --> 00:05:57.329 that we might know you and know you well. In 00:05:57.329 --> 00:06:00.199 Jesus' name, and amen. Now, let me give you a 00:06:00.199 --> 00:06:01.860 little context while you're getting to John chapter 00:06:01.860 --> 00:06:05.259 10. In John chapter 9, Jesus heals a man who 00:06:05.259 --> 00:06:08.139 was blind from birth. And as a result of that, 00:06:08.180 --> 00:06:10.600 there are several conversations that begin to 00:06:10.600 --> 00:06:13.339 take place with Pharisees and Jews who did not 00:06:13.339 --> 00:06:17.319 believe. And it's heated. And there's this stirring 00:06:17.319 --> 00:06:20.560 takes place. And they just don't believe that 00:06:20.560 --> 00:06:23.259 Jesus did this particular healing. Even though 00:06:23.259 --> 00:06:25.720 Jesus has explained from the beginning that he's 00:06:25.720 --> 00:06:27.899 the son of God, even though he's proven time 00:06:27.899 --> 00:06:31.279 and time again that the father's power rests 00:06:31.279 --> 00:06:34.019 with him, even though he can heal with a word 00:06:34.019 --> 00:06:36.519 or with a touch and that had never been seen 00:06:36.519 --> 00:06:38.959 before, even though he has power over the demonic, 00:06:39.240 --> 00:06:41.740 even though he had power right over the winds 00:06:41.740 --> 00:06:44.399 and the waves and power over nature itself, Jesus 00:06:44.399 --> 00:06:47.120 walked on the water. He commanded fish to jump 00:06:47.120 --> 00:06:50.160 into a net, right? The disciples' net commanded 00:06:50.160 --> 00:06:52.790 him. He opened blinded eyes. healed lame legs. 00:06:52.949 --> 00:06:55.730 He speaks the word and stuns those who are listening. 00:06:55.870 --> 00:06:58.449 And even when the crowd gets violent and does 00:06:58.449 --> 00:07:01.129 not believe him, Jesus has the ability to slip 00:07:01.129 --> 00:07:03.629 away in the middle of a crowd and nobody knows 00:07:03.629 --> 00:07:06.509 where he went. And they still don't believe. 00:07:06.970 --> 00:07:09.170 These Pharisees, these Jews don't believe that 00:07:09.170 --> 00:07:12.649 he's son of God. And this same discussion continues 00:07:12.649 --> 00:07:15.209 with this group of people in the chapter 10, 00:07:15.350 --> 00:07:19.069 but Jesus ceases to spoon feed them spiritual 00:07:19.069 --> 00:07:22.329 truth. to convince them that he is the son of 00:07:22.329 --> 00:07:25.610 God. And he begins to speak in a parable. He 00:07:25.610 --> 00:07:28.970 begins to speak in something that would cause 00:07:28.970 --> 00:07:31.730 them to begin to think in his frustration with 00:07:31.730 --> 00:07:33.470 this crowd of people who simply wouldn't believe. 00:07:33.930 --> 00:07:36.930 And in John chapter 10 verse one says this, Moses, 00:07:36.949 --> 00:07:39.670 surely I say to you, he who does not enter by 00:07:39.670 --> 00:07:43.490 the sheepfold, the sheepfold by the door, but 00:07:43.490 --> 00:07:45.449 climbs up some other way, the same as a thief 00:07:45.449 --> 00:07:48.779 and a robber. But he who enters by the door is 00:07:48.779 --> 00:07:51.120 the shepherd of the sheep. To him, the doorkeeper 00:07:51.120 --> 00:07:53.800 opens and the sheep hear his voice and he calls 00:07:53.800 --> 00:07:56.319 his own sheep by name and leads them out. And 00:07:56.319 --> 00:07:58.500 when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before 00:07:58.500 --> 00:08:00.939 them and the sheep follow him for they know his 00:08:00.939 --> 00:08:03.839 voice. Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, 00:08:03.920 --> 00:08:06.899 but will flee from him for they do not know the 00:08:06.899 --> 00:08:10.079 stranger's voice. Jesus shifts the conversation. 00:08:10.379 --> 00:08:13.560 He shifts the debate. He shifts everything. And 00:08:13.560 --> 00:08:16.639 he starts to talk about shepherds. and sheep, 00:08:16.819 --> 00:08:20.360 right? He starts to tell this little story about 00:08:20.360 --> 00:08:23.100 shepherds and sheep and how they communicate 00:08:23.100 --> 00:08:26.100 with one another. Because how many know there's 00:08:26.100 --> 00:08:28.500 definitely a language barrier or communication 00:08:28.500 --> 00:08:31.800 barrier when it comes to sheep and humans? Anybody 00:08:31.800 --> 00:08:33.960 agree with me on that? How many of you have talked 00:08:33.960 --> 00:08:36.559 to sheep lately and got a good, meaningful conversation 00:08:36.559 --> 00:08:39.500 out of it, right? Does anybody in the house speak 00:08:39.500 --> 00:08:41.019 sheep? Go ahead and raise your hand if you speak 00:08:41.019 --> 00:08:43.950 sheep. We got one in the back, all right? It's 00:08:43.950 --> 00:08:46.110 a bah language. That's my joke for the day, right? 00:08:46.250 --> 00:08:50.750 Bah, right? But Jesus begins to talk about a 00:08:50.750 --> 00:08:53.950 shepherd and the sheep. He starts to talk about 00:08:53.950 --> 00:08:55.850 how they hear and they listen and they communicate, 00:08:56.070 --> 00:08:59.049 how they would understand one another, how there's 00:08:59.049 --> 00:09:02.429 familiarity between the shepherd and the sheep. 00:09:02.529 --> 00:09:05.309 And it might be hard for us to relate to this 00:09:05.309 --> 00:09:08.029 because a lot of us don't know too much about 00:09:08.029 --> 00:09:10.750 sheep. We don't know much about shepherds. Anybody 00:09:10.750 --> 00:09:13.440 in the house know professional shepherd? Raise 00:09:13.440 --> 00:09:16.879 your hand. All right, nobody this time. Most 00:09:26.860 --> 00:09:29.080 surely I say to you, he who does not enter the 00:09:29.080 --> 00:09:31.590 sheepfold. by the door but climbs up some other 00:09:31.590 --> 00:09:34.450 way, is a thief and a robber. But he who enters 00:09:34.450 --> 00:09:36.490 the door is the shepherd of the sheep. And this 00:09:36.490 --> 00:09:38.350 statement would make complete sense to the group 00:09:38.350 --> 00:09:41.789 he was talking to, but not so much to us. And 00:09:41.789 --> 00:09:43.450 you got to understand something. In ancient Israel, 00:09:43.649 --> 00:09:46.690 shepherds would be out in the fields with the 00:09:46.690 --> 00:09:49.870 sheep. And at night, there was this fenced -in 00:09:49.870 --> 00:09:51.789 area. I want you to picture this in your mind. 00:09:52.070 --> 00:09:54.570 There was this fenced -in area, and sometimes 00:09:54.570 --> 00:09:57.809 they would corral the sheep. into a fenced -in 00:09:57.809 --> 00:10:00.629 area. And I want you to picture in your mind 00:10:00.629 --> 00:10:02.470 this fenced -in area. It could be round. It could 00:10:02.470 --> 00:10:06.330 be square. It's your sheepfold fence. You can 00:10:06.330 --> 00:10:07.990 make it anything you want. It could be white 00:10:07.990 --> 00:10:09.950 picket. You can make it bar -bar, whatever you 00:10:09.950 --> 00:10:12.809 want to. But there's this sheep that are inside 00:10:12.809 --> 00:10:15.690 this area, and there was only one entrance into 00:10:15.690 --> 00:10:19.450 that fenced -in area. And it was open. And the 00:10:19.450 --> 00:10:21.210 shepherd would take his sheep. He would take 00:10:21.210 --> 00:10:23.610 them in there for protection. because there were 00:10:23.610 --> 00:10:26.210 wolves and there were thieves. And he would virtually 00:10:26.210 --> 00:10:28.830 get them all inside of there and he would lay 00:10:28.830 --> 00:10:32.529 in the gate and sleep. He was virtually the door 00:10:32.529 --> 00:10:35.509 to the sheep gate. Now that was in the country. 00:10:35.730 --> 00:10:38.370 If you went into the city and you brought a flock 00:10:38.370 --> 00:10:41.090 of sheep in as a shepherd, you came in, there 00:10:41.090 --> 00:10:44.049 was a common area that was similar. It was a 00:10:44.049 --> 00:10:46.820 large common area that was fenced in. one gate 00:10:46.820 --> 00:10:48.519 opening, and there was actually a doorkeeper. 00:10:48.720 --> 00:10:51.440 The shepherd would take the sheep to the doorkeeper. 00:10:51.580 --> 00:10:53.679 They would corral them in there. And then the 00:10:53.679 --> 00:10:55.879 sheep would intermingle with other shepherds 00:10:55.879 --> 00:10:58.120 who came into the city. And this would be full 00:10:58.120 --> 00:11:01.419 of sheep that were intermixed together with this 00:11:01.419 --> 00:11:04.000 one entrance. And it was the doorkeeper's responsibility 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:07.379 to keep those sheep safe until the shepherd would 00:11:07.379 --> 00:11:09.980 come back to retrieve them. And when the shepherd 00:11:09.980 --> 00:11:12.399 would come back, all these sheep were in there 00:11:12.399 --> 00:11:15.100 just milling around together. They're just inside 00:11:15.100 --> 00:11:19.360 of this area. And what would take place is they 00:11:19.360 --> 00:11:22.620 had to figure out whose sheep was who. And how 00:11:22.620 --> 00:11:25.460 they did that is the doorkeeper would allow the 00:11:25.460 --> 00:11:28.480 shepherd to walk up to the sheep and call them 00:11:28.480 --> 00:11:32.500 by name. See, shepherds had such a close relationship 00:11:32.500 --> 00:11:36.000 that a shepherd could come and call the sheep. 00:11:36.490 --> 00:11:38.690 and the sheep would come out from among the other 00:11:38.690 --> 00:11:43.350 sheep and follow the shepherd. Most of the time, 00:11:43.370 --> 00:11:46.029 these shepherds had all of their sheep named. 00:11:46.169 --> 00:11:48.529 They knew them personally. The sheep knew the 00:11:48.529 --> 00:11:50.409 voice of the shepherd. The shepherd knew the 00:11:50.409 --> 00:11:52.990 voice of the sheep. The bobs of the sheep, they 00:11:52.990 --> 00:11:54.889 knew what they looked like, and they would literally 00:11:54.889 --> 00:11:57.210 come out. I heard a story about this in World 00:11:57.210 --> 00:12:01.289 War I. There was a shepherd who was out on the 00:12:01.289 --> 00:12:04.710 hillsides near Jerusalem, and soldiers came by, 00:12:04.769 --> 00:12:05.909 and they were actually going to steal the sheep. 00:12:06.330 --> 00:12:08.970 from the shepherd. And this took place in the 00:12:08.970 --> 00:12:11.289 evening. The shepherd woke up to these soldiers 00:12:11.289 --> 00:12:13.950 stealing a whole flock of sheep. And of course, 00:12:13.970 --> 00:12:15.950 he's just one shepherd. They're armed. They're 00:12:15.950 --> 00:12:17.350 soldiers. He couldn't really do anything about 00:12:17.350 --> 00:12:18.990 it. But he waited until they got a little bit 00:12:18.990 --> 00:12:20.950 away, and he began to call out to the sheep. 00:12:21.470 --> 00:12:23.970 And the sheep turned around and came back. And 00:12:23.970 --> 00:12:27.049 they kept trying to take him. He just kept calling 00:12:27.049 --> 00:12:28.669 to them. He didn't have to do a thing. He just 00:12:28.669 --> 00:12:30.590 kept calling. The sheep kept returning. They 00:12:30.590 --> 00:12:32.309 kept coming back, and the soldiers finally gave 00:12:32.309 --> 00:12:35.240 up and just went on their way. So with that knowledge, 00:12:35.340 --> 00:12:37.200 let's read this verse again, and then I'm going 00:12:37.200 --> 00:12:39.500 to unfold four things that you need to know about 00:12:39.500 --> 00:12:42.899 hearing God. John 10, 1 says, Moses, surely I 00:12:42.899 --> 00:12:45.679 say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold 00:12:45.679 --> 00:12:47.980 by the door, but climbs up some other way, right, 00:12:48.100 --> 00:12:51.120 over the fence, the same is a thief and a robber. 00:12:51.379 --> 00:12:53.340 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd 00:12:53.340 --> 00:12:55.990 of the sheep. To him, the doorkeeper opens and 00:12:55.990 --> 00:12:58.190 the sheep hear his voice and he calls his own 00:12:58.190 --> 00:13:00.590 sheep by name and leads them out. All whoever came in before me are 00:13:25.149 --> 00:13:27.809 thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear 00:13:27.809 --> 00:13:30.929 them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, 00:13:31.009 --> 00:13:33.669 he will be saved and he will go in and out and 00:13:33.669 --> 00:13:36.879 find pasture. The thief does not come except 00:13:36.879 --> 00:13:40.039 to steal, to kill and destroy. But I have come 00:13:40.039 --> 00:13:41.299 that they might have life and they might have 00:13:41.299 --> 00:13:44.320 it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The 00:13:44.320 --> 00:13:46.600 good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. But 00:13:46.600 --> 00:13:49.399 a hireling who is not the shepherd, one who does 00:13:49.399 --> 00:13:52.059 not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves 00:13:52.059 --> 00:13:54.120 the sheep and flees.
